Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) defends his vote against SNAP with this bible verse:
For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.
Kevin’s about my age and we grew up in similar circumstances. Probably, like me, at least one set of his grandparents were hard-working farmers in North Dakota. And it is almost certain that they were beneficiaries of one of the biggest government handouts in the history of government handouts: the Homestead Acts. The value of land given away to one person by that Act is now more than $300K in most parts of his state. He’s also probably two generations removed from relatives who came over on a boat, and one generation removed from relatives who had first-hand experience of the Depression, and the hunger and poverty experienced by people with no social safety net.
Let’s contrast Rep. Cramer with another Republican, Bob Dole. Like most other prairie state legislators of his generation, (including North Dakotans Quintin Burdick and Milton Young) Dole was part of the effort to feed our country and the world. Dole and George McGovern wrote the modern SNAP act and got it through Congress. His and McGovern’s name are on the legislation that authorizes spending on food for millions of children around the world.
Bob Dole just turned 90, so his obituary is already written, and none of the honest efforts are going to make him sound like Mr. Congeniality. Still, the one thing that won’t be said in any of them is that he wanted to take the food out of mouths of children. Kevin Cramer, at a mere 52 years old, has already cemented that part of his legacy, and he’s an ungrateful, god-bothering asshole to boot.
Gex
Thank you! For the longest time I’ve been calling the Homestead Act the biggest welfare program the United States ever had, the recipients of which were almost all white (if not all). And if people think taxes are a horrible way to “take” from a people, it pales in comparison to genocide.

Also, too, Deuteronomy 15:
“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you.”

@RaflW: Unfortunately the GOP has started making an argument that government taking people’s money and handing it out doesn’t count. They think the charity called for in the Bible should come through people and churches. They are trying to starve people while saying they are following the Bible’s calls for helping the poor.
They are more than willing to increase faith based initiative spending and force the poor in this country to be proselytized to in order to receive that charity. And are more than willing to exclude gay people from their charity, seeing as they keep fighting to allow these kinds of groups to discriminate against that one specific group of people. And I’m sure they would be willing to exclude other groups too, if given the opportunity.
weaselone
I posted this on the bottom of the last thread but will repeat it here.
There seems to be a significant reading comprehension fail on the part of conservatives in regard to that verse. “Won’t” and “unwilling” or not synonymous with “unable to work”, or “unable to find work.” There is also no indication that “work” requires any compensation let alone a level sufficient to obviate the need for assistance in order to qualify as such.
As of September, 30 2010.
47 percent of beneficiaries were children under age 18.
8 percent were age 60 or older.
41 percent lived in a household with earnings from a job — the so-called “working poor.”

You are misreading that quote. It really means, according to the Prosperity Gospel, that the Holy Job Creators, hereafter to be known as the HJC, should have unfettered access to the spoils while doing the heavy lifting required to keep the economy running.
In addition, it is against the Gospel to try and stop them from shitting all over our food after the HJC’s have eaten their fill.

The Truth is that most poor people are fat. Being fat, they are at a higher risk of pulmonary disease, high blood pressure, and being discriminated against in the workplace. Perhaps if we were to cut their food stamp benefits, they would become healthier, more attractive, and more likely to not be discriminated against in the workplace and succeed in finding gainful, Biblical employment. Then they could purchase their own food.

Also: “Over 80 percent of households that receive benefits have gross incomes below the poverty line.”
Here’s the thing, for me. Republicans will say that they’re just cutting SNAP to get rid of fraud, and they’re only talking about 5% of the total SNAP budget. But they’re leaving out that the average monthly benefit is just $133.41, and taking 5% of that can be a big hit for people already in poverty. For context, I think of what happens when gas prices go up by 5%—it makes the national news and there’s a lot of rending of garments and such.

Part of my life as a kid was spent eating food my parents purchased using food stamps. Life was really rough then, and the assistance made us not starve but that’s about it. One or two times we got a food basket donation made by a church for a holiday, which to this day makes me not hate religion. I can’t imagine how a family would eat on the program now before the cuts, let alone what’s just passed.
I think it’s the 1% obsession by the GOP. If there’s a 1% chance that a terrorist will strike, then go whole hog (or whole potato for those who are vegetarians) to reduce the 1% to Zilch.
Or like that 1% chance that there’s voter fraud (when in fact it comes to less than 1%).

“At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge, … it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”
“Are there no prisons?”

“And the Union workhouses.” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”
“Both very busy, sir…”

What news have YOU been reading lately? AFAICT, it has been a decade or so since the media have concerned themselves with rising energy prices. Time was (and I think it was just before the turn of the century) that a few cents rise in the pump price of gasoline, or of heating oil, would prompt breathless coverage in the “MSM” – now: the retail prices of hydrocarbon fuels have, what? more than doubled? in ten years, and only the occasional horror-story (like gouging during hurricanes, etc) even gets more than a *shrug* on the nitely news.
Of course, this omission may or may be related to the fact that higher energy costs swell the bottom lines of insanely wealthy multinational mega-corporations… (I’ll go with “may”!)

Strange, I can’t find any biblical verses justifying the massive farm subsidies given to North Dakota shitkickers, yet I doubt Cramer will be voting down these handouts confiscated from other Americans.

So I finally looked up this verse (and read the entire chapter and Googled and wiki’d — however superficially — for a bit of context). Now, I’m not anything approaching a scholar, but I’m curious why they stop there. The three verses that immediately follow their old “God told us to starve you” saw don’t seem like bad advice either:

If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.
THAT is exactly what Food Stamps are supposed to be.
THAT is the Biblical quote Republicans need to remember.
PaulW
@Belafon:
Here’s the thing: a lot of people on food stamps ARE WORKING. It’s just they’re working for shitty wages that can’t pay for everything – rent, mortgage, furniture, car payments, clothes, food, health care, meds, etc – so they gotta go on food stamps to cover the need to, you know, feed kids.
And if the Republicans start pushing that Newt idea of making middle schoolers work for food money, goddammit start the riots right then and there.

The quote crammer wants to use to deny people food is about “not willing to work”. The majority of unemployed at not “unwilling” to work, they are unable to work, don’t have a job, have a job which pays so little they can’t feed themselves or their families on.
Crammer needs a dose of reality. jWhat he is suggesting is that people can die from starvation and that includes children. The last time I checked the other country which had such a policy was North Korea. Perhaps Crammer has more in common with NorthKorea than he thinks.
