OK, I kn ow Brazil is in parts of three hemispheres, but what about time zones? Why so dark back east?
humboldtblue
Way to go Chileans on the anthem
PigInZen
Australia is toast. And BST is like what, +5 to EST?
paulw
Gotta root for the team that can beat the miami heat. …what?
paulw
@humboldtblue: southern hemisphere facing away from the sun, hence shorter hours
humboldtblue
@paulw: But some of these games are in the Northern Hemisphere

If (and I realize it’s a big if) Australia wins, just how hot a blowtorch would that throw into Group B?
humboldtblue
What great trivia, last time a full-time player for a Wales side played in a WC was in 1958 when Wales lost to Brazil in the quarters, Aussies have a Cardiff City player
C.J.
@PigInZen: According to ESPN guy, Rio de Janeiro is only +1 to EST, and whichever city they’re in for Chile/Australia is actually far enough to the west to be equal to EST.
Randinho
@humboldtblue: No, only a smidgeon of Brazil is in the northern hemisphere. Manaus is the northernmost city that is a WC site and it’s still in the southern hemisphere.
Onkel Fritze
@humboldtblue: So close to the equator there’s little variation anyway.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
And how hard is Spain praying for an upset here?
? Martin
Socceroos FTW! Let Cantor-Brat be your inspiration! Underdogs can win, just bitch about brown people incessantly on the pitch, and victory is certain to be yours!
Tommy
@C.J.: I am a huge hiker camper. Brazil is a place I’d like to visit and walk around. I guess saying that I should know, but Brazil is a really large country. I assume many times zones.
humboldtblue
@Randinho: @Onkel Fritze: OK< thanks
humboldtblue
Aussies had three chances to clear ball and failed
? Martin
@Tommy:
You do realize that literally every living thing in Brazil will eat you, including the plants.
PigInZen
@C.J.: Thanks! I cannot remember where I got the idea that Brazil was so far to the east.
Violet
I have to pull for Australia because of the name Socceroos. It’s just adorable.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
Oops
? Martin
@humboldtblue: Yeah, that’s not the kind of defense that leads to additional World Cup games.
[Several seconds and one goal later…]Nor is that.
? Martin
@Violet: There are indeed worse reasons to cheer for them.
Besides, it looks like they’re going to need all the help they can get right now.
morfydd
um. we have given up on schnapps per goal. clearly a good plan at Chile 2-0 at under 15 minutes.
humboldtblue
Oh well, up early in the morning for another day, this could get ugly
Randinho
@Tommy: Only four, including one that consists solely of islands and one that consists of just the tip of the furthest west part of the country, kind of like El Paso being in mountain time.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
Double oops.
? Martin
@morfydd: Don’t give up! It’s Friday!
? Martin
Yay! Socceroos sent the ball vaguely toward the goal! Progress!
Tommy
@? Martin: Yes and that is like half of the reason I want to go there:)! Now with that said I’d educate myself before I went. Don’t head into a strange place and not know what is going on. When you walk off into the wild, miles from a highway or hospital, well you need to understand what is going on.
Randinho
@PigInZen: It is fairly far to the east. Consider this: João Pessoa, the capital of the state of Paraiba is the easternmost point in the Americas and is closer to the capital of Sierra Leone in Africa than to the capitals of Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela.
Randinho
And for the record in more fun facts, Lima, Peru on the Pacific coast of South America is east of Pensacola, Florida.
droog
Hmm. After Spain’s implosion I sense the top three teams in this group will try to make as many goals at the expense of Australia to improve their goal-difference score. That was North Korea’s fate the last time around.
morfydd
@í ¼í¼· Martin:
Actually it’s Saturday here. and the rest of Saturday had better be quieter…
Randinho
Cahill: That’s why they play the games.
Violet
@? Martin: Yeah, when you don’t really care about the outcome of a particular match, it’s easy to pull for a team of something like their mascot or name or the fact that your friend or family member was from there or something.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
One back. The Socceroos need to sacrifice another goat to tie this thing up.
? Martin
Hey, thats more like it!
Tommy
@morfydd: Oh time zones. I often joke “stupid American” to referrer to myself. I had a potential client email me. Wanted to schedule a call. He was in Australia. He ended his email explaining time zones and such. To be honest I needed all that info cause I was clueless. As I said “stupid American.”
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Tommy: We do have time zones in the US.
Tommy
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): Yes I know that :). Heck most of my clients are not in my time zone. I just don’t know what time it is in England or Australia. When I talk to folks from said nations they tend to know what time it is where I live.
Morzer
Chile to win 4-2. Although my predictive confidence has taken a beating today and can only be restored by tax cuts for the wealthy and free market solutions for the poor.
