Visited a French friend/colleague in Paris in the mid-2000s (we’d worked together in the US but she returned to France not long after GWB got elected) and she had a gathering in my honor. After a few glasses of wine (and some beers) her friends let me know what they really thought of George W. Bush. I mean they got heated, like I was personally responsible for his election. Reaching the limits of my French, I stammered in English “I’m Nigerian, I only have a green card, I’m not a citizen, I didn’t vote for the man.” One of them looked me over and said – “You sound American, you’ve lived there for over 15 years, what the hell are you waiting for?” I guess that was as good a motivation to become a citizen as any.

@mclaren: I believe you’re referring to a Yugo. I love this comment on it.
Built in Soviet-bloc Yugoslavia, the Yugo had the distinct feeling of something assembled at gunpoint. Interestingly, in a car where “carpet” was listed as a standard feature, the Yugo had a rear-window defroster — reportedly to keep your hands warm while you pushed it.
Well, that’s awful for you. In addition to the other advice, I would suggest that you get some individual counseling before you agree to couples counseling to get your own head sorted out before you try and get the relationship straightened out (and, of course, to make sure you want to straighten it out).

122.
snarkyspice
@Cain, so sorry – but don’t kick yourself about the feeling of empathy. Easy comments like ‘cheaters suck’ do nothing to solve the real issues. The truth is cheaters are human beings doing their best to cope with their needs (usually emotional not physical). Their best in this case is utterly inadequate, messed up and hurtful to others, but it genuinely was the best they could do at the time. The empathy will help you fix this if it can be fixed.
I once took the same oath – then years later, realized I’d be much happier back home, so came back to the UK. I love it here now – being away gave me a real appreciation for my home – but I do wish I’d never taken that oath because I am now tied to filing complicated US tax returns every year for the rest of my life. It has already cost me thousands of pounds in accountant’s fees and I am not wealthy. The US is the only country in the world that taxes based on citizenship and not on residency. Fun fact!

This picture makes me proud to be an American. I’ll bet many conservatives just hate that an Arab-looking fellow on the left or a Latino on the right could actually join our family. And that is what makes them so unAmerican.
@Zinsky: Yes! The guy to my right (your left as you’re looking at the photo) is Iraqi. So is his mother, who stood to his right (not shown). She wore a headscarf with big shiny black pailettes, and they spoke in Arabic, in happy, excited tones. The guy to my left (your right) is from the Philippines. There were 70 of us being naturalized in Tampa yesterday. Seventy people from thirty different countries, including Brazil, Tonga, Venezuela, the UK, Canada, the Philippines, Iraq, and Norway. Every one of us–at least, every one I could see–filled in the form and registered to vote, too. :-)
@Calming Influence: Thank you for the warm welcome and the kind words! As for my hand signal, sadly, that’s just how my fingers sit these days, thanks to arthritis: the knuckles are swollen so my pinky finger sticks out at an angle unless I consciously try to force my fingers together and hold them there.

@Cain:
Well, that’s awful for you. In addition to the other advice, I would suggest that you get some individual counseling before you agree to couples counseling to get your own head sorted out before you try and get the relationship straightened out (and, of course, to make sure you want to straighten it out).

Congratulations! It’s a step I still haven’t taken, so good on you.

I’d say welcome you LitBrit but how can we be sure you aren’t one of those educated ISIS sleeper agents that Marco Rubio has warned us about?

@Davebo: Was that Jugo quote from P. J. O’Rourke’s long-ago
article about touring the Yugo factory?

Congrats to the new American citizen, LitBrit (whichever she is).

Yay! My wife became a citizen about four years ago. Congratulations!

@Cain: Oddly, what Just Some said is true, but it doesn’t make it easier. It’s a gut kick even when you’ve wondered if you might want to end the relationship. It’s hell when it’s a surprise. Cheaters suck. Take care of yourself.

Fun fact!

@GregB: Exactly, how can we be sure she’s not a Mooslim infiltrator come here to poison us with Sheperd’s pie, and not quite cold beer?

@Cain:
Good that you have a coast to go to….those ocean waves are elemental and synchronous with deep feelings and can be cathartic…wishing you healing and the best possible resolution to your situation.

This picture makes me proud to be an American. I’ll bet many conservatives just hate that an Arab-looking fellow on the left or a Latino on the right could actually join our family. And that is what makes them so unAmerican.

Congrats LitBrit!

@Felixmoronia: Thank you!
