My husband and I, and our pets, have a wonderful little stray dog staying with us, and we’re looking for a good home for her. She’s going to require some medical care (more on that below), but she’s very loving and smart and well-behaved, and is sure to be a rewarding pet to whomever adopts her.
The dog is a young adult (vet estimates 3 years old), 19-pound female jack russell, or possibly a jack russell/beagle mix. I met her on January 23rd at a crossroads gas station in a rural part of Marion County, South Carolina. She was presumably abandoned at the gas station — I don’t know what’s wrong with people who would dump a dog out on the highway in January (or any other time), but she’d been living outside the store for at least a week, through this awful cold weather. I visited three times that day, and each time, the dog was trying desperately to make friends with everyone who stopped for gas, and when I petted her she followed me to my car and tried to get in. The third time I visited it was nightfall and incredibly cold, and she was still there, so she came home to Durham with me.
She is a GREAT dog. She’s extremely affectionate and eager to please, and she seems to be very smart. For a jack russell she’s also really calm. Maybe it’s just that she’s in a new and confusing environment, but she has only barked once, and hasn’t had any of those jack russell running rampages yet. She and our dog (an 8-year-old golden retriever) like each other and have been playing nicely. She gets along okay with our cats too (she tries to play with them, an idea that they quickly squash). The gas station owner said that her children loved the dog, so it sounds like she’s good with kids.
Here’s the jackpot: she’s house-trained. She has not had any accidents in the house or car. (We will let potential adopters know if any of her behavior takes a turn for the worse, but so far so good!) She wags her tail constantly, and does endearingly silly things like falling over backwards when trying to kiss someone sitting behind her.
Now here’s the complicated bit. She had a checkup with our vet, and we learned that she has heartworms. I guess that’s not surprising for a dog who’s been living outside in a swampy part of South Carolina. It’s treatable, but will require careful attention. Our vet is going to give us an estimate of what full treatment is likely to cost, and we’ll let potential adopters know. She’s getting started on antibiotics today which will boost her immune system in preparation for heartworm treatment. When she starts the actual course of anti-worm medicine, she’s going to have to be kept calm for about eight weeks, with no exercise. One of our cats was successfully treated for heartworms more than a decade ago, and she’s now 17 and healthy; but it’s going to be an expense and a project that this dog’s future owner will need to consider.
She is probably not spayed yet; the vet didn’t feel a scar that would indicate having had surgery. We’re currently treating her for intestinal worms, which should be knocked out with the first dosage, though we’ll have her retreated to make sure. She had a full slate of vaccines this week, and will need a booster shot again in three weeks.
So far, that is what we know of this dog’s story. She is as sweet as can be, and is going to be a first-rate pet and companion.
We have of course had her scanned for a microchip (none), been in touch with the shelter in the county where I found her, and scoured online boards in case anyone had reported her missing.
We live in a very small house, with a large older dog, and two very old (17- and 18-year-old) cats. About once a year I come across a lost dog and bring him/her home, and if we kept them all we’d pretty quickly be beyond our means to take good care of them. So far I’ve always been able to place them in good permanent homes (with people I know personally and will continue to be in regular touch with). I’m of course trying all the same routes to place this dog as well, but because of her special medical needs am trying to spread the word a little farther.
We will gladly deliver her to a new home anywhere within about a day’s drive of North Carolina; and if for any reason it doesn’t work out, we will come back to get her, guaranteed. If you are interested in adopting her, please provide references, ideally including a veterinarian who has treated your pets. Please understand that I don’t make this request out of any distrust of you personally — simply that I want to ensure that this dog goes to a home where she will be safe and loved.
If you are interested in this little girl, or know someone who might be, send me an email (click on my name in the right-hand column) and I’ll put you in touch with SarahB. If you’re worried about the cost of heartworm treatment, of course we can set up a fund here to help out with that!
PeakVT
Quite a cutie! She should have a new home in no time.
chrome agnomen
fund time for heartworm treatment?
Princess Leia
Sounds like she will worm her way into someone’s heart! SO adorable. Maybe this is the dog for the new FPer.
And I second opening the fund for the medicine.
Johnny Coelacanth
Thirded. Maybe Cole needs a new dog.
Elizabelle
So tempted. That wise little face.
Closeted epistemic (formerly Lojasmo)
Yup. Put up a heartworm fund thread please. I’m in for twenty.
henqiguai
Hey! Wasn’t Elon looking at the possibility of a dog???
wmd
I sent a message to an old friend in Chapel Hill with link to this post… not sure if she’s got a dog now or not.
Mnemosyne
Didn’t one of the commenters say the other day that his/her mom was looking for a dog?
I fourth or fifth the request for a heartworm fund. No need to make Sarah B. and her family bear that whole cost while we’re around.
Liza
Man, I’m living in Durham so this is super tempting.
I was going to wait until I finish up the graduate degree to get a dog, though…
John Cole
I’m working with Evelyn at MARC on this one. That is right near her, and when I get in touch with her we will probably do a fund-raising thread for him.
I laughed when I got the email that said she thinks it is a JRT mix- the longer legs probably make it a Parson Russell, and not a JRT, but that is without a doubt undiluted Parson/JRT. No beagle in that. No animal other than a JRT can eyeball you like that.
Looks like a skinny Rosie.
RobNYNY1957
Is there a way of making a contribution?
La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes)
Puppeh needs a name! Johannes & I are in for the medical fund for her.
Flying Squirrel Girl
@henqiguai: The heartworms might be making her lethargic. She might have some running rampage in her when she’s feeling 100%.

