Let’s talk about how much I have let you down this week.
Comments are closed.
Yutsano
The week has just started. But no Tunch pics means you are already letting me down. Not to mention wifey.
Redshirt
Can we conduct an internal BJ investigation as to why no one can directly reply to Yutsano? It’s weird. The comment just disappears. It’s happening to multiple people.
TruthOfAngels
WHERE ARE KITTEH PICS YOU ARE WORSE THAN HITLER COLE
Also puppeh pics pls kthxbai

I second the lack of Tunch sightings.
Yutsano
@Redshirt: @Crusty Dem: I must have been like semi-banned or something. It’s a very bizarre and specific hang-up. FYWP. No really.
Brother Machine Gun of Desirable Mindfulness (fka AWS)
THIS NEW VERSION OF THE SITE SUCKS!
ETA: Why do you hate @yutsano? you’re worse than bush! you sold us out!
Redshirt
So from the other thread, does anyone else fast regularly? I’d be interested in your experiences.
It kills me – the headaches. I wonder if this is particular to me or fairly common?
The prophet Nostradumbass
The Sharks just went up 3 games to none on the Canucks, in decisive fashion.

@Redshirt:
Someone added Yutsano replies to the spam filter. I think.
YellowJournalism
@Redshirt: Lindsey Graham, John McCain, and some random Republican are calling for a massive internal investigation.
Redshirt
@Crusty Dem: It doesn’t behave like the spam filter. If I say “Ca$ino Peni$” my comment will post but it will be in moderation. Whereas a simple reply to Yutsano just disappears. Woosh! The comment is nowhere.
Crusty Dem
@Onastuy:
Can I say the name backwards or will that destroy the universe.

Re-posting this from the previous thread because I thought the article was so interesting:
Interesting article on Obama’s environmental record. I wasn’t aware that the Obama admin and others had been this successful on reducing carbon emissions:
smintheus
@The prophet Nostradumbass: I hope you didn’t miss the epic smackdown Ottawa laid on Montreal. The Habs truly disgraced themselves with their repulsive antics in the 3rd period with the game out of reach.

@YellowJournalism: Ayotte is the third. Pronounced “Ayuh”.
By the by, I almost never ever watch TV, but caught a bit of the Bruins game last night, and there was an attack ad against Ayotte about her gun background check vote.
A bit early, yes?

@Redshirt:
I can link to the comment w/o the name. I can say the name. The name in the comment = death.
When I tried to add it in an edit, it warned me it was spam…
Redshirt
@askew: My first take at this: Could the reductions be because of the weakened economy?
superluminar
you never really told us how you felt about Burnsy?
Violet
@Redshirt: Yep. Replies to Yutsano just vanish. Its very weird.
As for fasting, if you have headaches it is possibly a sign of blood sugar issues. Do you usualy eat a carb heavy diet?
askew
And of course I notice the link isn’t there right after the edit time ends. Here’s the link to the article I mentioned.
I’m blaming this one on the demon sinus infection/flu I’ve got.
Redshirt
@Violet: I guess I do, as a vegetarian. You don’t get headaches? How long do you fast for? I’m usually A-OK for 16-18 hours, but then it comes and it is crushing. I can barely move sometimes, and get nauseous too, which is not a very pleasant feeling with the headaches and the empty stomach.
For the record, I consume nothing but water for 24 hours.
Yutsano
@Violet: They don’t vanish for everyone though. That’s the really bizarre part. It seems to have no rhyme nor reason to it.
Mark S.
Iron Man 3 kind of let me down, but I guess I can’t blame Cole for that.
Mike E
You let me down not at all, since I visited my sis and her hubby at the OBX this weekend–it was a doggy good time since they brought their Josie and I had my daughter’s dog, though Miss E was down the coast attending a JROTC field trip, so that was really almost not a consolation prize, sort of. I kid, it was a lot of fun watching the pooches frolicking in the surf, but the clock is about to run out on us getting in these vacations now that my girl is getting closer to college life, so yeah, to make me feel better about this, I just might blame you, after all. Bastard! :/
The prophet Nostradumbass
@smintheus: I didn’t see it live, but have seen video f it.

