In a speech in Cleveland (the Paris of Lake Erie) today, Hillary Clinton talked about women’s issues, comparing the views of backwards, Bible-humping, god-bothering, patriarchal fanatics in the GOP race with the views of anti-modern, Koran-thumping, god-bothering, patriarchal fanatics in terrorist groups:
“Now, extreme views about women, we expect that from some of the terrorist groups, we expect that from people who don’t want to live in the modern world, but it’s a little hard to take from Republicans who want to be the president of the United States, yet they espouse out of date, out of touch policies. They are dead wrong for 21st century America. We are going forward, we are not going back.”
Boom. She specifically name-checked Bush, Rubio and Kasich. Here’s Jeb Bush’s feeble meep in response:
.@HillaryClinton compares pro-life Americans to terrorists, but defends despicable PP treatment of unborn? Her priorities are totally wrong
— Jeb Bush (@JebBush) August 27, 2015
Haven’t seen anything from the other candidates yet, but I’m sure the media will point out how uncivil it was for HRC to make such a comparison and speculate that it must be to distract everyone from e-Ghazi. That’s easier than acknowledging that the self-same “mainstream” GOP candidates who are always crowing about personal liberty want to make women’s uteri state property. Hillary is right, and good on her for saying that which must not be spoken.

It’s an easy comparison to make when that’s how they act.

Hillary’s been pretty sharp lately, though it’s been overlooked in all the Trumpmania. After the first GOP debate, she tweeted that there really wasn’t much difference between Trump’s proposed policies and those of the rest of the field – something that the media tend to overlook.
Whoever the GOP nominee winds up being, she’s gonna make mincemeat of him.

@hells littlest angel: Just to be fair to Sanders, he has a standard segment of his stump speech devoted to reproductive rights for women, and I think to his credit, he does go right to a core issue: the ultimate goal is attack on contraception, and rights of women to have any control over their bodies.

First, no federal funds would pay for abortions. Second, no party may make a profit from selling tissues resulting from an abortion.” I.e., if they offered to “illegalize” the already-illegal things Republicans are pretending aren’t illegal. Would the GOP say “those aren’t concessions”, thereby publicly admitting this is the status quo and they’re full of crap about PP?

@Chuckles: I think best strategy is to tell the truth and call BS. As Truman put it: I never gave them hell, I just told the truth and they thought it was hell. They are lying and BSing on reproductive health, Planned Parenthood, they are dishonest about their goals, call them out on it.
Since these people believe in a personal God and don’t believe in evolution, maybe suggest that they ask Him how come He made it impossible to tell when conception occurs, and He designed the world so that between a quarter to a third of conceptions spontaneously abort or miscarry very early pregnancy. Why are they being so prideful and stiff necked in trying to fight against His Design.
After all, there is barely a word about abortion in the Bible, and fundie protestants did not particularly care about it as an issue until that religious movement was politicized in the 1970s and 1980s.
The whole issue is a lie from start to finish, with vicious partisan political motivations. I don’t think they really give a rat’s ass about kids in general, born or unborn. They care about controlling everything that they can, and women are a big part of that drive.

Were people simply in denial about what happens with an abortion? This whole ridiculous controversy hinges on the argument that PP is profiting off of fetal tissue donations, which is easily, provably wrong. Other than that, it seems like “pro life” people are simply once again talking about the procedure as if people out there were confused about what terminating a pregnancy actually involves.
Also, speaking of pro life:

I think the only place in the Bible where abortion is mentioned, is in the Old Testament, where trying to induce one is recommended as a test for infidelity, that is, to find out whether a wife (or a concubine) was impregnated by another man.
Anyway, the abortion part does not fit in well with the forced birth fanatics belief system, though the idea of chattel wives, and concubines does, in my opinion.

The hatred the Rs have for this organization is telling. I understand that some of them sincerely believe abortion is murder, but abortions are something like 3% of what PP does and are not paid for by gov’t funds. So that desire to destroy can’t be due just to abortion. It’s horror that women have any control over their own sexual lives. A lot of people have had contact with PP over the years, and what they know doesn’t match what they’re being told.

