You guys are the best, seriously. I just got an email from Evelyn at MARC:
Hi John,
Just heard back from MARC in just 24 hours, BJ folks have made over 250 donations totaling over $7,750 dollars and donations are still arriving…They will give me another update total tomorrow.
They are so very grateful for the generous donations that they so desperately need.
And what a testament to you and Tunch from the BJ folks and how much they care for you.
Thanks again so much,
The idea that Tunch’s untimely and violent death is going to save so many animals and give so many cats and dogs the opportunities to live in loving forever homes has sparked another round of tears, but in this case, happy ones. I can’t than you all enough.
Thanks to the other Evelyn for the great picture of Tunch.
Yatsuno
Love the picture. And love the help MARC is getting. My help will have to wait until next pay cycle (FY Repubs) but I will kick in what I can.
smith
That’s awesome to hear. I’ll be donating once I get paid later this week.
SiubhanDuinne
I am proud and happy to have been a small part of this incredible total. And, let’s face it, chances are I wouldn’t have otherwise donated to MARC until the holidays. Tunch lives!
LT
Gah. This roller coaster is too much.
Yatsuno
@SiubhanDuinne: July 14th: Bastille Day and Tunch Day. Let it be so.
SiubhanDuinne
@efgoldman: Some of us (JPL and I, for sure, maybe others) noted that it’s hard if not downright impossible to find a place on the donation page where you can indicate that you’re contributing “in honour of” or “in memory of.” I know I, and I’m pretty sure JPL, sent separate emails to MARC requesting that they made sure our donations were to celebrate the Great and Awesome Tunch. But maybe there were some that didn’t get through. I’ll bet, when all is said and done, the Tunch-related contributions will be north of $10K, easy.

Wings? Tunch deserves a jetpack.

What a wonderful tribute to Tunch and to you too, John. So glad to hear such sadness can give way to such hope. That picture is just gorgeous. Exactly as I imagine Tunch is.
Emerald
That is a great pic, and an amazing likeness. And yes, the MARC donations are probably larger than that. I just checked the RIP thread–it’s up to 990 comments.
I have not yet made my donation, as I won’t have an actual income for several months yet. However, when I have some change (even if I don’t) I will at that time make my donation. I will not forget. I’ve got all the links.
Tunch is a hero. (And so are you)

Loooong time lurker. Just donated in memory of Tunch. May he rest forever in peace…and tuna.

Violet
@dr. bloor: Pew pew pew!

Done. There are so many animals suffering, so I’m glad something good will come out of this.
Yatsuno
@Violet: Tunch deserves no less than his own anthem commissioned for him. And it must have more verses than the Greek National Anthem.

@zombie rotten mcdonald: Floofy tails and jetpacks are a bad match. Just sayin’.
Comrade Mary
Oh, that’s wonderful! I donated what I could (that is, not very much, thanks a lot, slow-paying clients), but if there’s a whole lot of us donating even a little, it does accumulate. $10k or so will buy a LOT of kibble.
Jackie
We lost a cat in the same way a few months ago. As per usual, I stuffed my emotions and kept together. Then I read about Tunch and lost it. Finally the tears. Grief for two. It gave me some comfort to donate in memory of both. And there is always a good reason to give to animal rescue groups anyway.
Scott S.
MARC got a donation from me today, along with Planned Parenthood of Texas and the NAACP. I should also send some checks to the CBLDF and the HERO Initiative, but I’ll have to wait ’til the mailbox dries out a little…
(And yeah, that’s an amazing, beautiful pic of Tunch.)
Emdee
It was Tunch’s slothful and domineering life that has already led to the so many animals entering their forever homes, and what happened yesterday will not even slow that down.
If that cat knew how many kitties and doggies he saved, he’d have demanded to eat only fresh virgin narwhal. And then he would’ve just knocked it onto the floor for a confused Rosie and Lilly.
I said it, I meant it: Tunch is a goddamn hero. We need that word under his Shep Fairey-like portrait.
Larkspur
I just clicked over from making a donation there via PayPal. I figured there’d be a decent Tunch bump, but it’s more than decent – it’s kind of awesome.
Comrade Mary
And, no lie, when I first looked at the small version of that lovely illustration, I didn’t see angel wings, I saw the flukes of a whale’s tail.
NOT A FAT TUNCH JOKE: I just thought I was seeing a picture of a whale taking Tunch for a ride before my eyes finally interpreted things appropriately.

