From my experience with a certain kind of white bigot, Trump fits the pattern perfectly. Lash out whenever someone from another ‘tribe’ does not show requisite deference, assume the worst without the slightest concern for reality, start smearing.
Looks like the true blue Trumpers allied with his campaign are going to ‘help out’ by saying the guy is a Muslim Brotherhood secret agent.
Fine, if they want to help him dig a deeper hole, let them.
Sickening, but if this crap helps blow his campaign out of the water quick fast, might be a good thing.

Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri offered this scathing condemnation of Trump’s attacks on the parents of a man killed in action, when he was in a place of danger because of his duty to us, killed as he was protecting the men in his unit:
My advice to Donald Trump has been and will continue to be to focus on jobs and national security and stop responding to every criticism whether it’s from a grieving family or Hillary Clinton.
In other words, “I’m not saying that Trump said anything wrong, but he might be better advised to talk about other things. You think?”
A real profile in courage.

I am trying to picture the Trump meltdown…and his ‘orders’ to his supporters…once a GOP official higher than dogcatcher finally pulls his/her endorsement. Where are the reporters on this? There were tens of thousands of them in Cleveland and Philadelphia – surely some of them can stake out Cruz, Rubio, Christie, McCain, McConnell, Ryan, Ernst, Sasse, Haley? Trump’s very bad, no good, awful day just keeps getting worse. Here’s his campaign co-chair attempting to explain Trump’s face-plant on the Ukraine question during the Stephanopoulis interview this weekend [Guardian]:
Campaign co-chair: Trump was ‘thinking about something else’ during answer on Crimea
Donald Trump’s campaign co-chair has offered up a novel excuse for the candidate’s comments during an interview that Vladimir Putin’s Russia would not invade Ukraine: He was thinking about something else at the time.
“I think, you know, I’ve run for office and I would – the phenomena I thought of when I was listening to the interview, Mr. Trump was thinking about something else and he answered the question when he was thinking about something else,” Sam Clovis told MSNBC.
“I’m not trying to offer an excuse,” Clovis continued. “But I will say, this is the, this is – the circumstance sometimes that, that, that happens. I think what was really at the heart of this.”

But just to give a splash of reality here. Roy Blunt–without criticizing Donald in any way–offered the mildest of suggestions that maybe Trump might possibly be better off talking about something else . . . and this is the way the Chicago Tribune reported it:
GOP senators joining criticism of Trump over disparagement of Muslim soldier’s parents
They never quote Blunt’s milquetoast statement. Instead they credit him as follows: “Fellow Republicans are joining the rising chorus of criticism of Donald Trump.”
Or, as the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported it:
Sen. Blunt sides with soldier’s parents in tiff with Trump, but doesn’t withdraw endorsement.
This is better–they do note that the endorsement which he doesn’t withdraw was a “tepid endorsement”–but they don’t call out the tepid criticism for what it is. Never count on even the “responsible” media to call it as we see it.

My guesses:
“I’ve heard, people have said, that Khan was paid to be at the DNC. People say it!”
“All soldiers are heroes. Some aren’t more heroic just because of their religion.”
“Hillary is telling the Khans what to say, they’re part of her campaign.”
“Don’t tell me I haven’t sacrificed. I stayed married to woman who is over 35 years old.”
@Betty Cracker: “I’m not trying to offer an excuse,” official excuse. “Oh, sorry about that missile strike on ND: the President thought he was ordering room service. We all get the munchies. Sometimes, that, that happens.”
That ad is in rotation here in the NH/MA evening news market – probably because of Ayotte’s vulnerable seat. I think it’s devastating. I really do. I think it pushes some visceral buttons in a way that’s hard to do, and that words can’t adequately convey. Jeb Bush’s spokeswoman from FL who said she couldn’t in good conscience look her children in the eye and say she voted for Trump may have actually seen this and been influenced by it, but if not, that’s what it’s aimed to do.

Ron Fournier has a long history with the Clintons going all the way back to their Arkansas days, and it has not been a positive one. She makes a ‘thruthi’ statement about the e-mails and suddenly we’re back to why can’t she stop lying? I would ask why Ron can’t stop lying about how much she lies all the time.

