Someone threw a shoe at Hillary last night while she was speaking at a Scrap Recycling Industries event in Vegas.
[I was going to embed the video here, but I can’t figure out how to turn off auto-play, and I hate fucking auto-play, which should be outlawed. So click the link if you want to see it.]
At first, she thought it was a bat, which explains the duck-and-circle maneuver. But after she figured out she was the target of a GWB-style shoe barrage, she handled it with aplomb:
Is that somebody throwing something at me?” Clinton asked, putting her right hand above her eyes to cut the glare of lights from the stage at Mandalay Bay
“Is that part of Cirque du Soleil?” Clinton quipped, prompting laughter from the audience.
“My goodness, I didn’t know that solid waste management was so controversial,” she added, referring to what she was talking about when the protester took action around 1:52 p.m. “Thank goodness she didn’t play softball like I did.”
The audience of more than 1,000 people attending the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries’ annual convention applauded Clinton’s gumption and some stood, giving her a standing ovation.
Anyone who predicted that Clinton would run away from President Obama’s record if she’s gearing up for a 2016 campaign would find little evidence of that in her response to audience questions after the speech. She consistently praised the administration’s handling of current issues.
Also, it sounds like the woman who threw the shoe is a garden-variety kook:
The Secret Service didn’t release information about the papers the protester threw. But an attendee handed a reporter a piece of paper that was apparently thrown by her and it appeared to be a copy of a Department of Defense document labeled confidential and dated August 1967, The Associated Press reported. It referred to operation “Cynthia” in Bolivia.
Clinton was 20 in 1967; she probably wasn’t involved in the Bolivian Army operation to capture Che Guevara. But who knows, right?
Speaking of kooks, Rep Louie Gohmert appeared on Faux News last night to help host and Defender of the White Megyn Kelly spin Gohmert’s persecution of AG Eric Holder as black-on-white racial mau-mauing. If you’re masochistically inclined, you can see the clip here. This still captures the tone:
Does a photo of Gohmert exist where he doesn’t look like a slack-jawed nitwit? If it does, I haven’t seen it.

I know you were not expecting an answer, but the answer is “no”. I won’t click on the link to see if he sounds like a slack-jawed yokel, but it would not surprise me one bit if he does.

Even Megyn Kelly couldn’t swallow O’Reilly’s ‘There must be some disadvantages to a woman president’ speech. That was hilarious to watch. Is there a hierarchy of levels of bigotry among FOX talking heads?
Betty Cracker
@NotMax: This is tagged as an open thread, so no worries. If it turns out that the plane is miles below the surface, will they attempt to recover the data recorder only and leave the debris / bodies where they lay? Or will they attempt to haul it up? Seems like the latter would be a tall order at that depth, but I don’t know much about deep water salvage…
Betty Cracker
@Frankensteinbeck: I missed that. I saw a clip of O’Reilly’s freak-out about Colbert the other day, and was again amazed that anyone watches that crabby, smug old fuck with something other than mockery in mind. I’m glad once again you’re kicking the bastard’s ass in book sales!

And he’s from Texas my home state. At least not my district but still I understand Texans elect wingers but at leat they could elect ones that are somewhat articulate and not a complete bozo.

To be fair, screen caps of someone talking always makes them look like a slack-jawed idiot. OTOH, you can tell Gohmert is a slack-jawed idiot just by reading what he says, direct quotation is known to have a liberal bias.
donnah
Republicans’ photos always show their true selves, whether they be slack-jawed idiots, egg-sucking dogs, or evil murdering monsters. I mean, have you ever seen a photo of Cheney when he didn’t look like an evil murdering monster? The camera doesn’t lie. Like he does. heh.
NotMax
@Betty Cracker
Strictly speculation, but expect the remains will be left where they are. Won’t be much in the way of bodies to recover. If the fuselage sank mostly intact, the pressure as it sank would have ruptured it (and that causes bodies to flash burn, though it seems counter-intuitive). If it broke up on impact, the pressure at resting depth would crush and mangle the bodies regardless.

@NotMax: I cant wait until they push the Bluefin too far, then lose it. Then they’ll get a sub to search for the Bluefin, until that one commits Harry Carry at 14K feet. NOAA will then commission a better sub to look for the sub that was trying to recover the Bluefin that was searching for wreckage. And in an incredbie stroke of luck, they’ll find Jimmy Hoffa.
Fuzzy
@NotMax: At this point, all the relatives should be taken to the ocean site and wreathes thrown on the sea. These folks will never be recovered and any search mission will take years. It is not news.

@NotMax: I got moderated, but there’s another story on that site in which Australia is saying the pings aren’t black boxes.
Elizabelle
@NotMax:
That’s interesting, if gruesome. I am hoping they will be able to figure out which pilot was at the controls, whether both or either was disabled.

Megyn Kelly is very pretty, but putting her next to a troglodytic cretin like Gohmert really puts her over the top. Sigh. If only she weren’t evil…

@Frankensteinbeck: Saw that your kid’s book is #1 on Amazon. We’re #1! We’re #1!
That is so awesome. Remind me what age group that book is for? I threw it in my shopping cart (save for later) when it first came out, thinking it would be a good gift for a niece or nephew, but now I don’t recall the age group. My nieces/great nieces/great nephews range from 2yrs to 40yrs, so surely it will be right for someone!
NotMax
@Elizabelle
Yeah, it is sort of gruesome; submariners are well aware that a severe hull rupture or crushing at great depth (as opposed to an irreparable hole more slowly filling a sealed off compartment with water) causes an intense blast of incinerating heat from friction and the crew will likely succumb to that before drowning.
cleek
there is nothing her record that even hints at the notion that she is to the left of Obama on anything. people are deluding themselves if they think she would be any kind of progressive pony-bearer.
NotMax
@NotMax
That could have been worded more clearly. Make it: “will likely succumb to that rather than drowning.”
Not deliberately trying to make the thread depressing.

