Will the northernmost country in South America or the only country in South America completely outside of the tropics move on?
I lived in Jackson Heights, NY for 13 years before I moved to Brazil and ate several times at one of the many Colombian restaurants in the neighborhood. If I was really really hungry, I would order the Bandeja Paisa:
To make a traditional Bandeja Paisa, you need a portion of each of the following:
Red beans, white rice, fried mince, fried egg, chorizo fried, fried pork (meat or skin), sliced avocado, fried banana, arepa (flat bread made from cornmeal).
Put all of the ingredients on an oval plate or tray and serve.
Feeling a bit full after the Bandeja Paisa? Have a Chivito, Uruguay’s national sandwich:
1good soft white sandwich bun (ciabatta)
*Salsa golf (a mixture of tomato sauce and mayonnaise)
*lettuce
1/2red bell pepper, sliced
*Thinly sliced onions
3stripspancetta
1thinly sliced filet steak
4slicessmoked ham
*slicebacon
*Tomato slices
1hard-cooked egg, halved
*mozzarella cheese

It sounds as if it’s the soundtrack playing under a humorous scene in “Barry Lyndon” or some other period piece.

So let’s see how good Colombia really is. Uruguay without Suarez should be relatively easy to beat for a really good team, and Colombia might be a really good team.
Violet
I don’t have a favorite in this match. Last World Cup I loved Forlan–so gorgeous. This time I haven’t seen him play.
In other Uruguayan news:
Love how The Guardian worded their take on his excuse. Heh.

A Colombian restaurant near my house sells a “mini paisa” – all of the above, just less of it. My wife and I frequently split one for lunch on Sundays.

Go Colombia!!!

@HumboldtBlue: I find all those scenarios plausible.
Probably a gender thing.

@Valdivia: Have you ever had Brachetto d’Aqui? It’s a red (Italian) but you chill it, has a little spritz.
If not, find out where you can get it and get it. You will like.

@Valdivia: I forget–are you from Colombia?
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@burningambulance: Where do you live?

A slowish, cagey match between a possession team and a counter-attacking one might be an appropriate change of pace after that hell-for-leather encounter between Brazil and Chile.
OzarkHillbilly
Uruguay all the way. I want them to get revenge for the bite felt ’round….. wait a minute, never mind.
Valdivia
@Violet:
No I’m from Costa Rica :) but we Ticos always feel a kinship to Colombians. We have almost the same accent. Also, too. I don’t want Uruguay to win.

@Randy Paul aka Randinho: Elizabeth, NJ. When Colombia won their last game, an entire street was blocked off downtown.

I guess by now at latest Rodriguez has made it into the circle of candidates for outstanding player of the tournament.

Yeah, big Latino community in Elizabeth. After that last goal just now, Jackson Heights and Elizabeth must be rocking.

Goal! Go Colombia!
Randy Paul aka Randinho
Colombia certainly has the best goal celebration.
Amir Khalid
I love those wonderful out-of-nowhere goals. They really make people sit up.
Violet
@Valdivia: Thanks. I couldn’t remember which country you were from. Love Costa Rica so I’ll be supporting them unless they play the US, of course!
Colombia looking good now. Who’s that babyface player they’ve got that just scored that goal? He looks 12.
? Martin
That is a professional goal right there. Fantastic.
I would like to revisit the idea of a hairstyle competition in lieu of penalty kicks. I think there’s merit in the idea if we can work out how to fairly judge.
HumboldtBlue
This the fourth time we’ve seen them and other than maybe France I don’t think anyone has more pace across the field and more elan in their attack than Colombia.

@Randy Paul aka Randinho:
Did they do the Shakira Hips Don’t Lie move again?
Valdivia
@BGinCHI: thank you for the tip. I’ll look for it for sure. Last year while in nyc I had a really dry Lambrusco. It was so surprisingly wonderful and refreshing. Though it has a bad reputation from the 70s it has become more sophisticated since then. I recommend you find some too!
Valdivia
@Violet: thanks for the support! We need it. :)
That cutie is James. Their star.
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@Valdivia: I’m a big fan of Portuguese vinho verde, especially in the summer. There’s no more refreshing beverage and Gazela is one of the best brands. It’s also very inexpensive.
Violet
@askew: Yeah, it looked like they were dancing a little cumbia. Love it.

Another Tico supporter here! :) One of our good friends is from Costa Rica and we watched their first win (against Uruguay, natch) at his house. Talk about a celebration!!!

@Violet: You should hear their radio calls, the hometown announcer loses his shit while playing music and screaming gooooolllllll
Violet
@Valdivia: He’s adorable. Apparently their best player ever at the old age of 22 or something–or so the announcers said.
@? Martin: I’m all for some kind of hairstyle competition. Seems to be quite the competitive sport on its own this World Cup. Some of the hairstyles are quite fabulous.
HumboldtBlue
@Violet: Here are a few examples of Colombian celebrations
Violet
@HumboldtBlue: I bet! Love listening to the announcers lose their minds when their team scores.

@Randy Paul aka Randinho: I love Vinho Verde. I always have some at home in the summer. :)
The Lambrusco is strange because it’s deep red. I’d never had anything like that before.
Nutella
I like the Uruguayan milanesa sandwich rather than chivito. It’s very similar to the US midwestern pork tenderloin sandwich except for two things:
1. The breaded and fried meat is beef or chicken rather than pork.
2. It’s as big as your head.
Milanesas and chivitos are very popular in Montevideo, along with pizza, pasta, the best ice cream anywhere, and lots of extremely sugary pastries, but surprisingly the locals are all quit slim and trim.
scav
That makes game two where the goal posts and cross bar are weighing in, no?

