So we’re having the first Boston / RI / southern NH meet-up tomorrow, Wednesday, at Watch City Brewing in Waltham, starting around 7-ish. Commentor and instigator Lahke has printed out a picture of Tunch to identify our table, and I’ve got some green balloons. A dozen or so people have said they plan to join us, and all BJ readers / lurkers are welcome!
***********
Several commentors in the Minneapolis-St.Paul area have talked about getting together. So have a couple of people in Phoenix, and at least one Denver commentor. I know there are clusters in other cities, too also. Anybody interested, please speak up — if you like, you can email me and I’ll forward addresses so nobody has to worry about spambots.

What else needs to be talked about this evening?

The All Star Game?

The relentless heat has me yearning for winter.

@schrodinger’s cat: It’s nuts, July 16th and we were a little chilly on our dawn walk. Never seen that in Georgia!
Ted & Hellen
See you guys there!
Gin & Tonic
What else? How about the New York Fucking Knickerbockers signing Ron Fucking Artest? I get that you want to let him play out his waning years in his hometown, but Jesus, he was released. You didn’t have to pick him up.
schrodinger's cat
@raven: I was out watering the plants right now and by the time I came in I was soaked in sweat. It is 81 right now but feels like 86.
Baud
@Ted & Hellen:
:-)

Anyone else using Chrome and having it report BJ as a malware site? It just started a little while ago:
ETA: Valdeyn @3

@raven: Here in the Dallas area, the current temp is 77. As far as I can tell it got up to 90 today, and tomorrow’s high is supposed to be 88. Our normal low this time of year is about 80.
ETA: The comment is supposed to imply that this is unseasonably cool. We should be in the “how many days will it be above 100” stretch right now.
//
Speaking of Dallas, are there enough people in the Metroplex that could do a meet somewhere?
p.a.
I remember heat waves, but this unrelenting humidity seems different. And without any thunderstorms. Not one near me since the heat moved in.
Gin & Tonic
@Central Planning: Subject of at least two threads downstairs.
Valdeyn
@Central Planning: yup. see my comment #3 with full information… Looks like server domain were flagged and not necessarily the BJ domain itself.

@Gin & Tonic: cool beans. I was busy cooking and slow on my blogroll checks. Thanks :)
Central Planning
Yeah, I realize I was late to the party now. I’m more of a top-down guy :)
raven
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): Ah, the Metroplex, makes me think of the WPAB truck driver radio and Midnight Trucking Radio Network,
PsiFighter37
@Ted & Hellen: you better submit to a shit-ton of noogies to atone for some of the shit you’ve posted here.
In other news, I will be in Las Vegas the 2nd weekend of August, and Kona, Hawaii, the following weekend. If there’s a quorum, I will check with my traveling parties what permissiveness I have to check in with you all.
I may also be around in California again, either in October or November.
Meetups FTW

@Gin & Tonic:
Watching Metta, Melo-noma, JR Smith, and Stoudemire all try to coexist will be funny. And Metta is the only one with any championship experience. LOL.
Turbulence
I’m going to try and attend the Boston meetup….
PsiFighter37
@Gin & Tonic: If they don’t have to pay him (Lakers still pay him $7mm), why not? He actually got better last year.
Plus, it may help the Knicks to have someone who acts like they care.
Gin & Tonic
@RobertDSC-PowerMac G5 Dual: For some definitions of funny, I guess. Probably more amusing for the rest of the Eastern conference than for Knicks fans.
JPL
@Central Planning: Internet explorer is okay. Mistermix is working on the problem with Chrome and Firefox
Redshirt
@schrodinger’s cat: I had the same thought today, then I thought “Self, you’re an idiot – this past winter sucked!”.
So, bring on the heat and the bugs and the jungle and the ticks!
Gin & Tonic
@PsiFighter37: They will be paying him, in addition to the $7m the Lakers are paying. He’s over the hill. They should have signed him out of St. John’s in 99, but now, let him walk is my opinion.
Cassidy
@PsiFighter37: Shit, a short walk in front of a fast moving train isn’t good enough.
Poopyman
@Redshirt: You can keep the ticks. I pulled three outta me during the last part of June. None so far in July, but I’m spending less time out there in this crap. It’s currently only 79, down from 93 earlier, but the dew point is 76, making it … rather murky.
Just Some Fuckhead
Dammit, already going to a Tupperware party. Hoist a half dozen or so for me. I’m a heavy drinker.
schrodinger's cat
@Redshirt: You are so right, we got way too much snow this winter and I was complaining about it back in March.
ETA: It is going to hit 97 on Friday, I am thinking of to spending the day in the pool like a water buffalo.
raven
@Cassidy: It might be worth some FF miles to get up there with a dull deer antler!
Redshirt
@Poopyman: I’m developing a real neurosis regarding ticks, sadly. It’s really bugging me. Like some meth head, I feel like I have them on me all the time. And often I do! I work out in the woods alot, completely covered, and then do an extensive tick check when I return. And yet, a handful of times, hours later, boom! A tick crawling up my thigh, or on the back of my neck. The worst was a couple of nights ago when I woke from a sound sleep with a BANG at 5 am because, yep: Tick crawling up my leg.
I’m thinking of burning down all my woods and paving everything.
raven
@Redshirt: I got one on my dick about 15 years ago, no fun.
schrodinger's cat
I made some pita bread at home today, bad idea, since I had to crank up the oven to 500F. The bread was wonderful, although the kitchen resembled the seventh circle of hell.
Redshirt
@raven: Fun! At least back then, Lyme’s Disease was not a big deal.
I read yesterday an average male deer has about a hundred ticks on his balls alone. Yay!
And poor moose – an estimated 100,000 ticks on their body. No wonder they go crazy in the Summer.
Helen
@raven: I live 3 miles from Citifield and I had no idea it was here until this evening. On my way home from work the subway conductor was directing people “going to tonight’s All Star game at Citifield” Go figure.
Redshirt
@schrodinger’s cat: I’m right there with you. Basements are wonderful in this weather.
But I rather enjoy the task of trying to cool my house rather than the brutal death march of trying to keep it warm when it’s 20 below with 30MPH winds.

