I know it will never happen, but some day I’d like to check out CPAC in person.

There are those who will say “both sides do it, Netroots nations is just as crazy.” Nope, it’s not. There’s plenty of crazy people there, in my experience, but the inmates aren’t running the asylum.
Chris
The “both sides do it” crowd is even more deluded than the frakking CPACers.
Karmus
I respectfully disagree.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Chris: Amen. Rachel Maddow led off her special revisiting Iraq by noting that North Korea set off its test nuclear bomb in ’06, in spite of Gee Dumbya’s forcefulness, decisiveness, manliness and the most feckful foreign policy ever! I don’t expect John McCain or Lindsey Graham to shut up, but you’d think someone could remind Chuck Todd or Jane Harman.
Hunter Gathers
If Putin showed up at CPAC and beat the shit out of some black kids, they would make him their King.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
This guy is in the media, and Republican politics, largely because people watch his reality TV show, which as I understand it is a game show where the games are sort of loosely based on business-like situations. And of course his willingness to be the public face of racism.
ETA: … and I will happily pledge $25 to the Send DougJ to CPAC fund
Biff Longbotham
I’d go to CPAC too, Doug. Hot, cheap-datey winger women put lead in my pencil like nothing else.
Omnes Omnibus
You say that now, but in the morning you will be sober.

@Omnes Omnibus: Your internets, where would you like them delivered?
The Dangerman
CPAC or ipecac, same result.

i’d also love to go. i’d rather spend a couple days with those guys than, for example, the ted talk crowd.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Russia invaded Georgia while Dubya was President, and he did nothing. The village loathes Obama, and will spin everything to his detriment.
Omnes Omnibus
@Anne Laurie: I just got there first.

Why not? I’d be willing to chip in to a send-Doug-to-CPAC 2015 fund.

@Hunter Gathers: If Putin showed up at CPAC, he’d suck all of the oxygen out of the room and have a mile long bunch of crypto-fascists lined up to get his autograph.

I am also in for the fund. No promises on bail money or therapy bills, though.
Gex
The minority outreach panel at CPAC
They are NOT interested. No surprise there.
ruemara
No you wouldn’t. I doubt even the attendees of CPAC really want to be at CPAC. It’s like a convention for foot fungus.
NotMax
Unless you have a tattoo of Obama on your forehead, save up some vacation days (or better yet, sick days) and go.
Alison
Totally OT and maybe a stupid question but do they have PO boxes or something similar in Australia? SORRY WHO KNOWS I’ve never left the country and maybe they would think it was some weird American thing like private health care and bacon lollipops and wev.
kindness
We need to start a collection to send Doug to next year’s CPAC. He’s a braver man than me for wanting to go.
Frankensteinbeck
This could not be more crucial and wise. We have a handful of paranoid purists. We even have another handful of folks who freak out over some pet issue. The GOP’s paranoid purists RUN THE PARTY. They dominate the primaries, and have kicked out ‘moderate’ assholes again and again, until the non-insane-just-mean-spirited-shits Republicans are too scared to buck the crazy wing even when they try to jettison the country with defaults.
You have to nutpick liberals to find the crazy. Crazy is the official GOP plank.
srv
A republican president will never have to deliver because it will take a generation to undo Obama’s legacy
Ash Can
I’d chip in not just to help send DougJ to CPAC but to finance an enormous bowl of oatmeal and stack of potato pancakes for his breakfast there, so that he can unleash an enormous fart during Ted Cruz’s speech.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
MSNBC has Robert Costa standing in front of what looks and sounds like the CPAC dance party, and the poor bastard looks for all the world like a seventies game show host on really bad film

There are two dominant themes at DailyKos, and these two themes do indeed “run” that asylum: 1. President Obama is just simply stooopit and naive, and 2. President Obama is actually a Trojan Horse for Wall St and the Military Industrial Complex and he’s been playing Democrats all these years in order to do his masta’s biddings.
When looking at the facts of the incredible level of accomplishment in President Obama’s time in office, especially with the most obstructionist Congress ever…by far, both of these themes are equally as crazy as anything said at CPAC.
Alison
@MikeJ: Yeah, guess I could have Googled but I sometimes I feel weird about typing dumb questions in. Like the NSA is gonna email me a screenshot with “lol yr stupid” on it.
Thanks tho :P

