Commentor Lahke reminded me — over the holidays, I asked about doing another Book Chat group-reading. Executive decision, next Monday, January 20th, at 9pm EST, I’m going to start talking about the first few chapters of Mark Lebovitch’s This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral—Plus, Plenty of Valet Parking!—in America’s Gilded Capital. Anyone wants to can hate-read along with me.
Suspect we’ll be bored with that chew-toy after a couple or three weeks, and then I’m going to move on to Elizabeth Cline’s Overdressed: the Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion. Which is not about getting dressed up or picking out styles — as Katha Pollitt puts it, “Overdressed does for T-shirts and leggings what Fast Food Nation did for burgers and fries.”
Nine o’clock may be a little early for West Coat readers, but I don’t wanna keep any Easterners up past their bedtime. Next Monday is a holiday (MLK Day) for at least some of us, so it’s probably as good a test as any to see if we need to switch to a different day or time.
Any questions?

Will there be a test? And, if so, how much does it count toward our final grade?
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack: Read the god damned syllabus. It’s all there. Jesus fuck.
cokane
why torture yourself and read the town? it’s not like there’s any substance to the book

@Omnes Omnibus:
You’re mean. That’s why I sit in the back and never “contribute” in class.

Uploaded and read the first chapter to “This Town” on my iPad but not sure I care enough to go further.

@Mike in NC:
It’s a terrible book. Smarmy, smug, self-important dicks talking about each other — the whole junior high thing without the youth & the raging hormones.
Yatsuno
No haz book or reading device to get said book. I haz fail.
Steeplejack
@Yatsuno:
You can download the Kindle or Nook app to your computer and read the book that way (unless you’re using Linux).

Thanks, Anne! Reminder that if you’re downloading or ordering it from Amazon, click through to your account from this page so John gets a few pennies.
Which reminds me, I have a question about how that works. Does John get a flat amount whenever I shop with Amazon through BJ, no matter how much or how little I spend — or does he get a percentage of the purchase? Not that it matters to me either way, I’m just curious.

9 pm (8 here) is past my bed time. Also, my nappy time is from 1-2:30 in the afternoon.

So I’m confused. Yes, for some Monday is a holiday, but *Tuesday*, the morning after the late-night read (yes, my bedtime is around 21:30) is still a get-up-early-dammit day. Where’s the bennie of Monday being a holiday? Or is that just me?
