Late Night Open Thread: Happy Birthday, Amir Khalid!

.

Earlier, on the “Friday Evening OT – Seattle Meet-up Tomorrow” thread, a comment:

Amir Khalid says:

I’m kind of bummed that Yutsano/Yatsuno is organising a Balloon Juice meet-up, on my birthday of all days, and didn’t invite me. Yes, I know it’s in a bar, and Seattle’s out of my way, and I don’t drink and besides it’s Ramadan, but still … Pout.

When I typed Malaysia happy birthday into the YoutTube search bar, the first several clips were variations on the one above. When I tried Happy birthday Seattle, I got the one below. But apart from my technological failures, and in all (Google translate) earnestness: Selamat hari lahir — Pulangan yang banyak gembira!

Happy birthday, Amir! I enjoy reading your posts. And I got Marvin the Siamese to move his head far enough off the keyboard to type this.

I went deep into a wikipedia hole after raven suggested I listen to some Quicksilver Messenger Service. I ended up on a page about Skip Spence and one of the paragraphs was headed:

    Decline: 1970–1999

    70 to 99! That’s some long decline!

  3. BillinGlendaleCA says:

Happy B-Day Amir! You really to add a unique perspective to this little corner of the world.

AL @ top: When I dated a Malay in grad school, I did learn some Malay; Happy Birthday wasn’t among them, so I’m of no assistance. I just wished her a Happy B-Day in English, seemed to suffice.

  4. JCJ says:

Happy Birthday! I will soon be sending you happy thoughts your way from about 1400 km north. Later this month I will visit my wife’s family in Bangkok. Unfortunately that is about as close as we will be able to come to a southeast Asia balloon juice meet up. Hope all is well for you in KL and best wishes for Ramadan! Also, by the time they have the meet up in Seattle it will be Sunday in KL so it won’t be on your birthday anymore.

  5. SiubhanDuinne says:

Have a wonderful, awesome, terrific, very good birthday, Amir. I always love seeing your comments.

  6. Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason says:

Happy Birthday to one of my favorite commenters! Always civil, always to the point, sometimes cutting, and frequently funny. You know us Americans better than most of us do, it’s uncanny.

    Stick around and post often.

  7. Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason says:

@Jewish Steel: QMS is one of my favorite bands, but unfortunately it’s the first lineup with Cippolina and Gary Duncan. They only did two albums, but
    OMG, what great records.

  8. scav says:

Happy Birthday and may it’s bouncing along the tubes and off the International date line etc ensure these greetings arrive at at a time you can make proper use of them and in not too battered a state.

  9. Soonergrunt says:

    Happy birthday, Sir.
Thank you so much for your contributions to this blog. I always read your comments because I know they make me smarter.

  10. max says:

    Happy Birthday, dude.

    max
[‘Bad week here, so I’ll leave it at that. Hope you’re having a better time than I am.’]

  11. Amir Khalid says:

    Oh dear. I have bungled.

My birthday actually coincides with the Boston meet-up. Not the Seattle one. Sorry. But I’ll still accept the good wishes, if that’s okay with you guys.

  12. PsiFighter37 says:

    Happy birthday!

I’m at the Four Seasons across from Pike Brewing, sipping on an IPA. Yeehaw

  13. Pink Snapdragon says:

It may not be Amir’s actual birthday, but it is mine! I think it is going to be good being 65.

  14. JGabriel says:

Amir. Happy Birthday! It doesn’t get said often enough, but you always bring a different, and frequently thought-provoking, perspective to this place. I’m glad you post here, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one. So, have a good birthday.

    Oh.

Jeepers, now I feel all misled and exposed.

  16. Elizabelle says:

Amir Khalid: Happy Birthday whenever the great day falls.

Any day you are here, snarking civilly, is a present for all of us.

  17. Dead Ernest says:

    Happiest Birthday wishes Amir!
Another who appreciates the charm, wit, warmth and grace by which you enhance this place. Happy Birthday and Thanks as well.

