Yesterday I wrote about the lack of good feeds for Maddowblog or Steve Benen’s writing. A little bird sent them to me:
Also, the issue I mentioned with being unable to cut/paste from the New York Times is, oddly, only for Windows 8 and Chrome.
This is an open thread.

Back at work after a 10 day vacation. Re-entry is a bitch!

Can anyone tell me how RSS feeds work in Safari? Last time I looked into it, it seemed that Safari couldn’t handle RSS feeds, so I have never used them.
But, damn, the maddowblog is so annoying since the redesign that it definitely provides some incentive for trying this!

Immediately after I read your bit about not being able to cut and paste from the NYT site, I went over and cut and pasted just fine. Course I’ve got a Mac running Firefox, but it worked in Safari, too.
Betty Cracker
I can cut and paste from the NYT just fine — running Chrome on Windoze. I’m a subscriber; I wonder if that makes a diff?

@WaterGirl:
You used to be able to handle RSS feeds in Safari. But it was buggy and never worked well. The Mountain Lion release removed that feature.

Direct TV is dropping the Weather Channel as of midnight today. I guess Comcast-NBC wanted to charge too much.
Anyway the folks at Weather Channel periodically remind viewers to contact Direct TV to keep them on the satellite provider.

@WaterGirl:
Safari no longer has an rss reader as part of it. You can use either a stand alone app or a web based one like feedly.

Now that I have several of the cool mobile devices, I want to again start using a desktop (that would not be on a desk). For many years I have been laptop only, using externals to supplement storage.
Since I have been away from this type of equipment, I have no idea what the state of the tech is. My needs are managing a rather large music library and now a growing video collection. And, like everyone else, I stream from all the usual suspects.
I swear I will start online gaming, but quite frankly, I might never make the time (the last game I played/owned was Myst II). So, high end gaming abilities can be purchased some other time.
Since for the first time in many years, I am paying medical insurance premiums (and happy to do that) I need to keep my costs as low as possible.
Y’alls insight would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at the NewsMax headline list, I see that Christie appears to have lost that set of lunatics. Of course, now that Dick Morris has weighed in, it appears that Christie will ultimately survive this.

@Keith G: Music and video of course means storage. I’d recommend a desktop with two drives, a relatively small (128 GB would be fine) SSD for the OS and your applications, and a 2 or 3 TB magnetic HD for all of your data. If your video collection starts to fill the latter, start plugging in USB drives. For anything except for 4K video, USB should be fine.
For light gaming, the GPUs built into current-generation CPUs are actually reasonable. If you think you will want to get into something heavier, make sure that your system has at least one free PCIe slot (preferably an x16 slot) and that the power supply for the system can deal with an extra 50-100 W of load associated with a mid-range discrete GPU board.

@gene108: Since I have an antenna, I don’t have the Weather Channel but do have Weather Nation. Weather.com and Wunderground provide me with more accurate information than Weather Nation. I’m surprised that Direct TV is supporting Weather Nation when I can watch it for free.

Ever since they moved Benen to Maddow…it has fucking sucked!
There were a couple of weeks where all I got was the error message.

Thank you!

That’s a big improvement for Benen. If there were a way to make all the text visible on one page, without needing to click to expand, it’d be just about perfect.
It makes me sad that the layout from the Carpetbagger Report, which goes all the way back to 2008, is so much better than the current one on Maddow’s site.

Here’s a nice little RSS app for OS X: http://www.rockysandstudio.com/apps/rss-notifier. It’s available for free at the App Store. I’ve been using it on OS X Mavericks since the horrible, terrible MSNBC site launched. Simple to use, nicely integrated, no major issues so far. It isn’t a reader, it sits on the menu bar, notifies the user of new articles and will open articles in Safari. There are paid upgrades that provide a notification bar and stand-alone news reader, neither of which I’ve seen any need to purchase.
Betty Cracker
@rikyrah: The whole MSNBC redesign sucks, in my opinion. The site is no longer usable as a breaking news hub, and I cannot fathom why they made the comments sections so complex and fucked up. The number of “Be the First to Comment” notes on articles makes me think I’m not the only one who hates it.
MomSense
@rikyrah:
Now if MSNBC were in the private sector and had a CEO who was engaged and made sure that the website redesign went off without a hitch, they would never have had these glitches.
WaterGirl
@Walker: Thanks, you just saved me a lot of time. I was hoping that somehow they had put it back. :-(
WaterGirl
@jehrler: I had no idea there was such a thing as a stand-alone RSS app. I will look into it.
If anyone here has a good recommendation for the Mac, I hope you will let me know. Thanks.
Edit: and I see this question was answered, even before I asked it. Wow, you guys really are good!
Comrade Mary
Here’s your pedant moment for January 13, 2014.
Guys, you are COPYING and pasting from web sites, not CUTTING and pasting because all the text is still there on the web site.
You can only cut and paste from documents you control. Not someone else’s web site.
Thank you.
WaterGirl
@Andy: Do the articles open in Safari using the format from the original site? Because that’s what I’m trying to get away from. Hate the new slow ugly awful site for the steve benen blog.
Cervantes
@WaterGirl: Look here for a simple Safari extension that may help you.
Cervantes
@Comrade Mary: I love it!

I wouldn’t know about the copy and paste thingy. Mac/Firefox user at home.

@gene108: We get the other national weather channel, but it sucks compared to The Weather Channel. We aren’t paying for cable anymore either, just using an antenna for local channels and internet/Roku for anything else, so I guess we truly do get what we pay for. I do miss TWC though.
chopper
@Comrade Mary:
for all intensive purposes its the same.

@chopper: Do not make me bring the dolphin joke here. Just don’t. :P
