Good game so far between Rangers and Kings, and between Charlotte and Denver (pro lax).
US looked good against Nigeria.

I am waiting for the NBA finals tomorrow and the drama of LeBron James. Will they have the AC on ?

Hanging out at the drive in (with its new digital projector) to watch Edge of Tomorrow. I have gotten to the point that I prefer drive-ins over regular theaters.

Gorgeous day here in NYC – mid-80s with virtually no humidity. A little warm for my liking, but it beats the standard humidity-ridden summer days at this temperature.
Getting a late workout in after stuffing my face with BBQ at the festival at Madison Square Park and getting my wedding suit measurements taken this morning. Less than 100 days until the big day, and so many fun little details to figure out between now and then.

John, If you are a weather wimp, move to SoCal. When I lived there, bad weather was rain on Saturday messing up your weekend. Now, I think they are doing rain dances in the whole state.
I am a weather wimp too. I have sweat barrels since I moved to the Ozarks. Humidity is a bitch here—not to mention chiggers and ticks!

I’m jealous, it’s been in the mid to upper 80s the last week and mid to upper 90s the week before.

Well, I’m not going to DC. Suffice it to say sometimes family can sure kill a good time.
It became obvious early last week, that I was more interested in taking this trip in July than my family was.
Oh well, I’ve got to resign myself to the fact that if I want to travel, I’ll just have to become comfortable travelling and doing things by myself.
I’m basically an introverted person, but I really don’t like to go out for a movie or to eat alone. I’m basically too used to big family things.
I sent an email to my Senator and Congressional Rep to cancel my White House tour request.
Le sigh…

Had sports jeopardy audition today. Did a 30 question test to whittle down 300 to 25 and made it through. 2nd section was a mock game and interview. Now have to wait to see if I get cast over the next year.
It was fun. Did it in the wheel of fortune studio and I got busted messing with the wheel.

LA scored to pull within one, then the Rangers got that back in…11 seconds?
I remember when opposite sides scoring goals 20 seconds apart seemed fast.

Move to Santa Monica, CA. It is exactly like that about 95% of the year. We all make our own choices in life!
KG
@Walker: when have theaters ever been a better option than a drive in? Sadly, there aren’t many (any?) drive ins in Southern California these days

I had mentioned on here a few weeks back about one of my good friends (and one of my groomsmen) being in a severe funk (likely serious depression). I’ve been chatting with his brother, and it appears that they finally convinced him (somehow) to go see a therapist. That said, I still haven’t spoken to him directly in 3 weeks now, and frankly with my wedding coming up in about 3 months, I have to make a decision about whether to drop him or not. What do y’all think is the right move / if I should let him go, the right way to go about giving him the news gently?
I also haven’t sent his wedding invitation yet (the only person I haven’t mailed) because I don’t have any honest idea about what condition he is in. If he is still drinking regularly, uncouth, and generally a loose cannon, I’m not sure I even want him to attend.

@rda909: Having my bachelor party there at the beginning of August and SO looking forward to it, a lot due to the fact that the weather is phenomenal in that part of LA all year round.

Got back from India on Tuesday, but still a bit jetlagged, 9.30 hour time difference is a bit hard to get used to.
Caturday Kitteh agrees.

Denver has won 19 straight regular-season games, but Charlotte has a one-goal lead early in the fourth quarter. Shot clock and two-point line mean this one is far from over.
Playing goal in lax is a fool’s errand at any level, but in the pros, where everybody can shoot it 100 mph? You gotta be nutz.
Ash Can
@PsiFighter37: Don’t ask us. We’re strangers. Ask his brother.

@KG: There’s one in Imperial Beach and I think there’s still one in Santee.

It was cold and often rainy today but we got the move done without any major disruptions or meltdowns. The grandkids are excited as hell to have their very own bedrooms & they got to choose the colors the folks painted them this week. I’m a bit stiff & sore but I’ll live. Had stuffed baked potatoes because we didn’t feel like fussing & they were exceptionally good tonight.
ThresherK
@burnspbesq: What do think of those new ads for the lacrosse gear maker which are popping up during lax games?
Roger Moore
@nancy darling:
Better watch out where you move. Some people don’t like it when it gets into triple digits, even when it’s a dry heat, and there are plenty of places in SoCal where that’s common in the summer.
Schlemizel
@Ash Can:
Brother? Why not give _him_ a call and talk to him. If he is battling depression he might appreciate the chance to talk to someone.

Just checked in on the ISEE-3 Reboot:
I was on the launch team at GSFC way back then, so it’s really cool to see this thing come off.
And they sure don’t make satellites like they used to.

@ThresherK:
Don’t like it, but the equipment makers are paying the bills, so I’ll live. It’s better than having no TV from Memorial Day until the second weekend in February.

@Poopyman: That is very cool. It’s also very cool that NASA is letting them do this. Is there nothing that Kerbal Space Program can’t solve?
I don’t know, there’s a couple of recent rovers that have made everyone proud.
ThresherK
@burnspbesq: I don’t really mind the idea of selling kids on lacrosse, but the bit about how it’ll help him get cheerleaders reminds me of an equally silly, yet fake, ad on Adult Swim about how the recorder (the musical instrument) will help the buyer get groupies, who are as crazy for that as they are for guitar gods.

