Has Clive Bundy been offered free season tickets yet?

My boss, who is black, backs the Clippers over my Lakers any chance he can. He’s obnoxious about it, too. I can’t wait to see what he’ll have to say on Monday.
All seriousness aside, I’m smiling like a mofo right now. The Clipper curse continues.
the Conster
He doesn’t want her to be seen with blacks? Why do these ugly ass old white toads never look in the mirror? He’s a cross between Trump and Al Davis, with the charm of Sheldon Adelson. He’s lucky he’s got money because it’s all he’s got, and after Snoop’s diss, that may not be enough.
Roman
I think the Snoop is a bit angry – with some justification
Jacks mom
Another reason I’m a Lakers fan. What a fucking tool!
Heliopause
Beyond that, he sounds like a very befuddled old man. Other than not wanting his girlfriend to be photographed with black people I couldn’t make sense of anything he said. Kind of scary that senile racists run our society. And his girlfriend, jeezus: “You’re a horiible racist. [cooing] Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?” Gaack. Sorry I listened to that thing.

That Snoop dog is one eloquent s.o.b.
Amir Khalid
@the Conster:
The odd thing is, she herself — Stirling’s girlfriend — identifies as black. I have to wonder, what’s up with a man who is with a black woman but doesn’t want her associating with black people?
Cassidy
@Amir Khalid: Why is she still his girlfriend?
Richard Shindledecker
What he said!
Tokyokie
@Heliopause: I think Sterling’s girlfriend released the recording (Who else would have had it?), planned to get him to say something disgusting, then got him to make it the worst she could. So I don’t think she was soothing his wounded ego, she was egging the bastard on. And I’m guessing her status is now ex-girlfriend.
Amir Khalid
@Cassidy:
I wonder myself.

patton oswalt had a nice takedown as well: http://tinyurl.com/kc94867
“Secondly, I’m already starting to see people defend Don Sterling with the, “He’s not racist — his girlfriend is black and Mexican!” line of “reasoning.” I heard this shit said to defend Lou Dobbs (Latino wife) and John Derbyshire (Asian wife).
Does ANYONE but me feel like that’s EXTRA creepy — the “reasonable” white guy generalizing and debasing a race of people based on anecdotal evidence or cherry-picked statistics, who gets a pass because they’ve selected a minority they’ve deemed okay to fuck? By that reasoning, every slave owner who ever raped one of his slaves was as egalitarian as MLK.”
Jordan Rules
Apparently people have known for years about him. This may be the least disgusting story I’ve heard about his racism today. Yikes.
I wish the players on both teams would boycott, but then again I read Bill Rhodens “Million Dollar Slaves” years ago and know how unlikely it is. Sad shit.
And his self-hating girlfriend willing to debase herself…pathetic. This was a chess move on her part though, didn’t think she had enough self-awareness left for this.
So many interesting dynamics…
-Silver as the new commish
-CP3 as the head of the players union
-Buss and his ties to the org (the Clips pay rent to play at his spot, Sterling and Buss and hoops financial history)
-Pic with Magic being the one kicking off this tirade
Post-racial yall.
scav
@lurker dean: Combine that with his allegedly bringing women into locker rooms with showering players and making comments like “Look at those beautiful black bodies.” Guy’s a prince, clearly loose in his skin about the beauty of the male body, unashamed of admiring it vocally and supportive of women doing the same, real metrosexual, right? Or he sees people, including His women, His players, His games as objects subject to His mighty will and whim in all things.
khead
I’m not sure whether to go with a joke about Bundy or Marge Schott.
Richard Shindledecker
Actually I think it’s letting them off easily to call it racism. It’s male white supremacism – a cancerous vestige of the confederacy.
We really need a new WT Sherman to school these animals. Not on the horizon tho – too bad.
lurker dean
@scav: i hadn’t heard that stuff about the locker room – hopefully sterling gets all he deserves now that this latest from his GF has come out.
GregB
In his defense, I heard he once considered voting for Herman Cain.
Calming Influence
A lot of the press seem to be trying to get some sort of response from black players and celebs; they ought to be asking other NBA owners whether they’re cool with Sterling’s attitude and whether they like being linked to him.
John O
I wonder how Sterling votes?
Cassidy
@scav: I just saw 12 Years a Slave recently and that was eerily similar.
gene108
@the Conster:
I’m not a fan of everything Davis did, especially with moving the Raiders to LA, but the man did hire the first Latino and first African-American head coaches in the NFL.
For all his faults, I would not lump Davis in with a bunch of racists.
gene108
I also think from a purely economic perspective firing Sterling as the owner of the Clippers would be a good move. The man has clearly shown very little interest in building a winning franchise and would rather lose 82 games, as long as the Clippers made him money at the end of the year.
Just for his 30+ years of incompetence as an owner, the rest of league should force him to step down.
gbear
@Calming Influence:
I want someone to ask Justice Roberts – with Justice Sotomayor in the room.
Every Roberts decision is proven to be the wrong decision within about 20 minutes of the decision going public.
Edit: this comment is in moderation? What the hell caused that?