@rda909:
But that asylum isn’t the party. Obama polls very well within the Democratic Party. Our nuts have their soap boxes they shriek from. They are still a tiny fringe. The GOP’s nuts are their party.
MikeJ
@Frankensteinbeck: Most of the crazy people in the Republican party hated McCain and Romney, yet the sanest candidates still won their primary.
Of course the fact that people who were that bug-fuck crazy were the sanest doesn’t say much for the less crazy part of their party.

@Frankensteinbeck: “But that asylum (DailyKos) isn’t the party.” Thankfully, yes. But as I was pointing out, “the crazy” does indeed run Netroots Nation, and that’s what I responding to in this post.

@rda909:
That stuff isn’t nearly as bugfuck insane as the shit the drooling wing nuts believe. Saying Obama is too accommodating of Wall Street or the MIC is an assertion that can be supported with actual factual evidence, even if it’s a dramatic embellishment. The lefties who rail on and on about it aren’t unhinged from reality, they’re just unrealistic pony wishing nitwits about it. Wing nuts believe things that are completely made up. They believe in “up is down” and “the sky is purple” level things. Thy shouldn’t be allowed out of padded rooms without supervision. And they’re the GOP’s fucking base. Our cranks are mostly lucid, if not grounded, and are an ignored fringe.

I thought the CPAC loons wanted to shut down the U.S. Treasury and end the scourge of paper fiat currency in favor of gold coinage.
And, no, nothing said at Kos even compares in craziness to what you hear at CPAC. The CPAC people believe the CIA teleported Obama to Mars in the 1980s.

Frankensteinbeck
@MikeJ:
Deceptive. Romney won for the same reason Tea Party senators lost normally safe seats. His competition was wildly incompetent. Romney was a mediocre organizer hobbled by MBA ideology. People like Gingrich and Santorum had no campaign staff. Romney won because he was the only candidate who could tie his shoes, not because of a popularity contest.
rda909
@Turgidson: “Saying Obama is too accommodating of Wall Street or the MIC is an assertion that can be supported with actual factual evidence” Ahhhh…no. No, it can’t. The exact opposite is true. I do understand how hard that is for privileged “progressives” to understand though, since it’s been the dominant story pushed by blogs such as DailyKos, and the media’s billionaire owners are happy to push in order to “divide and conquer” President Obama’s support. No president in any of our lifetimes has done more to slow down their complete takeover of the American Experiment.
I agree with you completely about this though:
“Our cranks…are an ignored fringe.”
DailyKos and “progressive” blogs have very little influence, thankfully, although it sure would wouldn’t hurt to have their support as we Obamabots continue to fix things and try to win midterms. But alas, we keep being subjected to the Obama=stooge, or Obama=Trojan Horse themes that dominate “progressive” blogs. Again, I was simply responding to a line in this post.

I’ve got a love/hate relationship with the site. I think they guys over at the elections page are pretty good poli nerds and have great links. Even some of the front pagers on the main site have decent diaries.
But those commentators and diarists on the side are batshit f*ng crazy.
David Koch
Well the inmates are running the NN asylum, they’re just not as crazy.
That said, surely you remember when Cole wanted to burn down the Internets after the way NN attacked Dan Pfeiffer. Or looney toon Dan Choi and Hamsher debasing the conference with their self immolation in 2011 and 2010.
David Koch
@Turgidson:
He supports the MIC, that’s why he ended the war in iraq. that’s why he refused to invade Syria. That’s why he didn’t bomb Iran. That’s why he fought AIPAC, the media, and the neo-cons tooth and nail to reach a deal with Iran. That’s why we’re leaving Afghanistan. That’s why he ended DADT.
he’s so accommodating of WS that’s why he reversed the Bush tax cut for the rich and ended the student loan racket, passed the consumer financial protection bureau, the credit card accountability act, the Volcker rule, and Dodd-Frank.
but do carry on with your conspiracy theory
NobodySpecial
@David Koch: Actually, Congress did most of that. Especially DADT, anything budgetary, and the Volcker rule. Remember? Obama can’t just wave his hands and make things happen, that’s Congress’s job. Lords know you’ve run that little line long enough.

