Here’s a goodbye message to Liz Cheney, using cultural signifiers easily comprehended by her core demographic. I’m sorry to see her go, but there is a bit of justice in the fact that some gay bashing ratfucking put the final nail in her already well-assembled coffin. Though I sincerely hope that her children are fine, since we can’t choose our parents, I’ll bet you a shiny quarter that this is a lie:
“Serious health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign. My children and their futures were the motivation for our campaign and their health and well-being will always be my overriding priority,” Cheney said in the statement.
Baud
It’s not a lie. Loseritis is a thing.
Southern Beale
“Serious health issues” ?? You mean, her father is a borg kept artificially alive with a chunk of metal in his chest? Blame it on daddy, why not.
Jerry
But I sunk my life savings into popcorn futures!!!!
Disclaimer: I had no life savings to sink into any kind of futures, including my own.
dpm (dread pirate mistermix)
@Southern Beale: The way that’s worded (and it is very ambiguous), it sounds to me like something is going on with her kids.
NorthLeft12
“Serious competency issues have once again arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, I have decided to discontinue my campaign. My parents and their legacy were the motivation for my campaign and they have indicated that I am embarrassing them in public. Obeying them will always be my overriding priority,” Cheney said in the statement.
There, I interpreted her statement from Cheney/wingnut into plain English. I believe my version is more plausible.
randomworker
Now at least she can leave that godforsaken place and get back to DC.
dmsilev
Strictly speaking, ‘my father is a vampire’ is a family health issue.
Granted, it is sort of a pre-existing condition, but maybe now with Obamacare it’s finally insureable.
Baud
@dpm (dread pirate mistermix):
It does suggest that. I wish no harm to the Cheney kids, at least one of whom may carry the recessive humanity gene.
Chyron HR
Maybe she means that her sister is sick, sick, siiiiiiiiiiick!
MattF
@Baud: It would have to skip two generations, which would be unusual.
Rich2506
I think the people in Wyoming were pissed off about Cheney’s presumption that “Hey, it’s a small state population-wise, we’ll be able to pull one over on the rubes up there! It’s not like any of them are sophisticated enough to see through our clever, advanced, big-city-type plans.”
amk
The bigger question is will she get a refund on that fucking fishing license?
OzarkHillbilly
@randomworker: Wyoming is not “Godforsaken”. It is in fact one of the most beautiful states in the union. It just happens to be populated by the spawn of Satan. If it wasn’t for that, it would be almost perfect.
Violet
Hope her kids are ok but “sick kid” is a great excuse for her to move back to D.C. and one no one will question.
Emily68
@Baud: I certainly hope no Cheney children are sick. What their grandparents and mother do isn’t their fault.
Elizabelle
Good thinking there, cowardly Liz Cheney.
Now people are going to be watching your kids closely to see which one evidences “serious health problems.” Good on you for giving your minor children their privacy. I guess they’re living in Wyoming now, given your commitment to your state?
A wag might think the serious health problems were most likely your anemic polling numbers and the exertion you were undergoing in shaking cash out of Republican wallets.
Sad if a Cheney kid does have a serious health problem, but this sounds like an excuse.
WereBear
My take is “Mary is going to poison my coffee if I open my big yap about her family one more time.”
Elizabelle
Wonder if one of the kids was near a breakdown from teasing by other kids, or even because the cousins are torn apart by the gay marriage fiasco and cooling within the family?
I don’t really care, but if Liz Cheney serves up her kids as an excuse — “as a mother and a patriot”, her own words — there really should be something there.
Although Cheney was not going to win her primary and her road was getting increasingly difficult.
Violet
Maybe her husband is the one who’s sick. Children’s futures means she needs wingnut welfare money.
Kay
Nightmare as a Senator. Remember this?
Imagine if she had real power? Now she can go back to running her horrible smear campaigns out of a PO box in Virginia.
Violet
@Elizabelle: Maybe one of the kids came out as being gay. Serious health issue.
Elizabelle
Someone in the Politico comments called Liz Cheney a “high plains drifter.”
“High plains grifter” is more like it.
(And the comments I saw would belong here; not much Liz Cheney love out there this morning.)
WereBear
@Kay: A bridge too far for fellow Republicans?
All those rutabagas I sacrificed are paying off now, people!

