@Violet: I wonder how Goodhair is gonna cheat this time to get his bebeh protection bill passed. I think it’s total crap he’s calling another session just for this. But at least it has to go through all the hoops again.

Finally, Matt Patterson and Newsweek speak out about Obama. This is timely and tough. As many of you know, Newsweek has a reputation for being extremely liberal. The fact that their editor saw fit to print the following article about Obama and the one that appears in the latest Newsweek, makes this a truly amazing event, and a news story in and of itself. At last, the truth about our President and his agenda are starting to trickle through the “protective wall” built around him by the liberal media.
OK, this is the explanation for what’s going on in the EXTREMELUY LIBERAL Newsweek. Evidently there is an article by Ferguson and an opinion piece by this Matt person.
I guess I’ll have to look for it next time I go to the eye doctor so I can peer at it from an inch away. My dentist subscribes to higher class of magazines: travel mags for people who would like to be rich enough to travel to Tahiti etc at leisure.
After the overly lengthy and incredibly boring discussion about the Muppets, I have to say this now sounds perverted.
38.
Violet
@pokeyblow: No, what I’m saying is that a lot of older folks end up staying in their homes past the point where they can manage effectively. Their kids don’t always live close and aren’t fully aware of what’s happening. Many times the elderly aren’t doing well and then something happens–health emergency, etc.–and suddenly they have to move NOW. That kind of situation is very hard on everyone involved–especially the elderly individuals. This is not only about the convenience of the families, but the health and happiness of the older people involved.
I’m not saying that everyone needs to do one thing, but everyone needs to be aware of where they are in life and have plans as to what they are going to do as they age and make sure their younger loved ones (kids, grandkids, whoever) are aware of the plans and part of the planning.
When the older person makes the decision themselves to move, it’s much easier on them than if they get forced into it by a health emergency or some other situation. So making those plans yourself instead of saying “I’m going out of here in a box” is much better for everyone involved.
You may not get to go out of your home in a box. You may go out in an ambulance, go to a hospital, into whatever nursing home situation is available at the time, and none of that is your choice. This just happened to the Great Aunt of a friend of mine and it was dire for her and for all the family involved.
So no, not EVERY elderly person needs to downsize and move. But everyone should be aware of where they are in life and have some plans in place. Aging in place is also a choice, but plans need to be made to accommodate the aging person–rails put into the walls of the home, transportation set up, food delivery, etc.
Haha you guys act like since gays can marry in some states now, we can finally ignore the NSA story! I am impressed that people here haven’t seized on the GG hit pieces that are out in the media. I know you guys have enough hate for him as it is, without salacious porn details.

Reading Bobos in Paradise, I realized that it’s not so hard to make money by writing: all you have to do is suck and swallow several million people at once. It’s certainly worked for David Brooks, who sucks like a Black Hole, and could give Linda Lovelace swallowing lessons. He’s making a fortune from this book, which is nothing more than fellatio in print.
Of course, hard-working prostitutes from Night Flight to Tijuana trailer parks are performing the same service for petty cash—but that’s because they can only service one client at a time, while Brooks, with this book, has found a way to suck off every Boomer in America at once. Brooks’ message is simple: “Oh, you’re tho wunnaful. Oh, pleathe, more. Deepuh. Oh yeth, yeth. Let me gobble it all up.” It’s a little garbled—you can’t expect the man to enunciate perfectly with thirty million cocks in his mouth—but the thesis is clear enough: the “Bobos” (Brooks’ witty abbreviation for “bourgeois bohemians”) who control America are the most wonderful people ever.
We’re in rural central Virginia for a wedding. At one point we came upon a very large ranch/horse farm. The gate was flanked by two big banners: one a giant 2012 “Romney/Ryan” lawn flag, and the other a huge “Sportsmen for Allen” sign. Must be home to one of those disgruntled top 1%ers who just know that the election was stolen.
Really, they might as well put up a banner saying “White fool with small penis live here!”

