    Truly we must cut benefits for the poor to ensure that we aren’t financing terror and because… fuck the poor, that’s why.

    Unhinged facebookery:

    The Welfare terrorist: Nothing shocking here, but it was discovered that the Boston two were both on public assistance, (welfare) since they arrived seeking assylum with their family (all on the tax payers big fat titty) Yesterday I saw a truck serving as a temporary home to guy and his dog. It had an ass load of tools in the back and a bumper sticker that read: Obummer. Until we all vote for change, change back to the way things were, your work will continue paying for more well educated, well off foreign terrorists trying to killing us at every public event as you see more hard working Americans living out of their cars at Walmart, working any way possible to keep a small piece of what the socialists will let them keep. The rest goes to Khalid Sheik Mohahhmed to spend in a strip club before religious Jhihad on you and your family.

    I told him Assylum is a fantastic pr0n name.

    OMFG. Now we’re in for a bunch of grandstanding GOP politicians demanding national security checks before releasing welfare checks.

    The number of ridiculous hoops that Americans must jump through to get insufficient public assistance benefits are always increasing, and almost always for the benefit of some a$$hole politician wanting to prove toughness by immiserating people already in a desperate struggle for survival. Well, except for the young bucks on food stamps and the cadillac queens, of course.

    I say we round up all the folks and their progeny who came here by claiming they wanted to flee oppression in their native lands. All they really wanted was our big fat welfare checks. If that means sending the Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz clans back to Fidelphia or Castroville, so be it.

    Of course we should give them a chance to self deport before the round up. Any second amendment appurtenances they might have acquired while enjoying our freedoms can be donated to the Boy Scouts for youth educational programs or simply sold over the internet to offset the cost of the deportation and any past welfare expense.

    It’s remarkable how much Facebook has lowered my opinion of my conservative acquaintances.

    I imagine that if I’d been living in the old, pre-social media days, I might’ve found ways to ignore it (especially with those I don’t interact with regularly in real life) – even those that I knew were Republican, you know, you can give them a “well maybe they just don’t know shit about politics and are just voting the way Mommy and Daddy always did” – or, y’know, something.

    When every few days you’re exposed to an elaborate rant lifted straight from the pages of all the crazy fascists out there, though, it’s hard not to face the fact that yep, these people really are that fucking stupid and that fucking hateful.

    The number of ridiculous hoops that Americans must jump through to get insufficient public assistance

    I have no firsthand experience with welfare (so far – I suspect at some point that may change) but the other year I met up with a friend from college and the subject of food stamps came up, she’d had to go on them for a little while while unemployed. Apparently, what she got was thirty dollars a month.

    I remember trying to wrap my head around that and thinking to myself “holy shit, so… if I bought literally NOTHING BUT the cheapest pasta, with thirty dollars a month I’d have enough money to buy myself… one meal a day? Is that right?” And this was DC; I don’t like to imagine how much less she’d have been getting in Alabama.

    I’ve had a violent urge to beat people to death ever since when they whine about how “good” people on welfare have it.

    @Chris:It can be shocking the nuttiness that can lie beneath the surface of folks that otherwise seem normal. I remember a coworker, whom I’d worked with for several years and seemed pretty normal, finally revealed his true interest at a work party: The Lost Gold of the Incas. Seems he paid some grifter 10k to look for it and was still holding out hope for a discovery. I think a lot of folks are just predisposed to paranoia and magical thinking. The internet may be making it worse, as it provides a steady supply of fantasy. If you’ve got the stomach for it, get out of the boat and follow the links in that memeorandum entry, you’ll see some striking examples.

    @Frankensteinbeck:

    They also enjoy hurting poor people (among others), and this makes them feel justified.

    Yep. Yep, yep, yep.

    There’s a really sadistic streak that runs through conservatives when it comes to hurting people, and they take it out on the weakest in society because that’s where they can rationalize it as something other than pure cruelty. They understand you can’t just go around hurting ANYONE, but if you’re doing it to someone on welfare, it becomes “tough love,” “character building,” “giving them an incentive to get off welfare,” etc. If you’re doing it to people in prison, you’re helping them pay for their sins and also deterring others from committing crimes. If you’re doing it to suspected terrorists, of course, it’s all for God and Country and ticking time bomb scenarios… the list goes on.

    I don’t know who coined the term “you can tell a lot about someone by the way they treat people they don’t have to treat well,” but he or she was dead on. And what it tells about the average conservative isn’t pretty.

    @jl:

    Hey, an out of context quote or a complete fabrication is enough to get the outrage machine into high gear. The whole point of the outrage machine is that it can be activated by whatever the noise merchants want.

    Don’t forget that a non-insignificant chunk of that change was used to try to bribe the various factions into supporting (or at least not attacking us). And there’s that TWELVE FUCKING BILLION DOLLARS in hard US dollars that was loaded onto planes, flown to Iraq, and then made to disappear.

    So it’s entirely reasonable to say that the money spent on the Iraq war funds terrorism as well. And I’d love to hear your conservative friends explain how Obummer went back in time to make THAT happen, too.

    All excellent points. All extraordinary waste in a war that absolutely should not have happened.

    Yet, not a word from the hypocritical deficit hawks.

    And yes, this is definitely Obama’s fault (I’m kidding, of course). Bush funded his war via supplementals so it didn’t even hit the deficit. Obama, to his credit, changed that. But that also meant that the budget deficit, due to that accounting change, went up during Obama. And facts be damned, that’s all the deficit phonies on the right need.

    In general, blue states have higher cash payments and lower food stamps payments, while the red states have virtually non-existent cash payments and relatively high food stamps payments. Why? Because the states share a portion of the cash welfare payments while food stamps (now called SNAP, oficially) are just about 100% federal money. So your Alabamian probably gets plenty of food stamps but can’t afford anything more than a shack to live in.

    Do not forget that some of that money was supposed to go to US POW’s who had been tortured by Saddam’s people back in the first Gulf War and sued under US law to get compensation from frozen Iraqi accounts.

    Bush emptied the accounts out and the POW’s got nothing...all at the same time we were dishonoring what happened to them by torturing Iraqis ourselves.

    PurpleGirl says:

    From what I know of cash assistance in NYS, it’s probable that Ms. Russell got benefits in her name because she is still using her maiden name and got them because she had the child. Tamerlan Tsarneav probably got benefits in his name because he was married and had a child. In most cases, single adults do not get “welfare” (aid to families, whatever it’s called now). Single adults may get cash assistance in NYS but it isn’t very much. And separate rent aid is something like $284 a month, and you need to have someone co-sign that they will help you pay the rest of whatever the rent costs are.

    Xenos says:

    Note the very general terms used: ‘welfare benefits’. Does not say cash benefits, AFDC, or TANF benefits. Qnd you can be sure that if that family got cash, the Herald would have used the word. So maybe maybe medicaid, or food stamps, or housing support. And not receiving these minimal benefits would helped, how?

    Also, to: Tamerlan (who was named after a mass-murderer of Iranian Shiites, btw, fwtw) managed to get off public support a couple years ago. So did the system work?

    Have standards of wingnut discourse gotten so low that no detail or explanation of cause is necessary, so that all you need to say is ‘WELFARE! Suck it, libtards!’? Because it makes for a pretty boring discourse.
