I haven’t been posting much because Star Wars: The Old Republic MMORPG has been more fun. I play on server “The Shadowlands” if anybody is interested.
Military Judge COL Denise Lind announced this morning that she’s going to rule on Bradley Manning’s recent motion to dismiss all charges in his upcoming Court Martial, which is scheduled for May.It is highly unlikely that all charges will be dismissed. Military Justice practitioners with whom I have spoken would consider a partial dismissal to be a huge win for the defense. Far more likely is that any sentence would see a credit, should he be convicted of any crimes, not just for time served on a day for day basis, but possibly as many as ten days for every one day that she were to find were in violation of the law or DoD policy (which is essentially the same thing for the purposes of this discussion.)
We’ve started construction on the new house. 2100 square feet, 4bd, 3ba, 3car. Hopefully it will be done in May.
Open Thread, also too.
UPDATE: The following is added with respect to the hearing that is currently ongoing in Manning’s case:
” Today’s hearing focused on motions in limine and evidence of PFC Manning’s motivation in sending classified material to the Wikileaks website. The court also heard from the government on motions to preclude evidence that information PFC Manning provided to Wikileaks was over-classified.”
Roger Moore
Pretty cold comfort considering that some of the charges could result in life in prison. How do you deduct time from a life sentence?

root’d and ROM’d my new Nexus 7 with Cyanogenmod 10, I haven’t really been all that interested in the more boutique kernels since I am getting almost two days on stand-by (that’s with the screen and WiFi off)and at least 10 hours of screen-on, face-melting use.
Maybe I should try to be productive with this thing. Anyone want to talk about your apps or how you deal with a lack of SD slots?
Soonergrunt
@Roger Moore: The Life charge is not Life Without Parole, AFAIK. There would still be a projected release date.
Also, Judge Lind will be the trial judge, and there won’t be a panel of members (jury) as Manning has elected “judge alone.” If any charges do get thrown out, this is the one most likely to go. It will also be the most difficult to prove at trial.

Funny how all those uninformed old conventional wisdom heads kept insisting that Obama could fight Congresss through all of 2013 if necessary, because the fiscal cliff didn’t mean anything other than letting the Bush tax cuts expire.

I generally prefer my Nexus 10 to the Nexus 7- damn is the high res screen nice- but the no-SD thing is pretty much the same. I’m not a huge space user, though, so I haven’t gotten to the point that I’m terribly worried. As for apps, a large fraction of my time is spent in the ones that come from Google: Chrome, Email, Maps, and Books. It’s obviously worth getting some standard 3rd party apps, like Kindle, Adobe Reader, IMDB, and Netflix. I like MapDroyd, which lets you download Open Street Map data to your tablet so you have maps offline. I’m a birder, so I love the Sibley Birds app, which has all the information in the field guide, can be filtered by location, and has actual recordings of bird sounds rather than just descriptions. I’ve also become a fan of Package Buddy, which lets me track packages sent by a whole host of shippers.

In my case, I’ve over-clocked the phone’s CPU, making it run about 6% faster, and I’ve changed some settings not normally available to make network access a bit faster. It can be, but usually isn’t, dangerous. The iDevice equivalent is called “jail-breaking.”

I’m thinking of ditching my land line and going with just a cell phone. I just spend too much time away from home and would like anyone who wants to offer me a job to be able to contact me.
I don’t need anything tremendously special. I’m not going to use it as my primary internet device. I have this laptop for that and I’m not getting rid of it. No way am I going to try to compose a novel on a smartphone.
So I don’t need anything fancy. I really just need a phone, preferably one that has good sound quality; if it has a way to filter out background noise so that someone at the other end can hear me, that’s even better. And if can plug itself in when I get home and then put itself back in my bag when it’s charged so that I don’t need to remember these steps, I’m ready to purchase it right now.

