I see if I want an afternoon distraction I’m going to have to post it myself.
This is a quick Authors in Our Midst. I received an email this week reminding me that one of our authors is offering a free download this week.
BULLETS – mystery thriller by Elijah Drive
Professional poker player Jon “Big Slick” Elder was minding his own business in a diner when an Arizona sheriff walked in and killed the man sitting next to him, a Mexican day laborer accused of murder. The law officer then arrested Slick simply because the sheriff didn’t like the color of Slick’s skin.
Slick knew that the stranger who had been sitting next to him at the diner was no murderer because, in addition to cards, Slick also kills people for money. The poor man didn’t have the look, but Slick does, and with the help of a beautiful assistant district attorney, a Navajo state trooper and a homegrown federal agent, Slick sets out to prove the dead man’s innocence. What he discovers, as he digs deeper, is a deadly mystery that threatens not only him, but his newfound friends as well. But Slick hates to have anyone… ANYONE… toss him his shoes and tell him to get out of town.
If you need something to read this week, there you have it! Again if you missed it, here are the first three posts: ONE, TWO and THREE
Consider this a book and open thread. See if we can avoid any hint of politics. Unless it’s a political thriller.
trollhattan
Not a thriller necessarily, but Scotty Walker appears to have appointed a bigot to the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
The Mystery of course, is how Walker remains in office.
Iowa Old Lady
That looks like a really compelling book!
I’m reading a police mystery right now, Adrian McKinty’s new book, Rain Dogs. McKinty writes about Belfast during the Troubles and historical events get blended in. This one started with Muhammad Ali’s visit to Belfast, but a previous book’s plot used Delorean’s auto factory. I’d forgotten he apparently ran coke to finance the plant.
ETA: BULLETS is on its way to my kindle. Can’t beat that price!
Adam L Silverman
They call themselves the Dine, which is Dine for “the people”. Navajo is an insult that was given to them by their enemies and competitors in other Southwestern tribes.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: See where Pat banned all talk of US politics!
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Pat who? Huh? I’m very confused. Also, my comment really isn’t germane, hence the deletion.
Adam L Silverman
And before anyone asks me: we have a new, superseding indictment for the Bundy Bunch involved with the Malheur standoff and I’ll post it up later today.
Right now I’m looking for anything on Jeannette Finicum’s press conference that she announced she’d be holding today when she released her statement yesterday.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Lang
Adam L Silverman
@raven: oh, I was trying to figure out how Pat Buchanan or Pat Robertson fit into the now deleted comment on the Dine…
I haven’t been over to see what he’s got posted for several days. All I can imagine is that the comments sections must be a mess for him to declare something like that. Its unfortunate.
Elijah Drive
Thank you for the link! I’m running to a meeting, but will be back later tonight for any questions or feedback anyone wants to give me. It’s very much a political thriller about race and immigration, too.
Calouste
Apparently introducing women by focusing on their physical attributes is not limited to film scripts.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@Adam L Silverman: Pat Lang, which is probably really comical since I this is replying to your now deleted comment about the Dine.

I am getting a lot of new books from the Authors in our Midst series. So glad you are posting them
Mnemosyne
Doing my preliminary research for my book, which Adam very kindly helped me with last night. (If I ever get it published, you will be in the acknowledgements/author’s note and be able to add “historical romance” to your cites. ;-) I think I’ve figured out which character is going to be the villain’s target, and why, and why the villain changes his focus at a crucial point. Now I just have to decide how super-evil and manipulative the villain really is.
And I’m almost done with the Scrivener tutorial. The good thing is that it’s exhaustingly comprehensive, and the bad thing is that it’s exhaustingly comprehensive. Or, as the tutorial itself says:
Adam L Silverman
@raven: BTW: the reason that Gen Breedlove wants to put an Armor BCT – and based on the way its described, my guess is it would be the BCT I was cultural advisor for from 2007-2008, the 2nd BCT/1AD (The Iron Brigade) is that there is almost no American armor on the continent right now. The current USAREUR Commander has probably requested it in order to be able to have the equipment for exercises. I don’t know the current USAREUR commander, but I was the previous one’s cultural advisor throughout 2014 on temporarily assigned control (TACON). When exercises were suddenly laid on after Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, the USAREUR commander at the time only had a handful of armor available to him. One of which is the old WW II relic mounted on display in front of the gym at Baumholder…

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): I got it. I’m back on track. All is good.
I’ll have your fix up around 9 tonight or so. Can you and LAO and Steve in ATL hold out that long considering you all doubled your doses yesterday?

