Why should the other bigots have all the fun? In case Sarah “Bible Spice” Palin’s endorsement wasn’t enough to make it official, the Grey Lady lifted her soiled skirts and stepped into the morass, to explain how “Evangelicals See Donald Trump as Man of Conviction, if Not Faith”:
… Brash, thrice-married, cosseted in a gilded tower high above Fifth Avenue and fond of swearing from the stage at his rallies, Mr. Trump, who has spent his career in pursuit, and praise, of wealth, would seem an odd fit for voters who place greater value on faith, hope and charity.
Yet polls increasingly show Mr. Trump well in front of the crowded Republican field among white evangelical voters, despite competition including Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, whose father is an evangelical pastor; Mr. Huckabee, the 2008 Iowa caucus winner; former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, a Roman Catholic whose story of raising a daughter with a disability struck a chord with voters and helped push him to victory in the 2012 Iowa caucuses; and Ben Carson, a Seventh-day Adventist who brought prayer into the operating room as a neurosurgeon and has spoken frequently about his Christian beliefs as a candidate.
A New York Times/CBS News poll last week showed Mr. Trump, a Presbyterian, dominating the field with 42 percent of evangelical voters; Mr. Cruz was second with 25 percent.
In dozens of interviews with evangelical voters in 16 states, from every region of the country outside the Northeast, those supporting Mr. Trump sounded a familiar refrain: that his heart was in the right place, that his intentions for the country were pure, that he alone was capable of delivering to a troubled country salvation in the here and now…
And on Monday, Mr. Trump spoke at Liberty University, the Lynchburg, Va., institution founded by the late Rev. Jerry Falwell. Mr. Trump has been wooing Jerry Falwell Jr., and Mr. Falwell lavished praise on him, comparing Mr. Trump to Jesus and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for voicing unpopular thoughts…
Rev. Hucksterbee and Rick Sanctorum — let’s face it! — are luzers, and nobody likes that guy Cruz. Their god is a strong god, a winning god, one never hesitant to rain down destruction or crush another horde of unbelievers. Their god is YOOOOOGE.
And the Trumpenfuhrer is ready to lead them to glory, per NYMag:
… “Christianity, it’s under siege,” the GOP front-runner said at the Evangelical college’s morning convocation. “We don’t band together. Other religions, frankly, they’re banding together … we have to unify. We have to band together, we have to do really, in a really large version, what they’ve done at Liberty.”…
The mogul further argued that “the Bible is the best,” though he had some difficulty in trying to quote it.
“Two Corinthians 3:17, that’s the whole ballgame. ‘Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,’” Trump said, inspiring chuckles from an audience that knows that chapter of Scripture by its god-given name of “Second Corinthians.”…
“In my opinion, Mr. Trump lives a life of loving and helping others … as Jesus taught in the New Testament,” Falwell said on Monday…
Second-gen religious hustler knows: Hustler Trump got serious game.
Our own Siubhan Duinne linked to Daniel Danger‘s amazing Storify post, “I went to a Donald Trump rally and saw a man wearing a plastic bag as a shirt”:
… I picked seats on the floor, partially to commit to simply being a bit more “in the shit”. I chose an aisle seat that had a clear open line of sight to the podium, and also offered a moderate amount of “phone privacy” by having an empty space to my right. Which turned out to be useful because the people behind me were actively trying to read my phone all night…
They are handing out signs that say "The Silent Majority Supports Trump", and 'Eye of the Tiger' is BLARING
— Daniel Danger (@tinymediaempire) January 4, 2016
I missed who the speaker was, but he went on a whole bit about how there were Democrats hiding in the audience, and they probably wouldn’t/shouldn’t identify themselves due to “past incidents”, and because they were basically outnumbered in the room. And this was said in a joking manner to get a laugh from the room. Perhaps “past incidents” referred to Trump supporters beating and kicking a Latino man at a rally in Miami, The Black Lives Matter protester kicked and beaten at a Trump rally in Alabama, or the Trump supporters beating and peeing on a homeless Latino man because “Donald Trump was right.”…
I snuck into the reserved VIP section, where trash bag man is. Trump declares he "has the smartest audience" pic.twitter.com/LCobRvJQZf
— Daniel Danger (@tinymediaempire) January 5, 2016
By this point, a good number of Non-Trumpsucklers had been removed from the room. Some were protestors who shouted out or held signs and drew attention to themselves, and others were simply people who the mob had identified as an outsider and became aggressive towards. I saw many bursts of shouting people pop up in the stands surrounding a person who was sitting down just existing. Police didnt ask any questions, they just escorted people out. It quickly became a gleeful game to the room: find the democrat, yell at them, police intervene, everyone cheers. Trump declared this “Fun”, specifically more fun than talking about politics.
This was also the moment where I realized I was the subject of a witch hunt. I was quiet, I wasnt applauding racist bullshit, I wasnt cheering when Immigrant Rights protestors were hauled away. So I had put a giant red flag up by my non-participation. I was listening and taking notes on my phone, occasionally leaning over to my friend to clarify things. But this made the people around me suspicious, and people dont like when they see someone forming an outside line that might communicate the happenings within their little safe space to the outside world…
You could have dragged a minority into that room and thrown a baseball bat on the ground and a fucking line would have formed.