Can you explain the physics of this? Not seeing it. Friction between what? Is it the metal grinding together, such that the heat is generated starting at your feet? Or somehow the air gets heated (cant see this happening as water fills the compartment almost instantly). Curious about this.
Edit: Or is this just compression (thus heating) of the air due to the water pressure?
Bobby Thomson
@Just One More Canuck: I guess he finally found a woman of less discriminatin’ tastes.
ericblair
@Punchy:
That’s my guess: like atmospheric entry, the heat is mostly due to compression of air in the shock wave. Would want to know the definitive answer.
NotMax
@Punchy
Your term is a better description than mine*: compression. The air would be almost instantly brought to the same pressure of the water, with a concomitant spike in temperature. The same massive change in pressure also, of course, affects anything in the space, essentially making death near instantaneous

I expect Hillary will handle her 2016 Republican opponent with as much skill, poise, and good humor as she handled this incident.
Betty Cracker
@cleek: Agreed: I think Clinton and Obama are pretty much identical, policy-wise, and there’s no evidence she would be leftier than Obama. What I was referring to is the fear I’ve seen expressed that Clinton would run away from Obama’s record a la Al Gore and Bill Clinton, maybe triangulating from the right on foreign policy by claiming Obama should have been tougher on Russia and Syria or criticizing the administration for the bungled ACA rollout or something like that. Haven’t seen any evidence of that either, though it could certainly happen during the heat of an actual campaign. I think it would be a mistake.

You can still hear the Chicago in Hillary Rodham Clinton’s voice.

There you go, casting aspersions on Louie’s asparagus.

No. There is not a picture where Gohmert does not look like a slack jawed nitwit.

@Linnaeus: I’ve often noticed that when people are mad or stressed out, their native accent is more pronounced. My hubby is from Buffalo and has lived down here in FL for much longer than he lived up there, but when he’s pissed, you can hear that Upstate loud and clear.

Um, we all know Obamacare is basically a Republican proposal from the 90’s. But remember what left-wing healthcare proposal that alternative was devised to stop?

Don’t give Bob in Portland any more ideas. He’s bad enough as it is.
Betty Cracker
@Fair Economist: I don’t think we can use their attempts at healthcare reform as an apples-to-apples comparison of either Clinton’s or Obama’s leftward lean: Obama applied the lessons learned from the failed Clinton healthcare initiative, which is why his actually passed despite an unhinged, disloyal opposition that was/is fully prepared to see their constituents DIE to deny Obama a victory.

Well, I got a review from a 10 year old thanking me for not talking down to him, and a review from a 60 year old saying that he and his 6 year old granddaughter are reading it together, so… apparently it’s pretty flexible in age range! I think most of my fans are adults, but the market folks are certainly giving me no shortage of positive feedback from actual teens.
Amir Khalid
@Betty Cracker:
They’ll want to recover as much as possible, because what’s left to investigate but the wreckage? It doesn’t seem like there a serious hope of recovering much from the bottom of the sea, though; those three miles are a hell of a long way down
Elizabelle
Saw a clip of the Vegas shoe thrower on TV this morning.
She looks like an extra from Game of Thrones. Long white hair, maybe a wig, maybe not.
I was surprised to learn Hillary Clinton is allegedly getting $250,000/speech. Really?
Elizabelle
@Frankensteinbeck:
Congrats, congrats, congrats.
And Mr. O’Reilly is always #2.
Amir Khalid
Also, we seem to be hearing one thing from Tony Abbott and another from Air Chief Marshall (ret.) Angus Houston, who’s heading the Indian Ocean search effort. I hope this gets sorted out.

@Elizabelle:
Former Secretaries of State with star power like Hillary aren’t all that common.

It would be odd is Clinton tried to put space between herself and Obama. They’ve always been very similar on policy and outlook. They’re socially liberal, business friendly, non-confrontational, professional centrists. Two peas in a pod, policy-wise.

@Betty Cracker:
Obamacare passed primarily because he had a filibuster-proof Senate majority and Clinton didn’t. Secondarily, he got a lot less opposition from the left (ironic given than his proposal was considerably further to the right.) But however you slice it, it’s fact that Hillary led and pushed very hard for a proposal considerably to the left of Obamacare. On that issue we know, for sure, she’d like to be considerably to the left of current policy.
Betty Cracker
@Fair Economist: Obama would like to be considerably left of current policy and has said so. I think he’s dealing with political realities, and HRC would have to as well.

Edit 2: I see… Kindle sale. I tried to look for this in iBooks. No luck – is your book not even available in iBooks?
drkrick
Given their positions on AUMF in 2002 and on Syria last year, I’d call HRC more of a hawk than Obama. On domestic policy I’d agree they’re very, very close to identical. The difference between their health care proposals has a lot more to do with their reads of what was gettable than what was preferable. The fact that Clinton did such a poor job of getting that right is part of what worries me about her as President.

The notion that the airplane hull survived impact with the sea is ludicrous. At the speeds involved, they may as well have run into a concrete wall as impacted water.