Sorry for going political, but damnit this pisses me off.
So no surprise, but this is what the Faux News Fuckers and the other media assholes have aided and abetted…FBI: Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s parents have received threats
Ash Can
@Schlemizel: That too.
Mnemosyne
@KG:
It’s technically not a drive-in, but there are outdoor movies in Los Angeles. We’re going to see “Blazing Saddles” at the Autry in August. Make sure you bring a (low) beach chair and not a regular lawn chair or they’ll make you sit on the grass.
MattR
@burnspbesq: The fact that multiple players can hit 110 under the right conditions is ridiculous. I do like the twist where they are giving a fan the opportunity to compete in the fastest shot competition at the all-star game. Would love to see Mike Birney make the trip to Boston and throw his hat in the ring.

@Poopyman: I wonder what else we could hijack on the DSN

@lamh36:
Family! You really need to find a friend or two who likes to travel, or at least a friend in the area you want to visit who can show you around.
@PsiFighter37:
Uninviting your friend entirely will probably break the friendship permanently. As someone else suggested, I would talk to his brother or parents first. You might be able to get away with telling him that you don’t want to put the financial burden of being a groomsman on him, but completely withdrawing the invitation will mean breaking off the friendship entirely.
burnspbesq
Shit. 4-4. Getting ready to vomit.
Charlotte wins. Denver streak (which was actually 25; they won their last six regular season games in 2012) ends.

@efgoldman: The Joshua Trees are moving into the Owens valley. It was too cold for them there 20 years ago, but now they are all the way up to Olancha. So much for the Great Basin climate zone, we are now the Mojave.

I was watching the Belmont this afternoon and was pretty disgusted by the mean remarks made by the owner of California what-ever when his horse didn’t win the third race of the triple Crown. He was completely ungracious in his remarks about the other owners. Must be a Republican…
raven
The Triple Crown drought continues and California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn doesn’t think it will end any time soon because of “cowards.”
Moments after California Chrome finished tied for fourth place at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Coburn delivered a harsh rebuke to Belmont winner Tonalist as well as the entire world of horse racing. Coburn fumed over the fact that rested horses who did not participate in all legs of the Triple Crown are permitted to compete against those who have made the grueling trek from Churchill Downs to Pimlico and finally on to Belmont Park.

@Mnemosyne: I did have this one friend, but she’s about the have a baby this month, so her travelling days are behind her for the time being.
PsiFighter37
@Mnemosyne: This is true. Unfortunately I haven’t gotten much details from his family, and I had to reach out after not hearing for a week to get any details. They also think that NYC was bad for his mental state, and (unfortunately) I was his best friend while he was here. I think that might limit the information I get.

@raven:
Honestly, I think he has a point. If you were doing hockey playoffs, would it be fair to bring in a team that had a month of rest and put them up against a team that only had a two-day break?
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Mnemosyne: They are separate races, aren’t they? Why should the rules be changed to make easier to have a Triple Crown winner?
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name):
Why have a Triple Crown if the point of the other two races is to bring in spoilers?
Omnes Omnibus (the first of his name)
@Mnemosyne: @efgoldman: It is a big deal because it is hard. They are separate races. It’s been this way for years. Why change it? And they aren’t spoilers; they are horses who the owners and trainers think have a good chance of winning that race.
I also do not approve of escorting people up Everest; either you can climb it or you can’t – I am agnostic on oxygen.
MattR
@efgoldman: @Mnemosyne: 7 figure bonus or not, IMO the Triple Crown is not supposed to be a contest. It is supposed to be an achievement that says you took on all comers and still won all three races, much like the Grand Slam in tennis or golf.

@lamh36:
And CNN frames the whole thing in terms of Republican talking points. Now *I* want a drink.

@MattR: Again, we agree on this. Nice examples. I was going to go with stuff from rugby, which isn’t always persuasive – the Triple Crown is like winning a Grand Slam in the Six Nations.

The Texas Republican party platform for 2016 looks like a winner:
Texas Republicans venerate human life, so kill ’em all slow and let ’em die screaming.
And of course it’s not enough to kill the adults — gotta kill the kids too:
Shorter Texas 2016 Republican platform: Die, die, die, everybody die! Kill you all, make you suffer!
Not just the kids ‘n the adults, but the entire human race:
Absolutely perfect. The perfect storm of evil + insanity. Everything we’ve come to expect from the great state of Texas.

@nancy darling: I think that John should move to Ventura. For some reason it fits his demeanor perfectly. Also it is between 72 and 78 almost every day of the year, or so it seems.

@PsiFighter37: I’m not sure I understand the connection between him being in a depression and your wanting to drop him from the wedding.
If you’re worried about a possible no show at the last minute, you could always arrange in advance for another friend to be on stand-by.
Otherwise, is there some reason you wouldn’t want him in your wedding?

@mclaren: Piffle.

@Phoebes in Santa Fe: He’s a whiner. Rules have been the same for many, many years. Seattle Slew faced new shooters. So did others.
Chrome broke badly, stumbled, & cut his foot right at beginning of race. That was probably it right there.