I’ve been thinking of starting my own blog and writing a program so that people can only reply to yutsano. I’m assuming tgat the majority of comments will be @yutsano “testing”, but it will serve as a counterweight for wp injustice.
Dead Ernest
@Redshirt: First thought on why you might have HA’s with fasting; do you consume caffeine daily but not while fasting? If so, the HA may be due to caffeine withdrawal.
Second thought, any chance you might be glucose intolerant? Glucose intolerance can occur and remain as only that, or foretell developing diabetes, even diabetes that won’t become frank for years to come.
Hope you’re able to figure it out as the fasting should end up being quiye good for your health. Cheers, D.E.
YellowJournalism
@Yutsano: If this goes through, I am one of the Chosen.

I really am getting sick of Tywin Lannister’s constant gay-bashing of Loras Tyrell. Like, WTF??!!
Violet
@Redshirt: I generally don’t go over 18 hours although longer won’t make me feel ill. I need to eat lower carb to feel well and if I’m doing that then fasting won’t bother me. Feeling ill is a sign it is hard for your body. That’s not really good for you. Maybe try fasting to work with your circadian rhythm so you break your fast around lunchtime. Easier on your body than breaking it late at night.
RobertDSC-PowerMac G5 Dual
Not enough Tunch, Lily, and Rosie. We hear about them, but rarely see them anymore.
hamletta
Aw, you’ve never let me down.
And can I take a moment to brag about how I added a new feature to my parish’s ratty old Drupal6 site?
Pastor doesn’t understand that Thursday is Printing Day, not Revise-the-Entire-Back-Section-of the Bulletin Day.
So he throws in this thing where people should download the bulletin if they can’t get to the church, which is a simple enough concept.
But I had a wedding and rehearsal to do sound for, and one of our multi-generational parishioners died, so I’m working with the family on the memorial service on Tuesday.
But on Thursday, I mapped out the fields and views I’d need, and I did it all on Saturday night after the wedding, but in time for Sunday morning.
Redshirt
@Dead Ernest: I drink a lot of coffee, and don’t while fasting. I’ve thought about caffeine withdrawal as the source of my pain, but then, there are occasional normal days I skip all caffeine and I don’t get headaches like when fasting.
How would one know if they were glucose intolerant? I have no other diet or health issues at any other time, and only experience these issues when fasting for 24 hours.
Redshirt
@Violet: Interesting. I hadn’t thought of doing that – I’ve been doing midnight to midnight forever.
Its weird in that I am perfectly fine until about hour 18 or so, they I get steadily worse. The last 3 hours are torture.
But self chosen torture! I could of course stop this at any time – the headache goes away approximately 10 minutes after eating, and is gone, and I’m back to normal. Like right now – totally normal.
askew
@Redshirt:
The article says that is part of the reason and if that is the case, we should see the #s creep back ups. But, Obama’s had some regulatory success with increasing the MPG, etc. as well. Basically, the article talks about how environmentalists and the liberal media are judging Obama’s environmental record strictly on not passing the cap and trade bill and excluding all of the other regulations he’s put in place + all of the money he’s directed towards clean energy technology.
Violet
@Redshirt: That sounds like blood sugar to me. Also some psychosomatic issues maybe. You think or fear getting the headache at hour 18 so you sort of expect it and then it shows up. Try switching your 24 hr period so you break your fast earlier. Maybe if you break your fast at breakfast then the last hours will be while you are asleep so you won’t notice the headache.
smintheus
@Suffern ACE: Isn’t Yutsano a troll? Why do so many commenters at BJ feed the trolls?

You let me down by not reminding me to rewatch Boundin’. Fortunately, I did it on my own, and I am much happier now.

@askew: Obama not getting credit for awesome stuff he’s accomplished?! I’m shocked! SHOCKED!
It’s news stories like yours that give me a good deal of hope that despite the Republican crazy, we’re still making good solid progress in a number of areas. If we can get Hillary as President for 8 years giving us 16 straight years of Dem leadership, we just might be able to burn out the insane wingnuts from our midst.