Here’s one that’s been puzzling me:
So my work email address got scraped off the company website by [email protected], which is basically a wingnut talking points PR agency specializing in promoting whatever the latest WorldNutDaily-related grift is. It’s actually become a fairly handy wingnut barometer, but these days, it’s been out in the weeds. Immediately post-election, its emails became largely apolitical, promoting some book about White House pets throughought history. But over the past few weeks, it’s gotten a new fixation: the looming threat of EMPs.
And honestly, I don’t know what the hell to make of it. Of course, they’re politicizing it–“Obama administration silent on EMP threat,” “White House refusing to implement anti-EMP safeguards,” “EMP attack could cripple entire country, cost trillions”–but besides knowing what an EMP is, I’m lost. Is this some new wingnut conspiracy theory du jour? Has anybody else been seeing talk about it?
Arm The Homeless
@Mnemosyne: I understand. Denver was notorious for spotty service. I while I spend way too much for Verizon they work just about anywhere my car will go. The SO has sprint and it works perfectly for where she goes at a reasonable price.
Soonergrunt
@Ted & Hellen: Three things:
1) Nobody here can do a single fucking thing about Bush and Cheney. Go to the UN or the White House.
2) The post specifically mentions something that’s about to happen. As in it hasn’t happened yet. There’s not a whole hell of a lot to talk about. Do make an occasional attempt at 6th grade level reading comprehension, just for shits and grins, will you?
3) You’re goddess-damned idiot. That is all.

And the teat is paying for your new house. Wouldn’t want to rock that teat-boat, now would you?
Soonergrunt
@Bubblegum Tate: EMP is recycled every couple of years. It’s bullshit. The main purpose seems to be to gin up funding for Ballistic Missile Defense and other Reagan pet projects.
The White House doesn’t do anything about EMP because the threat is widely overblown, the possible remediations are tremendously expensive for dubious value even if the threat were real and immediate, and it’s scary to wingers because it’s an external agency attacking the country, and can be used by the right wing to paint scary people all over the world.

@The Moar You Know: I used these instructions for my initial flash.
This video is pretty good for following and rewinding.
Most importantly, spend a day or two looking over the developer sites to make sure you choose the right version. I have had no problems with nightly builds, but you may be more comfortable with the “stable” build released about every month, rather than every day. Also, make sure you get the proper GAPPS file, I got the wrong one and it made the install much more difficult until I realized it.
J. Michael Neal
@Brachiator: Yeah. The problem with the phone I have now is that it’s hard for me to understand what someone is saying and some of them have told me that it’s hard to understand me. Some of that is background noise, but it would seem to me that this is something that mobile phone makers would take into consideration.
My phone is old, so I would hope that they have gotten better. But, as you say, that never seems to be the feature that they are pushing so I wonder if it got pushed to the side in favor of adding nifty apps. I just want a fucking phone, but I want a good one.

@Ted & Hellen: Care to outline how PFC Manning is getting crucified?
I feel for the boy because 1) I think we hide way too much and most the stuff he dumped were things that are better out on the info-sphere. 2) No competent military organization should have allowed Manning to have the job he had. They put an unstable kid in the wrong place. They. Fucked. Up.
That said, all practitioners of civil (or in this case military) disobedience should expect to be punished to the fullest extent.
Heck, I can think of at least one who actually was crucified.

My husband just did something similar. We just moved out West from NYC where we had lived in our (ratty) starter home for 20 years. I spent 18 months and looked at 45 homes and *finally* found our dream house. After all of this (not to mention I had to live in an RV for 7 months all alone until he could join me), we couldn’t get a decent price for our place and our seller in AZ was a nutcase who kept fighting over price. The day before our 24th Anniversary I was sitting with my realtor out here, facing the reality that we just couldn’t get the funds together and I was going to be stuck in the trailer and have to start the house hunt all over again. I was very unhappy, but my realtor was all smiles – I was about to ask her if she had been drinking when she handed me an envelope. It was an Anniversary card from my guy to tell me the house was ours. I still have no clue where he found the extra funds — but he used the exact same words that you did about deserving a nice house.
