Gotta watch the hoop!
Morzer
I guess the smart money would be on Canada, but they didn’t look all that against China. I could see the Kiwis having a point to prove and getting something out of this game.
And now thunder and lightning have stopped play!
raven
@Morzer: Where’s the game?
Morzer
Edmonton, I think.
The Dangerman
@raven:
I’m rooting for Cleveland…
…but I think their magic is done (like their legs).
Steeplejack
@Morzer:
Yes, Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton.
raven
2,000 ft huh, wonder who that favors?
Morley Bolero
Gotta root for the home team, so go Canada!
Valdivia
Go Canada.
Chile kicking but in the opening game of the Copa America. They were tied at 0 at halftime they are now 2 up. They’re really playing well and the Ecuador team was surprisingly fiesty too.
raven
@Valdivia: Do you have that whatever it is network that gets the Copa/
Omnes Omnibus
Do the futbol kiwis do a haka before matches?
raven
@Omnes Omnibus: Ever see Whale Rider?
Valdivia
@raven: I have BeIn sports en espanol, it comes with building package so I got lucky!
Omnes Omnibus
A while ago.
MattR
@raven: beIN sports? I actually have that via Comcast, but it is not in HD so it may as well not exist. I totally forgot the Copa America began. June has a wealth of good futbol – between Copa America, the Women’s World Cup, the under-20 World Cup, Euro 2016 qualifying, the Champions League final and USMNT friendlies preparing for July’s Gold Cup, I am not sure how I am supposed to get anything else done.
raven
@Omnes Omnibus: It’s centered around resistance to the young woman trying to do things reserved for males. . .like the Haka.
raven
@MattR: We ain’t got it.
MattR
@Omnes Omnibus: Apparently, but not surprisingly, FIFA banned it.
Valdivia
@MattR: The game to watch, to my mind, will be next Wednesday night at 8 between Brazil and Colombia. It sold out in Chile almost immediately. I, unfortunately will miss it because I have to teach a night class. Grrrrrrrrr.
The image is not awful here with BeIN.
MattR
@Valdivia: I will have to keep that in mind. The quality on BeIN is not horrific overall (and better than the digitially remastered footage of Secretariat I was recently watching) but the difference in clarity compared to HD is very noticeable when watching something like soccer that is filmed at a wide angle and without a lot of closeups. Pretty much the definition of white people problems :)
(EDIT: The real issue is that because it is not in HD, it is in a different channel grouping and I rarely ever check out the non-HD channels unless I remember that there is something specific I want to watch – which is why I will never watch Al-Jazeera America despite the fact that I respect them and hope they succeed in bringing an alternate POV to the news)
Valdivia
@MattR: Some of the Copa Libertadores games are like watching tv from the 1970s. The game tonight seemed a little crisper. But yeah, not high up there with problems to keep one awake at night! :)
Joel
Looks like the Warriors are going to even this one up tonight. I’m calling GS in 7. Couldn’t ask for more.
MattR
@Joel: Warriors? What country’s team is that? :)
I’d like to see the Cavs win it all just to shut up all the LeBron haters (and I do feel a bit sorry for the people of Cleveland – between their police, their weather and their sports teams, there is nothing but misery and heartbreak)
Steeplejack
@MattR:
On my system (Cox) there is an HD BeIn channel now. They add them stealthily, so maybe you should check your channel guide. Or do a search on “copa” and see if an HD channel comes up.
MattR
@Steeplejack: Did that before making my first comment in this thread :)

Republicans are American sportsmen. Regrettably, and as Vince Foster attested in his suicide note, theirs is a genuine blood sport (and they were just getting warmed up):
“..The Senate has included provisions in its military policy bill to arm Ukraine with antiarmor systems, mortars, grenade launchers and ammunition to aid in its fight against Russian-backed separatists. It would also prevent the administration from spending more than one half of $300 million in aid for Ukraine unless 20 percent is earmarked for offensive weapons. The House has passed a similar measure..”.
There are days when I look at my country and feel much as John Brown must have felt about his (that said, do not expect me to take the initiative and lead a takeover of a state arsenal; and any plan submitted for my consideration to do so had damn well better be good).
Joel
@MattR: I’m kinda pulling for the Cavaliers, too. But they have far too many scrubs on the roster. James is terrific, but he’s still human, as tonight’s effort is showing.
Valdivia
@Steeplejack: left you an answer on the Germany soccer thread.
sm*t cl*de
They couldn’t think of any way to monetise it.