Medical & transport fund for Elon? MAKE IT SO!!

I’m in!

Oh, she’s pretty. That’s a great face/head.
John, when you talked to Elon about putting up his podcasts here, did you warn him about the pet-owning habits of the readership?
Violet
Oh, so cute! That curled up on the couch photo is so sweet it makes my teeth ache. I’m sure she’ll find a home soon. Calling new FPer Elon!
Closeted epistemic (formerly Lojasmo)
Sorry, John, but there’s a hound in there too. Walker coon or something.

aww, I wish we could take a 4th dog… what a sweetie

Annie Laurie (raises glass) you are going to Heaven!
Will contribute what sheckels I can to the medical fund.

Posted to my triangle peeps, keep us posted on the $.

Oh, man, I wish I lived closer!! Our Pom is getting on in years, and has a disc injury that makes him feel older. I’d LOVE a new puppy to keep him company, he is generally disdained by our cats. Can’t make the drive from S.NV to NC, tho.
quannlace
You asked how somebody could just abandon a dog like this….I’ve known some of these idiots, and their attitude is “Hey, they’re animals…they can take care of themselves.” To them, our local park is some wonderful wildlife refuge where they can roam wild and free.
John O
I had a beagle/JR mix that was freaking fabulous. All the smarts and athleticism of the JR, with the general laziness of the beagle. Bailey. I miss him so.
Raven
@quannlace: That’s why we feel lucky someone dumped Lil Bit on our vets doorstep in the middle of the night.
Mister Papercut
Currently resisting the urge to use the photo of her side-eye face into a “Bitch, please” macro.
If I weren’t unemployed right now, I’d be sorely tempted (like, “brb, driving to NC right this damn second”-tempted) to add that face to my life, and my cat would just have to deal. I’m sure this cutie won’t be wanting for a family for long, though.
John O
@Closeted epistemic (formerly Lojasmo):
Agreed. I see a little hound in there, too.
Handsome dog, though!
SiubhanDuinne
I would love to contribute and hope there is an alternative to PayPal. Had a bad experience with them a few years ago and am very disinclined to go through all that again. Happy to send a cheque (yes! handwritten! on paper!!) by mail (envelope! stamp!) if someone provides an address.
Or should I just send it to MARC c/o Evelyn, and specify it’s for the SarahB rescue?
Seanly
Good luck finding a forever home for her.
11 years ago my wife & I rescued our sweet girl Ginnie from a gas station near Harrison, VA. We couldn’t take her with us on the way down to visit her folks. We spent the whole visit arguing if we should take in this beautiful stray. My wife is horrible with numbers so I had to remember the exit number on the way back. Going ahead and rescuing Ginnie is the one good thing I’ve done in a rather unremarkable life. She passed a couple of years ago, but we still have one of the pups she was pregnant with at the time. She would have died without vet care as the first puppy in the birth canal was turned.
WereBear
The poor little sweetheart! Thank you for stepping and and saving her from certain death.
Whoever had her did not deserve her.
jeffreyw
@schrodinger’s cat: Alas! The new pup escaped and is loose, though she is hanging around close, eating food we put out, sleeping in the garage on a doggie bed Mrs J has placed there. A botched capture attempt has made her even more skittish. A live trap has been deployed with limited success.
Raven
@jeffreyw: Come on you old boonie rat, field expediency!
EL
I’m in for the medical fund.
jeffreyw
@Raven: Raven! I will not shoot the poor dog! Shame on you!
hitchhiker
Lord, I love dogs.
I’m in for the fund; let’s make that happen.
Can I gush about my new rescue dog? Got him on December 6th. Maybe 65 pounds, maybe 2 yrs old, maybe some kind of Australian sheepdog/Great Pyrenees mix, most definitely sweet, calm, smart, funny. I waited for almost 4 years after our Golden died of old age, knowing it would be unfair to expect any other animal to replace him . . . but my new dog –who came to us with the name, Utah — is not a replacement. He’s himself, and I’m just so grateful. I also feel sorry for whoever lost him, or abandoned him. He’s perfectly well-behaved, which makes me think it was the former. Who would ever willingly give up a dog like this? Can’t even imagine it.
La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes)
@jeffreyw: With hard-to-trap cats we feed them (extra delicious treats) in the trap several times with both ends open (secure the spring end with zip ties) WITHOUT trying to activate the trap. YMMV- I have never trapped a dog.
Good luck- hope she’s home inside again soon.
Raven
@jeffreyw: I was thinkin of a punji pit without no punji’s!
Raven
@hitchhiker: No picture, no dog.
jeffreyw
@La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes): Hmm… not sure this trap will open at both ends. I fear it’s too late now, given that our two boys have demo’ed it for her. Buddy twice.

