Today in Houston, where they’ve had over a foot of rain:
Damn! I got caught in a rainstorm in Jacksonville, FL many years ago and was driving down a water-covered street, trying to find a place to pull over. Suddenly, I could feel my car floating, which is a scary-ass feeling.
Fortunately for me, I floated to a spot where I was able to get traction and pull up onto higher ground. The guy in the video wasn’t so lucky, but he’s damn fortunate to be alive. Amazing how the lights and windshield wipers were still working when only the radio antenna remained above the surface.
Be careful out there, Houston Juicers. Better yet, don’t go anywhere if you can help it.

Hey everyone, just catching up on the circus and noticed something odd. Even though the experts are predicting Drumpf will come in somewhere between 1100-1200 delegates, they are confident that he will fail to secure the nomination. (The whole Nate Silver crowd, for instance).
Do they really think they will deny him the nomination when he is so close? This is going to be fun to watch.

Unfortunately we’ll be seeing more and more floods like this.

Once, when I was a kid, my mother drove into about 4 feet of water with me and my younger brothers in the car. It was a maroon station wagon that thankfully was slow to fill with water, so we all got out of the car just fine. The car, however, was never the same. Once it dried out and, had some engine work done, it sounded like an airplane taking off. Ultimately, my parents sold it to a guy that turned out to be my 7th grade math teacher.
Good luck those in Houston.

The driver sounds completely stunned. I wonder how he managed to get out of the driver’s side door.
Up here in western WI we’re hoping for rain in the next few days. Temps in the 70s and 80s, no rain since we got home over two weeks ago. Dry!

I think “rescued” is a bit of a stretch. The poor guy was in around 3.5′ of water but for some reason was still swimming instead of just standing up.
This isn’t as bad as some past floods like Alicia but it’s pretty bad. I worry about what tomorrow morning will look like. It’s slacked up now but they forecast another deluge tonight.

@LAO: Whew, glad y’all made it out alive. My floating car was an old Volvo sedan. That thing was as durable as a tank. It never stalled during its brief career as a boat, and once it dried out, it was just fine for an old clunker (it was about 15 when the flood happened).
As I was waiting for the water to recede, I helped a couple of other people who’d driven into the flooded area push their stalled cars out. The one thing that stands out in my mind about that experience was that there were floating islands of fire ants that would swarm and bite anyone unlucky enough to come into contact with them. Fucking fire ants.

Over the last 6 years I’ve been building a stream to drain my property. When it flows it’s usually very gentle and burbling, but occasionally we’ll get 3-4 inches in one storm and this little stream turns into a raging flow of water. It destroyed several previous versions of my stream so I’ve rebuilt on a far bigger scale in order to accommodate these rare but damaging storms.
I don’t think there’s anyway I could accommodate a foot of rain.

There used to be a few viaducts in the Chicago area that would flood with just an inch or two of rain. TV news loved it when that happened because they could run there with their cameras and catch all these cars in the water over their hoods. Can’t imagine what it would have been like with a foot of raid. In fact, a foot of rain would wipe out a lot of people along the Des Plaines River and Salt Creek.
Not sure there is anywhere in the country that could weather a foot of rain without major problems.

Just as the sun was coming up (a seemingly theoretical construct considering the layer of opaque rain clouds), I was chasing my trash wheely-bin down my street as knee-deep water was whisking it away.
But, here in the near downtown part of Houston, the heavy rains have moved on. We will still have to deal with the extreme amount of water that returned to earth in the northwest precincts and is now beginning to drain into the several bayous that flow through the city.

I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@Germy: Good question. It seems like the most sensible option is for the national party to split: Teabaggers get 3/4, the “traditional” GOP gets the rest. But they both want to have political power and know that splitting like that would damage the national party’s chances to have any. And the “traditional” people don’t want to give up their control of the party. – their upset with the Teabaggers doesn’t go as far as to walk away from them…
I don’t know if the national party means anything in the races they’ve been winning (around here in NoVA, the Republicans never say they’re Republican on their literature or in their ads, and haven’t since ~ 2006 or so (maybe earlier)). Maybe they’ll let the national party implode and forget about trying to win the White House for a few cycles and just try to build-up their strength in the state and local races.
They’re not going away in any event. We need to not be complacent about the fall, 2018, 2020, 2022, etc, etc., and in all the off-year races that are far too common.
Cheers,
Scott.

I was on a freeway on ramp in pouring rain at night and suddenly felt my front tires floating about! The on ramp sloped so I could not understand how enough rain had accumulated to get my Saturn wagon floating. As I tried to open the door, a couple of young red necks in a lifted pickup rode past, hollered “you picked a stupid place to park” and then gunned it creating a huge wave. The wave pushed the car to the side enough that one tire hit ground. I crawled out the window (one good reason for manual widow controls), thankful the car wasn’t still free floating and would therefore probably not float over to crush me. The car was so new I somehow got the engine replacement under waranty. Biggest long term bummer was the pretty black velvet dress and shoes I was wearing to a big deal party was ruined on its inaugural wear. Well, that and the damage to my bare feet walking half a mile to a gas station to call for help pre cell phone days. You really don’t mind the rain once you arealready soaked!

Our first house in Vegas, we experienced a “migration” of fire ants. They were marching through, coming in through the walls, pouring down from things like nail holes where pictures had hung. We found them inside jars of peanut butter (they followed the threads on the jar lid). Found them in our 1-year old’s crib, in our quadriplegic son’s bed & wheelchair. We cleared them out 2 times, they came back. We did it again, then found them pouring in through a crack around the window in our shower. (my husband’s incoherent scream at finding that at 1 a.m. was something to hear!)
Finally we decamped to my parent’s house & let an exterminator come in with the big guns (cyanide around the footings of the house, plus whatever else). Probably toxic as hell, but it did work. Thank FSM we didn’t have pets at the time.

