Since there are people here who might consider this relevant to their interests, an Exclusive from NYMag‘s Vulture blog:
On Monday, the third season of Sherlock will become available for streaming exclusively on Netflix. The service will also stream Sherlock Uncovered, a set of three half-hour making-of specials following each episode, and Unlocking Sherlock, a one-hour behind-the-scenes feature about the making of the series. To mark the occasion, Vulture caught up briefly with executive producer Steven Moffat and his wife, producer Sue Vertue, who told us a rewatch could prove enlightening…
More, including a video clip on casting, at the link.
We’re so old & staid, last night we finally replaced our solitary near-vintage CRT television with a modestly sized flatscreen, so we look forward to a pleasant evening rewatching Cardcaptor Sakura DVDs. Netflix is my substitute for cable, so yes I am planning to (eventually) catch up with the Sherlock excitement…
What are y’all gonna be watching this evening?

Game of Thrones. Should be amazing.

Nothing. We gave up DirecTV after realizing the TV hadn’t been on all winter. Don’t miss it a damn bit.
And I’m having trouble seeing how this post feeds our Republi-rage.

Did anyone else find Cumberbatch’s Smaug rather a disappointment in the second bloatation of Jackson’s Hobbit? I really think Tolkien’s Smaug was more convincing and a damn sight less fond of sounding like Pop Psychology for the OCD Dragon.

Didn’t I already watch the 3rd season of Sherlock on Amazon? Granted, I paid for it, but with 7 people watching the per-person cost was quite reasonable.

Watching tonight’s Cosmos ep on global warming. “Controversial”, don’t ‘cha know. Murica, fuck yeah!

Bringing up Baby is on TCM, but I’ve seen it too many times. Third season of Sherlock was great (despite the naysayers). I love Mary Morstan.

@Morzer (0th of His PseudoName and Founder of the Walter Sobchak Peacekeepers): Interesting (I’ve not seen it yet), was it the delivery or the writing that seemed to be the real issue? I can rather like JLM’s approach to Sherlock (there was a bit in the last episode that seemed absolutely pulled from the The Boscombe Valley Mystery, only JLM didn’t actually growl) but much of the written bits drive me round the bend.

Speaking of television, Ann B. Davis who played Alice on “The Brady Bunch” died. That makes me sad. I loved her.

VEEP and Nurse Jackie. VEEP isn’t as good this year, so I’m kind of disappointed. I did, however, think the bagman in Iowa was teh awesome and I sooooooo want them to bring him back permanently. They brought him back for one episode but then got rid of him. Cuz he’s a moron. Which is why I loved him so much.
Nurse Jackie is in for a huge, and I mean HUGE fall. Perhaps Edie Falco will have the type of fall I wanted Carmella to have at the end of the Sopranos.
And speaking of Edie Falco, a few years ago I saw her here in NY in the audience for the Broadway play “Doubt.” She is gorgeous, just stunning, in person. It was a fun night. Colin Farrell sat in the seat right in front of my gay friend Jonathan and he (Jonathan) could not even watch the play he was so excited. We all went out for drinks afterwards to talk about the play and all he could talk about was Collin Farrell. He did not even notice the show.

@scav:
The writing was Jackson at his absolute worst: longwinded, “imaginative” in the sense of bodging together lame attempts at dialog, and generally turning the very tentative exploration by Bilbo of Smaug’s lair into something suspiciously like a melange of Temple of Doom and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but with dwarves added. I can see why Jackson’s pre-LOTR movie career went nowhere.
“Oh, you care about them!” is not a line that should be delivered by any self-respecting dragon.
Phylllis
Watching Heaven Knows Mr. Allison on Retro, but probably won’t make it to the end.
scav
@Morzer (0th of His PseudoName and Founder of the Walter Sobchak Peacekeepers): Oh dear. “Oh, you care about them!” is more than inept, it’s derivative, meta and arch. Middle Earth should stand alone.

We watch “Elementary” but I saw a few episodes of “Sherlock” on the plane to London, and liked it, so now I’ll need to add it to the Netflix queue.
Season 2 of “Orange is the New Black” will be out this coming week.

Enjoying an Anjie Fest on FX, but I will be watching Cosmos while I kill things in Azeroth. If I can finish this fricking work.

@Helen: YES ! Nurse Jackie ! I am so gonna miss Drs. Prentiss and Cooper, though. @gnomedad: YES ! Cosmos ! But tomorrow night on NatGeo.
God I love TV…

@scav:
Well, if I tell you that “Smaug” delivers this line as part of his realization that the dwarves (whom he spends an inordinate amount of time chasing through Middle Earth’s previously unknown Erebor Industrial Complex) and Bilbo might just have a connection with the Lake Men – and apparently decides to take off and burn Lake Town down largely because it will hurt Bilbo, I think you get some sense of how spectacularly stupid and implausible Jackson’s take on the Hobbit is.
And, by the way, Bard’s bow has apparently become some sort of anti-dragon ballista. One of many deployed as part of Lake Town’s aerial defenses.
I also might mention the elf-dwarf interracial romance subplot, but thinking about it makes me want to find a good meat-ax and set out for Jackson’s current location.

Loved Sherlock
Can’t believe that TV has changed to the point where we accept THREE episodes as a SEASON
Violet
@rikyrah: Hardly seems like a season. Maybe a short mini-series?
Morzer (0th of His PseudoName and Founder of the Walter Sobchak Peacekeepers)
@rikyrah:
Perhaps we should think of them as a seasoning instead?
Cckids
Where did you get Cardcaptor DVDs?

