On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Looks like I have the blog to myself today. That means I can put up vacation pictures and they can stay on top of the blog for as long as I want. However I feel a little bad about the creed thing, even considering that some of you can neither wait for an open thread nor use the previous one, so I will post good vacation pics. Well I think they are good pics, and my judgment is pretty good. They both come from our Christmas trip to San Diego.
First, some shorebirds.
One shorebird.
Two more below the fold. I don’t want to spoil anything, but they are both pictures of rocks. I would have posted one picture of a rock but I could not decide which one I like better. Maybe you guys can help.
***Update***
Awright fine. The dog stayed in Pittsburgh, but here is a pic of him looking noble on one of our country’s other great coasts. Perhaps he is watching out for sharks, or considering a life on the sea.

Chat away.

No dog pictures? For shame.
Corner Stone
You’re actually pissed about someone not staying on a narrow topic here?
Hal
The fact that San Diego is not frozen right now is just further proof that global warming is a hoax. The shorebirds should be penguins.
Citizen_X
Lol. Just as John’s awake and about to post.
Nice pics though.

Oh, man, decisions, decisions. Rock #1 kind of looks like a worried otter, while Rock #2 looks like a purposeful alligator.
Team Otter! Team Alligator! Can’t decide!
Please post a picture of Max to heal the pain in my heart. Thank you.

Enough of these trolling vacation pictures. This blog need moar fuzzy, poorly-lit pictures of Maine Coon cats.
Just like it needs a raging case of highly infectious e-syphilis.
Quicksand
#2 is a bit cleaner, compositionally. With #1 my eye keeps wandering off to the blotchy sand.
They’re both nice though. I like rocks. Mmm hmm.
ranchandsyrup
looks like encinitas/cardiff/solana beach area?
the pic of sylvia is awesome. :)
Scamp Dog
Rock #1. I love those ripples.

Tim@top – you know we can scroll through those photos as a slideshow and see Max puppeh and Tim-daughter, right? She is so adorable!

Spent an hour trying to get a member ID online for health insurance. Finally gave up and had to call the toll free number which took another half hour because the computer system was slow on their end as well.
Applying the right wing Obamacare standard, I guess this means that private, for-profit, employer provided insurance is a failure.
@Anoniminous: I mentioned last night we would do that as a practical joke to newbies in the frozen warehouse. But we were always smart enough to aim away from the person, just in case.
scav
@Comrade Mary: Well. liking them both, but between digging itself in rock and causing ripples rock, the ripply one may be slightly more locally representative, if we’re choosing rock mascots. Not that digging in of positions doesn’t occur, the ripples just seem more snarly.
pat
no. 2 looks like the rock has moved and left a trail behind it.

@Anoniminous:
This is why the Mythbusters do disclaimers at the start of the show and after every commercial break. Because people are stupid.

Kanye stops Coinye!
Obama must have gotten to him

Also, too, the really fun thing when standing on the shore in Southern California looking at the scenery is when one of the rocks suddenly moves, and you realize you’ve been staring at a sea lion or seal that’s napping on the rock.
Evolution, bitchez.

Doggie pics! Ran across this doggie pic today–“totes adorbs” as my kid would say.

@srv: To steal a comment posted elsewhere on the net in reaction to this story, Kanye’s not gonna let them finish.

@pat:
That’s an actual thing, in the desert.

@Mnemosyne: That happened to me the first time I saw the Pacific Ocean. I was tired from the last leg of a cross-country drive but all excited to see the pinnipeds, and I just kept staring and staring at the ocean, and finally, I said, “Where are the goddamned seals? I was promised lots of seals!” And someone pointed out that they were impersonating rocks all around me!

I made this video of the Coastal Dune Lake Breech we saw on 30a at Thanksgiving. The lake undermined the dunes and a torrent headed out to sea.

@raven: cool video raven. thx for sharing.

@Anoniminous: Here’s a cool science trick that’s not nearly as dangerous. It came from my oldest, who is studying to be a biochemist.
The temps here were in the range of 22 when I went to bed, to 16 when I woke up. I took a clear plastic water bottle and filled it to the top, put the cap on it, and set it outside before I went to bed, so 7+ hours in below freezing. When I woke up and looked at it, it was still unfrozen, and when I touched it, it felt like it was at about the same temperature as when I put it outside. I picked it up, and shook it a little bit. The ice started freezing from the top to the bottom, taking about 6-10 seconds. Only the outside was frozen, but it was just cool seeing it freeze that way.
You want to make sure you put the bottle in a place that it won’t be disturbed until you pick it up.
TaMara (BHF)
@Belafon: You can do this with soda, too and make slushies.
SiubhanDuinne
@raven: That’s cool. Thanks.

The trifecta: learn how to fold a fitted sheet while watching an adorable doggie and listening to a catchy song.
However, this video (featuring a sweet homemakerly lady) will actually show you how to fold the damn sheet.

@Belafon: FYWP is eating my comment so let’s see if the raw link works

@MattR: That is a demonstration of super cooled water freezing that was done as part of a documentary into Air France flight 447.

Great pictures of Max/ Love that doggie

Heh. I got an email ad this morning for some Wall Street huckster, hyping something he called “Edison’s money”. I watched the vid for about 5 minutes with the sound off, the better to see the phony sales hooks (a venture capitalist guy!) and overdone production values (TV monitors! with maps and stuff!). The game for me was figuring out the actual product before the reveal. At first I figured it was rare coins, but no. The thing he wanted to sell you was advice on how and when to buy it so you could become fabulously wealthy with little upfront investment? Bitcoin.
I’d say this is as obvious a sign of a top in bitcoin as having cab drivers give you tips on which internet stock is the next guaranteed rocket ship in early 2000.

MAXPUPPEH!! The thread is now complete.

The lower rock picture is the better one. Just my gut, fast reaction.
Looks lovely there. Not eleventy below zero, either.