@Redshirt: The easiest thing to do would be, next time you get a HA while fasting , get a small amount of caffiene into you. The elimination of the caffeine WD HA will happen quite quickly (maybe 30 min) and you’ve got your answer. No further investigation necessary.
Testing for glucose intolerance is quite straighforward but a little bit demanding. I think the last time I ordered it was during Internship days so I don’t recall the specific details. In brief; a certain amount of glucose is consumed, a certain number of minutes pass, and blood glucose is tested. Then a larger amount of glucose is consumed, number of minutes, blood tested, rinse, repeat.
So you can see, get the headache, have a cuppa coffee, wait 30 min and see if the HA is gone is better first test.

An Irishman walks out of a bar. Hey, it could happen.

@NotMax: It’s a bit worrisome, but I’ll take my chances with the sure thing (she’s a sure thing) and roll the dice at the end of her second term, rather than run some typically lame Democrat to go against Rand Paul and lose, thus ushering in the END OF TIMES.
Redshirt
@Dead Ernest: I don’t get your abbreviations (HA? WD?) but I get the gist and it’s a great recommendation as it will quickly rule some things in or out and is easy to do. Next time I fast (11/11) I’ll try it. Thanks.
Yutsano

I want Cole to go off on someone again. That was really fun.

@Redshirt: I’m wondering if there isn’t a lot of personal variation in physical response to fasting. My aunt (and a friend) get headaches if individual meals are late — aunt seems to be especially (lack of) protein sensitive. We just have to drop everything and get food into them immediately. I can forget to eat for a day or more without issues (tend never to forget my coffee but food just disappears off the radar). Just wondering aloud.
PeakVT
@patroclus: Was GoT on tonight? If it was, Cole let us down by not having a thread.
I just re-read the first 4 books, and I must say I could really live without the whole Ironborn sub-plot. I suppose GRRM won’t kill them off now, but I wish he would find a way.
Suzanne
@Yutsano: Oh, yes. I’m sure that that will certainly get him to go off on someone.
So I am trying out that Jergens Natural Glow self-tanner, as I am of the FUCK YOU, SUN, YOU CANCER-CAUSING DEMON OF DEATH persuasion. I am worried about it staining my sheets. Anyone have any experience with it?
mai naem
@Redshirt: HA = headache, WD = withdrawal. I’ve done no food fasts which are hard. What I do now which I find easier is a no grain fast which isn’t bad but I’m a veg so its harder on me. No grain means I can have fruits and dairy which doesn’t sound hard but you always want what you can’t have. Also, I agree with the changing of the times. For me doing a no food one is easier if I do it from early AM to early AM because I’m asleep for the last hard hours. Anyhow, instead of an absolute no food, I would allow either one small meal or allow yourself one or two food items.
Redshirt
@Dead Ernest: No worries! I figured it was something like that.
For the record, I fast only to suffer, under a theory I have which I call “forced sickness”. That is, the ritual of intentionally depriving yourself of something (in this case food, and then health) makes you appreciate these things far more than normal.
This is not a groundbreaking insight, I realize, as this forms the basis of many religious rituals. But in our day and age of plenty, I think it’s good to remind one’s self, forcefully, of the blessings of food. We’re all lucky to be living in these modern times, in wealth.
Suzanne
@Redshirt: Are you hypoglycemic?
NotMax
@Yutsano (#51)
Made me recall a site with some arresting and evocative photos of a building abandoned in the 70s and practically unvisited (save for a lone squatter who has been there for a long time), on the grounds of what was once the sprawling Creedmoor Pscyhiatric Hospital on the very outskirts of NYC.
Interesting site to poke around and gawk.
Suzanne
@Redshirt: I get it. That logic is why I always “celebrate” Lent, even though my Christianity is, well, “unconventional”. I find that the discipline of not always getting what you want is important for personal growth.
Redshirt
@scav: I’ve known some folks like that, and I assumed they were hypoglycemic, which is a real and potentially serious condition. I only get these symptoms after 18 hours of fasting, which seems markedly different than hypoglycemic, though I suppose they could be related.
It might just be the lack of caffeine.
ulee
@Dead Ernest< Jim Beam all around, and keep em coming.
Redshirt
@Suzanne: I don’t think so, but maybe I am. It’s only a problem two days of the year, so I say, meh, for the most part.
Redshirt
@mai naem: I might try that next time. Say 8AM to 8AM.
Has anyone ever fasted for more than 24 hours? Does anyone here fast regularly? I’ve read about some diets where people fast every other week. I don’t think I could do that.
ulee
John Cole walks into a bar. Give me a pedicure. I’ll be back.
scav
@Redshirt: If you’re thinking along those lines, you might enjoy The Supper of the Lamb which is a little bit cookbook, a lot more about cooking and a lot of thinking about eating thoughtfully and both festal and ferial ( non feast-day) eating — bouncing between the two, the necessity of both. I forget if he explicitly discusses fasting but he is a priest so It would likely arise. I was following along for the amazing way he works to get everything out of foodstuffs, especially bones.
Suzanne
@Redshirt: If I go without food for over about eight hours, I get dizzy and faint and spacey and apparently look very ashy. It is Teh Suck. I do not fast for that reason.
NotMax
@Redshirt
Went 5 days once, for no reason. Just to see if I could do it. First thing I ate after that was a single fresh, ripe strawberry. Luscious.
Also been eating only one meal per day (if I remember to) since 1964.
Redshirt
@NotMax: Impressive. I assume you suffer no serious issues while fasting?
The funny thing is actual hunger is never an issue after like hour 6 or 7 for me. I’m not hungry at all. It’s just the headaches which suck.
Redshirt
@Suzanne:
Exactly. I appreciate religious festivals for this reason. Islam and Judaism have some great fasting traditions too which I think are great for both personal reasons and social interaction – if everyone is fasting during the day, then night time must be a blast all around town and home.
NotMax
@Redshirt
Everything copacetic so long as I get my steady stream of black coffee (no sugar).
Not necessarily because it has anything to do with eating or not eating, rather because I’m a hellion without coffee. Even I don’t want to be around myself sans coffee.

