After this weekend, anyone who says there is no difference between Trump and Clinton can just go fuck themselves to progressive heaven.

Also, I’m on the computer all day for work and goof off on it more than I should too, so this happens to me a lot:
Open thread!
Corner Stone
I just can’t with people that did not recoil in horror and disgust at Trump’s speech today.
Roger Moore
That cartoon illustrates why you should invest in a quality kitchen timer.
humboldtblue
We all seem to spend a lot of time staring at screens, even then hens.
humboldtblue
@Roger Moore:
Or move to a place that doesn’t have hallways as long as those in Versailles.
Corner Stone
Sorry but I am so past Lin Manuel Miranda.
JPL
@Roger Moore: I had one, but it freaked my dog out. He’s a rescue so who knows why. I seared a prime filet and went to finish it for five minutes in the oven. Long story short, after forty minutes, it was inedible. I can relate.
@Corner Stone: It was the scariest speech I’ve heard outside a movie theater.
germy
@humboldtblue: The hen seems fascinated with the screen.
Last week our cat jumped on my lap while I was working on the computer, so I took a break and put up a full-screen youtube video (made especially for cats) of various birds hopping around pecking at seeds. She couldn’t take her eyes off the screen.
Corner Stone
@humboldtblue: Ha! Three panels of angst.
MomSense
I’m a little freaked out as a huge pick up truck I’ve never seen before seems to be circling through my little street repeatedly. It’s out of the way so we rarely have random cars nearby.
Last time this happened it was gun nutz after I said something about what happened at the school in CT. At least now I have a dog who sounds vicious when she barks.
JPL
@Corner Stone: That’s where I draw the line. His commencement speech at UPenn was the best ever, even though he’s Roy.
Villago Delenda Est
So much for Teh Donald’s “major speech”. NOW the question is can he avoid a meltdown before Cleveland. Will the GOP do something about this asshole before then? On one hand, I want him gone. On the other hand, he’s going to take the GOP down with him if he is indeed the nominee.
Betty Cracker
@Corner Stone: The phenomenon eludes me too. Good to know I’m not alone.
germy
@MomSense: Can you see the license plate #?
JPL
@MomSense: If you see it again, call the police. Seriously, that is how they stopped the guy from Indiana, who might have wanted to do harm.
Betty Cracker
@MomSense: Got any wasp-hornet spray?
Villago Delenda Est
@JPL: THIS. Take no chances.
Vickie Feminist
I badly screwed up hard boiled eggs today–a new first. When baking cookies, I’ve learned to never leave the kitchen. But for anything else, I’m lucky to have thick bottomed pans.
Corner Stone
@JPL: Did he rhyme the whole thing with words on cue cards students pulled out and displayed at random?
It’s like any overhyped fad. There has to be some point where people pull back and take a deep breath then ask, really?
Southern Beale
@Corner Stone:
Trump’s speech today really illustrated in living color why we need a diplomat in the White House, not a narcissistic hot-head.
MomSense
He is going much faster than the speed limit- which is 15 since it is such a small curvy street.. I think I’ll call the police and ask them to drive through.
We have Bundyesque types here.
Steeplejack
@Roger Moore:
I’ve gotten into the habit of setting the timer on the microwave for even simple cooking tasks, because my capacity for computer distraction is huge.
germy
@MomSense: Good idea. Let him explain himself to the authorities.
trollhattan
After this weekend I suspect Bernie’s relevance fades to black. We need all hands on deck to destroy Trump and hit ctrl-alt-del on the Republican Party.
JPL
@Corner Stone: It was great because his point was tell your story so your children and grandchildren will know who you are. He used Pam and Jim of the Office as an example. Sometimes we are Roy and that’s okay. It was good.
Mnemosyne
@MomSense:
I’m with everyone else — call the cops.
Corner Stone
@Vickie Feminist: How would one mess up hard boiled eggs?
Anything with sugar has to be watched. I am consistently surprised when on Chopped a pro chef stops looking at a pan on the stove that has a high sugar content. It’s always going to caramelize/burn.

My neighbor called first. The police car is outside. He said he’s going to sit here for awhile. Phew.

We are the worst moms in the entire history of ever, because our 16yo didn’t know that ‘violence up to and including death’ was one of the commonly discussed [by assholes of various religious traditions] responses to her parents’ sexual orientation. Until yesterday.
Or we are the best moms in the history of ever, because we got her through the sewer slime that is this otherwise great country’s contempt for women [and men who don’t act like John Fucking Wayne all the time] until she was almost full grown.
Accepting your wagers, keeping in mind that she is hiding in her room playing music loud and being pissed at us because someone! could! have! told! her! this fact about our culture so she wouldn’t have been so surprised.
I think someone who is old enough to tolerate and absorb this unpleasant revelation is old enough for ‘The Times of Harvey Milk’, which I have been thinking of since I saw the group of club kids loading one of their peers into the bed of a pickup, holding her flat and perfectly still to protect her body. There is a film clip in the documentary from the White Night riots reflecting that same image, only the injured had been assaulted by cops and firefighters.
So…we aren’t burning shit down, the police come when we call, but…has anything important changed?
SteveinSC
Hmmm, Mateen and the gay dating app? Self-hating in Fort Pierce. Pulse regular? Uh-oh, there goes another right-wing meme down the drain. Will Trump recant?
germy
@MomSense:
It’s weird. I always imagine all you balloon-juicers to be living in progressive paradises. But then occasionally one or more of you will mention seeing drumpf signs in your neighborhood or stuff like that.
I’ve never lived anywhere (and I’ve done more than my share of moving around) that didn’t have at least one or two extreme right neighbors. The whole nine yards: bumper stickers, campaign yard signs, ugly bigoted talk.
dr. bloor
@Villago Delenda Est:
That this is even a reasonable question is a head trauma crazy. It might actually take Trump shooting someone on Fifth Avenue–and even then, it would have to be a middle-aged white guy–for him to lose the nomination at this point.
germy
@Southern Beale: I can’t imagine more than one cat. I feel outnumbered as it is.