Was at Kailua beach yesterday, and took a break from the kids to go to the restroom and check BJ. Top story: RIP Tunch. So shocking and so sad. Not even a beautiful day at a beautiful beach could fix my mood after reading that. My sincere condolences, JC.

@Comrade Mary: Whatever you are on, will u share naow plz?

I wish Lord Byron were with us to write Tunch a tribute of the quality he deserves, but since he isn’t, the best I can do is the following, not doggerel, but catterel:
We gather here to mourn for Tunch
Who loved grumpy John G. a whole big bunch
Tunch also loved to crunch and munch
His dinner, breakfast, and then his lunch
“Great cats” comprise a whole big bunch
But the best of them all, we think, was Tunch.
Tara the Antisocial Social Worker
I’m glad it’s bringing you comfort, John, and those rescued animals will bring joy to other lives as well.
Hugs to you and the dawgs.

I just can’t believe the whole thing. What a horrible weekend, and I don’t understand any of it. I guess that other needy critters will benefit – thanks MARC – but why couldn’t Dick Cheney have met a woodchipper or something? Why Tunch? Aaaaaargghhhh!
John O
What a terrific picture! Should be worked into the masthead if you ask me, by someone who can do those things.
And what great, impressive news. Did some loose math…call it 1000 comments on the RIP thread, many no doubt repeat customers, but for the sake of simplicity and to catch the stragglers who got the news later, figure 250/~1000, which is just a spectacular rate of participation. $10K is very realistic, and that is real money.
Warms my heart is all it does.

@Comrade Mary: Did you use the old nym? AFAIK it’s still despised by FYWP.
Comrade Mary

I donated through PayPal and dedicated it to Tunchie in the ‘special message’ section. Even in his death, Tunch will continue to do great things in helping other animals. Love this pic.
@Yatsuno: Thanks, hon, for letting me know.

How is your sister taking this? Im guessing she’s loaded with guilt. I cannot imagine the guilt if one of our dogs caused such an event on a family friend. Hope she’s OK….

Glenn Greenwald was tweeting the link to your post John, so I’m betting that helped as well. That was a stand-up move on Glenn’s part, and I don’t always see eye to eye with him on things.

What a beautiful picture of Tunch. Still very sad about his passing but it’s so great to know how many other animals he will be helping. A mighty cat!

I almost forgot. Tunch’s death was mentioned on Daily Kos.
I firmly believe he is spilling over Saint Francis’s lap even now. (Tunch, that is. Not Kos.)
melissaD
Just when I thought I had cried it out, I open BJ to the graphic of Tunch Angelic and the news of the phenomenal fundraising which followed the news of his passing. What a marvelous boy to inspire such responses. He is Hero Cat whose global plan maybe can give you solace even in the horror of his passing.
beabea
@Jackie: Your comment could have been written by me, in every detail. Same thing with my cat a few months ago. Then yesterday, a torrent of tears that seemed out of proportion being for a cat I only knew from the internet. Except they weren’t.
The big, floofy fellow has helped so many animals, and will now help countless more. But I think he also helped at least a few humans in unexpected ways.

Just had another good cry, for Tunch and for MARC and for my own Best Cat Shayna, gone 3 years now.
Shayna was a tiny but fierce kitty on death row at the Los Angeles shelter, feral and crazy with everyone but me for a long time. She helped me survive my own darkest times, and we had 14 excellent years. I still miss the way she would slowly take over my whole pillow every night.
Take your time with your grief, John, and know that Tunch inspired a lot of good in you and in the world. Through that, you two saved a tremendous number of other animals as well. I would definitely like to see a “HERO” mug with Tunch’s face on it!
Angela
Love this drawing of Tunch, long live Tunch.

@Punchy:
That is what I was thinking, I know that John’s first instinct would have been to kill the fucking dog, but the fact that the dog belonged to his sister has put a whole bunch of fucked up emotions on him. How could you kill the dog when it belongs to your sister who obviously loves it? I cannot even imagine what he is going through.
RedKitten
What a lovely picture and an even lovelier legacy. It’s amazing to think of all of the love we had for Tunch manifesting itself in the love that so many dogs and cats will get to enjoy in their new forever homes.

