Twitter from Dan Gillmor…I dare the Onion to even attempt to do better than the NSA’s announcement of top-spy Clapper’s “review” of NSA http://www.dni.gov/index.php/newsroom/press-releases/191-press-releases-2013/909-dni-clapper-announces-review-group-on-intelligence-and-communications-technologies …
The White House has a tin ear when it comes to this issue. Hippy punching, indeed.
Will miss TBogg.
c u n d gulag
TBogg?
Say it ain’t so!!!
He was the only reason to look at FDL, over the last 4-5 years.
Maybe he’ll come back, somewhere else.
That mofo is FUNNY!!!
Too funny, to just quit quipping!
Boudica
My favorite was Julie Andrews…..
Steeplejack
@c u n d gulag:
Repeated from downstairs:
Cole should ease him in over here as a front-pager emeritus with no posting quota. The patented TBogg snark, the basset hounds and the Shakira ass videos would class up the place.
Baud
@Mino:
Clapper sucks, but that seems like a good thing that’s happening. Quite the opposite of a tin ear.
gogol's wife
@Steeplejack:
Absolutely! He would fit in perfectly here.
Baud
I haven’t read TBogg much, mostly because I rarely leave the boat, but from what I’ve seen and heard of him, it seems like it would be a lot fun if he popped in to post on occasion.
c u n d gulag
@Steeplejack:
I third the motion!
Mr. Cole?
PurpleGirl
When he had his own blog I read him all the time. When he joined Fire Dog Lake I stopped reading him because of the FDL structure. If John could get him to do the occasional post here, ah that would be so great.
raven
@PurpleGirl: Fuck the FDL structure.
Betty Cracker
@Mino: Not sure I agree that hippies per se were punched in that announcement, but yeah, having Clapper in charge of putting the panel together knocks common sense on the noggin as Clapper is known to have lied about the extent of surveillance. It’ll be interesting to see who is included on that panel.
AxelFoley
@raven:
Fuck FDL, period.
Suffern ACE
While I’ll miss him, I hope he stays blog retired. In this day and age, with republicans always on the cusp of privatizing social security for pennies on the dollar under the excuse that we live longer, and corporations declaring themselves insolvent to get rid of their underfunded pension obligations, it’s nice to think someone can actually retire from something to spend fulfilling time in pursuits unrelated to one’s working life.
R-Jud
@Boudica: Mine too. Probably because I can only sing on key when I’m imitating Julie Andrews.
Villago Delenda Est
I was reading Tbogg back in the day, on the old Salon Table Talk, before they went apeshit and put it behind a paywall.
Ah, what memories.
Still, I understand where Tbogg is coming from. Time to hang up the spurs and enjoy that beach he lives on, with a basset or twelve by his side.
raven
@Suffern ACE: So, should I try to keep working until I’m 67 or bail now??
Doug Milhous J
Yes, would be great if we could get Tbogg to do an occasional post here!
Ultraviolet Thunder
TBogg dropping off the map and James Briggs Stratton ‘Doghouse’ Riley tipped off the perch. I need to find my daily quota of snark and outrage somewhere else.
Or maybe I don’t. I liked reading them both because they fed my anger about politics. But as easy and satisfying as anger is, perhaps it’s not healthy and productive. Might be a good time to reevaluate my reading choices and get the old blood pressure back down.
I notice that the estimable Mr. Pierce has quit flogging the hide off of Bobo, possibly due to the futility of the exercise.
tybee
@raven:
bail now.
ETA: two of my friends bailed at 62 and are having way more fun than they should be allowed to.
raven
@tybee:Ack, my buddy, who is the same age, did 2 years ago. My problem is I took my retirement in the 70’s! If I make it to 67 I have 20 in the gig I’m in and more SS. They have a thing to give xtra credit for military service in the 60’s because we mad so little that it doesn’t register.
fka AWS
Sad to see TBogg go, but thankful for all the laughs and thought he’s provided. Best to him and his for the future.
Dead Ernest
@Steeplejack:
Also repeated from down there, ‘an enthusiastic ‘Second!’ to this glorious idea.’
geg6
@Steeplejack:
Agreed. Like Billmon, I’ll keep him on my favorites list long after the page goes black. But I’d love it if he popped in as an FPer here now and again. I always like to see him hitting the comments with us.
And bassett pics. Must.have.bassett.pics.
Aimai
@fka AWS: he’ll I’m still mourning the demise of his priceless”America’s worst mother” theme. How will we live without the bogg?
Ben Cisco
@Dead Ernest: Yes, I agree. He would be perfect for this place.
Paul in KY
@Baud: Very occasionally he does comment here,
Paul in KY
@raven: If you have all the money you would need to live to 90 or thereabouts…bail!
gbear
I kind of like the idea of inviting TBogg to post over here if he wants to. Just think of all the new firebagging trolls that he’d drag over here just to spite him. I could do without Shakira’s ass though; the random ten thing was never a great idea. Nobody interacts with each other, they just post 10 songs that make them feel hip and then get out.
Also have to say that TBogg retiring from FDL is the least surprising surprise ever. I’d guess he was becoming bored and annoyed with his commentor pool.