Trump also defended Putin’s criticism of the term “American exceptionalism” on Fox News.
“When he criticizes the president for using the term ‘American exceptionalism,’ if you’re in Russia, you don’t want to hear that America is exceptional,” Trump said on On the Record. “And if you’re in many other countries, whether it’s Germany or other places, you don’t want to hear about American exceptionalism because you think you’re exceptional. He seems incapable of apologizing or simply shutting his big fat mouth on the issue, so the only course is doubling down.
@gogol’s wife: Important thing for most voters is that he managed to say stuff that is just flat out obviously false..Meets the media’s ‘gotcha’ standard, so they have an excuse not to bend over backward to ignore it or try to explain it away, or declare it impolite to notice that Trump is full of shit.
The majority-white Hancock County Board of Elections and Registration was systematically questioning the registrations of more than 180 black Sparta citizens — a fifth of the city’s registered voters — by dispatching deputies with summonses commanding them to appear in person to prove their residence or lose their voting rights. “When I read that letter, I was kind of nervous,” Mr. Flournoy said in an interview. “I didn’t know what to do.”
But the purge of Sparta voters is precisely the sort of electoral maneuver that once would have needed Justice Department approval before it could be put in effect. In Georgia and all or part of 14 other states, the 1965 Voting Rights Act required jurisdictions with histories of voter discrimination to receive so-called preclearance before changing the way voter registration and elections were conducted.
Three years ago, the Supreme Court declared the preclearance mandate unconstitutional, saying the blatant discrimination it was meant to prevent was largely a thing of the past.

@Sloane Ranger: There is definitely a too-slow, too-long-in-coming movement to genuinely push back against this. I think part of the problem is that he’s lying so baldly against the work reporters are doing. Typically politicians look for an escape hatch where no factual reporting has taken place, but Trump is just running over that. So he’s telling reporters that he never said something which that person reported on. He’s basically calling *them* professional liars. That can’t imagine that will stand.
@Ernest Pikeman: I’m actually worried that Trump won’t make it much farther (stroke, heart attack, dead hooker, the GOP somehow removes him, he resigns on his own) and the GOP comes up with some way to field a more-viable candidate that could make the race more interesting than I like. Volunteering to serve in the military any time in the past 13 years of continuous war, is in itself an act of sacrifice and bravery.
Within that realm, there are lesser and greater (and non) degrees of bravery, such as the distinction you make between stepping on a landmine and taking out a machine gun to save your platoon. Or, say, running at suicide bomber’s vehicle to save hundreds of lives, as Captain Khan did.

The trick in PA is to get everyone in Allegheny and Philadelphia counties to get to the polls. Beaver County, formerly a diehard blue collar Dem stronghold, is never going to go for Hilz. Too many old people, not enough minorities or single educated women. But the reason PA almost always goes blue in presidential years is that Allegheny and Philadelphia counties always come through. This is also why the GOP and the media fantasize that the state is purple. It’s not but that’s because of Pittsburgh and Philly. There’s not enough population in the rest of the state, which is quite rural outside the two big cities, to make up for the huge numbers out of them.

*I think Jill Stein is a Useful Idiot, but there’s no reason to pass on unverified reports about her, and passing on false stories about Trump only weakens the impact of the true ones.

It really doesn’t help that the most rabid Berniacs have been wallowing in, and spreading, bullshit about rigging and suppression and Hillary and the Democrats’ vile, remorseless machinations for months on end. Thanks a bunch, douchebags.
Yep, I was pretty sure that the threats were coming next. They were implicit in 2000 and now they’re explicit.
The genie is not going back into the bottle, unfortunately. I hope our current president is mobilizing law enforcement and the FBI to monitor for increased white supremacist activity.

@Jeffro: And in the mind of Roger Stone, who projects like the multiplex down at the mall, a Democratic victory of any margin at all is “theft”. The idiotic stories of thousands of “illegals” being bused to polling places to tilt the vote Dem have been circulating for years, always of course never covered by the MSM. Well, this time, there will be plenty of phones with video capabilities out there to finally record these dastardly events, and we’ll see exactly zero of them, but that will not stop the scum of “True The Vote” or the Drumpfenproles from circulating the stories on Infowars or via shortwave.

