Doing a bunch of clan landings for World of tanks, plus it is summer, so I am up late. Tomorrow is Thurston’s surgery. and the poor guy doesn’t even know its coming. It’s due, though- he’s going on 7 months.
BTW- this “review” of the movie “Entourage” at Jezebel is inspired.
RepubAnon
Just don’t take him to Iowa to visit Joni Ernst…
;)
Valdivia
Good luck to Thurston on his surgery. Poor guy. One of my cats is still traumatized from his and he is 19 years old.
PurpleGirl
Thurston’s surgery: Awww, sorry puppeh but it’s done customarily now. It’s a paradox of life: had your daddy had it done, you and Lovey wouldn’t be here.
OT: I didn’t get a lot of paper cleaned out today but I cleared out stuff from the kitchen. Counter tops look nice now.
Valdivia
@PurpleGirl: boy do I love that feeling. Halfway through the semester I have a tower of notes and books teetering on my desk. I prefer it when the tower is not there.

Speaking of movies in the theatre right now, I saw Spy this weekend with Melissa McCarthy and it was hysterical. Jason Statham just about stole the movie from her though. Everyone brought their A-games. I hope it does well enough to warrant a sequel. The media was giving Melissa a hard time because Spy only made $29mm this weekend which means it “underperformed”. The entertainment media sure loves to hold female actresses to standards the men never have to meet.
On a random note, conservatives are really angry that the mainstream media is out to get Rubio because he is the most electable. I find this shocking for 3 reasons. One, why would the mainstream media target a joke like Rubio? Surely, this guy will self-implode on his own. Two, how does anyone think Rubio is the most electable? He isn’t even the most electable of the Latino candidates. Three, Rubio has fans? Really? Has he done anything in his career besides lunge for a water bottle on camera?
On a more fun note, Santorum held an event in Iowa and only 4 people showed up to it. That fills me with a dark glee.
Valdivia
@askew: oh oh I have an answer to the Rubio thing.
He actually has a fair number of fans and cheerleaders in the Village. Don’t you remember an article a couple of weeks ago about him being the GOP’s Obama? They have been trying to make that storyline happen for a few years now.
Though Rubio’s spokesperson has been saying for days these stories are being planted by Hillary, I think we can point the finger at Jeb.
FTR I don’t see the Rubio thing. At all. But that is just me.
PurpleGirl
@Valdivia: It’s a fight to keep surfaces clean and clear of stuff. I don’t like cooking fresh if there are many dishes and things on the stove. And I’ve been bad about tossing paper — magazines, junk mail, etc. for more than a year now and getting even a pile tossed makes me feel less overwhelmed. And unlike the hoarders on TV, I usually would have no problems tossing paper or boxes. Not everything that comes into my apartment is precious and deserves to be saved forever.
Redshift
@askew: Apparently, in the Bubble, the fact that Rubio is young automatically makes him JFK. You know, in the same way that Palin would make women to vote for John McCain.

