Somehow or another I have done something to my desktop pc so that the keyboard is no longer recognizing the bottom row of keys. I have no idea if I somehow remapped everything, so I am now just doing a system recovery, which apparently takes eleventy fucking years to do.

So then, very similar to page-loading time here recently.

History indicates that I am a clumsy accident prone walking disaster area. But Cole manages to stay a few steps ahead of me. Maybe that is why I like this blog.

Did you try simply shutting down and restarting the system (i.e.not just a soft restart) before resorting to system restore? The top row (numbers, symbols) on my daughter’s laptop KB began misbehaving – producing random letter output, and before going to system restore or replacing the KB (which BTW is much cheaper and simpler on a desktop than a laptop) – I tried doing a complete (hard) shutdown of the system, and that cured whatever random glitch was causing the misbehavior on the KB.
YMMV whether this will work in your case – but it’s worth a try.
Amir Khalid
Did you try plugging in a spare keyboard?

@Amir Khalid:
I concur that is also an option you should try – I had a desktop KB go bad on me (it would intermittently freeze and refuse to communicate with the motherboard) – and swapping in a replacement (which has worked flawlessly for weeks now) proved the flaw was with the KB.
lamh36
Could always be worse.
Just started watching this damn Anderson Cooper Katrina special on CNN right now and I’m already misty-eyed!!!
JPL
Rachel is doing a recap of the failures of Katrina. Michael Brown wrote a whiny recap on the failures in Politico and didn’t include himself in those failures. In fact the worse thing during that time, to him, was that he was blamed. Not any mention of the deaths or those trapped for days without food and water.
Baud
Why don’t you buy a new computer with the money you’re saving on your WordPress programmer?
JPL
@lamh36: I can stream MSNBC International but not haven’t found a way to stream CNN. Having an antenna does have limitations.
Halcyon
Try replacing/reinstalling the driver, especially if it’s some sort of gaming keyboard with extra keys or something?
lamh36
@JPL: yeah…I chose to watch the Cooper doc rather than Rachel…I already heard it all about the failure during Katrina, so I have no need or want to hear it again.

They tryin to wash us away.

At least the site doesn’t load anyway. You picked the right week to stop
sniffing gluetyping.Keith G
@cmorenc: @Amir Khalid: Yeah, my first thought was try a different keyboard. Then again , I use wireless keyboards and mice so I always have the originals stashed somewhere.
raven
@JPL: All you have to do is go to their website.

Aren’t computers great? They go wrong in some random way, and a dozen diagnostic techniques can be suggested, each as plausible as the last.

Obviously it’s an ID10T interface issue.
Unplug your computer and step away.

Wow, that sucks. You can’t even type most of the good curse words. Damn that letter C. Hey, at least you can still type tits. Oh, but not Trump. Damn.

That sure sounds like a busted keyboard. Don’t waste time mucking with software until you’ve tried a substitute.

I remember seeing the pics/footage of the man’s body seen on top of the car. #Katrina10 #CNN Now we know his name.

@raven: Nope.. They check your internet provider and whether or not you have service. That only works if you have a cable/uverse tv provider.

Two keys on my laptop are loose because of kitteh, so I feel your pain.
FlyingToaster
@SiubhanDuinne: Oddly enough, I haven’t been having any problems.
Cable, Mac, Firefox, NoScript blocking nothing, Ghostery blocking Doubleclick, Google Adsense, Lockerz Share.
I block Doubleclick because they’re evil, Google Adsense because it hangs Firefox/Macc, and Lockerz Share because it slows down every damn site it’s on.
Mike J
@FlyingToaster: I’m blocking all of those with noscript, and loading time sucks.

Kinda like using a flamethrower on a mosquito, except that the flamethrower will probably solve your initial problem.

It has many other channels as well.

So it’s quicker than this site? Does Hillary Clinton shop for her pant suits at Chairman Mao R Us?

If it’s any consolation I spent the ENTIRE DAY yesterday trying in vain to get GarageBand to recognize my Mbox so I could record something for a video project. Still no luck.

I haven’t had an issue loading the mobile site on my android phone. Amazingly, since it’s usually klunky when no one else has issues.

I second trying another keyboard. If it is a wireless keyboard, make sure there is nothing causing interference. When I had a wireless keyboard/mouse if my cell got to close to the receiver weird things would happen.
PaulW
for future reference, you might want to check if your local library system employs a tech support person to help patrons with computer issues, or else gets volunteer teens from the high school to come in certain afternoons to help.
Also, it could have easily been a faulty USB connection or run-down batteries on a wireless keyboard.

Going to be in the PNW in September. Hiking and camping a lot, but will be around sea the nights of 9/21 and 10/2, and in PDX 9/30 and 10/1 if anybody is up for a gathering.
John@top; did you spill the mustard on it?

It was one of the animals. They are laughing at you John.

It could be a hardware issue. My 14 month old TOSHIBA laptop keyboard all of a sudden declined to let me use the middle top and second row of keys. It is now functioning as the grandkids minecraft machine using an external keyboard.

@wasabi gasp: This is to me? I can do that but am having no problems with any other sites. Maybe I’ll just clear BJs cookies.

Well there’s your problem right there. If you were using a Mac, this wouldn’t happen.

@mtiffany: I’m here to tell you this never happens with a Mac product. Because I’m a douche.

Put the keyboard in the dishwasher on the top rack, no soap. Run it through a cycle, but turn off the drying part because the heat will cook it to oblivion.
Shake it out and let it sit out for about a week to dry. After a week, plug it in again.
Aleta
Sounds like just keyboard fail. Happened here (Mac though) a few months ago. Climate change (Zone 4-5).
Bruce K
Possible diagnostics:
– Unplug the keyboard from its current port and plug it into a new port (assuming it’s USB). If it’s a wireless, plug the receiver into a different port.
– As mentioned above, if you have another keyboard knocking around somewhere, try that, or maybe procure a cheap USB keyboards (pretty sure you can get one for ten bucks, and it’s always better to have a backup and not need it than vice versa).
– If your keyboard has customization software, try uninstalling it, rebooting, and then reinstalling.
Losing one row of keys seems consistent with a failure of hardware instead of software. Thankfully, we’re not in the days of the Apple II or the Commodore 64 where the keyboard was an integral part of the computer.

@SiubhanDuinne:
wow. a friend of mine teaches there.

John,
This sounds more like a hardware failure. I cannot think of any way you could accidentally remap any row of keys. If this is a laptop, don’t even think about repair yourself (if you do, get a pic of the keyboard. get several. )
bill
Same thing happened to me when I spilled beer on my keyboard. Fix: new keyboard.