Insomnia during pre-dawn Tuesday hours really blows.
News sites unupdated, and WoW offline for their weekly maintenance shutdown.
Lost TCM (and only TCM) from cable for over 14 hours yesterday. Finally called the cable company. Quoth they: “We don’t have any way of knowing about a specific channel outage unless someone calls us about it.”
Told them that if they expect me to be their tech and engineering staff as well as a customer, they’d darn well better send along a check for my time and services.
10 minutes after my call, phone rang with an automated survey about my “customer service experience.”
So glad sometimes that I have low blood pressure.

Re divas, Emperor Mike Bloomberg’s caterwauling that aspects of his beloved “stop-and-frisk” policing tactic have been ruled unconstitutional is music to my ears. According to Bloomberg and this morning’s NYC tabloids, wanton violence will now engulf the city. ‘Bye tourists.
While I have no fear whatsoever that violent crime will increase here due to this ruling (the practice itself will continue but now with independent monitoring and better police training), I am very much afraid of burbling rumors that Bloomberg will purchase the New York Times when his reign ends in December.
Beyond the immediate benefit to the daily lives of NYC’s African-American and Hispanic residents, one other very important result of Judge Scheindlin’s decision is that Ray Kelly, Bloomberg’s police commissioner, is now far less likely to be nominated as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.
Ultraviolet Thunder
@gbear:
I never read the comments at FDL. Like Tomasky’s commenters (post Guardian), life is just too short to let that much dumb into it.
I’ll buy his explanation that he prefers to go live life rather than sitting in a chair sniping at it. Sounds refreshingly sane and normal. Best of luck to Bogg.
gbear
@Ultraviolet Thunder: Yep. If he’s sick of blogging and wants the time to enjoy his analog life, more power to him. I will miss him though.
NotMax
@Ultraviolet Thunder
Good on him. Never had read any of his writings, but glean enough about the loyalty of and from his audience from the comments, and empathize.
Pretty much the same reason I stopped daily blogging after nearly a decade. Not that my threadbare little tiny corner of the ‘net was anything special, but did at one point get down to 114th most visited site as scored by Technorati, a score or so of shout-outs on Crooks & Liars, and had a small but unapologetically vocal group of regulars.

Love the divas! That kid is talented!
I Heart Breitbartbees
I’ll miss him dearly, but I also hope he stays retired. That said, if he wants to make the occasional guest post, that would be great. His “Your Mumia sweatshirt…” post is the single funniest destruction of the emo-left I have ever read. I have found myself re-reading it on occasion when I need perspective.
NotMax
@I Heart Breitbartbees
Gotta ask if your cybernym is by any chance a play on Huggbees.

