Speaking of problems with monogamy, did y’all see that Anthony Weiner apparently kept up with his inappropriate communications with other women AFTER he resigned from Congress?
Ordinarily, I think these kinds of issues are between a politician and his or her spouse, but note the date of Weiner’s son: December 2011. So apparently, both immediately before and immediately after Huma Abedin gave birth to his son, Weiner was out trying to seduce other women.
This guy is pond scum.

The Rijks museum in Holland had an idea:
Let’s bring the art to the people and then, hopefully,
they will come to see more – at the museum.
They took one Rembrandt painting from 1642,
Guards of the Night and brought to life the characters in it,
placed them in a busy mall and the rest you can see for yourself!

I watched Real Time last night and almost felt sorry for Nordquist by the end of the show. Almost. I don’t really understand why he would want to even go on that show. He got taken apart by Bill Maher, Dan Savage, and even Rula Jabreal (sp?) from the beginning all the way to the end. In the discussion about race and justice around the Trayvon Martin situation, he trotted out the right-wing school choice argument and got schooled by Jabreal. He pulled some bit of anecdotal “data” out of his ass and got schooled by Maher. Savage just made him look terrible. And the big speech on ignorant republican “experts” at the end of New Rules must have had him and Connie Mack squirming in their chairs. It was a pleasure to behold.

However, they tagged it “addiction,” which is a bit strong for a sarcastic post about quitting smoking. So now I’m imagining determined 12-steppers clicking through, expecting a blog full of personal stories about struggle and inspiration, and finding me a non-inspirational disappointment.

@burnspbesq:
I don’t think there are bright lines for deciding when a politician’s private behavior renders his public judgment untrustworthy, so I’m not going to be able to offer a robust theory. This is a matter of judgment, and there are shades of gray.
But does that mean that nothing a politician does in his private life–so long as it’s legal–could shake your faith in his or her fitness for a position of public trust? That strikes me as an extreme position.
So, for example, just cheating on your spouse doesn’t suggest you’re unfit for public office. But if you get busted in a national scandal for sending dirty pictures, resign, and then right away start doing it again, even while planning your political rehabilitation, I’m starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with you. And if you do this all right before and after the birth of your child, I’m pretty sure there’s something wrong with you, and I don’t trust you.
Having been through the experience with my wife giving birth to two kids, I think for any decent guy, it’s a time of amazing terror and joy. The idea that you’re cavorting around with younger women through dirty talk before and after your wife goes through this excruciating and dangerous experience makes you the kind of guy I don’t like or trust, and I don’t want you to be making the judgment calls behind closed doors on my behalf.
Robust? No. But I don’t think assessing people works on robust theories.

I got stung by a wasp this afternoon while refilling a bird feeder. On my left hand, by my ring finger. Thank God I thought to take my wedding rings off because my hand has swollen to a grotesque size and is now itching like crazy.

@Southern Beale: How awful! I’m guessing you aren’t allergic to them because you would know it by now. Any difficulty breathing? If so, call 911.
WebMD says to remove the stinger by scraping with a fingernail or using tweezers. Ice can help with the swelling. General ice therapy is 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, repeat. You can use frozen vegetables. Make sure you have some kind of cloth between your skin and the ice to protect the skin. For itchiness, it says to use an antihistamine or calamine lotion. Also, you can take ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory.

Its not unusual to have that kind of reaction, my mom used to get that. Not red or light-headed or short of breath. Just my hand hurts and is swollen (I’m sure one has something to do with the other). Just REALLY glad I took my rings off or I’d be on my way to a jeweler to get the damn things cut off.
Little fucker just landed on my hand and stung me good. Can wasps sting more than once? I think this one did.
Schlemizel
@Violet:
I have not seen wasps leave stingers like bees do. A wasp has no barb so they can withdraw it & sting again; for bees stinging is fatal. The barb leaves the stinger in & pulls out organs when the bee flys off. But you should check it anyway. With bees the nerves keep delivering toxin as long as they can even after they have been ripped out of the bee.
Violet
@Southern Beale: No, an epi-pen is a prescription medication. It’s a shot of epinephrine.
Southern Beale
@Violet:
I have a cold pack in the freezer will try that … THANKS
Violet
@Southern Beale: The WebMD article also says to elevate the affected area if you can. Since it’s your hand, you should be able to do that. Get a table and pile some books or something on it and rest your hand/arm on that to keep it somewhat elevated. You can do the icing thing simultaneously.
Schlemizel
@Southern Beale:
No, its Rx – its a self-injecting epinephrine rig.
You could take benedril too – when you go to the ER those are the two things they give you, epi & benadril