CONGRATULATIONS!
And his supporters – speaking of unstable – holy cow. They just had a piece up on NBC news, live interviews of folks attending a Trump rally in Ohio: not only do they believe NOTHING except that which their god-king tells them, they radiate hate & potential violence.
@Jeffro: You know how those people are. They riot at the merest hint of what they perceive to be disrespect, shoot each other, kill cops, steal anything that’s not bolted to the floor, do drugs, have kids, never mind getting married…most of them, they don’t even know who the dad is, did you know that?
Maybe I’m just getting immune to the Trump bully boys big talk, but I’m not afraid of these people. 99.9% are the biggest cowards alive. Anecdotally and based only on those of my acquaintance, 100% of them are. They’re getting a big thrill right now about yelling at people and saying bad words and insulting minorities, women, etc. But I would guess they’ll skulk away and put all their nastiness away in the dark closet where it has always resided. Or on reddit. Kinda the same thing, though.

Trump Shuttle, Inc., doing business as Trump Airlines, was an airline owned by Donald Trump from 1989 to 1992….Trump Shuttle never turned a profit. The high debt load incurred in the company’s formation unnerved Trump’s creditors as his other high profile, highly leveraged interests failed. In September 1990 the loans were defaulted and ownership of the airline passed to its creditor banks, led by Citicorp. With airline share prices depressed by the recession and anticipation of the Gulf War, they were unable to sell the operation at a desired price despite lengthy negotiations first with Northwest Airlines, then American Airlines and US Air Group.

But it’s still going to be a problem for the US as a whole –
With all due respect, I disagree, sure there will be the loud mouths out there just as there were after ’08 and ’12.
He, and his supporters, are turning into dead-enders and acting like they have nothing to lose by burning the whole country down.
There are always dead enders and they always threaten to burn the country down. At the end of this there will probably be enough of them to burn a cross down, but we’ve been there before, haven’t we?
I don’t mean to lecture and I know it’s obvious, but this. is. dangerous.
So is driving a car. Again, with all due respect, they did everything they could to delegitimize a sitting President. How’d that work out for them?
Once again, we are blowing past all historical norms here thanks to this clown, simply because of his GOP enablers.
History is a pretty big nut to crack. Donald isn’t the first clown to come along and they all had enablers. Remember George ‘segregation now, segregation forever’ Wallace? And he was not the least of these.
That is who must be ‘pushed’ to do the right thing here.
I am not going to play Sisyphus and try to push that boulder up the mountain. What I will do is contribute, and volunteer, and drive people to the polls etc etc. Yes, Trump, or to be more accurate ‘his supporters’ are a problem. Yes they need to be defeated. But they are dying. This country has endured far worse than Donald Trump and his ilk. I’m pretty sure it can survive this too.
The Cokie Rule will be in effect, It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, it’s out there.
Speaking of: Morning Edition used to feature Cokie Roberts talking with the host every Monday morning, literally (literally literally!) phoning it in for five minutes of sleep-sogged barely-caffeinated cliché-ridden anodyne commentary on the political news du jour. At some point, the suits at NPR evidently decided that some balance was needed, so who did they bring in? That’s right, Jonah Goldberg!! Just another reason to rejoice that I’m retired and can sleep in and mostly give it a miss.

Trump campaign asks Capitol Hill for backing in Khan controversy
By Richard Cowan and David Morgan,Reuters
” Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign appealed to Capitol Hill for support on Monday as his attacks on the Muslim parents of a decorated U.S. soldier killed in Iraq drew sharp rebukes from fellow party members.
….
Rob Wasinger, a onetime congressional candidate who has been working for the Trump camp on congressional outreach, sent an email to senior Senate aides saying, “We want to get several member statements out today on this, and would really appreciate your help.”
@Mike in DC: I know. You’d expect at least a few of the NeverTrump folk to believe that the hated Clinton could only win by cheating, or that, given that they don’t believe she has any scruples whatsoever, will steal the election even if she could win fair and square. But will they thank her for stealing it? We are going to work hard to steal this election and will probably never get our due.

From my experience with a certain kind of white bigot, Trump fits the pattern perfectly. Lash out whenever someone from another ‘tribe’ does not show requisite deference, assume the worst without the slightest concern for reality, start smearing.

But just to give a splash of reality here. Roy Blunt–without criticizing Donald in any way–offered the mildest of suggestions that maybe Trump might possibly be better off talking about something else . . . and this is the way the Chicago Tribune reported it:
They never quote Blunt’s milquetoast statement. Instead they credit him as follows: “Fellow Republicans are joining the rising chorus of criticism of Donald Trump.”
Or, as the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported it:
This is better–they do note that the endorsement which he doesn’t withdraw was a “tepid endorsement”–but they don’t call out the tepid criticism for what it is. Never count on even the “responsible” media to call it as we see it.