Happy Birthday Amir, and blessings for (on?) Ramadan
And Happy 65th Birthday to you to Pink!

    @raven

Good night, Mrs.Calabash, wherever you are.

Possibly the worst movie team-up ever conceived was the forced pairing by MGM of Jimmy Durante and Buster Keaton for several eminently forgettable films.

Zacherle (a/ka Zacherley, a/k/a Zakerly) was the “Cool Ghoul” host of schlock horror movies, mostly airing in NY and Phila. A must-watch for the milk and cookies set.

Met him once at a reception for a movie opening. Still have no idea what it was he ordered from the bar, but whatever it was, it was a dingy gray drink. Always in character, and a pussycat of a gentleman.

He’s still dabbling in show biz, at age 95.

Happy birthday (whichever day it actually is) to Amir Khalid, one of the classiest commenters in the joint!

    Birthday greetings to Pink Snapdragon!

  22. SarahT says:

Sorry in advance, but I really care far more about the previous thread (Malala). If this young woman who has been through hell still has the courage to stand up, then what the * is wrong with us ? And why the * do we take so much for granted ?

Do you all think for one minute that John Lewis thought that in 2013 he’d STILL be fighting voter I.D. battles ? And did my mother & her activist friends think their grandchildren would have to re-fight anti-choice laws ? HELL NO. We cannot for even one minute let up ! These people are relentless – and so must we be !

Cynicism is easy (also funny), but fighting for what’s right ? SO hard. But SO worth it.

End of rant. Sorry. Carry on.

  23. Thlayli says:

How much more Balloon Juice could this thread be?

“HAPPY BIRTHD … uh, never mind.”

    None. None more Balloon Juice.

  24. WereBear says:

Happy Birthday Amir Khalid, and that International Dateline thing is only an imaginary line!

Happy Birthday Pink Snapdragon, and may your assumption come true!

  25. Ferdzy says:

I rarely comment, but have to say Happy Birthday – whenever that may be! – to a commentor I always read with great pleasure. Happy Birthday Amir Khalid, and Ramadan Mubarak!

  26. hedgehog the occasional commenter says:

    @Svensker:

    Yes, exactly.

happy birthday, AK, from another Yank who looks forward to reading your comments!

    Cue portentous music!

    Seattle Meetup: The Birthdaying

Amir: Um, guys? I kinda got the date wrong.

Cue: sound of needle scratching across record; music halts, then cautiously starts up again.

Boston Meetup: The Birthdaying II – We Mean It This Time

    Happy birthday, Amir!

  28. lojasmo says:

    @Amir Khalid:

Ah, I was just going to say “happy birthday to one of the smartest commenters here”

    Alas you have betrayed yourself.

    Happy early birthday.

  29. Jay C says:

How come my # 73 is in moderation?
Is it ‘cuz I used weird foreign characters in Amir’s b’day greeting?

Not that he’s a weird foreign character or anything…..

  30. SRW1 says:

Alles Gute zum Geburtstag, Amir Kalid, wann immer er auch sein mag, und viele, viele Wiederholungen desselben in der Zukunft.

  31. karen says:

Happy Birthday Amir Khalid, I didn’t know you were from Malaysia so “Mempunyai hari jadi besar dan makan banyak kek!!”

*if the translation doesn’t work, blame Google translate.

  32. sharl says:

    @Amir Khalid:

Is that character a Greek beta or a German S-Z?

A very belated reply: if its position* in the list at this site is any indication (given its neighbors on the list), ß = Greek letter ‘beta’ (small case).

I feel like I damn near learned the Greek alphabet during physical chemistry classes, where they just lurved themselves some Greek letters in various equations and formulas.

*about a third of the way down in the fourth column: using the numeric keypad (nummy lock ON), it is Alt-225.

  33. Elie says:

Happy birthday! I always enjoy your comments and through those appreciating the person you are. Many happy returns…
