This is the newest member of JeffreyW’s family and you can see him in action here. I squeed when I saw him. They’d recently lost both Jack and Annie, so I was happy to see this new addition. Not sure the rest of their four legged clan feels the same.
I’ve been wanting to post pictures of the new kitchen and ask your advice on some things, but most days I’m so bone tired I can’t string three words together much less put together a photo display. It will have to wait a few more days.
Things are hopping along here and new floors go in tomorrow. I may be hosting my first house guests next weekend. Which brings me to Hillary Rettig’s visit to Colorado and our attempt to get a meetup going. She’ll be in Golden this coming weekend (July 22-24) and here is her idea:
I’m sort of stuck about what to do in Golden. I’m assuming Friday night (July 22) will be the best time to get together, although Sunday night is also a possibility.
I was thinking about dinner – there’s a place called the Ali Baba grill that has vegan and nonvegan food but it has one middling review online. Any ethnic place would work for me, really.
She’ll be in Golden without transportation, so it seems like the best place to meet and sure is one of the prettiest places.
Contact Hillary (or me) using the contact link embedded in the Quick Links top of the page and let her know your interest and she’ll send you details.
I’m the wildcard in this meetup – I promised my nine year old niece she could come visit this summer and now that I’m moved in, doing my best to fulfill that promise. We’re still working out the details -but it may mean I’m picking her up that weekend or her parents are coming out that weekend for a visit and leaving her behind. LOL. But I’ll keep Hillary informed of my schedule and hope to see everyone there.
Consider this a mid-morning open thread.

Three officers are feared dead after a shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, officials said.
Kip Holden, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish Kip Holden, said authorities were still trying to get a handle on the situation, but added, “The count is three officers dead possibly.”
The victims may include police officers and sheriff’s deputies
“There is still an active scene. They are investigating,” he said. “Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.”
The shooter is believed to be down as well, Holden said.
“Everything is moving fast and I have not been able to verify everything,” he said.

Authorities did not immediately say where the Sunday morning shooting occurred, or release additional details.
But Baton Rouge Police Cpl. L. J. McKneely said “multiple” officers were down. He couldn’t elaborate on the extent of their injuries.
The scene, however, is contained, McKneely said.

Poll: Clinton Keeps 5-Point Lead Over Trump Heading Into Conventions
Source: NBC News
On the eve of the GOP convention, Hillary Clinton maintains a five-point national lead over Donald Trump even after a period of negative news for the presumptive Democratic nominee, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Clinton leads the presumptive GOP nominee 46 percent to 41 percent in a poll that finds both candidates facing sizable disadvantages and challenges ahead of the party conventions which kick off Monday for the GOP in Cleveland and a week later for Democrats in Philadelphia.
Those numbers are unchanged from one month ago with the poll conducted after FBI Director James Comey strongly rebuked Clinton over her email practices even though he determined that she had not committed a crime. The poll was also conducted before Trump selected Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his vice-presidential running mate.
Clinton has the advantage among African Americans (84 to 7 percent), voters ages 18-29 (55 to 32 percent) and women (52 to 37 percent). The margin among Latinos will be released later on Sunday.

Does anyone know if there’s an official protocol for police arriving at a gunfight in progress?
There’s probably two opposing priorities: protect civilians and neutralize the shooters. (“Opposing” because you neutralize shooters by shooting them, which could put civilians at risk.)
I wonder if it’s possible to contain the area where the shooters are, and not go charging in with one’s own guns blazing. Cordon off the immediate area, ascertain whether civilians are in the line of fire and, if not, let the gunslingers kill each other off before the police step in.
I can think of a few reasons why that might not be a preferable course of action, but it would hopefully prevent police officers getting killed in situations like this one.

A retired Baltimore homicide detective who sued the Eastern Shore town where he was fired as police chief is joining the Baltimore state’s attorney’s office as an investigator.
Kelvin Sewell, 53, will work as a contract employee investigating felony, homicide and violent crime cases, according to documents submitted to the city spending board. He also will help locate and interview witnesses and act as a liaison with police agencies. His salary is listed at $63,925.
The city’s spending panel voted Wednesday to authorize the spending.
Sewell spent more than 20 years with the Baltimore Police Department, retiring as a sergeant in the homicide unit in 2010. He joined the Pocomoke City Police Department on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, and the next year was elevated to chief — becoming the town’s first black top cop.
Last summer, Sewell was fired by the City Council. He has alleged that his dismissal was retaliation for not firing two officers after they had filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Not to sound too callous, but a lot of this escalating gun-related lunacy is because the police unions get angry at the wrong people. Try Nepal House on Washington Ave for more vegan and vegetarian options. It’s in a beautiful old house and they do have a lunch buffet plus lots of tables and some private rooms. The Middle Eastern place (Ali Baba’s) isn’t as good as it used to be, the service is always a work in progress, and most important: NO alcohol. Nepal House might satisfy the most people for the best price.
For those going, give yourself extra time because (1) traffic is bad here, and (2) it is even worse because of major, major road/overpass construction going on at the main entrance to town. It backs up for miles when they have to close down to just one lane each direction.

Students Develop Smart Mat to Help Diabetics Avoid Amputation
Students creating new innovations is always inspiring. We have smart phones, smart watches, smart TV’s, smart lighting, and smart everything else, pretty much. Now, thanks to two students at Jackson State University, we have a smart mat for those with diabetes. It helps diabetics catch the warning signs to help prevent the need for amputations on their lower extremities.
Cehvan Baker and Jann Butler, both computer engineering students at Jackson State University, created a mat that “gauges foot temperature” in order to help determine if there is a problem with blood flow to their extremities. The earlier it’s caught, the less likely they are to have to go through amputation. When there is a change in foot temperature by more than four degrees between testings, then there is a higher likelihood that there is a circulation problem. This information can then be relayed to the treating physician and followed up with them.
The fact that this testing can be done at home makes it even more accessible and, I would venture to say, reliable. Reason being is that they can do this on their own time, at the same time, and in a convenient manner. The more frequently these tests can be administered, the more likely that patients are to catch something early. Currently, these issues are being caught too late because there is little way to measure temperature differences until an ulcer forms.

When was the last time there was a shooting in the US that had a body rigged with explosives?
He could be wired with explosives, but he could be dipped in Po-210, too.
This mania for “we gotta be absolutely sure that this isn’t a 1/1000000 event” before, say, any assistance is offered to someone shot means that lots and lots of people die needlessly.
I’m no expert, and I could be wrong, but that’s the way it looks to me at the moment. YMMV.
