Watch The March – PREVIEW on PBS. See more from The March.
Tonight at 9pm, via commentor LAMH36:
‘The March’ is the story of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, told by the people who organized and participated in it. It includes interviews with some of the key actors; members of the inner circles of the core organizational groups; Hollywood supporters and civil rights campaigners; John F. Kennedy administration officials; and the ordinary people who became part of the crowd of thousands, who thronged to Washington D.C. by all and every means: plane, bus and car.
‘The March’ is the story of discrimination, defiance and victory told by the people who made it happen and whose lives it changed forever…

Awesome! Thanks for the FP Anne!
Just in case anyone wanted to know about the time of POTUS speech before the Lincoln Memorial, here’s some info from the WHPC:
Also too, apparently, this happened:
Hmmm, how’s that outreach working for ya (in my best Sarah Palin grifta voice), GOP.

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Maine shows current US Rep. Mike Michaud (D) leading Gov. Paul “Landslde” LePage in the race for governor, 39% to 35%, with another 18% for Eliot Cutler. That’s basically the MoE. Cutler should be able to narrow that once the two challengers start running ads against each other instead of LePage.
In a two way contest, Michaud would blow LePage out, 54% to 39%.
Same 3-way-race dynamic that gave us arguably the craziest governor in the country last time….

I would also plug Backstory this week, too.

@Davis X. Machina:
I don’t know. I have never seen teachers so pissed in all my life. They are fuming about LePage and furious that Cutler shares so many of his opinions about teachers unions and charter schools. I think this time will be different.

Anne, I am so glad that you highlighted the show on PBS tonight. Sunday’s MTP aired an interview with Martin Luther King from fifty years ago. Many of us remember the King years but history does gloss over the Communist sentiment that was occurring at that time. I do think that J. Edgar played the communist card.

Yep, that’s my plan for the evening. Wouldn’t miss it for anything. Saw tons of promos for it last night and settled on tonight’s viewing then and there.

So, nothing to do with prostates, then. That’s a relief.

Love the newsmax headline regarding The Butler “plummeting” 30% in it’s second week. They are so irate at the portrayal of Saint Ronnie.

Wish I could care, just another photo op and in truth he really doesn’t care about MLK message only on advancing the his puppet master goals. The Main Street Amerika (we) good luck you are on your own.

@Alexandra:
Funny how you never hear the media delve into the liberal versions of that;
“Liberal and moderate Christians irritated with right wing flavor of 21st century American Christianity.”
“Black and non-racist white Southerners sick and tired of seeing Confederate flags over state houses.”
“Cubans under the age of 50 wish their grandparents would shut the fuck up about Fidel Castro.”
But somehow, Herman Cain and three other guys constitute a powerful and representative protest movement, worthy of respect and coverage.

Anyone watching the PBS “In Performance at the White House”? Jennifer Hudson and now Yolanda Adams–both amazing.

@efgoldman: We had a similar situation in Vermont for several years when the Democrats and Progressives kept splitting the non-Republican vote. That said, Jim Douglas was no Paul LePage.

I know a lot of folks don’t have much use for Time Magazine and its ilk, and, in certain important areas, like the economy, I agree. But, a couple times a month they have an article that makes the $28 a year worth it. This week, the article was on the March. They just talked with a lot of the participants from the time and posted what they had to say. Lots of good stuff, but, the one that hit me was a comment by Clarence B. Jones, King’s speechwriter. He was standing on the platform behind King as King stood to read his speech.
If that doesn’t send shivers down your spine, I don’t know what will.

@Davis X. Machina:
You’re going to win. I swear, Democrats are the biggest worriers on the planet :)

The Freedom Singers were great and then Bob Dylan came on and my youngest said “hey is that Bilbo Baggins”
I do like this arrangement of Times They Are-a Changing.

The complete MLK speech given in D.C. will air, uncut and uninterrupted, on Chris Hayes’ show on Wednesday.

You’re a white guy, right? Oh, I guess I’m the real racist.

Thanks for front paging this, Anne. Not sure if I’ll watch it, but I’ll keep it in mind.

@efgoldman: Cutler’s not a politician, though. He’ll tell you — over and over again — how the problem with politics is that there’s too much politics involved. And the answer is not better politicians, it’s no politicians at all. And he’s not a Democrat — his party left him..
Groucho48
@efgoldman:
Yeah, my family all watched it. My father was moderately racist but even he was impressed. I think it actually had a permanent effect on his thinking.

The American Experience ran a documentary on the Freedom Riders in 1961. Talk about bravery. It also shows that America’s establishment suddenly became enlightened on race in the late 50s and 60s. The motivation was imperial. The Jim Crow apartheid regime in the South was an international embarrassment and handicap to the interests of Empire and therefore had to go. The interplay between the Freedom Riders and Kennedy’s trip to Europe and the Vienna summit with Khrushev really taught me something I had not thought about, And both SNCC and Martin Luther King were aware of the that leverage on the American Government.
Not that it was not well know, but in a world filled with assholes in 1961, J. Edgar Hoover was perhaps the biggest.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@sherparick: I watched that after the documentary on The March last night, and it was pretty powerful. I remember one redneck hayseed down there saying on camera, proudly, that the southern white man was the best friend the negro ever had. Yeah, because your best friend is the guy who might lynch you just because he feels like it.