As Fred Clark has spent much time telling us, most self-identified Evangelical Christians are racists. That’s the foundation of most of their denominations, which split off before the Civil War.
So, no, I’m not at all surprised that those voters would pick Trump, the most openly racist candidate, over the candidates who ostensibly share the same religious beliefs. Their true belief is in racism, not Jesus.

Coming from the northeast, I could never figure out why evangelicals go on so much about how much disdain and derision they suffer from coastal elites. I mean, as a relatively secular coastal elitist, one does not waste time openly ridiculing religious people. One just ignores them as they are not part of any interesting conversations.
But the complaints from that quarter are so persistant and so embedded in the way evangelicals think about themselves, regardless of the evidence, that something else is going on. At a basic level these communities are aware that the perfect Bible is riddled with self-refuting inconsistencies that make a mockery of standard fundamentalist readings and interpretations. That they know that most of their fellow believers are motivated by racism and classism, that their preachers are grifters, that what passes for spirituality is just superstition and magical thinking, and that the business of evangelical religion is riddled with cynicism.
So, given with the conflict between what they they know (but can not admit) and they believe, they project these criticism onto others and then repeatedly denounce these others in the course of public announcements. They are not talking to or about anyone else, just to and about their own collective subconscious which is all too aware the entire edifice is rotten bullshit.

In part, because one of the core themes of Evangelical Christianity, second only to belief in salvation brought to sinners by Jesus Christ, is that true Christianity is a persecuted religion, including here in the US, its believers mocked and disdained by token Christians and secularists alike.
This belief is unshakably protected by epistemic closure against even such obvious evidence as the obviously numerous churches lining the streets of most American cities at frequent intervals, and the fact that Evangelical colleges like Liberty University stay open, unchallenged by any government.

The old man told him not to waste his money, but the soon to be attorney wouldn’t listen and bought it anyway. I was home for Christmas that year and he’d had the car for 5 months. The headliner was duct taped to the window moldings so it wouldn’t hang down on the fine Corinthian leather. The car ran ok but the interior ate itself alive. Corporate Democrats advocate endless unwinnable foreign wars with limitless growth of corporation power at home, slow erosion of the social safety net and repeal of any regulations which impinge on the corporations’ Jabba-the-Hut-like appetite for destruction of everyone and everything that can be converted into hard cash. Republicans are the same, just slightly more so. DINOs like Hillary want to bomb Iran, RINOs like Cruz want to bomb every country in the middle east. DINOs like Hillary propose not requiring a federal increase in the minimum wage (“I think we should let states handle that”) while RINOs like Trump want to abolish the minimum wage. The Trumpenfuhrer is whipping up the resentment, anger and hostility of the crowds and securing the conservative Christian support and his campaign people are making ties with the heavily armed “militia” meathead insurgents*. Not a good sign. This has an odd historical ring.
Makes me nervous to think that thanks to movement conservatives, Republicans and the NRA there is a right wing shadow army ready for a leader….a fuhrer to unleash greatness on America.
*as goofy as they may seem they are well armed and angry thugs.

You could probaly just dub this over tRump’s speech:
Are there any queers in the theater tonight? Get ’em up against the wall

Trump’s rallys. You know what they are reminding me of more and more? Well it harkens back to a political movement from the last century. Where rally’s contained much the same pointing out the enemies within and thugishly tossing opponents aside. It reminds me of Sainted Molly Ivins where she once retorted:
“It probably sounded better in the original German”. God how we could use that woman now.

@NorthLeft12:
I don’t think they care about faith so much as they care about identity. Faith is just a tribal marker that identifies the in-group. All the more important now that the other big identity marker, race, is no longer as acceptable to mention in public.

@J R in WV: For us it was an Oldsmobile. My mom had been driving a late ’60s Cutlass that was, by the standards of the time, a great, reliable car, but decided to trade it in just because it was starting to get on in years. She went to get what she thought was the closest available equivalent, a late ’70s Oldsmobile Omega (basically the same car as the Chevy Nova of the time, with a different nameplate).
The thing just started disintegrating almost immediately. Parts had a tendency to come off in your hand. The engine had a habit of dying in the middle of the street after you started it and drove about a block, but it’d also keep dieseling and making the car hop up and down for about a minute after you stopped driving it.
After that she switched to driving a succession of Volvo 240 DLs and never looked back.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
Boy that Daniel Danger excerpt is a little terrifying. These people are deranged and violent, and both things are being encouraged. When is the last time in either political party that these kinds of things happened at rallies for a major party political candidate? Like. just pre Civil War in the South? Maybe during the labor movement of the early 20th century? I mean, throwing out disruptive protesters is one thing, but to single out people who aren’t being disruptive but just look too brown or aren’t being enthusiastic enough in their support – that’s phenomenon I don’t think has existed in American politics for nearly a century or more.

@AWJ: Anime? So hentai is too risque for them? And, one supposes, real porn is quite beyond the pale.

@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?: George Allen’s “macaca” remark was basically that kind of thing. It was aimed at a brown-skinned non-supporter who was going around videoing his appearances. But that did in his campaign, partly because he had actually used a racial slur.
I’m sure that if someone not-white had actually dared to show up at, say, one of Theodore Bilbo’s rallies, worse things would have happened.