My frustration is mostly with the messaging/language used to promote the pro-choice position; It’s,quite often, just plain lame.
When I was younger, I also thought that fed funds shouldn’t be used for abortion. The older I get, the more I realize that the woman who needs the abortion most is the one who most needs the help.
2. The whole “Well, adoption is always an option” thing needs to be put to rest. When a Dem speaker addresses an audience that may lean anti-choice, they need to take an impromptu audience poll.
“Raise you hands if you believe adoption is the best answer to an unwanted pregnancy? Now raise your hands if you have at least one adopted child in your family right now. That you didn’t get from China?” Yeah. Maybe we should make it like an Oprah giveaway. YOU get a baby! And YOU get a baby! You’re ALLLLL getting babies!!!
Doesn’t matter if you don’t want one, because we’re anti-choice, and that’s what we do now, right? Don’t want to put your money where your mouth is and adopt? Then shut up.
C. Dems need to co-opt the individual liberty stuff. Quite simply, from the top of my head to the tips of my toes, this physical unit belongs to me. This is my dominion and mine alone. To suggest less to to interfere with the physical independence, autonomy, and liberty of an American citizen. And it won’t be tolerated. And I won’t apologize for it.

Current economic policies do favour human beings over corporations.
Specifically, they favour the interests of job creators who want to maximize corporate profits in the short term (so they can cash in their options for a big profit) over the long term health of the corporations themselves.
A whole lot of people depend on the long term health of corporations for their own economic security, but the job creators tend to ignore this.

I think a huge part of the anti-abortion worldview- of the modern conservative worldview in general- is based on a fantasy that they can make the world work the way they want by denying the option for it to be otherwise. They don’t care about dangerous pregnancies, fetuses with lethal defects, expectant mothers whose father has run out on them, etc. because their magical thinking says that making abortion illegal will prevent those things from happening. It’s the same worldview that says that getting rid of programs for the poor will end poverty, not collecting data on gun violence will make guns safer, and refusing to negotiate with other countries will let us dictate terms to them.

And the first paragraph here hits the nail on the head, I think. It’s the sadistic RWA craving for punishment at work again. Ohio cop tells black man he tailed him and pulled him over for ‘direct eye contact’
Arturo Garcia
27 Aug 2015 at 17:55 ET
A black Ohio man got a police officer to admit to him on video that he followed him for nearly two miles and pulled him over for making “direct eye contact,” talk show host David Pakman reported.
“As suspicious as ‘making direct eye contact’ may be to a police officer, doing the exact opposite — that is, avoiding eye contact with a police officer — could be considered equally suspicious by an officer,” Pakman noted. “In other words, both making eye contact and not making eye contact with police could, conceivably, be grounds for a traffic stop, if you agree with the general principle suggested herein.”
The motorist, John Felton, posted the video online after the encounter earlier this month, saying he started recording as soon as the officer started tailing him as he drove to his mother’s house in Dayton.
“He saw Michigan plates,” Felton says. “He just needed a reason. Why would you follow me every step of the way, every turn I make?”
The officer is seen telling Felton he pulled him over for not signalling a turn 100 feet before doing so, before asking for both his driver’s license and his passengers. When Felton asks why the officer needs the other man’s license, the officer says, “I can identify who’s in the car.”
Later, the officer tells Felton he is letting him off with a warning.
“Like I said, it’s a violation if you don’t turn your turn signal on,” the officer says, before Felton cuts him off.
“You’ve been tailing me for how long? You just needed a reason to pull me over,” Felton says. “No disrespect, I don’t have nothing against police officers, but all this sh*t that’s going on now? That’s some scary sh*t. To have a police officer just tail you, and then you pull me over, ’cause you said I didn’t signal — what? Do you know how it looks?”
Felton then asks the officer again why he would pull him over.
“Because you made direct eye contact with me, and you held on to it while I was passing you,” the officer admits.
“What?” Felton asks incredulously. “I didn’t even see you.”

@Mike J: Seems like you are wrapping up a lot of problems that resulted in Dean’s campaign collapse and calling that mixed bag of stuff ‘anger’. IIRC the big problem with Howard Dean is that his positions were deemed too liberal and extreme for the country at the time. Are you referring to the ‘Dean Scream’? Was that supposed to be angry or crazy, and, given it happened after a very disappointing result in Iowa, so was it a cause of something, or merely a convenient symbol for his failure.
Anyway, times change, and which tactics and attitudes will be successful change with the times.

And if he hadn’t looked at the cop, he’d have been pulled over for suspiciously avoiding eye contact.
And if he’d made eye contact then looked away, he’d have been pulled over for suspiciously breaking eye contact.

I was kind of unenthused about Hillary for the last while, but I am really coming around to how refreshingly direct she is, and calling bullshit when she sees it. She’s a wonk, and always has been since her earliest years as a student, and what seems to have changed now is the perspective that years and experience (First Lady, Senator and Sec’y of State) have given her.
She is not capable of soaring rhetoric, just sanity and persistent intellingence and honesty about issues. This feels so refreshing compared to the insane clown posse on the right, that I actually find it comforting. I’m glad Bernie’s in the game to raise important issues, but he’s not the dude to become president -I don’t think he has the chops for the larger nature of the role.
So, who do we want for vice?