I’m actually much more upset by the Supreme Court’s gutting of the VRA than I am by the notion that my emails are being accumulated by the government. But, again, that’s the difference between people who are interested in civil rights and people who are interested in civil liberties.
Can’t you just kind of wave them around in the air and zot, they’re dry?
We joke that by the time you get them up, come inside & have a glass of tea to recover, they are dry & ready to come in. Not far from true – it takes less than 30 minutes.
Funny how libertarians don’t give a damn about minority voting rights, isn’t it? Greenwald said nothing, Snowden said nothing, Sullivan outsourced his commentary on the topic to Ross Douthat!
Ha, I took another look at it. I can’t read the date, but it looks like August (more letters than June) and it is nothing more than everything that has ever been said about Obama, quoting Podhoretz. I bet it has been circulating since before the last election. Tee hee.
I have friends in San Francisco, and there were points last summer when they had to wear their winter coats in the morning because it was so cold and damp.
Mark Twain apparently never actually said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco,” but there’s more than a grain of truth there.
I hope you’re right. Didn’t know you were dealing with your own health issues, so forgive me for not seeing what you may have posted previously. You’ve been through a lot this year.
Not at all. The first three weeks of June here were the hottest EVER.
There have always been heat waves through here (there was a reason no Native American tribes lived here year-round), but the summers are longer & hotter.
My Nellis story was more along the lines of Jesus, I cannot imagine being a functioning human here without AC. And living in a TENT? Hell, no.
@Mnemosyne: Right, again, another projection. Who is being the troll here? I didn’t like the voting rights decision either. But thanks for assuming that I didn’t care about that.
Yes, but you wanted the 5th section of the VRA destroyed as well.
That’s the difference between you and the decent people here.
116.
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Um, not sure where I said that but if you want to make up shit that’s cool I guess. Also, your balls obsession is weird but hey if that’s your thing I’m not going to judge.
You certainly weren’t commenting about the VRA as obsessively as you were about Snowden. Nor did you make a comment when Wendy Davis did her filibuster to protect the medical freedom of women in Texas. One can’t help but assume that you don’t give a shit about civil rights given your lack of concern about any issue other than Snowden.
So, the new Guardian story of Obama administration keeping everyones emails,
From the Guardian:
a federal judge sitting on the secret surveillance panel called the Fisa court would approve a bulk collection order for internet metadata “every 90 days”.
That’s not your email. That’s only the headers. And they’re public. If your email goes across one of my servers, I can read that part as well. Without it, your email couldn’t ever be routed. Stop peeing your pants just because you only now learned how the internet works.

Again, don’t really care about Snowden, more about the NSA spying on everyone but keep on doing the governments work and make it all about the messenger.
It will be interesting to see in 2014 when the Democrats have another disappointing mid terms and people like you will be blaming Snowden and such, instead of, you know, maybe the Democratic establishment should stop encouraging the government to spy on everyone! But right, its never their fault, it’s cause the base didn’t clap hard enough for the spying. Now there is an assumption.
why do I prattle on about a nothingburger of a story

So it goes.

@NickT: Ya, must be a troll! Talking about something that puts a stain on the political party you worship. Lets keep it only about things that make our party look good!
I could actually be trolling the threads about how awesome Nancy Pelosi is, but then you guys wouldn’t think that was trolling, you would be loving the shit out of it.
@efgoldman: Otherwise they’re going to take us out of this house in boxes.
My grandmother moved from her house of decades into assisted living, and was down on it at first. But then I started getting new topics in my weekly phone calls:
“I don’t have to cook any more! It comes on a tray!”
“I don’t have to do dishes anymore! I just put them back on the tray!”
“You know, I don’t have to worry about keeping a household running any more, and that’s fine with me!”
I realize it’s not at that point yet, but I’m just celebrating getting rid of a storage unit by my husband and I deciding to get rid of things instead of hanging onto them. It’s not just the storage fee every month; it’s how “things” can define you.
Letting go of them, as my grandmother discovered, can be freedom.
It will be interesting to see in 2014 when the Democrats have another disappointing mid terms and people like you will be blaming Snowden and such, instead of, you know, maybe the Democratic establishment should stop encouraging the government to spy on everyone!
Yes, I’m sure a disappointing election result in 2014 would have nothing at all to do with the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act and the subsequent voting restrictions that Republican state legislatures are passing even as we speak. Nope, it will all be because people are so disappointed about government spying that they just don’t show up at the polls, not that they were blocked from being allowed to go to the polls at all.
Heh. My great-aunt, a first-generation Italian immigrant with a large family, discovered the same thing when she moved into assisted living — it meant no more cooking, ever! She made it to 100, so it obviously agreed with her.

