TBogg was all set to deprive us of his wit and bassets, but Ms. Hamsher talked him out of it. As far as I’m concerned, that makes up for the unfortunate Grover Norquist thing. Well done, Ms. Hamsher.

It’s a bit different than TBogg (none have bassetts), but I was thinking the other day what the liberal blogisphere would be like if Mollys Ivins and Steve Gilliard were still around. And would it would be like without Krugman.
And Billmon.

Ok Jane, I just forgave you, and absolve you of your sins.
All you need to do is say 10 “Hail – Obama’s Not Worse Than George W. Bush’s,” and count the lubed pearls 13 times on Senator Limpseed Cornpone Grahamcracker’s (R – Closet) favorite “pearl-necklace” string.
What would we do without TBogg?

It’s good that she talked TBogg out of retiring. I’m sure she’d lose a whole segment of her traffic that goes nowhere near the rest of that joint other than TBogg’s place. I can’t be the only one.

I’m not going to forgive Hamsher anytime soon. The term “firebagger” was coined for a reason, and it wasn’t just some happy-talk about finding common ground with Norquist. But she did a solid here.
Ash Can
I could get all cynical up in here and accuse Hamsher of begging TBogg to stay because without him, her site would plummet to a dozen hits per week and she knows it, but that would needlessly harsh on the warm, fuzzy buzz of this thread.
And yeah, this makes up for Norquist the same way W’s ability to keep his mouth shut after leaving office makes up for destroying Iraq and crashing the economy.
burnspbesq
@Betty Cracker:
Details have faded somewhat with the passage of time, but in essence she ran him off for the mortal sin of disagreement on a policy issue (the trumped-up charge had something to do with language). Some things that were done and said in connection with the 2006 Connecticut Senate race may also have been part of the problem.
A pretty substantial number of folks who are now BJ regulars bailed from FDL and followed David to his own place, and found their way here by a variety of routes when David folded his tent.
The only reason I still have a Facebook account is to keep up with David.

One of the reasons I left Daily Kos was the infighting over Hamsher. I commented that while I was upset with the Norquist thing, I wasn’t going to do the “she’s dead to me” routine.
I said that I had found myself with common cause in the past, and I expected to have common cause in the future and that I would be there to stand with her when I did.
I don’t think anyone responded to that comment.

I personally loved FDL when they were covering the Libby trial. And stuff leading up to it. I loved what all of them were putting out in terms of discussion and background – deep background in EmptyWheel’s case – on things beltway press just let slide.
I think it’s ok to get into fierce arguments with people of like minds. It’s all we’ve got sometimes. Jane Hamsher is not going away until she does. I don’t know if most wars solve anything really. But wrangling, battling, is something else.
A propos of nothing here’s a link showing a recent wrangling between Noam Chomsky and Rick Perlstein.

I am mildly amused by how quickly Hamsher (and, a few months back, Greenwald) are willing to ditch their Unyielding Progressive Principles when faced with an “Obot” who has a popular following of his own.

I don’t know why, but this post made me nostalgic for Table Talk. The class of 2000 that was broken apart by Nader, 9/11 and the Salon subscription fee. Ferguson Foont, Tbogg, Atrios, Stirling Newberry, MECowan, Ox, Machina, lukusiak… A great class of writers of whom those names are just the ones my morning-clouded mind can remember.
I am glad TBogg is sticking around. Jane had a sweet gig going until she tried to cross the streams with Paultards to create TeaFireTron. He’s now the singular reason for my page cllcks.

You know, in the early days, Billmon had a big role in crafting part of the voice of the internets.
I mean that seriously–there’s a kind of snarky, meta, irony-drenched tone, heavy with obscenity and lightened with improvisational word-coinage, that characterizes quite a lot of blog writing. And I think of him as one of its early masters.
He distilled it from bits of Hunter S. Thompson, bits of Chandler and Hammett, other sources. He passed it along to people like Andrew (i.e. The Editors).
Molly Ivins voice? Very different. Fafblog? Pretty different–more admixture of pure fantasy and (at least in the old days) sheer silly fun.
Or maybe I’m just describing my own sequence of exposure, i.e. that I read Billmon doing it first, even if he was not the first to do it.

Just the one internet?

@The Red Pen: I don’t dislike her as much as others, but the shameless self promotion really turned me off. I don’t think it’s right to sell yourself as the “voice of the left” when you really don’t represent more than a small minority. I get; everyone needs to make a living, but I still don’t think it’s right. I also think her involvement in PFC Manning’s case did more harm than good, IMO. I think that there was a bit of spotlighting involved, but, unfortunately, the spotlight was on her. And behind the closed doors of the confinement, I’m positive she didn’t do him any good.
As for FDL? I get enough of the purity lefty shit from our resident knuckleheads. I don’t need a blog devoted to it.

TBogg is the only FDLer I bother with anymore, though. Jane can be a little shrill, but given her personal history I figure she’s probably alive because she’s got some fight I might not always agree with. Who am I to judge? She’s done more good than I have.
Ah, Billmon. I remember a series of posts he did during the Israeli-Lebanon conflict du jour of whenever, at the height of his blogging, and it was downright creepy how prescient he was about what was going on even with the benefit of hindsight. He was more or less 3-4 days ahead of the news during his streak. I became convinced he was a high-ranking government insider for a while.
I await Dr. Black’s departure from the scene before too long. He’s been showing signs for some time now of burnout and boredom.

