Rob Ford’s press team resigned yesterday. When your crackhead boss calls the press “a bunch of maggots” and fires his chief of staff, (apparently because he went to the police with the crack video story), there just isn’t much that a press office can do.
Other than being interesting in its own right, the Ford scandal is a good benchmark for Matt Drudge, Fox and the rest of the right wing trying to turn little nothingburgers into something-gates. Show Real Americans that Obama smoked some rock with Somali crack dealers, and maybe they’ll pay attention. Otherwise, unless he called the IRS and told them to audit the Tea Party, or sent all the Marines within a thousand miles of Benghazi on liberty as soon as he heard the embassy was under attack, nobody gives a shit.

Hey. We never claimed that all Democrats were goody two shoes. We include a full complement of sinners of various types.
Suffern ACE
@Linda Featheringill: are you worried that a lack of sinners makes us boring? We might just be too conventionally sinful for our own good.
magurakurin
I beg to differ. 27% of Americans are intensely interested in the current “scandals.”

GOP POV:
But WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE give a shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why, oh why, don’t you?
Where was Obombastic, when that consulate in Benghazi was being attacked?
Where?
WHAT!
ZOMG!!!
We’ve just heard that he was in an overnight orgy with gay male aliens, recently cloned from the dead ones, at Area 51!!!
Straight gay sex isn’t good enough for Oblackie!
NO!
He has to do it with cloned gay aliens!
What do you have to say now, Librtards?
Hose him down, and IMPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!!!!!!!!!!

On the IRS looking at Tea Party applications for tax-exempt status, Jamelle Bouie summarizes reports that some of those groups actually did deserve close examination.
I’m reminded of some programs that conservatives like—stop and frisk, traffic stops to check immigration status, security profiling at airports. These all discommodate the large majority of innocent people who happen to look a particular way. Going after white conservative patriots, though, just isn’t right.

Hell is a gated community?
Who knew?

@NotMax: Satan isn’t going to let just anyone in.
Eric
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): By satan you mean dick cheney, right?
Belafon (formerly anonevent)
@Eric: Cheney’s definitely not allowed in Hell. Satan is afraid of being upstaged.

@RSA:
But in this case, as in the Shirley Sherrod case, the O Admin jumped quickly to let their people take the fall before it was known if there was any actual wrong-doing or not. It was a clear mistake on the Sherrod instance and is looking to be one here, as well.
Why not, “we will look into it and if anything was wrong, it will be dealt with” rather than, “OMG fire them before it sullies us!”?
Ruckus
@Svensker:
Fire first, ask questions later.
Commenting at Balloon Juice since 1937
The real crime is the cover up. Apparently there is some type of murder investigation going on now that the owner of the video has disappeared and Ford claimed publicly ‘there’s no video and there never was’.
Chris
@RSA:
No matter how well I know it, it’s still truly amazing the extent to which “I should have rights and entitlements that other people should not because I’m one of the in-group and they’re outside the tribe” is the essence of conservative ideology.

@Shakezula: I just wonder. I suppose it’s obvious that ‘Kenyan Muslim Soshalist’ is, somehow, synonymous with ‘crack-smoking librul’.

I don’t understand this post nor the comments. Why should the doings of some Canadian mayor matter to american press people? On a slow news week they might cover it or might not but the Canadian parties aren’t exactly the equivalent of our American parties and I don’t see how this relates to coverage of the American president.
Are other people getting different links?
canuckistani
@gvg:
It’s a culture war thing. As was pointed out in a previous thread, Ford was elected by suburban hippie-punchers with a mandate to punch hippies. He’s the closest thing we have to the anger of the Tea Party.
Bitter and Deluded Lurker
@canuckistani: Ford’s supporters are also apparently Canada’s 27%. His current poll numbers are little higher, but I suspect they’re going to bottom out around the magic number.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
Being Rob Ford’s new press flak could be entertaining. What’ve you got to lose at this point, really? May as well have some fun with the moment

There are very few circumstances under which someone says this and truly doesn’t know what the police are investigating.
Comrade Dread
If we’re going to emulate foreign governments, then I wish our Congress were a lot more like those ones where legislators beat the **** out of each other and get into bench clearing brawls.

@Comrade Dread: If Charles Sumner were still with us, I’m sure he would disagree.

@NotMax: They remind me more of 13 and 14-year-olds than toddlers. Just substitute government for parents. They hate hate hate the government. They want the government to get off their backs and stay away from their stuff. But of course they’re going to live in the house they grew up and, and expect to be driven everywhere still, and deserve a cell phone and allowance.