We should definitely consult with Edna on this, she’s an expert on functional fashion for superheroes like Tunch.

Amazing outpouring of support for MARC, which also gets proceeds from the Balloon Juice store. A a hoodie saying “Tunch is watching you” felt like the right thing to get today (I’ve never owned a hoodie before, and I hope wearing this one will be a reminder of how much we need to change our system of justice and system of gun fetishism, not to mention a beautiful white cat).

Great picture! Great cause. And now I’m weepy again – some joy for what Tunch has generated, some sadness for Tunch’s passing.

Truly sorry for the loss of Tunch.
I could not help but tear up reading John’s account of his burial. My beloved Frodo the cat, who died about four years ago after 17 years as the ruler of our household, is buried in our backyard, in the back of a plot that I have seeded and grown with wildflowers. We can see it from the kitchen. He rests there beneath the small tombstone of a child from the late 1800’s, which I have carted around for over 35 years. Some juvenile delinquents I was in charge of at a residential program in Nashville, TN, at the time, vandalized it from somewhere, and we were not able to determine where to return it, and they would not fess up or claim responsibility. I found it dumped outside the residential quarters after my night shift. Frodo rests beneath it now, wrapped in the pink soft blanket he spent his final couple of weeks sleeping on, and on which he died while we were holding him.
I hope John has some idea of how much he is respected for his unvarnished and open expressions of his love for his animals. I consider such emotions the sign of a good and decent human being, a state that would produce a better world for all if it were more the norm.
I just chipped in $20 for the MARC. A good cause.
I tipped my evening scotch double to Tunch. May others do the same.

Just imagine all of the good from such a terrible accident. Tunch’s memory will make a difference in so many animal’s lives. And their lucky people.
Nothing beats turning tragedy into legacy..

@SiubhanDuinne: I had the same problem. I sent a note that the donation was in honor of LORD TUNCH and GENERAL STUCK. Sounds rather 18th century. I’m so glad to hear about the amazing outpouring from folks around cyberspace. Tunch and John are truly loved.
Alison
I have little to spare, but I kicked in a few bucks. I like supporting smaller local organizations like this – they really need every dollar and get as much out of it as they can.
gogol's wife
Mine is being mailed — so the total isn’t final . . .

I gave MARC some money in memory of Tunch and in honor of John. Then went to the two rescue organizations from which I got three of my four cats (the fourth doesn’t take online donations) and gave to them as well.
Nina-the-first
Angelic, impish Tunch, still the the spirit of place. A donation to MARC, for the animals there and the people they will join… sort of Tunch’s/JC’s/BJ’s little Indra’s Net, which I’ll think of as Tunch’s Net.
NCSteve
I just tossed a few bucks at them, without noticing there a way to say it was in memory of Tunch, as well.
I’m not enough of a regular here to qualify as member of the family–mostly, I’m a creature of TPM–but I’ve lurked for years and comment on occasion so I at least qualify as one of the neighbors you wave at as they drive by and chat with about lawn care with on occasion. And this has really just hit me unaccountably hard.
I had to put down my senior girl last winter. In 1998, as an adolescent mother to be, she picked my apartment to have her her kittens in 1998. It wrecked me for weeks, so I’m really feeling for Cole. But this has reminded me of my promise to give the Three Weird Sisters she gave birth to under my desk almost as much petting as they think they need.
So long, Tunch. Hang in there John.
Jackie
@beabea: Ya gotta wonder about our ability to shield ourselves against the full feeling of a loss. John seems able to go there and get it out. Good for him.

I used paypal and there was a place for a note. I also sent them a short email but the bottom line is that it’s not that important to me that I know it went to a specific pot. The point is to honor the cat and John.

And John, Strange wants you to know he sends his sympathies and thanks you for your help when he and his kitties needed you. Blessings.

John, I am so sorry about Tunch. What a lucky boy he was to have such a dedicated owner with a great sense of humor for his antics. You are a great storyteller and make us all feel that we knew him intimately. We at MARC are so grateful that you are thinking of the homeless animals during such a sad time. We will put every cent to good use, and will come up with some way to honor Tunch specifically.
Rest assured that we will make sure all donations this weekend are in honor of Tunch. Its been a few weeks since we actually got a donation, so we know for certain that all the donations coming in are in his honor. :-)
Thank you all!