Re: tRump: interesting FB phenomenon right now. There’s a quote of St. Ronnie’s going around about AK-47s and other assault weapons not being protected by the 2ND Amendment, and the wing nuts are all “yeah, but he had to be told what to say.” Alzheimer’s is giving wingnuts the perfect out: every time Ronaldus Magnus said something inconvenient they insist it was the disease. In 20 years they will be saying the same about Hair Furor.

@germy: When I lived in Dallas in the eighties, a neighbor who just adopted two abused children, had to hire security. Here’s something odd I noticed. My local PBS station plays a full hour of the Lawrence Welk show every Saturday. And then every few months during the pledge drives they ask us please, please to support the Lawrence Welk show. Because Public Television is the only media outlet willing to carry him. The hippies at my Public TV Station! The same station that has Peter Yarrow come on and help with the pledges.
And then I watch the Welk show, and they do production numbers where they complain about the hippies. Song and dance routines where they long for the good ol’ days, and how the hippies are knocking down their heroes.
Let the invisible hand of the free market decide, I say. And see if anyone shows Lawrence Welk.
Okay, my rant is done.

Are we going to take over this thread with hoop talk?

I wish the repubs that denounce Trump’s comments while still supporting him would act half as tough as they talk. There are soldiers and cops that are risking their lives to protect our country and these yahoos won’t risk their jobs to do what’s right and best for the country. It’s not good enough to do their usual mea culpa after the harm has been done a la civil rights, Vietnam, gay rights, Iraq war, global warming, etc. So sick of these guys finally admitting they are wrong but then saying it’s too late. The threat is clear. Your inability to wholeheartedly endorse this guy is a clear sign that you know he’s a problem. For once, put the country first you morans.

A few years back he was complaining about how the neighborhood used to seem so friendly but nobody seems to talk to anyone any more. I pointed out his racist asshole bumper stickers might have something to do with it, and he went off on some first amendment rant. What can they do? Not that I’m defending them, but if they somehow managed to blackmail or strong-arm or procedurally outmaneuver Trump so that he doesn’t get the nomination after all, what do you suppose happens then? The voters picked Trump: they’re not going to just accept that. If you remove Trump, the ensuing outrage from the right wing base will guarantee that the Democrats get the White House – which is why I’m convinced Republicans will never do it. But even if they did, what then? You’re looking at primarying challenges all over the map in 2018 and 2020.

One of the things that gave me the giggles as Trumps rant came to an end is the thought of just how much fun the GOP Convention ought to be.
Do you think that Reince Priebus, or Rinse Prius, is on meds yet? The dude must be on some level know what a shit-show he and Paul Ryan are likely to have on their hands. How will they try to keep Donald and his most “ardent” supports muzzled for as much of the convention as possible?
It’s been one ray of hope as the horrific news bounced around.
germy
@efgoldman: I wait for Doc Martin and stare grimly at Lawrence Welk. My wife shakes her head sadly. I tell her when I see the Welk show I am transported to 1967 and my Uncle and Aunt’s rec room. The adults would gossip and smoke. My cousins and I played with matchbox cars while the smeary, pastel video of Welk’s pale blue or green suits, the insipid arrangements, the straw hats, the identical women, the neat “mod” haircuts of the brass players, the lone tapdancing black man, and the garish sets cast weird light and sounds into the room.
When my wife watches it, she’s immediately reminded of her grandmother’s house. So I guess it is nostalgia.

I think the narrative of the Orlando story that the GOPers are pushing is both misguided and incorrect on the facts. While the shooter cited ISIL in his last-minute call to 911, recent reports suggest that he was seen at the Pulse nightclub at least a dozen times and had asked others out on dates. Perhaps he couldn’t bear the thought of accepting who he was, and channeled that self-loathing into rage and hatred for the LGBT community, as well as his wife.

The only thing I know about beer is that some people seem to think different kinds taste different. But it’s all beer to me.

After this weekend, anyone who says there is no difference between Trump and Clinton can just go fuck themselves to progressive heaven.
Truth. Somebody pass this along to H.A. Goodman, Walker Bragman, and all those other fools at Salon who still refuse to pull their heads out of their @$$es to see this.

@Matt McIrvin: Heh, I never realized Haverhill was on the border. I grew up in Topsfield but moved away 20 years ago. Will be back there in October, staying at a buddy’s in Amesbury.

Reference J.C.’s comments, I expect Susan Sarandon and Dr. Stein, etc. will explain that Trump will “heighten the contradictions.” That worked so well for Italy in 1923 (when Mussolini seized power) and 1933 Germany.
By the way, Trump and the Republican Party, I expect have already had a revolutionary effect on the way the world views the United States. Not in a good way.

I adore Lin-Manuel Miranda, he is a fine human being in addition to being a creative and talented composer/lyricist. I know all this Hamilton attention leads to backlash, because whenever something is beloved, the contrarian crowd has to come out and piss all over it. (I’ve been part of that contrarian crowd more than once, but not in the case of LMM).

@Matt McIrvin:
For several years and about 80,000 miles I had an F-350 Powerstroke diesel truck.
I needed it to tow things in general and a backhoe in particular. It had all the power in the world, and I never saw a wisp of smoke, nor needed to floor it to take the backhoe up a steep hill briskly.
Those guys “rolling coal” have illegally modified their trucks to gain additional unnecessary power. They should be jailed.
