@lamh36: I heard that on the news. Hate to say it but it’s probably best that he committed suicide. What he did was absolutely horrific and, chances, are he was probably going to get killed in some gruesome way in prison anyway.

Aside from refusing to name names?

And yet Dalton Trumbo disagreed with you, at least when it came to war:
Trumbo was blacklisted (a) because he was an active Communist but, more importantly (b) he was actively involved in getting some teeth into the Writer’s Guild, which pissed off the studios, who wanted to keep exploiting their writers. Most of the Hollywood witchhunts and blacklisting was aimed at punishing union activists.

Always liked that Metallica video. It was their first and was a winner.
I hope the domestic terrorists in the GOP do the right thing and vote down the AUMF. I’m more than tired of all the brouhaha about it. No missiles fly. Leave it alone.

Yeah. That’s better.

Nonsense. He deserved to spend decades in a cell contemplating what he did to those women.

One thing I’ve been enjoying recently is the AV Club’s ‘hatesong’ feature. Basically they take a semi-famous comedian or musician and ask them to pick a song they deeply hate and let loose on it. A lot of the songs are easy targets (Taylor Swift and Meat Loaf have been the last two), but the language itself is usually funny. But those comments…! Are we just losing our ability as a culture to take a joke? Making fun of other people’s music ought to be an occasion for good-natured back-and-forth, not an excuse for a bunch of hipsters to mount their high horses and talk about how hateful someone must be for being so negative. Sheesh.

@mai naem:
Well, it was best for him, which is probably why he did it. As I said below, I’m not surprised that he was unwilling to live in conditions similar to the ones he’d made those three girls live in for years on end.

@The prophet Nostradumbass: I hope the women are doing OK in light of this news. I can imagine this being very painful for them, or very healing.
Time Travelin
Heavy duty music tonight, eh?
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Suzanne: that is something where I can’t imagine what they may be thinking or feeling.

@Spaghetti Lee: I have enjoyed reading some of those as well. The AV Club comments can be terrible, like many sites. They have a whole lot of unfunny amateur comedians, kind of like the Gawker sites, actually.
Speaking of AV Club, Scott Kaufman of LGM has a new gig writing for them. If you’ve liked his posts about Game of Thrones and some other shows, you’ll like the new ones as well.

@RobertDSC-iPhone 4:
I wouldn’t bet too heavy on that. Boehner, Cantor endorse strike on Syria
Spaghetti Lee
@The prophet Nostradumbass:
I’d appreciate more amateur comedians at both sites. I can handle crappy puns and cheap shots. What I can’t cope with are people who get all ruffled up and go “I’m going to deconstruct what (I think) you really meant, and show the world how morally inferior you are! Your reign of terror ends tonight!” These are people who can read a sentence like “I think Stephen Stills should be tortured to death” and not get the hyperbole. Do they think that Mel Brooks likes pushing people down manhole covers and watching them die, too? Were they outraged that Johnny Cash never did time for what happened in Reno?
Mnemosyne
@magurakurin:
Boehner and Cantor have endorsed lots of things that they ended up not even bringing to the floor for a vote because they have no control over their caucus. So I wouldn’t say it’s a sure bet the other way, either.

Semi-obligatory, I guess: Peace Train.

@Mnemosyne: I’m watching Aqua Buddha here. He gets a twofer: cred with his daddy’s followers plus shivving Obummer by voting no. Too early to call his filibuster?
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Spaghetti Lee: Well, on the AV Club site, I guess I must be better at ignoring the people who get all het up at the idea that someone’s taste in music/books/movies is different. The amateur comedians annoy me more, for some reason. As for the Gawker sites, Deadspin has done some really excellent sports journalism, but their comment section is really obnoxious, full of unfunny people.

Sill holds up as satire and incisive dissection. The radio play “The Investigator,” that is, from the McCarthy/witch-hunt/blacklisting era. Listen here.

Anyone happen to watch the USWNT match today? My kingdom for a scoreline like that for the men’s team :P
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Alison: 7-zip for the men’s team would be something :-).
Alison
@The prophet Nostradumbass: I MEAN. Can you imagine?
I’ll settle for another dos a cero though :P

@Alison: mea culpa, was busy working and didn’t do a great job realizing it was a statement, not a request

I know folks love soccer/football, and that’s great. It is after just entertainment and whatever you enjoy, great. But, personally, I just can’t get to soccer. It’s the officiating that ultimately turns me completely off. For one there simply aren’t enough refs and two, the yellow card and red card calls, which can be total game changers, are just too arbitrary for me. I can’t get past it.
But I’ve grown to like rugby union quite a bit. Ironically, that sport too is somewhat plagued by arcane rules and gray officiating most particular in regard to the scrum. But the smashing makes up for it.
Alison
@piratedan: Oh, hehe, no worries :)

@magurakurin: when I briefly lived in England, I went to a few matches of Blackheath RFC, and it was a lot of fun. You would enter up a driveway, where you’d give a ticket taker a small fee, and walk in. There was a “club” (i.e. bar) behind one of the end lines, and you could buy a beer and walk around the side (touch?) lines and watch the action. It was a blast.
magurakurin
@The prophet Nostradumbass: Of all the soccer I’ve watched, I will admit that I find the British Premier League games to be the best so maybe there is something to the British culture around the sport. And I can definitely see how going to a match like that would be fun. I’m thinking my real problem is with FIFA soccer. I hate the Olympics, too, so there’s that. Plus, I’m just not that big of a sport fan to begin with. Soccer demands too much attention.

@Mnemosyne:
If I’d been held prisoner by that monster, I’d be glad he was dead. He did those girls (and his son) a HUGE favor. Now they can all move on.

@The prophet Nostradumbass: True, but as an Ohioan, I’d just as soon not have to pay for his upkeep.

Damn, Cole, all the music you like is from the Bush-Quayle era.

@The prophet Nostradumbass: I agree. What a piece of chickenshit.
