He’s eyeballing it, and there is some weapons grade catnip up top, but Rosie and Lily are staying awake for some reason and he is being cautious.

That cat has more square feet of living space than I do.
Also, my cat just uses my young son’s bunk bed as a cat tree. Cat gets high perch, son gets purring pet, everyone is happy.

Make sure your camera is set for video.

Steve should like that tree a lot. Lots of levels and places to sit and hide. I also like the blue color. Does it have a ramp to the first level box?
However, you should move it about a foot to the left, away from the end table and the lamp. They are too close. Also change where you have the Cola sign hanging; it might get fixed by Steve. Or he may try to take it down. (Just some ideas based on the Farm Kittens and what they’ve done in their foster home. Cassie has the same tree in the foster kitten room.)

@Ruckus: I don’t see any blood stains in the picture
Princess Leia
I think you should catnip all the way up. Just a little bit on each level all the way up. It is an awesome cat tree!

Congratulations! Hope he’ll use it.

Back from 10 glorious days of almost zero internet access. All’s I know is Manning was convicted and Boss is now Steve.
If someone could give a quick update re Boss–>Steve, would appreciate.

All the populated towers that I know about are in front of windows. Not much inducement without the window.

@eemom:
Steve is too mellow and laid back to be Boss, is the short version.

@MattR:
That may be the reason for the dark carpet color, to hid the blood stains.
Princess Leia
What is the piece on the floor in front of the tree?
MattR
@Ruckus: I probably should have magnified the picture before making my comment. I am pretty sure it is just a shadow, but I could be convinced that is a blood stain on the carpet by the leg of the end table
@Princess Leia: Looks like an extra piece of the tree. Perhaps a ramp between levels that John decided not to attach.

I showed my lady the Amazon pic of that cat rack and her face lit up like a little girl. She began looking around the room for a place to put it. I could swear I heard her thinking that it looks way big enough for me to share with the cat if I get rid of the recliner.
That lamp looks doomed.

Looks pretty scary to me — what no guard rails? Maybe you should put a couple of mattresses under it until he gets used to it.

I’m trying to figure out if that’s a portrait of Charlie Sheen off to the left…

I am reminded of when we moved into our house over 20 years ago. One of the teenagers on the moving team paused from moving stuff into our master bedroom, peeked inside the walk-in closet, and remarked that it was as big as his bedroom at home.
Of course John probably has one of these special storage closets in his home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ZZreXEqSY

Has Steve met the ‘Furminator’ yet?
PurpleGirl
@Bill: Cole wrote about Steve and the furminator last week. He liked it a lot.
Looking at this photo and the Farm Kitten Cam, that board on the floor is probably the ramp to the first level box, which Cole can’t use because of the orientation of the tree in relation to the end table. If you want to see what the tree can look like in use, go to the Farm Kitten cam site:

@Bill: I think Steve was furminated(sp?) before he went the vet. A big success if I remember correctly.

@Bill: Re brushing felines: We are a two-cat household, and have had three of them in a row (18 years and counting) of cats who barely tolerate a bit of brushing, to don’t like it at all.
It’s easier for me to clip their nails than brush them. And this is with a few different brushing devices. Plus all sorts of things like rewarding them with treats afterwards.
Any ideas?
(I am aware of all “cat item purchase price inverse relationship” traditions, i.e. the more something I buy for my cat costs the more chance the cat won’t like it.)
Josie
@PurpleGirl:
You are right about moving the tree and the Coke sign. The tree could be angled to the left so that access to the first level box is better and there is more space all around. My cats tend to like space around anything they climb on rather than to have it hemmed in like that.
WereBear
@ThresherK: Brushing is so STIMULATING that a lot of cats can’t take it; then they react with claws and biting. They can’t help it.
With such cats I do one stroke at a time; keep the implement handy, bring it out with a treat or petting session, and do one stroke…. hours later, another stroke, higher up the body…. hours later, move more towards the head…
By the time we get to the head (no rush!) they discover the bliss of having their head and face combed, even if we have to use another implement. This becomes the reward, and we can get more done at a session, because they will sit still longer to get to the face skritching.
A classic mistake humans don’t know they are making is to look at cat brushing the way they do washing a big frying pan; let’s get this thing done.
While the cat keenly feels every single tooth in the comb, every hair in the brush, and is driven crazy by it.
Think of what we are doing as those nightmarish radiation-washing scenes in Silkwood; and you will go a lot easier during cat brushing!

I agree that the lamp is doomed. Also whatever is to the right of the cat tree, on the border of the photo.
Sometimes I’ve watched our cat, trying to figure out how he sees the world in terms of paths, ways of passage from one location to another. I haven’t figured it out, but if Steve were our cat, he’d be standing on the arm of the couch, thinking about whether he can hit that middle box. He’d give it a shot, with unpredictable results.

@eemom:
Hey, we enjoyed it too.
What? You set yourself up for that.
And Cole thought Boss didn’t fit, named him for The Tao of Steve something something. I didn’t get it either.

@RSA:
I think it would look easily reachable with a parcour off the lamp.

that looks like a pretty sturdy cat tree, but if you can, it should be in a corner, supported by at least 2 walls. definitely should not be adjacent to the table/lamp (or at least move the lamp). when standing free, they tend to become rickety as the cat(s) jump up and around on them. and it might end up as cat/dog furniture (my uncle’s jrt has been using the cat perches).

I have one of those as well. Where I located it, the top shelf is about 2′ from the ceiling AC vent and is the truly contested spot of the place. Hell, i wish I could fit up on it myself these brutal August days.

@ThresherK: Maybe not the right brush. My cats absolutely love being brushed. They love it a whole lot more than I do :-)