Mark Halpern says trump’s pro-Putin and anti-Khan is not a good way to show that you are ready for prime time. He doesn’t know how this gets him to a winning coalition. He’s behind and doesn’t have a plan. Oh and don’t worry about the gop if Trump loses, they have majorities in congress and the states, so their only crisis is at the presidential level, so there may be an identity crisis but they are not in crisis. For a certain number, they may be stiffening their defense of Trump purely as an automatic defense mechanism against how badly their support of the shambling beast reflects on them. At least, during my moments of trying really hard to think well of my Reverend Aunt (an actual deo-damned Lutheran Minister) and her “I don’t care what he does. I may be voting for Hitler: we’ll just have to see what happens.” rationalization (wherein she tried also tried to overawe me with her superior understanding of all things because, well, her theological degree. Oh, and “Hillary isn’t a real feminist, like me, never done anything on her own.”) Most of the time, I’m just seriously enjoying the through of the RevAunt’s last flickering neurons kicking in as she watches her golden-faced boy parade their superior moral enlightenment and intellectual acumen. Here in the US, going into combat has always been the way that minority groups prove that they’re worthy of being in the mainstream. It’s one of the reasons that African-Americans were mostly kept out of combat roles until the 1950s and why putting women into the armed forces at all has been so fraught.
What Stone and his fellow assholes are trying to do is negate the Khans’ claim to citizenship by attacking their son’s service and making other claims about their purported “disloyalty.”
I really don’t see how this ends well for Trump or any of the Republicans, really. Even my conservative mom (who never votes anyway) is not on board with attacking a soldier who died in Iraq, much less attacking his MOTHER.

According to a new Gallop poll, Trump’s convention is the first since 1984 to hurt a candidate 51% of those polled said it made them less likely to vote for him, compared to 38% who said the same for Mitt Romney. Per Thomas Roberts, I’ll try to find a link.

I’ve seen that already. Basically, someone tracked the victim down years later and got her upset all over again by telling her Hillary was the defense attorney. I’ll see if I can find the debunking of the tapes — apparently, the only person who heard her “laughing” was that Daily Beast reporter.
I really fucking hate the media sometimes.

There’s a guy down the street who spent his career with the FDNY in Manhattan. He once told us his personal Trump story. Back about 1980 or so, there was some fire at a Trump property and the Donald eventually showed up to see what was happening. He demanded to be allowed inside, saying “Do you know who I am?!” to which the firefighters responded, “We don’t give a damn who you are. Nobody is allowed inside until we declare it safe to go in”.

Trump has been quoted today saying he thinks the November election will be “rigged”…one can only assume he means that if he doesn’t win. Not primaries…the big dance.
I just…I have no more words to describe my sadness that this ogre is actually being taken seriously by such a significant portion of this country. It is literally incredible .
Jeffro
@Schlemazel Khan:
Yes, me too. I like to think I don’t normally freak at the first sign of trouble, but the guy is clearly unstable and has nothing to lose by contesting the election, trying to start riots, and worse. And his supporters – speaking of unstable – holy cow. They just had a piece up on NBC news, live interviews of folks attending a Trump rally in Ohio: not only do they believe NOTHING except that which their god-king tells them, they radiate hate & potential violence.
Unfortunately, the whole “I think the election’s going to be rigged” serves multiple purposes for Trump: all-purpose excuse for losing, a great way to ramp up the fear factor in his supporters, and a great way to light a match when he loses.
1,000 Flouncing Lurkers (was fidelioscabinet)
@Monala: In that case, I apologize. I’ve seen that particular story dragged into far too many conversations, both online and in realspace, over the past month by people who were trolling, so that I have reached my limit there.
Seriously, though, when you hear a horrible story like that, try Snopes.com before you mention it to anyone else; they may have already researched it, and you can then pass it on as something that has been refuted, instead of offering a dangling thread of rumor, as we already have too many nasty rumors floating around about all the candidates*.
*I think Jill Stein is a Useful Idiot, but there’s no reason to pass on unverified reports about her, and passing on false stories about Trump only weakens the impact of the true ones.

So is driving a car. Again, with all due respect, they did everything they could to delegitimize a sitting President. How’d that work out for them?

A similar appeal was made to Republicans in the House of Representatives, according to a senior aide. ”