TBogg! TBogg! PLEASE come and post here when you feel the urge!
No pressure, dude – but the only reason I ever visited FDL was because of you. Y’all are just funny as hell and that’s a rare talent – please don’t deprive us of that unique voice.
Like I said, no pressure (haha!)
PaulW
Digby, I pray to FSM, will remain immortal… one hopes…
I Heart Breitbartbees
@NotMax: Nah, I was thinking of I Heart Huckabees, ironically a movie I haven’t even seen, when I came up with my name. Still, your idea is cooler, so I’ll steal it if you don’t mind. lol Also, Candlejack Candlejack Candlej…

@Betty Cracker:
Clapper was put in an impossible position by Ron Wyden, who should know better. If Wyden was really interested in getting a truthful answer to a question that couldn’t be answered truthfully without revealing classified information, he should have asked it in a classified session. It was a cheap stunt.

Good for Tbogg. Was just about the last reason I had to go to FDL. I’ll keep the bookmark for FDL. Just won’t use it as much.
Life outside these intertubes? Does it really exist or is it a fictional representation within the Matrix we create every day? Tbogg will find out.
gogol's wife
@NotMax:
I saw your message about Wonderfalls last night. I do remember back from when it started that I thought I would like it, but never watched it for some reason. I have a hard time tuning in for series. I have no idea how to watch things on the internet, unless they’re on YouTube.
I’m having trouble with my TCM too! Horrors!
Steeplejack
Annals of libertarianism: “Beijing Professor Builds Illegal Mountain Villa on Rooftop of Apartment Block.”
I love collecting stories like this to use when some numbnuts relative e-mails me about government overregulation, suffocating red tape, needless restraint of the “makers,” etc. They never seem to connect unlimited business freedom with things like this or melamine in their pet food.
And of course their answer is, “But it’s China! That could never happen here.” Ugh.
handsmile
@PaulW:
Seconds on that! Do wish she’d bring back comments (though perhaps their absence helps to maintain the health of the franchise).

My favorite Tbogg was the traveling Romney brothers with their many, varied names. Laugh out loud funny.
gogol's wife
@Boudica:
The Julie Andrews one was good. I don’t know the originals of most of these, but Garland and Streisand were pretty underwhelming.
handsmile
@gogol’s wife:
As you’ve referred to TCM and Garland in successive comments, I’m moved to say that today would have been an excellent day for me to have trouble with the channel. But sadly, no.
Judy’s frequent co-star, Mickey Rooney, has been selected as TCM’s “Star-of-the-day” with a full 24 hours devoted to his, uh, oeuvre. (Rooney’s a nails-on-the-blackboard actor for me.) As you said above, “Horrors!”
Jim, Foolish Literalist
I think Palin and others will keep pulling him back in! If it’s only every couple of weeks, that’s better than nothing.
StringOnAStick
@Ultraviolet Thunder: Preach, Thunder, preach. I have been coming to the conclusion that I need to spend more time outdoors, reading books, living real life, etc., and lots less on blogs. Tbogg’s retirement and reasons is making that choice a lot easier to approach.
fuckwit
@burnspbesq: then why not reply “I can’t answer that in oen session” instead of falling into the trap?
Betty Cracker
@fuckwit: Good question. And even if Clapper is completely blameless (which I don’t necessarily buy), why put him in charge of creating a panel to improve transparency? According to the administration, the whole issue is optics. Well, they’re adding to the problem with this move.
gogol's wife
@handsmile:
But it’s Girl Crazy at 8:00 tonight. I hope Judy singing Gershwin isn’t nails-on-the-blackboard for you! I feel the same way about Micky. For some reason, Robert Osborne thinks he’s a brilliant actor.
Jane2
@Steeplejack: Excellent suggestion!
Paul in KY
@handsmile: I think he played a fine ‘earnest young goody two shoes’. in his youth.
I Heart Breitbartbees
@Paul in KY: I wonder what Rooney’s old high school classmate, King Edward the Confessor, thought about his performances.
