John wanted me to remind everyone that if you are seeing an old version of Balloon Juice, hit shift-reload, in other words, hold down the shift key and click the icon that’s a 3/4 circle with an arrow in the 10 o’clock position. The location of that icon is somewhere in the URL bar, depending on the browser you’re using.
I’m not in charge of the site rebuild but I’m helping out. We haven’t really started yet – the goal is to get the design done, migrate to a new, faster server, and once we’re on the new server, iron out the configuration issues.
dmsilev
Is there a fix, or a work-around, or whatever to the site not seeming to remember the name/email details on the comment fields? It’s hardly the end of the world, but it is annoying to keep getting the ‘fill in your name, you dumbass’ error page.
Clearing the B-J cookies didn’t seem to make much difference.

Of course, if people are seeing an older version of the site, they won’t see this post.
Mustang Bobby
@dmsilev: Same question here; Firefox 18.0.2 on a Windows 7.

A troll ejection button would be nice
Baud
@General Stuck:
How would you prevent the trolls from using the button?
Omnes Omnibus
@Baud: Don’t tell them about it.
Suffern ACE
@tom: I can’t remember if its tachyon fields or tetryon particles, but there has to be a way to reach those people. The word press cloaking device is not impenetrable.

Thank you (all). I hope the transition goes smoothly.
Cheers,

OT, but reading about KY-Sen, it sounds like the people who are most likely to torpedo Ashley Judd are Kentucky Democrats who are scared of being seen as too liberal or associating with a ‘carpetbagger’.
Seriously, WTF is wrong with these people? They have proven they can win state-level races, but they’ve sucked ass at the federal level for a long time. Maybe they should take a punt and be willing to stand behind a native daughter who’s done good. It honestly seems like they hate the prospect of a Judd candidacy more than the prospect of making McConnell spend millions and possibly lose. The polls have been pretty clear that no one likes Senator Turtle…and it’s not Judd’s fault that the rest of the KY-Dem establishment is pretty chickenshit when it comes to deferring on the Senate race over the governorship in 2015.
And people wonder why southern/Appalachian Democrats are eventually going to fade away – they’re more interested in protecting their shrinking fiefdoms than in expanding the playing field. Goddamn cowards.

@Baud:
I wouldn’t mind getting ejected from this asylum by trolls using the button. same difference.

@General Stuck:
LOL. You can leave, you know. But we’d miss you.

@PsiFighter37:
Though always conservative socially, Kentucky used to be a working class labor dem state to a significant degree, but has gone to the dark side in recent decades. Too much religion and southern butthurt, are likely to blame. Along with the cheap thrill from waking dreams of being hounded by government agents morning noon and night.

@dmsilev: WordPress is supposed to set a cookie once you’ve commented and remember it. I don’t know why it isn’t.
To be honest, the current configuration is a bit of a mess and I don’t want to spend time fixing it when we’re migrating in a couple of weeks. But if the new config continues to cause this issue, I will get to the bottom of it. It makes more work for front pagers, too, because every “new” comment has to be moderated once so WordPress accepts it the next time.
Ultraviolet Thunder
I did the shift/reload deal and it looks the same as it always has. Except for the last few days my username/email does not persist in the Reply area (as mentioned above).
What ARE the changes in the new site? Maybe I’m expecting it to be more different.
MikeJ
BTW, the updated reply with quote code I sent does have one minor issue. I tried it with a few different themes. Some it worked just fine out of the box, some the reply button came up in a weird place, some it didn’t show up at all. If any of those happen, find
.yarr a { cursor:pointer; float:right;}
.yarr img { vertical-align:-2px }
in the plugin and add your own styling rules.

@mistermix:
This is going to cause major, long term whining. I love it.
I just want the old template back.

More lipstick on the BJ pig. Change the layout a bit. Change some colors, maybe a different logo. Same WordPress that Cole still can’t figure out.

Thread needz moar content.
cleek
Pie Filter has been updated.
MikeJ
@cleek: I didn’t know it was b0rked. Working fine for me.
FlipYrWhig
What’s supposed to be different? Everything looks the same as it ever was to me.
c u n d gulag
@Ultraviolet Thunder:
Same here.
What’s different, other than having to put by moniker in every time?
MikeJ
@FlipYrWhig:
I believe he said that they haven’t even started yet.
FlipYrWhig
@MikeJ: so the tip at the beginning is for people who will look at a new version later?

@FlipYrWhig: The tip at the beginning is for people who are getting old posts. Although they won’t see it until later if they are.

@cleek: Does this work for android? And can it adjudicate while using Justice Bork’s hammer?

Can someone tell me why the fields under “Leave a Reply” won’t repopulate anymore as of a week or so ago?
My name and email address used to stay there but now I have to retype them (actually my browser puts them in once I type the first letter) and it’s annoying if you want to send more than a few replies.
What can I do?
dance around in your bones
@BGinCHI:
This is happening for practically everybody and apparently there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.
I have tried clearing cache, cookies, temp files and sometimes my nym/email will show up for a bit but then it disappears again into the Twilight Zone.
Hopefully the site rebuild will fix it but…..we all know how that goes. Let’s all get ready to bitch and moan!
Mark S.
@FlipYrWhig:
Ah, but now the site has a demon.
Mark S.
This doesn’t have anything to do with the site, but my new laptop sometimes loses wireless like every 5 or 10 minutes. Is it possible it’s on some stupid setting or something? It’s Windows 8, and I’m not used to playing around with it yet.
dance around in your bones
@Mark S.: That was hysterical.
Now I want a demon.
BGinCHI
@dance around in your bones: OK, thanks.
I’m glad to know it’s not just me.
The Other Chuck
So will the rebuild finally include a duplicate post detector that actually works?
MikeJ
@Mike E: Greasemonkey doesn’t work on firefox mobile. I haven’t tried tampermonkey on chrome mobile.
There is a chrome native version that doesn’t require tampermonkey, but I haven’t updated it since cleek started supporting tampermonkey (and because my main reason for making it was to add a ui for adding names and cleek did that better than mine did). No idea if it will work on mobile chrome, but I may try it later today.
Hypatia's Momma
Not in any browser I’ve used. They all have the arrow starting at ~4:00 and terminating at ~2:00.
wasabi gasp
Throwing out there that, for whatever reason, I have not experienced any of the site weirdness (including the username problem) that seems to be plaguing folks.
Maude
@Mark S.:
Go into Win 8 help. See if you can find out why. If not, Google Win 8 wireless problems. You’ll be able to fix it.
It is known that wireless can be a pain.
I bet it’s minor.

@General Stuck:
Yes it would, but then you’d be gone.

@BGinCHI: My name and email has been fine until two days ago and I now need to type it in.
I have been using a bookmark link and chrome.

@MikeJ:
My troll filter also works with tampermonkey. I’d really love it if you tried it out with tampermonkey mobile and let me know if it works.