138.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Ya see, I made an assumption. Also, VRA for now will mainly make it harder for minorities to vote in places that are already quite deep red anyways, so not sure how this is going to effect 2014 that much. Also, I understand that its easier for you to get riled up about the Supreme Court since you didn’t vote for them, so they aren’t on your team, so this is an issue you will rail about, since it doesn’t make Democrats look bad.
It’s so touching to see your commitment to democracy.
140.
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Right, I must be a libertarian because I care about NSA spying! Only libertarians are allowed to care about that! I guess cause you assume it cannot be a liberal issue, you won’t care about no privacy either. Funny how some of the things 2008 Obama said would make him look like a libertarian in your eyes as well. I guess I would find him in Ron Paul’s ass in 2008 then?
I am sure you know the contents of Ron Paul’s ass better than any of us. You just aren’t very good at your job, little troll. Still, if the libertarian racist losers of the world want to entrust their lost cause to you, why should I complain? I like my chewtoys simple and easy to masticate and expectorate. Please proceed, gibberer.
142.
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Also, love how whenever NSA talk comes up it inevitably leads to Libertarianism!! Ron Paul!! He’s racist! And that just shuts everyone up.
Also, VRA for now will mainly make it harder for minorities to vote in places that are already quite deep red anyways, so not sure how this is going to effect 2014 that much.
I guess you missed all the coverage of non-red states like Ohio and Wisconsin trying to get “voter ID” laws passed. But, hey, why should you care if Republicans manage to turn blue states into red states by restricting who’s allowed to vote? After all, the government might be looking at your metadata!
144.
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Ooh, love how you obsess over balls and asses! It really makes your insults pack so much of a punch! Really makes your (non-existent) for/against NSA spying all that more compelling and reasoned.
So, you never did answer the question with which this merry dialog began:
How did you shoot yourself in the balls exactly?
You don’t need to provide any evidence of how you shot yourself in the foot multiple times. That’s why we have comment threads.
148.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Right, well looks like you already have your whole list of boogeymen to blame for the 2014 midterm results. One thing I know you won’t blame though, is the Democrats doing shitty things, like spying on everyone.
Yes, the losses in 2014 will have absolutely nothing to do with voting changes passed by Republican state legislatures — it will all be because people are mad about government spying.
And thus your facade of I do too care about civil rights crumbles. You can’t be arsed to do anything about other people’s civil rights because you’re upset that the government knows which porn sites you visit.
You can’t be arsed to do anything about other people’s civil rights because you’re upset that the government knows which porn sites you visit.
“All of them, Charlie.”
154.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Tell me how VRA is going to be changed then. This was a decision made by unelected officials. Tell me also when Citizens United is going to be repealed? Oh that’s right, it will have to be done by political leadership, which I haven’t really seen the Democratic party doing much of to change this. I hear sighing of VRA now is going to make it worse for Dems but, how come I don’t hear, well let’s try and fix this? Why is that too bold? As with Citizens United, I believe this VRA will hear a couple people stomping their feet for a little bit, then no real action taken to change it. Also, should one be that unhappy about one court decision, while being super happy about DOMA being repealed? Not really sure if it should be the Judicial Branch of the government that seems to be making a lot of the big political decisions these days.
Yes, it was. So obviously the solution is, what, to make sure that fewer people are allowed to participate in elections because then the magical gnomes will fix everything?
More and better Democrats is the only solution, but we’re not going to get that when people like you keep insisting that elections aren’t important so we should worry more about the NSA than about the VRA.
156.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: In order for there to be more Democrats, the current Democrats need to do their job and inspire more people to vote for them. Depressing their base and making people suspicious of them because they are spying on everyone is not going to get people out to vote for ‘more and better’. The current ones need to be taking stands on issues that are consistent with their Democratic party ideals, not continuing despised Bush era policies. All this does is make people think why bother voting if you are going to end up with the same shit? Especially with young people who are more electronically engaged, and are a big base of the Dems? Turning them away is not going to help.
Again, more projection from you, but I never said elections weren’t important. But its continuing repellent Republican policies that will ensure Democrats continue to have trouble. Just not making sure to get more Democrats.
In order for there to be more Democrats, the current Democrats need to do their job and inspire more people to vote for them.
“Inspiration” means jack shit if your voters are legally blocked from voting in the first place. But, hey, cling to your mythology where it’s all the Democrats’ fault if Republicans in the majority pass legislation preventing people from voting because Democrats should have, like, done something. Or something.
158.
Mnemosyne
100 million Americans don’t have access to broadband internet. But I’m sure they’re more worried about (purported) NSA spying on the people who do have internet access than they are about their own voting rights.
159.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Okay, well keep on clinging to the mythology that its all the Republicans fault and people don’t care about privacy or Obama continuing gross Republican legislation. This is what Democrats need to do, not whine about Republicans. There is always got to be someone else to blame, isn’t there. Where is the Democratic plan to repeal Citizens United? Oh ya, nonexistent. Here we come full circle, if Dem’s are pissed about these civil right subversions why aren’t they trying anything to fight it?
Your whole point is to clap louder for shit and then hopefully that shit will turn into a diamond.
Okay, well keep on clinging to the mythology that its all the Republicans fault and people don’t care about privacy or Obama continuing gross Republican legislation.
People who don’t have access to the internet don’t give a shit about internet privacy.
Your white male privilege is showing again. Who cares if a 90-year-old black woman can’t vote — she’s not on the internet, so she’s not important, amirite?
This is what Democrats need to do, not whine about Republicans.
Wow. You lack even the most basic understanding of how a government operates, don’t you? Yes, when the Republicans are in the majority, Democrats should do, um, something.
It would require a constitutional amendment to change Citizens United. Tell me, how does one go about changing the US Constitution? Can you describe the three ways spelled out in that document? Or would you rather complain about Democrats while ignoring reality?

Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Only 126 million people voted in the 2012 election, so your point is? More people have broadband access than who vote?

@Mnemosyne: When Democrats had majority, then the blame was shifted to the Blue Dogs, it never ends who you have to blame.
163.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Also, you are narrowing it down to internet privacy when this encompasses all media privacy. That 90 year old woman might not have internet but she most likely has a phone, and I bet she isn’t that happy about that being spied on.

@Steeplejack:
After the overly lengthy and incredibly boring discussion about the Muppets, I have to say this now sounds perverted.

NickT
@Socoolsofresh:
Why change your approach now? It’s won you so many converts here, hasn’t it?
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:
Mnemosyne
@WereBear:
Heh. My great-aunt, a first-generation Italian immigrant with a large family, discovered the same thing when she moved into assisted living — it meant no more cooking, ever! She made it to 100, so it obviously agreed with her.

Enforcing? What, little me? Believe me, if I thought you were more than a silly little chewtoy, I’d enforce you back up Ron Paul’s racist ass with a sledgehammer.
NickT
@Socoolsofresh:
It’s so touching to see your commitment to democracy.
Socoolsofresh

Funny how some of the things 2008 Obama said would make him look like a libertarian in your eyes as well. I guess I would find him in Ron Paul’s ass in 2008 then?

I am sure you know the contents of Ron Paul’s ass better than any of us. You just aren’t very good at your job, little troll. Still, if the libertarian racist losers of the world want to entrust their lost cause to you, why should I complain? I like my chewtoys simple and easy to masticate and expectorate. Please proceed, gibberer.
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Also, love how whenever NSA talk comes up it inevitably leads to Libertarianism!! Ron Paul!! He’s racist! And that just shuts everyone up.
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:
I guess you missed all the coverage of non-red states like Ohio and Wisconsin trying to get “voter ID” laws passed. But, hey, why should you care if Republicans manage to turn blue states into red states by restricting who’s allowed to vote? After all, the government might be looking at your metadata!
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Ooh, love how you obsess over balls and asses! It really makes your insults pack so much of a punch! Really makes your (non-existent) for/against NSA spying all that more compelling and reasoned.

@kc:
Great choice–especially this week! I’d not seen that video before, which puts the song in a whole different light.

@Socoolsofresh:
The Us government should go after journalists who can’t figure out how to do their job without committing a felony.
NickT
@Socoolsofresh:
So, you never did answer the question with which this merry dialog began:
How did you shoot yourself in the balls exactly?
You don’t need to provide any evidence of how you shot yourself in the foot multiple times. That’s why we have comment threads.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Right, well looks like you already have your whole list of boogeymen to blame for the 2014 midterm results. One thing I know you won’t blame though, is the Democrats doing shitty things, like spying on everyone.
Socoolsofresh
@burnspbesq: What felony did GG commit?
Socoolsofresh
@NickT: Right, back to balls for you.
NickT
@Socoolsofresh:
So you didn’t have the balls to shoot yourself in the balls? How disappointed Edward Snowden will be!
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:

@Mnemosyne:
“All of them, Charlie.”
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:
“Inspiration” means jack shit if your voters are legally blocked from voting in the first place. But, hey, cling to your mythology where it’s all the Democrats’ fault if Republicans in the majority pass legislation preventing people from voting because Democrats should have, like, done something. Or something.
Mnemosyne
100 million Americans don’t have access to broadband internet. But I’m sure they’re more worried about (purported) NSA spying on the people who do have internet access than they are about their own voting rights.
Mnemosyne
@Socoolsofresh:
People who don’t have access to the internet don’t give a shit about internet privacy.
Your white male privilege is showing again. Who cares if a 90-year-old black woman can’t vote — she’s not on the internet, so she’s not important, amirite?
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: When Democrats had majority, then the blame was shifted to the Blue Dogs, it never ends who you have to blame.
Socoolsofresh
@Mnemosyne: Also, you are narrowing it down to internet privacy when this encompasses all media privacy. That 90 year old woman might not have internet but she most likely has a phone, and I bet she isn’t that happy about that being spied on.

@Mnemosyne:
Actually, I think a federal law defining corporations as not-citizens and removing any and all rights held by citizens from corporations would do it.
Now, how likely THAT is, I can’t say.
