My guess is this will be a high-scoring game with Alabama winning in a squeaker. Clemson has a great team. But ‘Bama has a near-NFL caliber defense AND Derrick Henry. That means it’s rammer-jammer time.
What say you?

My sister is an alum, so LET’S GO TIGERS!
Also, fuck Saban and fuck Bama.

I say that the second half of the Gophers’ season began over the weekend, with 3-1 and 9-0 wins over Ohio State. I don’t expect the next two weeks to be any tougher, but at the end of the month we go to Bemidji State to ramp up the schedule.

My wife and I have three degrees between us from USC, so it goes without saying that I don’t want to see Clemson win.
I don’t like Alabama either, but unfortunately there’s no way both teams can lose. So roll, Tide. Hip hip.

Clemson’s last win over Alabama came on Oct. 25, 1905 — 40,255 days ago. On that date:
Theodore Roosevelt was president
Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states
Clemson was 12-years old (founded in 1893) and was an all-male military school known as Clemson Agricultural College
according to ESPN

Clemson’s win over Oklahoma surprised me. I thought that they were going to get waxed. So as an ACC alum, I guess that I want them to win, but I don’t think that they will.
Davebo
Rooting for Tigers but resigned to the fact that the once a mothers will probably win.

It’s the least expensive natty ticket in 10 years.
Stillwater
Clemson wins! (You heard it here first.)
It’s gonna come down to who makes the most big plays, avoiding penalties, the turnover battle of course, special teams, that good offense beats good defense, and that defense wins championships.
Oh, and halftime adjustments.
Go Tigers!

College football ends January 1st. Now you boys take yer ball and go home. And stay offa my lawn.

@Stillwater: NO, we heard it from Corso first.

Lady is showing a great deal of cleavage.
Mike J
I have friends from Auburn, so I have to go with Clemson.
raven
@Mike J: Both towns are about the same. . . nowheresville.
Betty Cracker
@JPL: Damn! Didn’t know that!

I would love it if Clemson wins, only because there is no way in hell they are going to win. Any day Alabama loses is a good day, I still remember the game when they beat Virginia Tech 77-6. Still hasn’t been properly avenged.
Stillwater
@raven: Damn, I thought I was the only one….

What kind of name is Swinney? His ancestors forgot how to spell Sweeney or they actually mated with swine?
I will never understand the South.

Bama 3? to Clemson 1?. Although I did not see Clemson play, I did see Alabama shut down LSU. And, though I’m a GA fan living in GAINESVILLE, FL, I always go for the SEC team if they are playing against another conference.
BTW, if you don’t have ESPN, you can watch it online. Go to ESPN website, click “watch”, scroll down to CFP Spydercam” and stream. No commentary, only crowd and ref sound. Always behind the offense (vid) but great way to watch the game.
Betty Cracker
@Eric U.: I don’t discount Clemson’s chances to that degree. They’re a great team. Should be a good, close game. We’ll see!
raven
@Eric U.: I was at the Hokie National Championship game in the Big Easy.
raven
@Stillwater: He was pretty funny, 0-5 picking Clemson and Bama this year!
Mike J
@raven: They’re actually from an even more nowhere town, but went to the Uni there.
raven
@Mike J: Auburn’s Vet Med did a good job treating my Raven’s cancer.
Villago Delenda Est
There’s no way both teams can be swallowed up by the ground, is there?

@Villago Delenda Est: It happened in the last Batman movie

Deshaun is from Gainesville, GA which the dopey announcers last week noted was about 10 miles from Athens!

How many Tigers in the SEC? Mizzou, Auburn, LSU, Clemson….did I miss any?
Betty Cracker
? Beautiful throw and catch!

@Punchy: Clemson is in the ACC. But there are two Bulldogs.

There are tooo many commercials…
Mr Stagger Lee
@JPL: Also Clemson was a personal pet project of Senator Benjamin(Pitchfork Ben) Tillman perhaps one of the most notorious racists in US congressional history, Not that Alabama was any better. However for the sake of humanity, HOLD THAT TIGER! GO Clemson.
Punchy
@raven: Dammit, I should have recognized that mistake. Grumble.
JPL
@Mr Stagger Lee: From what I heard, Clemson is going to recognize there past. Warts and all.. Pretty big warts. .
raven
@Punchy: Well, they are an hour from Athens and and hour and a half from Columbia.
Corner Stone
Welp, I guess we know where Wes Welker slunk off to.
Punchy
Damn, Clemson took that Henry punch in the mouth and responded with 3 jabs and an uppercut. No Bama intimidation evident.
themann1086
@JPL: Clemson was founded in 1889 and their football team in 1896. Not sure where 1893 came from…
Cacti
Not strongly for Clemson, but can’t stand Nick Saban, so, go Clemson!
Also too, no college defense is near NFL caliber.
Betty Cracker
Clemson’s defense has been damn impressive!
ETA: Whoops — turnover time!