This dark and very negative, but extremely well written review of Entourage by Kaleb Horton has been getting rave reviews on Twitter (and it even got an on-air shout-out from Chris Hayes). I loved the review as well (and will definitely NOT see the movie). Now I guess I’ll have to read the Jezebel review as well, to compare and contrast with Horton’s piece.
Valdivia
@PurpleGirl: I am a bit of a neat freak myself. In spite of all my rationalization plans for order and cleanliness mid term that tower of papers and notes and books appears. So I perfectly understand. And I know that feeling of relief when it’s gone. Good on you for getting the clearing out going.
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: How does one clear things out? If they are in the pile it is for a reason, right?
Brachiator
@askew: “Tomorrowland” has been branded as underperforming, and that film features George Clooney. “Spy” has received some very positive reviews, but is tracking closer to “Tammy” in box office than to McCarthy’s bigger hits. And critics have had a field day kicking the male oriented “Entourage.”
I have not seen “Spy” yet, but it sounds like fun. I may try to catch it this weekend.
I hear some good things about “Love and Mercy,” about Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson. Some critics think it one of the best films of the year, but some others were very disappointed, so it may not appeal to some tastes.
Suzanne
I need a vacation, or even just a day off to relax. My in-laws are coming next week and my house is a mess. I am tired. So tired.
Brachiator
@sharl: The Jezebel review of “Entourage” is a hoot. It goes to some unexpected places.
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: Could you stop by my apartment and organize things for me? I then tend to operate on the “I looked at that last Tuesday, so it is probably about 2/3 down that pile” principle.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus: :D You always get to the nub of the problem.
There are piles and there are piles–like the book tower on my bedside table, all books I intend to read. It has a purpose. How do I clear it unless I give up on the idea I will read this books very soon?
Piles of class notes and outlines and thought jottings really should be recycled as soon as possible.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus: You’ll laugh but when I am writing a long piece, my way of procrastinating is cleaning and organizing. When I was writing my dissertation I had to go and be at the library on 42nd street where I could not distract myself making order. And yet, I still manage to get those piles and towers :)

Comic Con in less than 31 days. I finished one animation pitch, can’t get a final response from my reader on what they think and I have to finish the last 2 before the end of next week. AND, I have to hang on to some cash so I can get these things printed. It’s probably a crazy dream any way, but you have to do what helps you get out of bed. Anyone want to read some animation pitches?
Omnes Omnibus
@Valdivia: When I started law school, I studied at home. And then, one day, I found myself cleaning a toilet as a procrastination method. For the rest of the time I was in law school, I did all of my studying at the school.
Valdivia
@Omnes Omnibus: I had a little corner in the Rose Reading Room. I hated the NYU Bobst library which is a monstrous bit of architecture.
Wag
Just got back from a great show at Red Rocks. Colin Hay of Men at Work and The Violent Femmes opening for the Barenaked Ladies. All three acts totally rocked the Amphitheater.
Omnes Omnibus
@Wag: Opening for The Bare Naked Ladies? The Femmes? We do not live in a just world!
Glad you had a nice time.
Gracie10
@Wag: That sounds like heaven.

The awesome Jezebel review got me all moist and glistening — thanks for the tip! (Yes, that’s what he said…)

Not having ever watched Entourage, it seemed pretty reasonable until the Starbucks part.
kristallnacht at Reddit today as SJW femnazi regime takes over and banhammers free speech.
We are all dudebros now.
NotMax
Today, bought all the hardware and necessaries to build a set of shelves in the kitchen that have been meaning to do for, oh, some 30+ years.

@NotMax: Probably also a good time to look at Central Services new line of ducts.

@Valdivia: If you’re still here…
One of the undergraduate deans who I worked for at NYU called Bobst “Hester’s marble mausoleum.”
A couple of the bio majors/science fiction fans I hung out with wanted to drop a rubber ball from the top floor.
I and a number of those same bio majors/science fiction readers were at the Bobst opening ceremonies. The dean knew we wouldn’t cause trouble. IT was interesting. One of my group still managed to ask Philip Johnson why he picked the red sandstone for the facade. (You know that NYU had to buy the quary when it went into bankrupcty to be sure enough wtone was cut to finish the project. They then sold the quary.)
ETA: Trisha Nixon gave comments and referred to Uncle Elm and Aunt Dodo. (Elmer Holmes Bobst and his wife Mamdouha.)
PurpleGirl
Another Bobst story: Bobst ‘gave’ NYU 11 million to build the library… well, not exactly. It was stock worth 11 million. Hester and a few other top administrators probably thought Bobst was in his 80s and would die quickly. Not so fast, Bobst kept control of the stock and when he finally died in his 90s, the stock had lost 3 million of its value and NYU had to make up the difference because they built the library based on that 11 million number.

fingers drumming… have I killed the thread.

