It is my opinion that Koda is a knucklehead, just like my knuckleheads!
“The United States will not be imprisoned by the past — we’re looking to the future, I’m not interested in having battles that frankly started before I was born.” Mr. Obama said of his approach to Cuba.
“The Cold War,” he added, “has been over for a long time.”
Mr. Castro also made clear that he did not blame Mr. Obama for the legacy of bad blood between their two countries, and expressed admiration for the American president, calling him an “honest man” and praising as a “positive step” his reconsideration of Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Speaking of doggie adoptions, Nya, the one who needed the abdominal surgery, got her forever home!
We are so happy to announce that Nya (now Julep) has been adopted!!! After struggling to put weight on her for the first 6 weeks in our care, we discovered that Nya had a diaphragmatic hernia. Her abdominal organs were in her chest cavity and her stomach was pressing on her heart… Which made eating very painful for her. Nya’s surgery was very expensive and we worked our tails off to raise the $5200 needed to save her life. Thank you to all of our donors that made this adoption possible! PS – her new owner is a vet, so she will be receiving the best medical care for the rest of her life!
@gbear: Yeah, I thought the same thing. Lovey looks a little scared. She’ll adjust but it has to be a bit of a shock at the moment. “Who are all these new people and this big dog?”

She Is pretty calm but she is teething right now with baby teeth falling out and adult teeth coming in so we have to watch her every second. She is great with commands and learns new things quickly. I can definitely see the shepherd protectiveness because she has barked more in the last month than my lab did in 15 years.
I was dog sitting a senior lab for a friend and realized that she is a single pet dog. As soon as he went home she settled down significantly. We have a couple puppies we have play dates with and she loves them especially now that they can run at the field without as much snow on the ground.
I should send Anne Laurie some new pictures so you can see how much she has grown and changed.

@Mnemosyne: I guess this is the danger of anthromorphizing.
Because to me she’s saying what all Labs and all big dogs (and most small ones) are always saying when they smile: “What fun thing are we going to do next?”
And practically everything is classified as a “fun thing” for Labs.
I’ve never owned a chocolate Lab but I always enjoy greeting them on the street. There’s something about Labs and chocolates in particular that appeals to me. And the feeling is often mutual; I’ve had dogs detour to say hello to me, much to their owners consternation. Probably because I tend to look them in the eye and know some of the more subtle play signals. As a kid I used to enjoy riling up dogs from across the room.
95.
Pogonip
@geg6: I envision her checking off her list: peed in one room, check; pooped in another, check; let’s see, now I have to either barf on a rug or chew up something expensive…oh, and don’t forget to howl all night…oh! I hope Cole remembered to leave a worn T-shirt or unwashed pillow case. If he didn’t, call him back and make him leave his shirt.
@raven: That reminds me of Cole’s furminator photo with Tunch. Adorable.
97.
raven
@MomSense: It was almost 90 at the Masters yesterday. The skeeters are here and the kudzu has started growing. A good daddy would brush a cocker daily but I leave her be and shave her every 6 months or so. The pecan droppings stick to her like glue so this was the time.
98.
Pogonip
@Steve: Would that it were as easy to rescue children. But as long as you bring up children, monsterhunternation.com is soliciting donations for a family who lost a child suddenly, via Paypal. They have no money for a funeral. This site has a large and generous readership so I’m glad you jogged my mind to put this before them.
99.
Pogonip
@geg6: You know, looking at those ears, if she’s not already used to Lovey, you might consider changing the name to Batgirl.
@Steve: It may also be that some of us can handle a dog but not a kid. Not to mention it’s kind of easier to pick up a stray dog than it is a stray kid. It’s also kind of easier to give away a dog to a good home than it is a kid. Which is why people who rescue animals rescue animals, but not children. But keep on keeping on, trying to shame people for doing something good..
So I assume you’ve already offered to adopt the child in this video. Of course, he already has a (pregnant) mother, but it’s no big deal to take a child away from his mother, right? Maybe you can get the court to make her give you the baby she’s pregnant with as well.
See? Rescuing children is just as easy as rescuing animals.
109.
Pogonip
@Elizabelle: I wondered about that too. Lovey in particular looks quite long.
110.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Pogonip: Monster Hunter Nation is one of those sites where if they say the sky is blue, I check out the window.
111.
Pogonip
@Steve: I know courts in the U.S. are inclined to give an adopted child back to the natural mother if she changes her mind, not to mention father’s rights; a guy finds out his ex had his baby and gave it up and goes to get his child back. Tgere’ve been several of those cases in our local news. However, I would not go so far as to say one must decide between helping animals OR helping people.
This is a feature I see increasingly in the modern American character. Everything’s black and white, either/or. Animals OR people. Liberal OR conservative. Evil fraternity brothers OR sluts. No in-between. It’s a big factor in making the country ungovernable and I don’t like it a bit.
112.
Violet
@Pogonip: And of course the two never intersect. The rescued dog never becomes the best friend of the child in need. A child never has an animal for a friend, nor do they learn how to be kind and caring in part from taking care of a pet. Children and animals never cross paths, never mean anything to each other, are never helpful in any way to each other. Utterly separate.
113.
Pogonip
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: Well, then you are part of the problem, as I was mentioning to Steve. Larry can be a Sad Puppy and still help out people in trouble. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
114.
Pogonip
@Violet: Yup, either/or. Unquestionably the worst thing about modern America ( and it’s a crowded field!).
115.
gelfling545
@Steve: By all means, let’s just piss on people doing something good that does reduce the suffering in the world because they didn’t, and possibly couldn’t, do something else. All beings wish to be happy & be spared suffering. Not the human only.