Kirby’s D comes through. He’ll be a Dawg in abut 2 hours!

Too bad this is a Red State National Championship, which kind of blows.
raven
@Zinsky: Whatever.

My brother’s dog predicts Alabama, unfortunately. She’s been 100% in the last few weeks. She picked the red dog treat over the orange one yesterday……
geg6
Well, the only matchup I think of that I could possibly care less about would be if Duke and Notre Dame were playing. Well, perhaps if it was Ohio State playing pretty much anyone. Is anyone above the Mason Dixon line even watching college football any more (with the exception of the aforementioned OSU)? Seems like it’s only ever southern schools these days. But I quit watching NCAA football a decade ago, at least. So I may have just not been paying attention. I find no joy in it any more.
raven
@geg6: But you find joy in letting us know that huh?
BillinGlendaleCA
@geg6: The last of my favorite teams played New Year’s Eve(anyone playing U$C, Wisconsin). I went hiking New Year’s Day and could see the blimp over the Rose Bowl during the game.
raven
Well, I’ll have to DVR the second half and watch it in the morning
!
Cacti
@Zinsky:
Meh.
The real playoffs started this weekend. College football’s pretensions of having their own Super Bowl just look extra futile in comparison.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
Two of my coworkers including my boss are there. Clemson grads. Wednesday will be a very long day for either them or me. Not to mention numerous Clemson fans here at the job. I hold the fort alone.

@raven: You’re getting a good one.
Schlemazel
@JPL:
Just got a note from ESPN, Quote
SHUT YER PIE HOLE! We lost a fortune on the playoff games & have to try to make it back. Unquote
Seriously, they need to expand to 12 teams and play like the NFL, with the play-in games after Christmas and then the playoffs in January with the championship decided the week before the Stuper Bowel. THEN ESPN and the NC$$ could haul in the loot. The player? Ah, screw them.
Betty Cracker
That was the longest run for a four-yard gain I’ve seen all year.
Betty Cracker
That was a crappy kick.
Schlemazel
@efgoldman:
I assume that was the geniuses of the NCAA thinking they would have the night to themselves. They sure do because no one else wants it. The only people stupider was ESPN who paid something like $600million to show the games to nobody.
ThresherK
Okay, what the hell happened that Clemson had to take their last effing time out to remind the idiot officials to stop the clock after the first down? Cost them a chance for another 10 yards for a better FG attempt.
Are they trying to make this weekend’s NFL officiating look good?
Betty Cracker
@ThresherK: Yeah. Definitely got robbed of that T/O.
themann1086
@Betty Cracker: ok, so it wasn’t just us? I’m at a Clemson alumni game watch so the crowd is a bit biased, but we were all screaming at the teevees.
Stillwater
@ThresherK: It was a weird situation. Watching live, it looked like the whistle blew with 14 seconds left and the clock guy ran it down to 12, then paused it for about a second, then let er rip. Clock guy is obvs an Alabama mole.
ThresherK
@Betty Cracker: Does Clemson get to throw a challenge flag for that? And if so will they fix the rule for next year?
Betty Cracker
@ThresherK: I don’t know.
M. Bouffant
Alabama & South Carolina teams? What the hell? More like the Confederate Championship. All the Coast is rooting for injuries.

@efgoldman:
I do seem to recall at least one Sugar Bowl played on New Year’s Eve in the first half of the ’70s. ND-Bama ring a bell?
ETA: There were four of them, 1972-1975. ND won the national championship after beating Bama in the ’73 game.

Wow, great defensive stand from Clemson there. Helluva game!

Drake with the kickoff return for TD. Awesome runback.
Betty Cracker
Wow. Thought Clemson was gonna stop him in the backfield.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
And that’s a wrap.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)

Great game. Clemson played their asses off.
Betty Cracker
Saban is such a joyless bastard. Helluva coach, though.

Fuck alabama and their ref cockolds
+10
ETA no disrespect to actual cuckolds. You do you!
ET
Bama alum here……Roll Tide!
I knew the game was going to be a slog. A lot of people were picking Bama to dominate because they did respect the ACC (too much SEC arrogance), but Clemson didn’t go undefeated and have a Heisman finalist without being an opponent to respect.
Flukebucket
Damn. You are pretty good at this. Clemson played their asses off and never, ever quit. That was admirable. They did make it a much better and closer game than I expected it to be. Alabama is just a machine.
Jack
Good call, Betty!
gratuitous
Pretty good game. I have to say, though, that Stanford could have given either team a better game. How did Clemson go undefeated without benefit of being able to cover the deep ball? Their special teams weren’t all that special, either.