This IS good news for John McCain:
raven
@Helen: Bright Lights, Big City. . .
Belafon (formerly anonevent)
@raven: I will openly give McCain credit if he shivs McConnell between the ribs.
JPL
@raven: I pulled one out of my ear lobe the other night. It’s the first tick that I’ve had in decades…
raven
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): Looks like he did!
raven
@JPL: Ack!
PsiFighter37
@raven: Maybe he’s back to the old McCain we all know and love, the version between 2000 and pre-2004 campaign who seemed to love peeing slightly off-center from the GOP’s Sauronic eye.
Belafon (formerly anonevent)
And maybe we’re back.
I noticed the Washington Monthly’s editors tweeted about Tunch today.

Testing…Testing…1, 2, 3…Is this thing on?
CatHairEverywhere
I was trying to post this downthread right when the site went down. This is an open thread, right?
This will out me as a crazy cat lady for sure, but I have seen some great ideas for outdoor enclosures lately. I am thinking of building one for my kitties, because they insist on going outside and I worry about them. Thought some of you, especially those in coyote-prone areas, might want to build something like this for your kitties. http://cuckoo4design.blogspot.com/2012/05/cuckoo-for-my-cats.html

Works. Although Firefox is still with the ‘reported attack site’ jazz.
So the red dachshund (seniorish rescue) went in to get her shots today. Someone (not moi) had scheduled both her and my boy to come in on the same day which is a bit like deciding to put out your fire with a flash flood. So I kept my boy outside walking him around in circles for 45 minutes, wearing out any excitement so he would be calm inside, while the other one got her shots. So I got inside and the vet doing an upsell song and dance with my boy while the red dog is now spazzing out trying to escape. So I took her outside, and was walking around, and her ear had flipped on her head and I saw a spot. I was annoyed that they had missed this whatever it was on the inside of her ear, so I went to check and it was a deer tick.
Good thing she got her Lyme shot beforehand, I guess.

@Helen:
I love riding the number 7 train to games at Citi Field.
As a Met fan, I hate the guy, but it has to be said: Mariano Rivera is the best relief pitcher ever.
RobertDSC-PowerMac G5 Dual
+1
The only Yankees jersey I own, and I’ve been a fan of theirs for just over a decade now, is Rivera’s from the 2009 WS winning season. I’m going to miss him when he’s gone.

The US got the result tonight against Costa Rica, but Courtney Campbell needs to be stripped of his FIFA referee’s credential. He was gawd-awful.

@PsiFighter37:
I wouldn’t count on it. McGrumpy’s making a play for something.
slhanlon
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): I am stuck in Amarillo, and would definitely drive down to Dallas or up to Oklahoma City, if given enough notice on the meeting place.
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): OMG, we’re hotter than Texas here in South PA? Arggh.
It’s so hot we almost put a window air conditioner in our bedroom for the first time since we had it built with our addition. But … we got lazy. I’ve got the window fan sucking cool (70) air into the bedroom and that might do it. Plus the ceiling fan, of course.
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
@PsiFighter37: So … you’re the designated meetup guy. If Psi37 ain’t there, it ain’t happening. I likes it. Do you ever get to Baltimore/DC?
ETA: BSoSR +2. Cabernet on ice, it’s that hot.
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
@raven: Colleague of mine decided it was time to marry the girl after he got home from a day in the field and she soldiered up for the dreaded removal of the deer tick from the butt crack.
reality-based
@Redshirt: well, the ones you can see and pick off you aren’t the problem – I NOW realize –
it’s the damn infinitesimal deer tick from last summer, that made itself at home behind my ear – despite a shower and shampoo after I came in – and gave me Lyme disease. Also babesiosis. – that is the tick from hell.
Just swallowed the third doxycyclene of the day. Tomorrow, they want me to add in some Bactrim, see if the combo works.
Moral – if you find a deer tick – not a wood tick – go get the damn pills right away and take them faithfully. Because I never got a rash – 50% of people don’t – my GP said I should “wait and see if I got sick.”
thanks a lot, jerk – because you didn’t give me the preventive dose of doxy, which they hand out like candy for teenagers with acne, I get to ache in every joint, have my face twitch on occasion, and have the energy level of a slug?
done venting – just learn from my sad experience!
ticks are the dirty needles of nature. I’m just saying. (and I used to pay them no nevermind, pick’em off and proceed with life. )
reality-based
@JPL: wood tick or deer tick? See my rant, above – well, see it if I if I get out of moderation. Lyme disease makes me profane, evidently.

I’m interested in a Phoenix meet up

Ah, shit. I missed it. I really should check here more often. I’m only about 20-25 miles from Waltham and I’ve been past the Watch City Brewery many times. Moody Street’s a fabulous place to get something to eat.