@Kay:
It is sad to think of all the staff and “Executive Directors” of Cheney-like advocacy groups who make good money off of tearing the government down to and for everybody else.
While meantime the Cheneys continue to grift off same government.
So much money being made out of spewing ugliness, hopelessness and lies.

I’m sure it’ll be easy for Mary to forgive and forget, now that the campaign is over. Not.
There is great poetic justice in having this bit of wingnut pandering tear that family apart.

@Elizabelle:
It seems to me that patriot is a word that is, like saint, statesman, genius & a few others, a designation that should not be used to describe one’s self but should be attributed by others.It smacks of vanity, not to mention overwrought rhetoric.
Elizabelle
@gelfling545:
to say nothing of being the last refuge of a scoundrel!
You’re right. Do people run around bragging of their personal “valor”? I think not.
Kay
@Elizabelle:
It isn’t just the federal government. Liz Cheney doesn’t exclusively parachute into Wyoming. She really feels she can run any state. In her heart. Incredibly, she had strong feelings about the threat of second grade teachers retaining collective bargaining rights in Ohio. Just ask her. Opposed!
National security, education, collective bargaining, whatever. Her single (appointed) position in her dad’s administration makes her America’s Expert on America. I’m surprised she hasn’t weighed in on county snow removal efforts.

Maybe a tad uncharitable, but my main thought on hearing the news was:

I hope that is not the case, for her kids sake. But we are dealing with a low-life, weaselly, sack of shit here and the statement is worded in such a way the said LLWSoS can have everyone believe that (it would be impolite to inquire) but if called on it pretend to be shocked that they had been misunderstood.
Elizabelle
@Kay:
That’s appalling. Has Liz Cheney been successful in her advocacy efforts? She’s on the wrong side of everything, isn’t she?
It’s frightening how much influence “special interests” can have and exert. And how they’ve managed to make “special interests” code for teachers and unions.

Very happy to see Liz Cheney go down in flames.
But that Lawrence Welk video–do you notice how those sweater-vests on the guys make them all look as though their arms are just kind of stapled-on at the shoulders? Combined with the fact that none of them know how to move to music, it’s like looking at a lot of badly-assembled paper dolls where the arms are pinned on with paper-fasteners.
Weird. When future generations are puzzled about the nature of this “whiteness” that racists were so desperate to protect, then they will consult this video, and sputter, “well, now I see what it *is*, but why the hell would they have wanted to *protect* it???”

Kay
@Elizabelle:
It’s funny to me because obviously she has a lot of power, there’s huge money behind the groups she runs and that’s power, but she still wants legit state power, the real thing. She wants “Senator” rather than ” political operative”.
Now I have to figure out if I should go to work. We had a Level Three snow emergency, courts are closed and the manufacturing plant where on of my son’s works is also closed (which means it’s genuinely bad when huge private employers close) but I can actually get to work without any problem I live so close to the office, so I’m debating going in. We already told the two support staff to stay home.

I too hope that there’s nothing truthful about the “health problems” bit, especially as pertains to her kids. Given Liz’s track record on honesty, however, I see good reason to be optimistic that the kids, and everyone else, are just fine.

You have to wonder if sister Mary has some family stories to share, unless Liz apologizes. Hopefully it is not her children but it’s more likely that the race would damage her chances in the future.
Elizabelle
@Kay:
That’s a tough one. Would icing be dangerous for you, no matter how close you live to your office? Can you work from home effectively?
I’m about to put together a crockpot beef stew. It can be cold outside and smell good inside.
Elizabelle
@Kay:
Also Kay: will you be reaching clients and people you need to reach by phone? Or leaving voicemails at empty offices?
My sister’s employers were good enough to insist she show up for work the day after Christmas so she could call people who weren’t working that week. (Her company works with universities, for Gawd’s sake.)
She read Hyperbole and a Half and cruised Buzzfeed.
I would respect her employer more if they’d given their employees a free day or two. Their staff is trimmed to the bone, and they’re stingy with pay and vacay time. Her company deals with staff shortages by hiring more executives. Isn’t that nice?