@Raven:

Raven
@hitchhiker: Love to see it.
SiubhanDuinne
O/T but is anyone watching POTUS and SoS Clinton on 60 Minutes??
La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes)
@jeffreyw: Aargh, that trap you have is Brand X- no good. Try Tomahawk Live Trap or you could make a simple drop trap yourself but it would have to as tall as the puppy. There are plenty of DIY youtube videos. Linky no work when I try to paste one here.

@jeffreyw:
It’s obviously not nearly cold enough in central Illinois yet. I think some of that nice freezing rain they’re getting up in the Chicago area will make her realize that living in the house will be better than sleeping in the garage.
(Or maybe only cats have that sense of self-preservation. I definitely notice an uptick of stories where cats wander in and make themselves at home when winter starts setting in.)
Raven
@Mnemosyne: Southern Illinois.

Miss Moxie is either 14 or 15 and we have been having chats about whether or not she wants to raise a younger dog. It is tempting.
@SiubhanDuinne: Yes.. They are drooling over each other. I still think he campaigns for Joe if he runs.
jeffreyw
@Mnemosyne: We had the freezing rain this morning, and it’s drizzled all day. She looks bedraggled but isn’t interested in coming in. We propped the front door open and put a bowl of beans in view. She was interested but would not enter. Even had a trail of sausages down the walk up to the entrance.

I have two cats that insist on staying outside, and several others that prefer to be outside until dinner time, then it was 20 degrees out on Friday night and suddenly they all decided that being inside a toasty house with lots of comfy places to sleep was much more acceptable. Annnnnd as we speak all six cats and three kittens are inside the house. Good times.

@Baud: Joe worked with Congress to raise taxes and is now campaigning for tighter gun control laws. I’m not sure Joe will run because of his age, but I think he has earned Obama’s support.
Baud
@JPL:
They’ve both “earned” Obama’s support (and ours) in different ways, but Obama’s the head of the country and the party. It will be difficult for him to take sides if there is a head-to-head match up.

I have a new marmalade cat and another tabby outside that do not belong to me. The tabby has made it through the cat door on several occasions but gets chased out by the other cats, the marmalade just comes up to the front door and has not made any attempt at getting in through the cat door yet. I am thinking that it is only a matter of time.

@Baud:
I cannot imagine how he will choose, and to be honest I don’t think he can. I think (just speculation) that there will be some negotiation between Biden and Clinton to decide who is going to run in order to allow POTUS to endorse either but not having to choose one or the other. Both are absolutely strong candidates, and I would support either, but they have to know that if they both run then it would be an impossible situation for POTUS. I just hope that they sit down together and come to some sort of agreement.