@Mnemosyne: You’re quite welcome. Glad I could be of help. Sorry it took more than one reply, but it kept nagging at me that I’d read somewhere that Bonnie Prince Charlie had a daughter and she had three children.
Miss Bianca
@Iowa Old Lady:
Adrian McKinty is pretty good. I read the first one in that series. (Belfast and the Troubles being a pet obession and writing project of mine own).
Damn…there are too many good books out there now! Isn’t Vicky Delany an author in our midst? I noticed that our library catalog had her newest on the front page, so I’ve got it, “Cordelia’s Honor” (remember, I blame *you* for my new LMB jones), “These Old Shades”, and finishing up a really cool, strange one called “The Wolf Border” (British writer, fiction about a wolf re-introduction project in England).
raven
@Adam L Silverman: It’s going to be tough to enforce but it suits me.

Bullets looks like a great novel. Quite intriguing and timely given all the police shootings we have now.

@Adam L Silverman: Thanks in advance. I’m way behind in my fix citations reading; I’ll try to get caught up before this evening’s dose.
I only saw a snippet (“I know that they stopped and put their hands and heads out the windows to show that they were unarmed” and to tell them there were women in the vehicle). Emphasis mine. Link
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Not my problem anymore. Having to help moderate comments there was never fun.
Miss Bianca
@Mnemosyne:
I’m going to be doing a Scrivener tutorial in my writing group next time…taking one, I mean. There’s also a free, web-based program that’s similar called TrueNovelist, that I’m going to look into.
Keep plugging with the writing – your premise sounds intriguing!
Just One More Canuck
@Adam L Silverman: You’ve referenced the “Bundy Bunch” a couple of times (at least I think it was you) – I keep reading that as the Brady Bunch, which I assume is deliberate by you. I get these visions of a cross between the Brady Bunch and Mad Max
MomSense
I made a banana mango smoothie that was delicious. I also took a long walk at lunch without a coat!
It was about 55 today and sunny.
Adam L Silverman
@Just One More Canuck: Its like the Brady Bunch you’re not you when you’re hungry snickers commercial…

@Adam L Silverman: Just figured I’d let you know.

Through Wikipedia, I was able to determine that the dates will work out almost perfectly — the son survived (well into old age, in fact) and since his heritage was an open secret, he spent most of his young adulthood well away from the Napoleonic Wars, including time in the US and Canada. That persistent Stuart problem with fertility, though — he married a couple of times but never fathered any legitimate children, so the current claimant is through one of the sisters. (Not that he actually wants the throne — he seems perfectly content just to have his ancestry publicly known.)
Now I get to fiddle around with the facts to make it plausible that my character would be mistaken for the heir by the villain, which is the fun part!

It’s impressive how many authors hang around here. I’m one, too. My published work is non-fiction, from quite a while ago. Now I have a mystery, in search of a publisher. Y’all will be notified should it become available.

@Thoroughly Pizzled:
Some investment. So, J.J. Watt continues being this generation’s Barry Sanders?
Mnemosyne
@Miss Bianca:
Scrivener is *very* cool and I think it’s going to let me write out of order. That’s good, because part of my problem in the past is that I would lose steam halfway through (thanks, ADHD!) This way, I’ll be able to jump around as needed and then edit it as a single document at the end.
Still, the tutorial is a slog. I brought my laptop to work so I could get through a bit more of it while my brain is fresh and medicated instead of trying to do it at night when I’m tired and having trouble focusing.

I hate online tutorials. That’s why I’m psyched one of the authors who uses it is going to do an in-person!

@Mnemosyne: If I may be pedantic for a moment, or for a lifetime, just to be clear you are posting about your book under the “open thread” proviso and not under “authors in our midst” since your book is unfinished as of yet? I can’t articulate the reasons, but I feel that this distinction is important somehow.

For sci-fi fans, if you haven’t read the Hugo award winning “Three Body Problem”, drop everything you are doing, including small children and fine China, and get your paws on a copy of it.
It’s the first in a complete trilogy, and the second is even better than the first.
The third is due out in August (it’s been released in China, and the English translation is available then.)
Just an amazing story. Can’t recommend highly enough.