Texas is almost 850 miles wide. The coastal strip from Houston to Beaumont and 50 miles inland** is well watered. An additional 100 miles beyond that is mostly okay, but beyond that…no.
On of the problems inland is that when it has been raining, these rain events tend to drop a lot of water all at once. When several months worth of rain falls in two days, a little soaks into the ground and the rest of it finds the nearest sub division or holiday park to wash away.
**The East Texas woodlands from Houston north to Texarkana (290 mi tall by 120 mi wide) get most of the rain that soaks in. The plain, prairie , and mountain sections of Texas (at most 700 mi by 500 mi) are still facing drought conditions.

I attended Southwest* Texas State University between 1983 and 1989, and that article was incredibly depressing. Each time I drive through it looks less like the place I knew. Even though I never actually lived in San Marcos (lived with my folks in New Braunfels and commuted), I spent a lot of time there. Sad to hear that it’s gotten so bad.
But, word is that Alvin Ord’s is still serving sandwiches, so things haven’t completely gone to shit.
El Nino years do tend to bring floods to Central Texas. 1998 saw unprecendented flooding in the area. Houses that had stood by the banks of the Guadalupe for decades were swept away, leaving nothing but concrete slabs. My folks lived between the Guadalupe and the Comal, and while they were high enough that they were never threatened, the couldn’t go anywhere for a couple of days.
My fear is that our new normal is going to be that we get our normal total inches of rain, but that it all falls on one day.

Barack Obama NEVER would have tolerated his supporters behaving like that, and he let us know that loud and clear long before it could ever have ever gotten to that point.
Bernie is now squandering all the good will he had with people who are not fanatics. I have seen bosses that I had previously respected move up the chain and become so enamored of power that they were barely recognizable. I really wonder if Bernie’s popularity has gone to his head and now he’s just on a quest for power.
I cannot think of any other reason for him to throw the Democratic party under the bus like this.

Maybe the Nationalists can seize the Alamo.
A group that advocates for Texas seceding from the United States says at least 22 local Republican conventions passed resolutions last month that called for a vote on secession at the state convention, The Houston Chronicle reported Friday.
Ten of the counties confirmed to the newspaper that the resolutions passed at their conventions, but an official count is not expected until May. That goes to show the Texas Nationalist Movement has gained some momentum since 2012, when a secession resolution passed at just one county convention, according to the Chronicle.

@Dog Dawg Damn: You question whether “they will deny him the nomination when he is so close.” I’m not sure myself, but I think it’s helpful to remember that it’s not a question of whether “they” will deny him the nomination, close or otherwise; it’s about 1237 delegates (IIRC) individually voting for Trump, or not. The vast majority of Trump’s delegates will be bound to, at least on paper and for the first round, so if he has 1237 plus, he’s likely to win. But if he’s 5, 10, or 50 short, it comes down to whether 5, 10, or 50 delegates who are under no personal obligation whatsoever to vote for Trump elect to do so.
Some very well might, in the interests of preserving the Republican party and all that. But none of them have to, which is where it gets interesting . . .

I was interested in Senator Sanders until I understood he had a sparse strategy and less tactical plans to accomplish his goals. The goals themselves are admirable, but that all that is.
Even Sanders the man is no longer admirable, not at all. If he screws the Democratic Party out of the election, I will never forgive him, and his biographies will all tell of how he destroyed democracy in America.

@lamh36: I’ve really come around–and I suppose I have to thank the Sanders people and Sanders himself for this–to actively liking Hillary and really supporting her. The thing is I can see now, after 8 years of Obama, that you really have to have someone in the white house who can keep their eyes on the prize and just keep moving forward no matter what is slung at them. All the stuff Bernie is proposing to do? He won’t manage because he doesn’t have the sitzfleisch to accomplish it. He gets angry, he wants a quick fix and a grand gesture. She doesn’t get angry and she is under no illusions about how hard it will be to get anything done. I also see her as someone who has grown with the country. I know I have. Bill is still stuck in the past but she isn’t. I think she is someone new pressure groups can take their concerns to and that is where I’d urge the Bernie people to go next. Organize, fundraise, run candidates, and pressure her and Congress to pass specific legislation.

– ~ $200,000 from Jane’s severance package after she was sacked as President of Burlington College
Total: ~ $539,000. Man of the people indeed.

@Brachiator: You and me both. Mumbai/Bombay has a special place in my heart. There is so much to Mumbai than its seedy underbelly, and glamorous film industry. Much is made of the experience of the outsider who has come to Bombay to make it big but what about an insider’s perspective, whose home Bombay has been for generations, people with names like Mahimkar, Bandrekar, Kharkar etc (names of the original fishing villages of Mahim, Bandra and Khar that made up Bombay). No one has told their story AFAIK. There are millions of white and blue collar workers, native Mumbaikars and more recent transplants who lead hectic but perfectly non glamorous and non-criminal lives, come rain or shine. They are stoic, even in the face of terrorist attacks.
There are other things Bombay is known for besides the infamous underworld and its slums, which seems to be the focus of the writing aimed at western audiences. Among other things Mumbai is Maharashtra’s capital, so its the seat of the state government, home to India’s film and television and even the fashion world. It has produced many of India’s best cricket players, it boasts of India’s biggest stock exchange, and oldest educational institutions, its a great city for food too. The city has always been at the political vanguard, be it leftist labor movements in the 1970s or the rise of the right in the 90s or the independence struggle against the British. The Indian National Congress was formed in Mumbai in the 1885.
Its like LA, Boston and NYC put together, in terms of its importance to India. All the focus on the underworld obviates this.