@Litlebritdifrnt: What is a vacuum cleaner for the pen*s. I’ll be of medicare age soon, so I have to prepare.
Litlebritdifrnt

Apparently it is a device that uses a vacuum to get you *ahem* prepared for sex without the use of pills. It actually looks like a tiny dyson. Is there no end to the idiocy of our health care system?
WaterGirl
@Raven: I think there should be a law that 2016 elections cannot even be discussed until summer of 2014.

@WaterGirl: Or at least an agreement!

My adult ‘shelter special’ tested positive for heartworms, Lyme, ehrlichia, and plain old worms. Someone had driven their ~3-year old sweetie to a rural area and abandoned her. Anyway, it took a few months, but we were able to get her healthy again without too much trouble. The heartworm treatment isn’t nearly as dangerous as it used to be. The hardest part is keeping the dog quiet, keeping its heartbeat steady, for several weeks. My dog is not very energetic, so it wasn’t too hard, but no telling what a terrier will be like!
I live in the Durham area; I can’t have another dog, but I’ll spread the word and if SarahB needs help caring for this cutie occasionally, let me know. And I’ll kick in to the fund.

@JPL: I have a neighborhood cat that likes to patrol around the perimeter of my place. I’ve seen him a few times when the weather is warmer, but only his trail of paw prints in the snow this time of year. He’s pretty feral and seems quite disinclined to partake of my offered hospitality, i.e. bolts at the very first sign I’m paying him any specific attention.
Gravenstone
@Litlebritdifrnt: I suspect if both run, Obama simply holds his endorsement until after the primaries. I’m sure he can make the pitch for either quite effectively once the time comes.

@Litlebritdifrnt: I love marmalades! They are mellow like that.
Hope you can help them.
Litlebritdifrnt
@WereBear: I too am an absolute fan of marmalades. For some reason I have never been able to keep one, they always end up outside and always, end up going missing. As this one has come to me perhaps this time will be different.
Litlebritdifrnt
Okay I am in moderation because of the vacuum cleaner for the pen*s link. Whatever.

@jeffreyw:
Hmm. Is one of the other kids being mean to her?
SarahB
Hi everyone, Sarah in NC here with the dog of the hour. Thank you all so very much — and especially @Anne Laurie — for your generosity to a little stray dog in need — for the very kind offers of funding help, and for helping her find a home. You all are great. I wish the dog could read so she’d know how many friends she has.

@Litlebritdifrnt: I have been shouting at the tv commercials for “low-T”. Such a hip little nickname! No kids or women can touch the med, but men need to rub it on themselves so they can run around with 15 year old brains, all highed up on testosterone overload.
Wonderful, just wonderful.
JoyfulA
@TaMara (BHF): The paw prints, while indistinct, were small. We had sunny enough weather that the snow melted today, so I can’t measure them to make sure.
There are foxes and coyotes here, I’m told, and I’ve seen lots of deer in the yard, so a mountain lion wouldn’t be much of a stretch. That svelte pure black cat I caught glimpses of last summer would make a better companion, I think.
schrodinger's cat
@jeffreyw: Was the kittehs mean to her? Poor thing, I hope she returns soon.
Skinny Rosie, is a cutie, I hope she finds a forever home soon.

I really felt a chill when I read about how this dog was trying to make friends with people coming to the gas station. It really makes me sad to see an animal abandoned like that.
Anyways, I’m glad you picked her up and kept away from the elements. My wife was kind of interested in her, but we are way on the other side of the country, we couldn’t be farther apart.
Anyways, I’m in chipping in money for her medication and vet visit.

Ah, she’s a beauty, sure enough. And right up the road. But I have all the dog I can manage right now, thanks, even though I have the suspicion that she and Our Fargo would get along like a house on fire. Hope you find a good home for her.

Doggie is a beauty for sure, and has more than a touch of hound to my eye. The story made me tear up, as we just in November said goodbye to our Django, who’d been dumped at a gas station in Corinth Ky and was trying to make friends with everyone who came by.
He kept following me around as I had to make trips in and out as I brought the wrong amount of $ into the store for the coke I was buying(the drink, ya buncha lowlifes), as one coke turned into 2. the clerk said she would have taken him home, but had 4 already and would be unpopular with her husband if she did. My final trip to the car he followed me (again), pleading with his eyes. So I opened the door and said “get in of you’re coming.” It was a long drive home with my female rescue growling from the backseat whenever he looked her way. They became best of friends, and he grieved as heard as we did when she passed.
I’ll do whatever I can to help the lovely doggie get well and get a wonderful home. I wish I could, but we’re a long way away and the current princess has been snotty about getting a new pal.
Thursday
Liked: walking in the woods with the dog.
Disliked: dog running off and not showing up again for a couple hours.
Hated: dog coming back smelling like whatever it was she ate.
Currently loathing beyond all reason: the smell of what she ate is worse when it’s coming from inside her.
I may sleep outside tonight – just until the house airs out.