Assuming this is a somewhat open thread, I read today that Mississippi finally ratified the 13th Amendment, apparently after someone saw Lincoln or something. It reminded me that Michael Moore used to have a show called TV Nation — I enjoyed most of that more than his movies because it was a little less heavy-handed, which I guess is just to say it was merely heavy-handed — and he had an episode with Rusty Cundieff (from Fear of a Black Hat, a very underrated movie) going around with a white slave in Mississippi for the same reason. I believe they went line dancing together in a country bar shackled together. Anyway, good times.

If you wake up and someone is in your bathroom with the door locked, do you
a) knock on the door and see who it is

I think the Pistorius/Steenkamp and Chris Dorner stories are a good example why gun owners should be required to go through more than just an initial background and psych test. Cassidy
@libarbarian: Yeah, the story sounds just a little overly dramatic as if it was written for that effect. Of course, waiting and seeing are prudent, but it doesn’t sound right.
@J.A.F. Rusty Shackleford: I’m not really the two are comparable. Dorner wasn’t, nor was ever, crazy or mentally unhealthy. Everything he did was of sound mind and deliberate action/ malice. You could say that he was disturbed or any number of things, but the reality is that he was a guy who was pushed too far by what he percieved as a conspiracy to ruin his life. I think most people don’t realize how far they’ll fall when everything is taken from them.

I’m facing some bogus charges myself.
The other day I heard a knock at my front door. I naturally assumed it was Leatherface trying to get in and kill my family, so I immediately unloaded my .45 at the closed door. Afterwards I opened it and, to my surprise, saw a bunch of dead girlscouts with cookies scattered about my porch. So I ate some cookies and then dialed 911. I sincerely regret the loss of life that was caused by this tragic and unavoidable mistake, but now the police are saying I did something wrong and threatening to arrest me for something called “manslaughter”. It’s ridiculous. It was a clear case of self-defense. I was not expecting anyone to come to my house at that time, so I naturally assumed the person knocking at my door was a violent predator who was trying to harm me and my family.

I was reading Tbogg a long time ago, before he migrated to FDL. I wish I’d kept a record of what I was reading back then–Media Whores Online, Rising Hegemon?, Billmon? The rise of the internet as the place where I went for information about Bush and Iraq coincided with the early toddlerhood of my children so its lost in the mists of time, for me. Googling around and looking for Trex, who I don’t remember, I found some contemporary posts about things I’ve totally forgotten like the guy who tried to suicide bomb one of Hillary Clinton’s campaign headquarters, or Karl Rove insisting that it was Congress that wanted to rush through the vote on the Iraq war not Bush.

Hey, it’s OT, but I’m gonna spam a little bit this week. This saturday, the 23rd, the first Women’s Title Fight, Main Event, and just plain UFC fight is taking place between a former Olympian (2008 Judo Bronze medalist) and the only (to my knowledge) openly gay profession fighter. She’s also a veteran (Marine). The first female, Ronda Rousey, is a media darling and current UFC Bantamweight champion. She’s got sponsors, main stream sprots media coverage, etc. The second, Liz Carmouche, lives paycheck to paycheck and works at the gym she trains at to make ends meet. She’s also the underdog, brough in to be the sacrificial lamb for Rousey’s rising star. Personally, I’m rooting for Carmouche. She seems like a cool chick.
I know most of you don’t care [or loathe]combat sports, but if you can find yourself at a sports bar this weekend showing the fight, every little bit goes a long way. Most professional fighters live below poverty and their families are part of their “sacrifice”. Even if she loses, solid viewer numbers can help one fighter start to make a living and maybe elevate a lesbian fighter to national prominence. Anyway, I’m not trying to be preachy. I like women’s sports and I love combat sports. I really want to see WMMA be as successful as the men and now that the UFC is behind it, it can happen.

He also seemed to have a much clearer, less-deluded understanding of DC power, esp. the way that the media was constantly being suckered.
He and Josh M. were some of the first people that talked about how to do DC Kremlinology. If a “source close to the Speaker’s office” said xyz, the interesting thing was probably not what the quote contained, but rather the very fact that (e.g.) Hastert was putting distance between himself and Bush on this issue: what did this say about the jockeying for power etc.
That constant attempt to see underneath the surface of the news was enlightening to me, even though I’d been reading the news forever (e.g. grew up on Jack Anderson’s unraveling of Watergate).

There is a lot that doesn’t add up in the story as presented. His affadavit said he “felt threatened at the time because he had not put on his prosthetic legs.” If so, how did he know the bathroom door was locked? Presumably he had to get to the door and try to open it to see that it was locked. If he has some other means of mobility at home, e.g., wheelchair, how did he not notice that his girlfriend wasn’t in bed as he was backing and forthing? And don’t most people, if they’re in the bathroom and someone jiggles the knob, say something like “I’ll be out in a minute, honey” rather than remain completely silent?
A skeptic would say that the story is designed to address the evidence that the bathroom door was broken open, presumably with the girlfriend inside.