Jim Carey has nothing on the rubber faced actor that plays Holmes. He looks so unworldly weird in that role that I was surprised how life like he looked in a commercial he filmed with Leonard Nimoy.

Has anyone seen Aji ?
Anoniminous
“The Unexpected Journey” was a travesty and it sounds like “Desolation” is staying the course. The two films have grossed just under $2 billion, world-wide, so Jackson could give a damn what I think.
scav
@Long Tooth: Could it be because his imitation of Zachary Quinto is that good?
SixStringFanatic
Watching the Game of Seven. Tons of cliff-hanger potential.
WaterGirl
@rikyrah: I think shows like Sherlock and Bletchley Circle are more along the lines of shows like McBride or the Perry Mason movies, which were longer than an hour and there were a small number of them each year.

@raven: Google says
Feb 13just after midnight so technically Feb 14 was Aji’s last comment.Violet
@raven: @WaterGirl: I think this is Aji’s blog. Last post today.

@rikyrah: I stumbled on Sherlock via Netflix streaming and loved it. I’ve purposely avoided watching it on live tv in lieu of it’s release on Netflix. Glad I have Monday off.

@Violet: Was just coming back to edit my comment to include the link their webpage and email contact information. Yay.

@Helen:
She played the Mother Superior? Wow, now i’m jealous of you!

@gnomedad: So are conservative markets going to ‘accidentally’ run an hour long infomercial in its place?

@Anne Laurie: No – she was in the audience, not in the play.

The Spousal Unit, devout cheapskate that he be, is actually considering buying a BluRay player just so he can upgrade Sakura. We mutually love it that much. It’s the anime after which he first started taking classes in conversational Japanese…

@Anne Laurie: Lot’s of advantages to a blu ray player. Buy one that gets you internet. They also are backward compatible so most regular dvd’s fill the screen on an hdtv.

Cosmos and Veep. Mad Men is over for the year and the local PBS station is showing an episode of “Endeavour” which doesn’t impress me. It’s a prequel to the “Morse” series featuring Inspector Morse as a young man (Endeavour was his first name) and I couldn’t stand “Morse” either. I do love the spin-off, “Inspector Lewis”, though.

@gbear:
We need equal time for “nuh-UH!!” It’s only fair!

@raven: Yup, being able to stream my (our) vast Neflix queue directly to the tv (instead of craning to watch on a laptop screen together) is very much part of the equation for him. Especially now that the cathode-ray set died, and our tv is Roku-compatible…

TV tuner in PC hooked to TV means I can record anything and save it forever. No worrying about whether Netflix or Amazon has it. No having to pay for Netflix (although we do for other purposes). All recorded in high quality HD and not having to worry about any streaming irregularities. You could even do it for free with a good antenna, although I have cable.
Best entertainment purchase I ever made was the TV tuner.

Weird. We watched the 3rd season in its entirety on the PBS app on our iPad soon after the last show aired (in the US–I understand that it aired about a month earlier in the UK). It was up on the PBS app for quite a while (might still be up there?). The PBS app is absolutely free as well.
So, I’d say this Netflix thing isn’t exactly “exclusive”–unless from here on out it’s only available on Netflix. Especially if Amazon has it streaming as someone mentioned above. (Also, iTunes has it for download purchase . . .)

We went to WV Public Broadcasting’s weekly Mountain Stage with a cluster of friends from all over this end of the state. The live radio show had 4 bands on in a show that ran nearly 3 hours.
They edit into a 2 hour show broadcast in every state and 120 foreign countries. We’ve been going off and on for years. Tonight’s live show was 819th show, the host has misssed one performance in 25 years!
Go out to see some live music in your hometown, today!

AL, one can purchase a Sony Blu-ray/3D w/wireless for Netflix/Hulu/Amazon etc.. for about $60. The device can also be hardwired(ethernet cable) if location allows.
I have also installed on my computer HotspotshieldElite which allows me to watch the bbc in realtine or download for later viewing all of those beeb programs that end up on PBS. For $30/year it’s worth it to me.

Sherlock Series 3 (BBC) ended back in January.
Elementary is a joke – and that’s the nicest thing I can say.
This thread is bizarre.

Turn in your old fogey card. Many years ago we bought my mother a gen-u-wine Sony Trinitron TV, which I’m still watching because It. Will. Not. Die. And the speakers are much better than any flat screen’s.
Now, skeedaddle off my lawn!

FYWP for eating my comment last night. I’m sure it was clever and witty but now I don’t remember it.
M.C. Simon Milligan
Watched Star Trek: Into Darkness finally (thnks n’flix!). It was OK. Moved well but was a bit muddled and suffered from the modern CGI enabled “throw tons of shit on the screen” syndrome.
My major issue, though, is the plain fact that Ricardo Montalbon had chunks of actors like Cumberbatch in his stool. Not that Cumberbatch is bad, it’s just that Montalban was such an epic ham that lesser actors can only gamely gnaw on the crumbs of the scenery he ate whole, and that’s the kind of actor a role like Khan calls for. Kirk too really. tWoK is probably the finest example of ham-to-ham combat ever put on screen.

Loved the first two seasons of Sherlock. Thought the third was a major disappointment. If you want to watch the absolute best show on TV, watch Orphan Black. Last night’s episode was awwweeeeeessssssooooommmmmmmmmmme.