@Nutella: Let’s see how long that holds up now that pot has been legalized there. ;-)
In all seriousness, I’m going to guess its because the largest meal of the day is eaten at lunch. It’s something I’ve really gotten accustomed to since moving to Brazil.

@Amir Khalid: Indeed, just as you intervene often enough in your other avatar. Hard not to, as physical nets must have support (amusing myself thinking about the game if there were purely virtual nets) just thought it was interesting how often it was being mentioned in these two matches after comments late in the last thread.
eta, although totally eclipsed by James now.

What an incredible build-up to that goal! What terrific teamwork!

@Violet: Cuadrado’s header was perfect

Damn, I lost my satellite feed in the storm so I didn’t get to see this goal. But, excited Colombia got another one in.

Randinho,
1. muinta (sp?) obrigada for the recipes!
I’m using the earlier tutu recipe as a way to make use of my Trader Joe’s veg chorizo sausage. (YAY for TJ’s making a mock sausage without gluten or sugar!)
2. any recommendations on how people living nearer to John Cole than to a big city might buy farofa? (manioc flour condiment)

ColombiaRodriguez 2-0 Uruguay. What comes of having your brilliant but bitey star striker sent home. This one won’t be going to penalties.Violet
@HumboldtBlue: Yeah, the whole thing was gorgeous. Perfect teamwork, excellent execution, beautiful goal. Just perfect.
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@HumboldtBlue: Indeed. Scolari better make sure he watches this game.
Valdivia
@BGinCHI: definitely looking forward to tasting it! You always hook me up right. WTSO is my source of wines year round. :)
Violet
@Lyrebird: Looks like you can buy it online. Have you looked into that? Sometimes that works well, sometimes it’s prohibitively expensive or the stores look questionable and not trustworthy.
Valdivia
@HumboldtBlue: I think so too. As everyone is saying that was beautiful team work and so wonderfully done.
HumboldtBlue
@Randy Paul aka Randinho: @Violet: There is just something about these guys. They play with no fear, they are all 12 years old and can run for days and now that Ham-ezz is dominating it seems that those little bounces of the ball are going their way.
They and France have been outstanding
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@Lyrebird: Muito is the correct spelling.
My sister in law lives in Huntsville, AL and she makes excellent Brazilian cheese bread with manioc flower that she gets at a local Caribbean food store. Any ethnic food store should probably have it, especially if it concentrates on foods from Central and South America. Yucca, manioc, cassava are all essentially the same thing and are popular to use because the plant itself can grow under really miserable conditions.
Violet
@HumboldtBlue: I was so busy taking care of my parents I didn’t get to see enough of the matches during the group stages. I saw some but I didn’t see Colombia play at all. They are great and James is really impressive. I could see Colombia going far given how they’re playing.
James’ commercial worth is going to skyrocket after this–price he can command as a player plus endorsement deals. He’s so good and so adorable. Very marketable.
scav
@Randy Paul aka Randinho: (and @Lyrebird: really) Should show up in any African themed store or aisle too (as if they’re more thickly spread on the ground) as I’d assume the stuff for fufu would work. I’ve found that in what looked to be a pure Chinese grocery store in Iowa. (once found Spanish chorizo in a Chinese store in CA).
mai naem
I do not follow soccer but I like Uruguay the country so go Uruguay!
Otmar
That should have been a red card.

That was bizarre. Armero deserved getting kicked. The yellow on top for him is maybe a bit harsh.
Amir Khalid
@mai naem:
Um, they’re two goals down to Colombia. And they have, like, ten minutes to claw it back. And they don’t have Monster Fang anymore.
Violet
James was amazing. Well deserved applause as he leaves.
HumboldtBlue
Oh, and for Brazilian fans who think they earned a win I present to you this wonderful child who will teach you about stealing one with some help from the donut gods.
aretino
Uruguay’s attack just doesn’t have the same bite without Suarez.
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@HumboldtBlue: It’s not a win. It’s a tie with Brazil advancing on PK’s.
Amir Khalid
@aretino:
You can say that again. They have only him to blame for their exit.
SRW1
Deserved win by Colombia. They will be a handful for Brazil in the next round.
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@SRW1: they will. Felipao better up his game.
scav
Ok, revealing question time. Baseline, both good but I somehow found the second goal slightly prettier because it was trickier and teamier, while the first was individually clever, physical, and also a bit lucky (stunning to watch). others?
Randy Paul aka Randinho
@scav: Completely agree.

@Nutella: the recipes seem really meat-heavy.

@Randinho
That is sort of hilarious – We had dinner at a Venezuelan place last night & this is exactly what we had. The pork was belly, fried to a crisp as was the chorizo. Not sure if it is the style of Venezuela or that they are now stuck in the Midwest but the chorizo was as mild as Swede sausage.

The new shrines to Sao Crossbar and Sao Upright that will be constructed in every town in Brazil by tomorrow morning had better be full of worshippers next week. They are going to need all the help they can get against Colombia.

@Randy Paul aka Randinho: Thanks again! I do know some of those synonyms… but “ethnic food” in these here hills means “tubes of different-colored goop to make purported fruit pies with”. The nearest Mexican grocery is ~2 hrs away.
@Violet:
Yeah, totally agreed…
Lyrebird
@scav: Thanks! You do need to check fufu flour, bc you can get taro fufu flour in some stores. Thousands of miles away stores… but anyhow, this is probably too late to catch y’all, but thanks again!
