Yeah maybe the ACA is polling well and she knows she loses votes if she’d say she vote against it. Over Christmas I went to the family my brother married into. Some birthers. I am the only liberal in the room. Before I could even get my coat off my brother’s wives father starts in on me about Obamacare. I listen to him rant for like 20 minutes. I honestly didn’t engage him cause what he was saying just didn’t make sense. I was like do you have the same plan? Yes. Same doctor? Yes. Are you paying more? Nope.
I am like I am paying almost $100 less for a better plan. That you spent an hour on the phone to clear things up and found NOTHING changed for you doesn’t make me feel sorry for you. Why are you not happy your daughter and grandchild have free preventative care. He didn’t seem to grasp what I was talking about.
Goblue72
That link should have had a trigger warning.
Tommy
@Goblue72: One of my clients sets up individual insurance plans for small businesses. I like working with him, but his politics are toxic. Rand Paul fan. I heard him rant endlessly about the ACA. How it would ruin his business. Funny thing, he has more work then he can handle. Of course I pointed this out to him but alas he can’t seem to make the connection.
Higgs Boson's Mate
@Tommy:
There is a rapidly growing segment of wingers that simply won’t believe anything that contradicts their
Limbaughed, Fox Newsified worldview. That man with whom you spoke wouldn’t believe you even though you were speaking from personal experience and you had no reason to lie to him. On the other hand, if Limbaugh, or Fox News or a wingnut email stated that Obama is actually a giant spider from Mars who’s hypnotized us all so that the rest of the giant spiders can come down and suck out all of our blood, he would take it as gospel truth. He’s one of those people who vote Republican even when doing so is against his own personal interest. He’s not alone.
Tommy
@Higgs Boson’s Mate: Generally speaking they at least listen to me, cause I don’t lie to them. I attempt to use facts. But the rage over Obamacare is off the charts. I tried to explain to him that his daughter, sitting right over there, has a Civil Service job with the DoD. Her health care is through the government and she isn’t complaining. She has open enrollment just like I now have. Where I can pick and choose my plan. Shouldn’t everybody have that? In fact your grand kid, that just graduated college can stay on their plan until she is 26. I kept on trying to explain all this to him, but alas it fell on deft ears.
Tommy
@Higgs Boson’s Mate: Oh one other thing. When I am at these family events almost everybody there is either active duty, has served, or works for the Air Force. Many of them used the GI Bill. I noted when McCain was running against Obama he was against expanding the GI Bill. He is like no, that can’t be true. I am like yes it is. You don’t even understand who you are voting for. I had to pull up Fox Noise to convince him I was telling the truth.
TG Chicago
I didn’t think Morrisey was so bad there. To me, the notable sin is that the Morning Joe crew took what was (according to Weigel) a GOP hit job and simply ran with it without checking for the unedited tape. How can those people possibly consider themselves to be journalists?
Villago Delenda Est
@TG Chicago:
Well, I’m judging them, and they’re not journalists. They’re hacks, they’re propagandizers, they’re the sort of scum we put to death after WWII.

I didn’t like Nunn’s answer. I’d still vote for her if I lived there though. I vote for DiFi every November she’s up and kick myself a little but in the scheme of things, even crappy Democrats are better than any Republican in the Senate (Joe Lieberman doesn’t count…he was worse).

Republicans Have Edge on Top Election Issue: the Economy
Democrats have advantage on Affordable Care Act and economic inequality
by Frank Newport May 19, 2014
PRINCETON, NJ — American voters rate the economy as the most important issue to their vote for Congress this year, and give the Republicans in Congress a slight edge over the Democrats as best able to handle it. Voters give four other issues lower, but still above-average, importance — the federal deficit, taxes, the Affordable Care Act, and income and wealth inequality. Voters see Republicans as better able to handle the first two, while Democrats have the edge on the latter two.

There are a fucking HALF MILLION PEOPLE IN GEORGIA that don’t have access to Healthcare because of the lack of expansion of Medicaid.
And her stupid ass can’t stand up for Obamacare?
fuck her.
the Conster
@Tommy:
The rage isn’t about their misunderstanding of what the provisions are in Obamacare. Obamacare is a proxy – a totem – that represents their impotence. There is no reasoning with them, because they didn’t reason themselves into their rage.
Frankensteinbeck
@Tommy:
Not quite what @the Conster said, but close:
If they can be walked through Obamacare not hurting them, but still rage about it hurting them, then their problem isn’t Obamacare. It’s something they don’t want to admit, even to themselves.
Librarian
@rikyrah: That’s what I thought. Landrieu, Hagan and Pryor can support Obamacare, but Nunn can’t? Do Georgians like being without health insurance?
flukebucket
I know that there are folks who did not have positive results from the PPACA but I have yet to meet one. When I am in a group of folks pissing and moaning about Obamacare I tell them that I pay $16 grand annually for coverage for my wife and me but that before the PPACA I paid $18,000. I got a better policy for a lower price. I then offer any of them the chance to tell about the negative effects it has had on them. I have yet to have anybody who actually had a bad experience personally. All of them have heard stories but so far nothing for them personally. The talk then normally turns to Benghazi.
flukebucket
@Librarian:
A huge contingency of Georgians despise anything at all to do with a Democrat and if you throw Black Democrat on top of it they would sacrifice their firstborn to go back to White Evangelical leadership. It just is what it is.
Frankensteinbeck
@flukebucket:
Hate. The current Republican Party is about hate, not self-interest. Some folks are filled with it. Some have a specific button the party is pressing. This is what happens when you play up to racism.
Goblue72
@rikyrah: Proof that the average American is dumber than dirt. GOP spends last 6 years doing everything they can to wreck the economy, so of course the voters think they are the preferred party on the economy.
Dumb. As. Dirt.
dww44
@rikyrah: Well, she’s the best chance we have for taking that Senate Seat that Saxby Chambliss stole from Max Cleland back in 2002. One of her 3 opponents in the Dem primary is Dr. Rad, a transplanted Georgian and a really really unabashedly progressive Democrat. Like him lots, but she’s our best hope. Saw part of an interview with MSNBC ‘s Joy Reid, and Nunn, was for her, amazingly deep into the policy and really quite supportive of the ACA, unlike her feel good TV ads.
She’s way better than anyone who’s gonna be her opposition in November, and, of them all, Karen Handel is about the most dangerous. I’ve gotten robocalls from Sarah Palin twice, and Rick Santorum, and Jan Brewer and, finally, from the home state, Erick Erickson. I hope there’s a 3 way run-off between Handel, Perdue, and Kingston and that they get to beat up each other lots more, so Nunn will have an opponent who’s been tainted in the voters’ eyes.
Right now, Nunn has some Republicans who remember her Dad with fondness and who are planning on voting for her. She has to bridge that divide. Give her some credit.
opiejeanne
My sister, raised to vote Republican and not to think critically about politics, signed up for the ACA at the urging of her RW daughter, because her health plan was offering her the choice of a huge price increase.
She pointed out with glee how little she will spend and what a good policy she got but at the same time repeats what the guy who helped her told her about how his business would be idle for months between enrollment periods,all while having more business than he can handle.
