Jesus. I don’t even know what “lack of political pretense” means, but Bloomberg rejects the political class? Since fucking when? That’s some embarrassing shit.

That could just mean that you’ve enjoyed a fine meal this evening, have had a thoughtful conversation with Steve and young Mr. Howl while Lily and Rosie have listened approvingly to every word, and now are ready for a restful, refreshing sleep. …. Or it could mean that you are a grumpy old fart who is up past his bedtime.

There is the Guatemala elections to talk about!
Tossed the incumbent Pres and VP out on their asses prior to the election, and now a TV comic is in the lead, ready for the runoffs.
They managed to not ‘look back in regret’, and the old pres is awaiting trial.

Sorry to hear about your buddy. The after affects of war can not only go on for ever, the hit can be years later and just as hard as the original trauma. Please take a moment and reflect to look inside and see if there is a need to get help, for you or Shawn. Some times the triggers are hidden and only exposed when you least expect it or are reminded.

They say evrything can be replaced,
Yet every distance is not near.
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here.
I see my light come shining
From the west onto the east.
Any day now, any day how,
I shall be released.
They say every man needs protection,
They say every man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.
I see my light come shining
From the west onto the east.
Any day now, any day how,
I shall be released.

Any day now, any day how,
I shall be released.

So sorry to hear about Savage.
It should be a national emergency. There should be more study, more real help. All too often, they are sent off with medication. No real support. No integrated way to make sure they are sheltered and fed and valued.
And PTSD concerns us all. Not just our friends in the Services, but victims of crime and bad parenting and auto accidents. This can touch anyone.
We all need some help some time.

John: So sorry about your friend.
I’m glad you and Shawn have more of a support system, perhaps, something to keep you grounded and here and laughing at absurdities. Thurston is a commitment, as are the Bethany frat guys.
Very sad that your friend could not see beyond the void. At least, on his last day.
As a society, we could help do something about that. But — oh look: Trump!
Think CNN and others have done some well-meaning docs on PTSD, but unless you’re living with it or a friend or loved one with it, you don’t and won’t get it, and most of us have chosen to absent ourselves from that world.
We could do a lot more to provide opportunities and follow up care for vets. Wish we loved them as much as some love their guns.
satby
Sorry to hear that John. PTSD is a bitch. Wish he could have pushed through and gotten to a place of peace while he was alive. Condolences to you and Shawn, and all his Army buddies and family.
This always hits a bit close. One of my adopted sons has it from his 5 combat tours in W’s not so glorious war.

My sympathies for yourself and his friends, Mr. Cole. I am sorry to say that we don’t ever weigh the costs that there will be for men and women who serve, before we start one of these goddamn wars. And we try as hard as we can not to think much about them during. or after they are over, either.

@Sourmash: There probably was the same reason there is for most suicides: unrelenting depression. There are better anti-depressants available today than 35 years ago when I was at my low point, but still, they don’t help everyone. And, of course, there are those who never go for or receive help.
My condolences to all of Savage’s friends and those who loved him. May he find the peace he was seeking.

@srv: Wolff:
‘Shared’ by whom?
I’ve heard this bit about Bill and Hillary’s ‘naked ambition’ before, but it still boggles my mind. You look at the world of politics, or the corporate world, or any other world where there are big rewards for success, and you’ll find a metric ton of people who are as ambitious as Bill and Hillary Clinton – and usually more naked and cutthroat about it. How exactly do the Clintons stand out in this respect?
And other equally ambitious people usually have little if any desire to benefit anyone else by their climb to the top. Bill Clinton tried to get us universal healthcare, and succeeded in at least getting a lot of kids covered via SCHIP. What do most ambitious people do for others that’s so great?
Gimme the Clintons any day.
WaterGirl
@low-tech cyclist: The death toll from war should be revised upwards periodically, just like the jobs report is.

Medical marijuana to treat PTSD should be available at every single VA clinic and hospital in this country and delivered to each Veteran, in person or through the mail, if necessary. Period. End of story.