I am dreading the Trayvon Martin trial. It’s been truly rage inducing to me to hear all the justifications of Zimmerman’s actions and how gosh, we really don’t know what that little hoodlum was really up to. I’m expecting ace reporting from Fox news though, so at there’s that to look forward to.

John, I am profoundly disappointed.
I woke this morning find that the world is still filled with war, disease, corporate exploitation and corruption, and now they are telling me we have crossed the 400 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere. Last year was another record warm year despite what should have been cooling from a La Nina event.
We are genuinely toast.
And here I thought you were fixing everything.

The Syrian REBELS might be using nerve gas…
How will this play in the noose – or will it be buried because it doesn’t fit the narrative of Good v. Evil and “Obama’s not acting decisively to arm (_________) and bomb (________) like Manly Men John and Lindsey tell David Gregory they would be doing as President and Secretary of State if the electorate hadn’t failed America.”
Bruce S
@askew:
Personally, I want the environmental movement to judge the overall record as a carbon-based fuel dependent society in dealing effectively with rapidly worsening climate change, not Obama’s record in taking what steps he can under current constraints. That’s really not the point at all if our goal is to save the planet for our kids and grandkids – environmentalists need to flag the big picture which is still a massive problem, not declare “incremental victories for the Obama administration.” A lot of would-be liberals whose first instinct is always to circle the wagons around Obama don’t have a clue about the dynamics of social change in the real world, although they’ll claim they do because they are almost as obsessively focused solely on what can/does happen inside the Beltway as Cokie Roberts and David Gregory, albeit from a less idiotic and perpetually biased perspective.
p.a.
@askew: economic depression will do that. Factories close, people drive less, abandoned houses don’t produce as much carbon when owners move in with parents. I’m sure there has been some progress especially as energy costs increase, but there are other things at work.

I have to eat something semi regular or I get massive headaches. I have tried changing my diet from high protein to high carbs and the headaches don’t go away. High or low activity doesn’t change the headaches, as long as my overall caloric intake is adequate for the amount of activity. Just very sensitive to the timing of intake. And I am not diabetic.

Same here — if I wait too long between meals, it can be an actual migraine trigger. Most doctors strongly recommend that you NOT do any kind of fasting or “cleanse” if you’re hyperglycemic or pre-diabetic because it can cause all kinds of problems.