I had a scare a few weeks ago. One stung me on the end of my nose. Painful and after, my face looked very strange.
I googled all the medical sites and most tell you to ice the swelling, take something like Benadryl “if you are allergic” and then wait for the swelling to go down. However, if you experience the “classic signs of severe allergic reaction” (stated several times in comments above) go to the ER.
I iced my nose for most of the rest of the day and the swelling did go down several hours later.
Violet
@Southern Beale: The internet tells me that yes, wasps can sting more than once, unlike bees. Sorry that happened to you.
The People’s Pharmacy says you can mix vinegar and baking soda into a paste, which can help with the stinging. And this article says to try an onion.

I have no idea if I am allergic to bees & wasps or not. I am allergic to fire ants though & they are cousins. When in FLA I was stung on several occasions by the little bastards. Then one time I had the reaction & went to the ER. I know what Anaphylactic shock is & all its symptoms. I described them to the admitting nurse quiet clearly but she chose to focus on the tightness in my chest. They rushed me in and some clown set me up for an EKG . . . but he was not sure where the leads went & kept moving them around. He ran a strip & left. Minutes later a dr. comes in in a panic “HAVE YOU EVER HAD A HEART ATTACK? IS THERE A HISTORY OF HEART DISEASE IN YOUR FAMILY?” I got the nitro & other crap & was kept over night. The next day I was given a stress test & while running on the tread mill noticed the dr. there giving the EKG strip the fish eye. I asked him if it looked off & he asked why so I told him about the dummy that ran it. He looked up at me and said “You can get off that thing now” They sent me home – this was the norm for every medical event we had while I was in FLorida, quacks, losers and Caribbean med school drop out the whole lot of them

Haven’t seen this reported anywhere except one of my professional journals (which is behind a paywall), but apparently Darrell Issa is preparing to open a new front in his attempt to find a scandal in the way right-wing 501(c)(4)s have to deal with the regulatory apparatus.
Apparently his knickers are in a twist because somebody (i.e., Barney Frank) lobbied the SEC to adopt a rule (against the recommendation of the commission staff) to require public companies to disclose their contributions to 501(c)(4)s.
I really want to see Issa go one-on-two against Barney Frank and Mary Jo White. The blood will be ankle-deep when they’re done with him.

Old-time home remedy (which does help) is get a small amount of tobacco (non-mentholated), dampen it with saliva into a sort of paste, and slap that on the site of the sting like a tiny poultice and leave it there for 10 or 15 minutes. It really does draw out some of the nastiness.
Best done soon after being stung, but can’t hurt to try it even though some time has passed. Has always been of benefit to me in cases of bee sting. Some people have told me that aloe vera will do the same thing, but have never tested that out.
Cheryl from Maryland
@EconWatcher: Take Benedryl. If swelling continues, Epi-Pen. Don’t have an Epi-Pen — go to the emergency room. Also, take time later to discuss this with your GP in case you need an Epi-Pen. My mother had a serious reaction to a bee sting, and that led to bad shellfish allergies, anaphylatic shock to a medication, serious trouble.

First off IANAD. The following is my experience.
I am strongly allergic to bee and wasp stings and have an epi pen(2 actually) but I’ve never had to use it. Benedryl and ice if done promptly usually does the trick. But then I haven’t been stung since ’76 and at that time Benedryl was also prescription so I went to the ER as needed.
If in doubt, go to the ER. You won’t know your are allergic until you get stung and many don’t know. That’s what happened to me when I was 7. Got stung didn’t know what it was and by time I told my parents(about an hour later) that something was wrong, I was in deep shit. They took me to the ER, but I don’t remember all that happened there. But I got stung on my hip and have had arthritis there for decades. Now it is painful most every day.
