Yes, Germany will seal the deal against Thailand, which will keep Thailand from making it as one of the 3rd place teams.

@Roger Moore:
Sadly, I am sure you are correct. During the Thailand – Cote d’Ivoire game ny wife was essentially live-blogging the match for her friends in Thailand. They were atrocious on defense but still fun to watch.

Since an Open Thread cannot have an OT post: Can I get a hell yeah?

Let’s just take a moment to note why the matches are being played simultaneously: die Schande von Gijón, the infamous West Germany-Austria group match in the 1982 men’s World Cup.
I’d pick Germany and Norway to go through, but you never know.

@Ben Cisco: Link no work. Please to fix?

Dammit, I posted two hours too early. FIFA gives you the chance for local time or your time. I had it on local time and I’m two hours ahead.
Please come back when the game is actually taking place.

A little early aren’t we?

@raven:
At least you’re only two hours early this time, rater than 24.

@Amir Khalid: Die Schande von Gijón?
Hear hear! It should never fade from memory.
In the “just desserts” department, has Austrian football amounted to much in the intervening third of a century?

Thank God that last thread is history. The comments reminded me of little kids bickering with each other.

I notice that the Juicitariat is deeply divided on whether Edward Snowden is a hero, a knave, Glenn Greenwald’s dupe, or some combination thereof. It seems similarly divided about GG himself, who strikes me as rather vain and not entirely honest in argument.

I take the early start as a sign of enthusiasm for the ladies game.
Anything other than Germany and Norway winning today and advancing, and in that order, would be a surprise.
That leaves Thailand with only a tiny glimmer of hope to make it as one of the 3rd place teams with their three points if Sweden doesn’t get at least a draw against Australia and Sweden therefore were to go home on two points.
The second 3rd-placed team to not make it to the next round will most likely come from group E and probably be Costa Rica (sorry, Valdivia). Amazingly, the 2nd-placed team from that group may advance on a grand total of two points and a negative goal difference if Spain – South Korea ends in a draw, which could totally happen.

@ThresherK:
Austria hasn’t done much since then. However, two days ago they beat Russia (in Russia) in a European Championship qualifier and are virtually a shoe-in for that tournament now, given that they are eight points ahead of 3rd place Russia.

He’s a troll. I think rumors have it that he was formerly known as some ‘Steve’.
There are two things I have learned to stay away from in my blog reading habits: A thread on Snowden/GG on BJ and a thread on libertarianism on MoJo. Those topics come with wegawatt bat signals and generate so much heat that they have a negative impact on global warming. Kevin Drum’s last post on libertarianism had more than 1,800 comments.

I was just thinking that Thailand was holding its own so far, but . . .

The CIV goalie has good reflexes, but she has a hard time coming off the line at the right point.

You had asked me in an earlier thread about the expectations that they have here in Brazil for the women’s team and I have to tell you in all honesty that the level of interest in the women’s game here is incredibly low, to the extent that I can gauge it.
Last year during the WC, the streets were empty, banks and stores closed early and expectations were stratospheric. This year, nothing even approximating that is taking place and this is exacerbated by the fact that the Copa Ámerica is taking place at the same time. I’m sure that when As Canarinhas get eliminated (I don’t expect them to make it far), there will be the usual complaints that they got robbed or someone sold out (a refrain that has been echoed here since France 1998. Apparently some people cannot believe that the better team can win without extracurricular help).
SRW1
@Randinho:
Thanks, I suspect the overlap with the Copa America is a bit unfortunate for all of the South American teams in the ladies WC.
Randinho
@SRW1: It may not be for Colombia if Los Cafeteros don’t make it out of the group and Las Cafateras do!
SRW1
Can’t watch the Ger – Thai game, but it sounds as if the German team is ruthlessly exploiting its size advantage.
And Norway makes it two. Group settled.
Randinho
@SRW1: In fairness to the Germans, it really can’t be helped. The Thai players are pretty small.

CIV gets its first goal of the tournament and its a screamer!
SRW1
@SRW1:
Not that it matters for the outcome of group B, but that was CIV’s first goal of the game, not the tournament.
Other than that, group B ‘ging seinen normalen Gang’.
Randinho
The cable channel showing the games here, Sport TV, which has three outlets, did not even show that game.
