C’mon, Bernie! Baud! needs a tie!
Calouste
Let’s all prepare for Rubio’s Florida victory speech, where he explains how getting crushed by 18% in the winner-takes-all primary in your home state is really winning.
geg6
CBS just called Florida for Clinton and Trump. Poor little Marco. Betty will be happy.
I Am Not Jon Snow
Well that didn’t take long. Looks like all the nets have called FL for Trump, based on projections.
hellslittlestangel
A lot of “pundits” said Rubio would finish 3rd in Florida. Third! Ha! Onward to Cleveland, Mario!
NotMax
Rubio flattened in the Miami Vise.

ABC news just cut in to regular programming and said Marco is dropping out. Or did I misunderstand them? He hasn’t SAID he’s dropping out…
Mike in NC
Pity party tonight for Lil Marco, the smarmy shit-eating weasel.
Peale
So it looks like Cruz is the republican’s last hope.
dmsilev
@Peale: Oh, to have the hard-liquor contract for RNC headquarters tonight.
Peale
How does it work when a candidate with delegates drops out for the republicans? Does the state party decide how they vote? Does the candidate decide? Or do they still have to vote for the candidate who originally won them at the convention.
dmsilev
TPM headline: “Donald Trump Upsets Rubio In Florida”. Yes, I’m sure Marco is plenty unhappy right now.
I Am Not Jon Snow
@Germy: I thought he said he was staying in regardless of what happened tonight? Perhaps the scale of the rout will cause him to rethink that. The only reason for staying in would be to have those delegates at the convention, where he might be able to use them to stop Trump. Assuming, of course, that the Donald doesn’t win outright before then.
Ultraviolet Thunder
I can’t stay up for the results. They’ll be there in the morning. The only thing that really interests me on the Dem side is MO. On the GOP side OH.

@I Am Not Jon Snow: So the 3-2-1 strategy turned into a 3-4-3-5-6-5-4-1 strategy in primaries? Took a little longer than expected, is all. Rubio is making progress. He should stay in.
He doesn’t like going to work in the Senate anyway.
Peale
@dmsilev: God. The press really bought into Marco, man of the moment. the headlines from the times are all about Rubio. It’s not news that he’s losing.

Trump wins as expected in Florida (99 – WTA.) Exit polling has Kasich taking Ohio (66 – WTA.) Other exit polling has Trump and Cruz in a dead heat in Missouri (52 – WTA) and NC (72 – proportional.)
GOP is running out of time and delegates to avoid a faction fight in Cleveland.

Although it can vary dependent on any particular state party’s rules, generally speaking if there are pledged delegates they remain pledged for the first ballot at the convention subject to any instruction from the candidate to do otherwise.

Early yet, but Clinton has huge margins in Ohio and North Carolina as well as the landslide in Florida. Did the Trump effect force Democrats to coalesce around their front runner? The only other calls I have received this primary have been for US congressman (1 call from the incumbent) and state congressman (2 or 3 from the incumbent). Another lie from Lil Marco
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said Tuesday he plans to stay in the Republican race for the White House even if he doesn’t win the primary in his home state tonight.
Rubio said polls that show him trailing frontrunner Donald Trump by 20 points are “way out of whack” and “absurd.”
“Tomorrow our plan is to be in Utah campaigning irrespective of tonight,” he said in a radio interview on WDBO, which was first flagged by BuzzFeed. “It would be a lot better to go to Utah being the winner of the Florida primary. It would give us a tremendous amount of momentum. It would give us 99 delegates, and that’s the way we want to do it tonight.”

They’re not afraid of (what’s left of) the moderate GOP voting for Hillary–those folks can be relied upon to split their ticket. What scares them, IMHO, is that with Trumpolini at the head of the ticket, many non-BSI Republicans may prefer not to vote at all–& with Latinos & AAs (figuratively) crawling over their dying grandmas to vote against him, the Trumpenproletariat may well not be enough by itself to stop the Democrats taking back the Senate–& ramming through left-of-center judicial nominees to sit for the next generation.

Michigan was such an oddball, I’ve been willing to pause and see if it was just a fluke, or a sign that the polling is broken and things weren’t settled after all. It’s sounding like Michigan was the 1% on the other side of 99%, but I can wait to make a decision until tonight is done.
But honestly, when Bernie failed to take Iowa, I figured it was all over but the shouting.

@Ready: That’s a poll question being asked in Ohio, probably in preparation for it to happen. Somewhere between 35 and 40 % of Republicans said that they’d vote for a third party candidate if Trump won the nomination.

Ohio’s been called for Kasich, so he’s sticking around. I had to mute MSNBC where the Republican spokesman started comparing Kasich to Lincoln as the best of the best. He’s the establishment’s best shot and he can play moderate when he is very, very conservative, although he’s unlikely to start a war because the leader of another country calls his hands small.
Cacti
Ohio is Kasich’s one and only win in the GOP primary to date.
I think I read somewhere that the RNC has a bylaw that for candidates who contested the primary nomination, they have to have won at least 10 contests to get nominated at the national convention.

Jeez, I thought Ohio would be close. Can we bury the ‘Clinton’s a lousy campaigner’ narrative now?
And Kasich may have just torpedoed Il Douche’s path to winning the nom outright.
@PsiFighter37: He can’t win it outright, but that’s not the goal. The goal is to make a strong enough run to make the case at the contested convention that he should be the guy. Its a long shot, but Kasich loves him some long shot campaigns.

Trump is the best shot at stopping Trump. He has his followers but we will see if there is a ceiling to it and that is a flag for him if he is doing anything like making an assessment rather than going by the seat of his pants. So far he has been able to pull it out of his a- – but we will see how long that continues… hey also hear he is having some drama on his team related to his campaign manager… Trump has plenty of enemies now who are highly motivated. He is shrewd but tired and because his team is not configured for a campaign with disseminated and shared responsibility among reliable and knowledgeable core leaders and having to jump to a highly unpredictable and sleep deprived lead — things could get very interesting…
Matt McIrvin
@dmsilev: If I recall correctly, most sore-loser laws don’t apply to presidential races, but there are maybe two or three states where they do, and Texas is one of them.
In most states, a bigger consideration is the deadline for submitting the petition signatures to get on the ballot as an independent candidate.
I think a Trump sore-loser campaign might be a write-in campaign in most of the country, and consequently I suspect it wouldn’t actually come to much. But it might depress Republican turnout.

@Ready:
Are you for real?
All Hillary has to do is win the same states Obama did at the same numbers – tricky but doable – while the Trump and anti-Trump candidates tear each other apart for a share of the voters that would normally vote Republican. The odds of a diminished Trump AND a diminished anti-Trump campaign even getting the Electoral votes will drop because they can negate each other in close states where Hillary wins instead of either of them. Just think of how Hillary could win a divided South Carolina where all the Dems vote for her at 48 percent, but because of Trump getting 33 with a Rubio third party run getting 20 percent, Hillary wins those Electorals..