I like this kind of novel, crime thriller, tough guys.
Free is a great price, BUT, I can’t use it. I don’t do Amazon, and Amazon doesn’t do anything to help me. I use Ubuntu Linux, and Amazon does not. I can’t even tell how to download the file from the Amazon link. I’ve clicked on everything that acts like a link, and did manage to read the sample part of the book, which was pretty good, but that was the end.
Any chance Defiant Press supports downloads? Nah, they don’t even confess to knowing anything about “Bullets” in a search.
Darn!
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@LAO: No defense required, and I assumed it had something to do with a resolution eliminating a week or two of trial prep.

@Roger Moore: Oh, right, I forgot, that too :-)
LAO
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): did the prep but eliminated a week long trial. Considering, I got involved as a favor, I should be happy but ever since I gave up trial work, I find myself occasionally missing it.
TaMara (BHF)
@Mnemosyne: I took one look at Scrivner and said forget it. I had most of my stuff broken down into word docs anyway. If I had more room, I’d have a clothesline up and a physical timeline with note cards hung from it. LOL
TaMara (BHF)
@Mnemosyne: This is actually what I envisioned when I started this – kind of a published, unpublished and in progress discussions.
Plus favorite books. ;-)
Mnemosyne
@TaMara (BHF):
I have had way too many Word docs suddenly get corrupted and go sideways on me to trust it anymore, particularly with a long project (this will probably be 100K or 150K words at least). I’ve always wanted Scrivener, so I decided to treat myself.
It was really the organizing features that sold me — I can put a placeholder in where a chapter will go and write out of order. The very idea is already making my disorganized brain happy.
And PG Wodehouse used to pin each page of his short stories to the wall to edit them, so you have precedent!

My understanding is that they can’t charge the four year old as he was standing his ground.
More seriously this woman is in for a world of hurt. Apparently the four year old wasn’t in a booster seat, which is required in Florida by law. And it is unclear if there was even a booster seat in the truck based on the reporting I’ve seen. Unfortunately the kid is in for a prolonged exposure to Florida’s Department of Children and Families (what we used to call Child Protective Services). They are notoriously terrible as a result of constant budget cut induced shortfalls leading to far too many cases for far too few case workers.

Some of the reviews mention that it’s a slog, and that the science is iffy for what is supposed to be hard sci-fi, which would be especially annoying since if I’m going to read through plot science, they should either get the science right or just skip straight to technobabble.

You have to have an account with them to download even a freebee. I’m just not willing to go there ever since they admitted to having a bunch of fatalities in fulfillment warehouses. Not to mention putting lost of small stores out of business, much as Walmart did a few years ago.
I deal with Tor and Baen online, and a local bookseller when I have an ISBN they can order.
Adam L Silverman
@srv: Of course they would, who wouldn’t? As a former New Mexican, as well as someone who loves a good detective story, I thought he did a good job with both aspects. But then it’s no fucking protection.

@MomSense: Now that’s a good, sound, idea! Only been there once, but it was sweet! October was wonderful, as we traveled from Basque country over to Toulouse. Also, Amazon is actually helping a LOT of small speciality stores… because they can now sell their goods thru amazon around the country. far from putting stores out of business (and this includes used book stores) they’ve given a lot of stores new retail outlets. And B and N put a lot of those stores out of business. ..

I think safety problems are an inherent problem with the carry at all times people. It’s obviously possible to carry a loaded gun safely, but it requires thought and effort, while a major goal of the carry at all times movement is to minimize the thought people have to put into carrying their guns. You simply can’t have both of those things.

@daveNYC: I’m still trying to figure out what the appeal of Three Body Problem is. I think I made it about halfway through before giving up when I was doing my Hugo reading last year.
I dug into spoilered discussions after giving up, trying to motivate myself to push through despite the Eight Deadly Words, and I don’t think even my tolerance for technobabble would have gotten me through it.

My nominating reading is becoming a slog. I’ve never been a fan of short forms in the first place (one reason I haven’t nominated in the past), and they’re all starting to run together. I think I need a Bujold break.
Roger Moore
@Adam L Silverman:
Technically, yes, but you also need to be able to maintain the mindset that the gun is dangerous and needs to be treated with proper respect. The problem is that that the “guns everywhere” crowd are quite deliberately trying to break down the perception that guns are dangerous and need to be treated that way. They want carrying a gun to be as normal as carrying a cell phone, and that erodes the required attitude.