@David Koch: Listen, I’ll stack my O-Bot cred up against anyone, but that sutff has to be balanced against slow-walking out of Afghanistan, slow-walking Gitmo, keeping indefinite detention/military tribunals, the drone war, putting CCPI on the table, Larry Summers and Tim Geithner…
Now, here’s the thing: there’s a lot of that stuff that Obama just plain couldn’t do. There’s a lot of that stuff that it unrealistic to ever expect him to WANT to do. But it IS a rational criticism to say he’s a little too wedded to existing financial/national security institutions. In many ways, that’s exactly what got him elected, a black liberal Democrat wasn’t going anywhere if he couldn’t convince the midwest that he wasn’t going to remake the world. And a lot of times, it’s an admirable trait; if he was really willing to go to war with those institutions, he coulda nationalized the banks, frog-marched Paul Wolfowitz, etc. I don’t think that was wise policy, so I’m glad that he didn’t do it…but you gotta take the bad with the good.
kindness
Well then, there is odd agreement in BJ land.
We need to have a side tab to create the Send DougJ to CPAC Fund. And being that it’ll be a year away it would be about the right amount of time to actually build it up.
I think we can address what stipulations that the funds will bring as well, but let us not go overboard. We don’t want one of ours kicked out before they even get through the front door. I do however think the humor of possible stipulations should be mined and bandied about to milk this for every bit of fun it could possess.
Paul in KY
@kindness: I know we could get plenty of humour out of that. I would contribute.

The April Fools article references an article at exopolitics.blogs.com.

Turgidson
@David Koch:
The fuck? I’m an unapologetic OBot and I think he’s the best president we’ve had in decades, and I think, eventually, when the dust settles, the popular consensus will move that way too. But you can look at who Obama appointed to various posts (people with neoliberal/Rubinite backgrounds) and the FACT that he, rhetorically at least, drank the austerity kool-aid at the worst possible time for our economy, the FACT that he intervened in Libya and surged in Afghanistan, and other bits of evidence her and there, and assert that he’s too nice to banksters and too willing to deploy American military force. There’s no conspiracy there at all. I think the lefties who rant and rant and rant about that shit are stupid and unrealistic and do more harm to their supposed causes than good, but I don’t think they’re barking mad.
I disagree, vigorously, with the people calling him a corporate stooge/sellout/DINO, whatever. Which was obvious from my post if you actually read it carefully. But I also completely disagree with the “both sides do it”-type comments about the lefty base being just as unhinged as the righty base. Not fucking true, and not even fucking close. That was the only point I was making.
cp
A few years ago, Sadly No! sent Leonard Pierce to CPAC undercover in the guise of a lobbyist for the “American Milk Solids Council”! Here’s the first installment. The whole thing is comedy gold, and I’d love to see what DougJ could do with a similar scenario.
Turgidson
@rda909:
See my post above this one. Of course there is factual evidence of Obama being more accommodating of those lobbies/institutional powers than liberals might want, and probably expected when he was elected. It’s not a loony conspiracy theory. I fully agree with you on the merits of those complaints and the lack of perspective of the complainers, but the complaints are qualitatively totally different from the completely batshit lunacy that most of the other party’s ENTIRE BASE believes. All I meant to accomplish was to push back on the “both side’s cranks are equally crazy” idea, which I completely disagree with. I don’t even think the commentors at dailykos (of course, there are some standouts who are way out there, but in general) can hold a candle to the shit that spews forth from ELECTED GOP OFFICIALS like Bachmann, Gohmert, Broun, and on and on, on the batshit spectrum, much less the knuckledraggers who vote these freaks into office.