? Martin
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name): Er, they’re freedom zones, comrade.
Morzer
@? Martin:
I thought they were zone fries?
Violet
@Tommy: you can google the time. Just put in the search box what time is it in and list the city or place you want to know. The local time comes right up.
LT
Beauty of a goal. Aussies can do this.
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Tommy: There are apps for that.
@? Martin: Time is freedom now?
Morzer
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name):
Time is money
Money is speech
Speech is free
Therefore time is freedom.
Calouste
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name):
Time is money. Money is Freedom. Ergo, Time is Freedom.
Onkel Fritze
@? Martin: Just the two in the middle. The two on the outside are kinda gay.
Tommy
I just have to ask and guess I am totally outing myself of not knowing anything about soccer, but what is with the Spanish fans wearing orange suits?
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Calouste: I counter that with the Kristoffson Principle: Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose. Nothin’ ain’t worth nothin’ but it’s free.
MattR
@Tommy: Pretty sure those were the Dutch fans. They typically wear orange while the Spanish wear red. I think FIFA made both wear their alternate uniforms today.
? Martin
Oh my was that close.
Tony J
By the Gymsocks of Jeebus, thought this was over in the first 20 mins, but the Aussies have been on top ever since. I just get the feeling that if they equalise the Chileans will crack.
Off the goal-line! Come on you convicts!
humboldtblue
@Tommy: As Matt says, those were the Dutch in Orange, Spain will not use their blue kit this year, their away kit is red and when you see Orange you always know it’s the Dutch
? Martin
@Tony J: Yeah, I think so too. An equalizer would make this a very interesting game.
humboldtblue
Criminey, lost my feed and can’t get it back
? Martin
Oh, FFS, you need to shoot the ball for it to go in the net!
humboldtblue
another chance
Tony J
@? Martin:
The Chileans are dropping deeper and deeper and hitting on the break but not very well most of the time. Australia need a little luck, maybe a free-kick or a well delivered corner and they can win this.
At which point this group is anyone’s guess.
humboldtblue
We get four games tomorrow and for those of us in PST the times couldn’t be more perfect
Origuy
While most of Brazil is in one hour ahead of Eastern Time, it should be two. Look at the time zone map; the eastern part of Brazil is directly under Greenland. In fact, all of South America is shifted by at least one time zone from where it ought to be. (That is, where the center of the meridian is noon when the sun is at zenith.
humboldtblue
Aussies are spent
? Martin
Yeah, out of time and out of energy.
Onkel Fritze
@Origuy: Did you figure in daylight saving time? The US goes one hour forward (geographically speaking further east) in summertime.
Randinho
@Origuy: It would be if the US were not on DST. The South and Southeast Regions as well as Goias and Brasilia go on DST in the summer. As the seasons are reversed, the time difference then becomes 3 hours from EST in the US winter.
Tony J
Looks like Chile are going to see this one out – damn, they’ve scored – but they certainly haven’t lived up to their billing as potential challengers. If you can get put under the cosh for most if the game by mighty Australia…
humboldtblue
Saw that coming, good effort by the Aussies they should enjoy a few pints tonight and that’s a big goal for Chile
Morzer
Well, it was a gallant effort by Australia and Chile will be feeling rather relieved to have ended up with the win.
humboldtblue
@Tony J: Spain could carve up the Chile defense but that’s a good win and Chile will be a big factor and they have a six goal differential on Spain already
LT
God almighty. That was Australia’s anytime they wanted it 2nd half. What a total bummer.
Turgid Jacobian
Chile was much the better team, despite the consolation goal. They were denied repeatedly by last-ditch defending.
burnspbesq
It will be overlooked because Chile eventually got a third goal, but the save on Bresciano midway through the second half was HUGE.
pseudonymous in nc
The Aussies ran out of steam with about 15 minutes left, but the Chileans were too clever with their possession for too long, and while they deserved the win, the score flattered them. Weirdly, I think the Dutch might wish that the group draw gave them Chile next, even though they can guarantee qualification by beating the Aussies.
Leeds man
@Turgid Jacobian:
Yeah, last-ditch defending is totes more unfair than penultimate-ditch defending.
DaveInOz
I was fearing the worst after the first 15 minutes but Australia settled and started making a game of it. Tim Cahill is awesome in the air and a 5’7″ centre back will have no chance against him if a good delivery comes across. We pushed for the equaliser for most of the second half but some of the players were dead on their feet by the end of the game. The third goal was a shame as they didn’t deserve it. You could see by the relief of the Chile players how close they thought they were to not winning.
