A splinter group of ne’er do wells seems to be a better descriptor than riot.

In criminal law, a riot really just tends to be disorderly conduct committed by a group of people. Not necessarily a big deal.
Lol
White people “protest”; black people “riot”.

I followed some of your reports last night on Twitter. Thanks for doing that.
Alison
@Lol: THIS. See also: “Occupy”.
To me, the term riot implies lawlessness, yet in this case, as in many others, it’s not the protesting citizens who are behaving as such…

Can a summary be posted for the media-challenged?

Seems like the term of art may be “Rampage”. As in Videos Show Store Rampage by Protesters From Vigil
As in not a cool way to honor one taken by a violent act.

@Keith G:
I think you’re not understanding–this isn’t about honoring someone when this type of event occurs. This is about a group of people basically living under a kind of occupation and frustration about lives lost by those who are supposed to protect them. No one will claim that the things that occurred are okay but at the same time we have to acknowledge what leads to the situation.
Keith G
I wasn’t there, so I cannot connect to the thought process that led to those folks trying to steal a cash register and then hitting a bystander in the head with a bottle.
Was it frustration? Was it something more base? If indeed that specific group of young people acted out due to feeling occupied by oppressive forces, we need to get to them and help them see how counterproductive that behavior is. I am sure it is a struggle, and it is a struggle they need to come to grips with and find their way through.

@Lol:
White people “experiment” with drugs.

@Keith G: You do know that there are opportunists everywhere, right?

Heck yeah there was a riot.
The NYPD rioted.
Keith G
@Omnes Omnibus: Doesn’t everyone know that? I assume so.

1. Property damage means either there was a riot or there was an agent provocateur. In this case, it sounds like a small riot.
2. White people definitely riot, and sometimes for really idiotic reasons, such as JoePa getting fired. (All stories agreed on this.)
3. TWiB is not very accessible to casual followers. I’d watch many more of these episodes if they only ran a couple minutes per news item, and if the by-play were edited out.

@Pete Mack: Add to that Vancouver, Northeastern University (where a girl who was not involved got killed by a cop’s rubber bullet, and where a guy who’s car was being tipped struck and killed one of the rioters), and of course UMass Amherst. All of them vaguely related to sports … the Sox … the Bruins …
Vancouver had frank looting going on, as well. Middle class white Canadian college kids.
UMass set dorm furniture on fire. The rent-a-cops successfully arrested
the arsonistshalf the special needs kids on campus.Another Halocene Human
You know, there is a way to kill-file Keith G. I have done so and my blood pressure has been much better for it.
Keith G
@Another Halocene Human: Good for you. I hear high blood pressure is a silent killer. Get some exercise and go easy on the salt, too.
That does raise a question of just what I have typed that has had given such impact?

This Week in Baseball has its own radio station? And they’re covering riots in Brooklyn?
The Ancient Randonneur
If only they had read Katie Kieffer’s column at Townhall Dot Com none of this would have happened.
I think the interview you did with the local Assemblyman was very enlightening. But isn’t it almost always the case that if local officials would take the time to listen to the concerns of any given set of people these sorts of incidence can be avoided? I guess Mayor Bloomberg is too busy making sure 7-11 doesn’t serve Big Gulps to come down and talk to those folks.