An alternative to paypal is Dwolla. You all and Cole would still have to go through the rigamarole of verifying your bank account(s) but each transfer costs 25 cents. So a transfer from one person to the Jack Rusell fanclub here at BJ would cost 25 cents. Then the transfer from your Dwolla account to your bank account would be 25 cents. If you donate less than $10 there’s no charge.
For one of my sideshow Bob gigs, I used this for a friend of mine who wanted her tenants to start paying her electronically, and Paypal kept changing the rules so that sometimes she got hit with $30 fees even when the month prior there were no fees (and the tenants followed the same instructions to the letter).
I don’t work for Dwolla, and get nothing in return for mentioning them here, but I’ve not had a single problem with them in the year that landlord switched over.
I would love to take a tiny dog to give my 125 pound Malamute a pal but I am allergic to everything but Mals and poodles.

i’m looking forward to putting this little girl’s sassy photo in the 2014 balloon juice pets calendar.

JCR
Anne Laurie and SarahB,
I’m very interested–I’ve been contemplating getting a JRT mix for awhile, and she sounds perfect. I have a large, calm, 3yo male Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who loves little dogs (very gentle and polite with them), and a drama queen cat who isn’t a fan of dogs but who’s just gonna have to get over herself and cope. My dog had to go through treatment for heartworms last year (he was a rescue from the south as well), so I know the drill (but am wincing at the cost–hope the BJ fund comes through!). I live in central Mass, though, so if you find a good home for her closer to you, I’ll understand if you give them first priority.
Anne Laurie, I tried the link for your email, but since I don’t use Outlook, things got complicated. Can one of you perhaps just post your email?
MazeDancer
@JCR:
Anne Laurie posted her e-address in this cat bleg: https://balloon-juice.com/2013/01/17/cat-rescue-bleg-north-carolina/ Scroll down and you will see it cryptically written above the white kitty pic.
Do not let distance deter you. Remember there is that great transport org that brings dogs up the East Coast. (MARC uses it, they brought that sweet St. Bernard from TN to somewhere in the NE to a BJ person. Will go search the name)
Also, halfway between MA and NC is not so far. Bet something could be arranged in the driving department.

BTW, this cutie looks more like a feist than a JRT, and they’re more common where she was found.
MazeDancer
@JCR:
Certainly looks very Feist. And the behavior seems to match. Which would be good news for the quiet of your home if it all works out. All the cute of a JRT, none of the frenetic. Though if JRT mixed in there, would be hard to tell by looks alone. But this puppy is one of the cutest. Very appealing.
(Did you get Anne Laurie’s e-address from post 97? Hope so.)

@JCR:Thanks for the pointer on the feist background. Interesting.
I have an email address for Anne from previous communications. Let me know if you still need that info. Hope it all works out.

Happy news for this little dog! Two readers of the blog came to our house last night to meet her, and they’ve decided that they would like to try adopting her. The dog loved them, they loved her, and my husband and I feel very sure that they’re going to give her a wonderful home. What a happy ending to the story.
I have been so moved by all of your generosity and concern for this dog. I’m sure that the new owners will be in touch with Anne Laurie if they would like to ask for the readers’ help with the heartworm treatments. Please accept my sincere thanks to all of you–for your interest in adopting, your offers of financial help, for spreading the word, and for sending good thoughts her way. She’s a lucky girl, and she has a happy life ahead of her!

@SarahB:
What wonderful news! So happy to hear. Look forward to the photo update. (Consider video coverage as well…)
And no doubt JCR and Betsy, who were considering adoption, will also be finding the right puppy for their families, too. There are zillions of dogs out there needing a forever home. MARC has a bunch. So do every shelter. And PetFinder.com is chock full.
The Newtown, CT, Animal Center has a very impressive web site. And lots of sweet puppies they save from high kill shelters. (And kitties. And they do TNR for cats as well.) And they received such an outpouring of donations that they are expanding and naming it in honor of the little girl who was tragically murdered who loved animals: http://www.theanimalcenter.org/