@Violet: People are going to point and mock like crazy, but its not relevant since she’s decided to cut her losses and its not like she gives a fuck what Wyoming thinks of her if she is moving on to greener pastures.

I’ll repeat what I said on a previous thread: she’s now at the head of the line for next time this seat comes up. Enzi will be over 75 at the end of his next term and Cheney will say, “it’s my turn.”
I don’t think she ever expected to win. She just put her quarter on the machine.

@Kay: The standard by which I judge how bad the winter weather is here is whether the Chicago Public Schools are closed, and whether my old high school out in the boonies is closed (my old HS’s motto is, once you graduate and get out into the working world, your employer isn’t going to close either, so get used to it). This morning, they’re all closed.

This was a popular show back in the days of only 3 channels to watch, scary isn’t it!
Polite white people do NOT allow the music to make them sway or jiggle like jungle savages! Such behavior would only lead to promiscuity. (in the pre-internet days I was explaining a joke I made about ‘jungle music’ to my kids – they refused to believe that at one time that sort of thing was actually said & promoted. A few years later one of them found a video on line of some red necked politician ranting on the topic and had to show it to me because they wanted confirmation that the guy was serious – I guess thats progress of a sort)

@Schlemizel: In general those “Muchausen by Proxy’ people are not sane (IMO).

@Kay: Having lived near the buckle of the snow belt all my life I advise: when in doubt, stay home. Staying home keeps the streets clear for the plows, let’s building maintenance work on the parking lots & lessens the chance that some poor first responders are going to have to be called out for any difficulty you may find yourself in. Unless you are expecting to perform emergency services today, your work will wait until tomorrow.

We didn’t have a lot of money, but my parents would go to the store, buy extra milk and eggs, and some bacon, to cook. When the relatives would leave, my mom would always say, “Hope to see you again.” I knew damn well that if they never came back we’d never inquire about them.

@Ash Can:
My eldest son lives in Chicago and he was telling me about it last night. His workplace is closed today but his girlfriend’s isn’t, so they were strategizing on how many “layers” she should wear. When people in that city are complaining about cold it’s serious. It gets really cold here but there’s something uniquely bone-chilling about Chicago winters. That wind is just brutal. I lived in South Bend for a while and they have a taste of it, but Chicago is worse.
I just drove into work and the roads are fine but there’s huge drifts and the wind is picking up, so I’ll stay ’till noon and then probably go home. I like to have a human being answer the phone here, if at all possible.

Patriot is one of those words that should apply to everyone, but sadly does not. And we can’t even agree on what makes a patriot, and what separates some activists from patriotism.
Ms Cheney, who is probably married, but kept her maiden name, is certainly somewhere on the scale of patriots in her own mind. Others have their own opinions about where on the scale she sits today.

Strategically, Liz could have started making her move on WY after Enzi was re-elected this next cycle; it would have put her quarter on the pool table and it would have avoided pissing off the WY rethug establishment, and she would have likely succeeded. Having been so thuggish and hamhanded about the whole thing this time has probably killed any chance of that working now.
The whole “Liz, go to WY and take that senate seat” thing came from her daddy, period. Daddy Cheney doesn’t care who or what he runs over to get what he wants, and he needs to see one of his spawn in a government position of power to ensure his legacy continues. Even Dick Cheney can’t buy a heart that lasts forever, and I suspect he’s realizing that so it was time to get one of his deferments firmly attached to the government body. They’re both such beltway insiders they simply couldn’t see how everyone in WY saw through it from day one. The mountain west is kinda insular, and carpetbaggers are not popular even if their daddy was originally from there.