@raven: That reminds me of Cole’s furminator photo with Tunch. Adorable.

@MomSense: It was almost 90 at the Masters yesterday. The skeeters are here and the kudzu has started growing. A good daddy would brush a cocker daily but I leave her be and shave her every 6 months or so. The pecan droppings stick to her like glue so this was the time.

@geg6: You know, looking at those ears, if she’s not already used to Lovey, you might consider changing the name to Batgirl.

Steve is just our latest right-wing troll. He doesn’t give two rats’ asses about children.

As the father of five and one who has assisted in helping adoption efforts for others I gotta disagree baud. Thanks for the kind comments tho

@Steve:
You deserve it.
Steve
Pogonip- it’s not easy to rescue children. That’s why people clamor and coo over adopting animals. It it an easier way to feel good about yourself.
Suzanne
Dawwww, look at that gorgeous family! Love the Lovey! Koda is handsome!
Elizabelle
What a great day. Happy pups and people. Keep us posted.
Are they sure the dad was a coon tick hound, or whatever? I’ve wondered if the pups have dachshund in their mix.

Mnemosyne
@Steve:
Pogonip
@Elizabelle: I wondered about that too. Lovey in particular looks quite long.

@Pogonip: Monster Hunter Nation is one of those sites where if they say the sky is blue, I check out the window.

Pogonip
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: Well, then you are part of the problem, as I was mentioning to Steve. Larry can be a Sad Puppy and still help out people in trouble. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.
Pogonip
@Violet: Yup, either/or. Unquestionably the worst thing about modern America ( and it’s a crowded field!).

@Steve: By all means, let’s just piss on people doing something good that does reduce the suffering in the world because they didn’t, and possibly couldn’t, do something else. All beings wish to be happy & be spared suffering. Not the human only.

@Pogonip: It’s not just that he’s a Picnic Skunk. It’s that the whole crew of them have irretrievably been slotted in my mental map as lying liars by their behavior since the brouhaha started.
It’s also been my experience that otherwise quite intelligent people who are on the conservative end of the spectrum tend to be rather gullible. Even when I otherwise trust such a person, I always check that they’ve gotten accurate information from their source.

geg, I hope you and your family love Lovey as much as Cole does. The pictures so far are so cute.