Sweet picture. Wife’s sister had three cats and when she passed away we were able to find somebody willing to adopt them all. She also collected silly “cat angel” prints, but they seemed very appropriate whenever we’d lose one of our furry friends.

Giving to MARC is good, but don’t forget your local Humane Societies. They need help as well. Most all my animals have been adopted from the Humane Society, and I give them a donation out of every paycheck I get.

Oh fuck. I’ve been away from computer all weekend and what terrible news to come back to. From a mostly lurker, I’m so so so sorry about Tunch. It made me squeeze my own cat a little closer and he totally hates that.
I will make a donation to MARC and best wishes to you, John.
David Koch
1. John do you have any kitty photos of Tunch you can post?
2. Marc Maron wears a shit on his show “Boomer Lives!” in honor of his cat. I think “Tunch Lives!” would be the great basis of merchandise (shirts/poster/calendar/mugs) to fund future animal rescues requests.
3. From the bottom of my heart, I am so, so sorry. We all loved The Notorious C.A.T.

I keep thinking about General Stuck and Charlie, his little lap dog.

I love the idea of the legendary badass Tunch with wings and a halo. May his days be filled with Tuna on Demand…

@billgerat: I was thinking the same thing. All three of my cats have come from the Twin Cities Animal Humane Society. I just paid out my whole paycheck plus some savings to pay a pile of bills, so I can’t afford to donate this month, but I will try to get some donation money to them before the year is over. I was just on their site and they have a box to click if the donation is in memorial to a person or pet. I’ll remember Tunch when I make the donation.

I opted for a local donation instead. I stopped by Petco to get kibble for my overlords and was greeted by a sign that the shelter we adopted the Twin Terrors from was in desperate need of dog food. So we bought them a bag of the good stuff, in lieu of sushi-grade ahi.

John – Once again, I cannot express how sorry I am to hear this news. It is a testament to both Tunch’s spirit and your storytelling to see how many people are as moved as I over the loss of a cat they have never met, owned by a man they have never even spoken to.

Super outcome to an unthinkable event. Proud of all y’all (why the hell am I still all weepy and stuff?)
We’re hosting a pair of budgies for vacationing friends this weekend and I’m keeping Extra Close Tabs on the princess of the house, who has a very strong hunting instinct. Cautionary tale and all.
Admittedly, she doesn’t look like much of a threat but what does a bird weigh, an ounce?

@trollhattan: Dalmatians don’t have the strongest hunting instinct. Then again, she’s a dog, and a budgie makes a nice light snack.

John,
I haven’t been online since yesterday afternoon and just found out about Tunch. Like everyone else, I am devastated. Tunch was the spitting image of possibly the favorite of all the cats I have owned over the years, Foxy. (Well, to be honest, Foxy wasn’t quite as fat.) I loved hearing stories about Tunch. He had such a personality.
All of us who have lost pets know what you are feeling, but I think it is much worse to lose one so suddenly. You have my sincere sympathy. And my suggestion – get another cat ASAP. That’s how I survived losing all my babies.
SIA
@InternetDragons: Indeed.

Wonderful pic. I donated without a memorial yesterday, then downed bottle of Duvel in memory of Tunch and his wonderful, scary glower.
Alison
Folks have mentioned giving to local humane societies and shelters too, which is definitely a good idea, and you should also ask if they can use donations of goods. My local shelter posts their wish list on Facebook, and once a month or so I try to drop stuff off – cat and dog food, beds, toys, but also regular items like laundry detergent, trash bags, batteries. Helps keep them stocked up without anyone having to find time to go to the store.
MikeBoyScout
@MattR: I bet Tunch Ilkin is just fine with that. And Tunch is such a fine name for the Internet’s favorite feline.

Thanks for sharing the good news about the donations.
And thanks for posting a few of Tunch’s best/worst moments and pics
As as I read the sad news last night, one of the first things that ran through my mind was the exploits of the infamous Tunch and Rosie gang. A wicked and resourceful gang with no mercy, and who were lucky enough to be become partners in crime in the household f the perfect, perfectly helpless and hapless mark.
And today I see a post recounting one of their best capers.
Thanks.
Edit: if it makes things better, feel free to post from the Tunch Archive as the spirit moves you. I will enjoy it.