Friday is my c-oscopy, and I finf myself awake for no reason now. Don’t worry, I’ve saved all the notes going aronud on this site about it previously.
Big props to my wife for driving And being the stay-with. I’m trying to keep her from making up little horror stories about hers, to keep from trying to scare me. But I did marry her for her sense of humor.
piratedan
@PurpleGirl: well in all honesty, you were simply standing your ground when the thread threatened you….

@ThresherK (GPad): if you followed the directions and “cleaned” yourself out prior… should be easy-cheesy. I gotta say, that the stuff that they use to put you out these days is awesome. Not much of a fog post the procedure and despite it all, you even receive a modicum of sympathy from your loved ones afterwards
ThresherK (GPad)
@sharl: That’s a work of Ebertian quality, that review is.
I had not read it til now. Great share.
ThresherK (GPad)
@piratedan: Thanks. I have to buy Jell-O. (They paid a lot for the IP of that spelling.)
May just take it easy on ye old tract digestif today.

@Valdivia: Welcome to my organizational approach; a pile for everything, and everything it its pile.

@piratedan
Most often nowadays, they don’t put you out. You are lucid and communicative, it’s just that the drug administered blocks the formation of memories, so that time ends up a blank.

Today we practiced 3 ways to break out of a rear naked choke. Needless to say, I would have passed out each time it was my turn. I could get out in three seconds or so standing up though, especially with my height advantage..

@NotMax: my dentist likes benzo’s.
At least that’s what he tells me.
ThresherK (GPad)
@NotMax: I don’t know how lucid I want to be for this.
ThresherK (GPad)
@Gravenstone: Don’t forget the archaeological approach. If you’re looking for your tax returns, and you’ve hit a Super Bowl sales event flyer, for example, you’ve gone too far down that pile.

John, as a military man, perhaps you can play taps and salute Thurston before he says an unwitting goodbye to his boys…, or just as a fellow fella…and I’m sure he’s going to be just fine with his new neuticles, you’re getting him neuticles of course, aren’t you? Word has it that they will help ease your trauma too: http://www.neuticles.com/.
Or maybe you’ll just go out for pancakes or something.
Oh help me Jesus, I just investigated the neuticles site some more. Not only does it have the bosomy Kim K endorsing it, but apparently you can now do some RFID stuff on you dog via his new fake balls. Oh yes….once he had balls and could roam and explore and make puppies, and now, when he is not stuck at home, you can track him on your iphone via his fake balls. I think all dogs will agree that this is truly one of the harbingers of the fall of our once mighty empire.
Peter
@ThresherK (GPad): I’ve not had a colonoscopy, but I’ve had similar procedures done. You will not have any sensation of time passing between when they gas you and when you wake up afterwards. You may be lucid, but you won’t retain any of the experiences. So don’t worry about it.
raven
@NotMax: They did that when they repaired my ulnar never a couple of weeks back.
Valdivia
@PurpleGirl: Sorry i collapsed last night so only see this now.
I had no idea about the Quary! No matter where I went in that library I could never concentrate. The much smaller Law Library 2 blocks down was much better but always crowded.
@Gravenstone: :)
Kathleen
@Valdivia: Well, he’s a David Brooks fave, so there’s that.

That Jezebel review was a great way to wake up. Nothing like a good laugh to clear out the morning cobwebs. NSFW, though.

@Valdivia: Don’t know much about NY libraries but my university just remodeled their entire library. It was closed o two years. It now sucks for studying. Every ‘individual’ study area is at a table in a wide open cavernous space with industrial lighting. It was much better for studying before the renovation.

Condolences to Thurston. (Or should I say, to every male dog owner) ;-)
At least the procedure is easier than having a female spayed. He should be home today.

@greennotGreen: Damn, no kidding about NSFW. I opened it at work, with my monitor in full view of my coworkers (it’s pretty casual around here) and could hardly hit the “close” button fast enough. I’ll have to savor it in private later.