Did all old white men get together this week and decide to let out their inner racist? Sounds like a conspiracy to me.
Anya
@Amir Khalid: Hey Amir, how has Obama messed with your life today? Are the streets all blocked. Are the Malaysians complaining?
I am half kidding of course.
As for your question…t’s an old story that dates back to the time of slavery. White rich motherfuckers, as Snoop put it, have always been okay with raping or having sex with black women and it never stoped them from oppressing them. But this particular dude seems to be warning his girlfriend that if she continues to hang out with blacks she’ll be preventing herself from being “perceived as either a Latina or a white girl.”
? Martin
A rational person would never consider that a racist would want to own an NBA team, but I guess for most greed and self-promotion rank at least slightly higher than the racism bit.
Calming Influence
What do you want to bet that Sterling holds a press conference to defend himself, and he starts it with “I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,…”
Ruckus
@rk:
We didn’t. Or I may have missed the memo. It is a big club and sometimes the notice of the meetings doesn’t get out soon enough.
But then lumping all us old white men into one category sounds vaguely familiar. Where have I heard something that sounds like this before?
Jordan Rules
@? Martin: Naw, he owns those black bucks and loves it. Its more than greed with this guy.
rikyrah
uh huh
uh huh
scav
@? Martin: A rational person might also remember that racists were perfectly happy to own plantations and the bodies to keep them going. They’re just skipping the technical owning of bodies now, however much they act as though they still did.
rk
@Ruckus:
I jest, I jest. Why some of my best friends are old white men!
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Does Sterling still supply that powdered soap in the showers, or do the Clips get to enjoy liquid soap since they’ve moved to Staples Center?
James E. Powell
@efgoldman:
It would serve the sumbitch right if his AA players (most of the team) refused to play the next game. They won’t, but a man can dream…
There are things they could do other than refuse to play.
gbear
@efgoldman: Me too!
Mnemosyne
@scav:
I really hope someone made a report about that, because I’m pretty sure the state of California would consider that sexual harassment. (Yes, guys, a hetero dude can sexually harass other hetero dudes. Because it’s about power, not sex.)
And as for the people wondering why Sterling’s girlfriend is with him knowing he’s a racist — he’s in his 80s, she’s in her 20s. I doubt she’s with him for his wonderful personality.
Omnes Omnibus
Snoop was quite eloquent.
Ruckus
@scav:
Sort of looks to me like the major difference is the number of zeros involved in the transactions.
Ruckus
@Omnes Omnibus:
He does have a way with words.
Jebediah, RBG
Well said, Mr Snoop
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: Have to agree. After the frustration of seeing all these creeps letting their racist freak flags fly recently, I also found watching it to be quite cathartic.
Edit: Watched it more than once.

Instead of putting it on the players to respond, why not a boycott by the fans?
gingko biloba
Is it just me, or was Snoop Lion quoting NWA’s “Fuck tha Police”? Almost word for word. West Coast representing

@Anya:
I’m okay as long as the Obamas don’t decide to take a ride on the LRT. (Now, if it were Joe Biden visiting …)

@Mnemosyne: And as for the people wondering why Sterling’s girlfriend is with him knowing he’s a racist — he’s in his 80s, she’s in her 20s. I doubt she’s with him for his wonderful personality.
Not only is she in her 20’s, she is, to these eyes anyway, quite a babe. He isn’t terribly attractive, and his personality, as we see, is pretty much an asshole. Which she had to have known about. Now I wasn’t born yesterday, and (not to be sexist, here) I’m pretty sure what draws her to him, but strategically, this thing doesn’t make sense. Does payday come earlier as a result of this?
WaterGirl
@Gin & Tonic: If you are right… maybe it just wasn’t worth it, no matter what the (hoped for) payday might have been.
Violet
@Gin & Tonic: Is it clear who made the recording? Did she make it? Maybe it was a big FU to him. Destroy him on the way out the door. Maybe she hopes she’ll get some reality show role after this.
Frankensteinbeck
@Gin & Tonic:
Everyone’s different. Sleeping with him for money may have seemed like a great trade, even if he’s a jerk. Or it may have just stopped being a worthwhile trade, which is why she ratted him out. Who knows? It’s her business.
Comrade Mary
Love Snoop, but have you seen what Lebron James said?
Kobe: “I couldn’t play for him.”
Frankensteinbeck
I’m glad that this kind of open, undeniable racism is getting public attention. Conservatives have been edging around the point. I want the politically insulated shocked into understanding that racism is alive and ugly and phrases like ‘fiscal conservative’ really mean ‘I hate black people.’
mellowjohn
a rich, old white guy is racially insensitive? i’m shocked, i tells ya, shocked!
for many, if not most, of these guys, owning an NBA/NFL/MLB franchise is a massive ego trip (just like the much, much younger girlfriend).
and what they put on the court/field – whether it’s made up of blacks, whites, latinos, or trained seals – is just a product. it’s something to be used, used up, and replaces as soon as the cost of upkeep exceeds the cost of replacement.
Hungry Joe
The Clippers started out in San Diego. They sucked pretty hard, so Sterling opened his wallet … and put up billboards all over the city, featuring his mug, saying “I will make you proud of the Clippers.” Then he moved them to L.A. So we were rid of him — which did make me feel a little proud, I guess.
elftx
Seems like this is not the first conversation of this type between them.
Would love to know who it is that “calls him” when she posts these pics to that site. And yeah he and whoever ‘calls’ him is a pos.
skjellyfetti
I’m not very good with ambiguity or nuance. What exactly was he trying to say there?
Cassidy
@Mnemosyne: Heh. Maybe I wasn’t so wrong in comparing dating and prostitution.
Gin & Tonic
According to the LA Times, it seems that the current and still Mrs. Sterling doesn’t quite approve of the girlfriend and Mr Sterling’s spending habits on her. It seems that the girlfriend has done fairly well (a Ferrari, a couple of Bentleys and a $1.8M apartment) and Mrs Sterling is seeking the return of some of what she alleges is community property.
I have a feeling this will get more interesting quickly, particularly for the attorneys.
Omnes Omnibus
@Cassidy: Yes, you were.
Cassidy
@Omnes Omnibus: Sure, keep telling yourself that. I’m sure those lovely young lady’s, many years your junior, were just stricken by your charm and wisdom.
Omnes Omnibus
@Cassidy: If you can’t differentiate between dating and setting up a mistress, that’s really your problem.
another Holocene human
@efgoldman: whoa, worst in sports and no love for “the name will never change” Dan Snyder?
Altho truly, so many worthy candidates
Mnemosyne
@Cassidy:
Apparently you and Don Sterling have the same trouble understanding what the difference is.
xenos
@Gin & Tonic:
There is often a happy ending to this sort of situation. Tracing community property going to mistresses and such results in some honest and lucrative work for a nice energetic practitioner.
Paul in KY
@Cassidy: A billion reasons….
