Hobby Lobby is risking paying upwards of one million dollars in fines per day just so they can thumb their nose at the birth control benefit provision in the ACA which requires employers to offer contraception access without copay to their employees.
On Saturday, thousands of yarn lovers rallied at Hobby Lobby storesand demanded that righteous dudes be allowed to withhold statutorily-required healthcare benefits from Vagina-Americans.
It was like the Chick-fil-A protests, but with less homophobia and more righteous indignation.

SPOILER ALERT
Off topic or on topic, since we’re talking about movies: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2013/01/how-accurate-is-quentin-tarantinos-portrayal-of-slavery-in-django-unchained.html
I totally disagree. Maybe Americans need to read more slave narratives. I expected a wildly inaccurate film in historical terms yet it is not. The biggest lie in the film is the notion that Django can blow up the “Big House” without consequences. Cora and Sheba are running for their lives for a reason. They will have to come up with a damn good story to save themselves. As the reviewer notes, the master class lived in utter paranoia about slave revolts, and when slaves did revolt they were put down brutally. Even if the majority of the slaves are ‘exonerated’, they will likely be sold off to pay off the debts of the estate, causing families to be broken up. In the end, the destruction of the Big House is a boon for those clever and able enough to get away and a calamity for those who fail. Django is a bit of an antihero, selfishly enacting a revenge which will intensify the suffering of others.
There is a great deal that happens in the movie (except for the ending) which has parallels in contemporary slave narratives. I think that American audiences accept this movie because they perceive it as an unrealistic fantasy. That permits Tarantino to get away with what he does. Within the language of movies, the action is unbelievable. But in fact, despite exaggerations, there is a ton of stuff in the movie that is historically accurate. It’s an ugly history that most Americans refuse to confront.
Btw, I like this commentary on “mandingo fighting”: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2012/12/24/django_unchained_mandingo_fighting_were_any_slaves_really_forced_to_fight.html

JSF addressed this somewhat but I think he states the rationale behind the contradiction a bit wrong. The goal is to punish women for having sex in a manner these people don’t approve of. I think that the movie is about justice, not revenge. And it deals a bit in fantasy, so I think that trying to talk about the “realistic” consequences of his actions is kinda beside the point.
However, I agree with you that Tarantino is surprisingly sensitive to issues of actual history. On the other hand, I was dismayed by some hipster reviews that wanted to see more outrageous action, more brutality directed towards the slaves, and we’re unhappy that they didn’t also have a cool white hero and more snappy quips that they could use to practice their snark.
Then there was the IMDB review that, while very good overall, thought that slaves were treated with kindness historically. Make me wonder what is taught for history in most schools these days.

@Judas Escargot, Bringer of Loaves and Fish Sandwiches:
Haven’t read the rest of the comments yet so maybe this is redundant, but has anyone asked these freedom-lovin’ Americans if it would also be OK for a Jewish employer to require that all employees, Jewish or not, eschew (and never chew) pork?

@bemused:
They didn’t have a painting of Jesus throwing the moneylenders out of the Temple? Hoocodanode?
bemused
@Roger Moore:
Praise the Prosperity Jesus! I sure don’t feel sorry for any customers of that bank if they lost money. Anyone professing to be a Christian who could see that painting and still put money in it an easy mark.

Once you realize there are people who oppose vaccinating girls for cervical cancer because they might have sex, you have to accept they’ll oppose anything that allows women to have sex without “punishment.”
We don’t get HBO, so I haven’t seen Game of Thrones, but the books are awesome.

@onlymike:
onlymike, what area of town are you in? I know of apartments that are available for about $400 a month and you can also have cats (not sure if it’s a bit extra or not).
I’m in Central Phoenix, there are a few places on my newspaper route (I am a carrier for the AZ Republic) and the rent is really inexpensive. Let me know if you are interested.
You can contact me at bgansel9-AT-gmail-dot-com. (that’s an L before the 9, not a 1).

I don’t know anyone who can take them, but I just found out about a small rescue org in Fountain Hills that may have some room if the larger ones don’t:

I’m willing to go the extra mile to do what I can to help you out of your predicament. I need you to contact me first though. I left my email address above. If you can contact me, I may be able to help you get into another place (short term loan, I can’t cover it all, but I can help substantially.) Contact me, please?

I didn’t read every response but this issue really infuriates me.
The employer never pays for Birth Control – the birth Control is paid for by the employee with their labor.
Let’s assume for a moment the Hobby Lobby could opt out. The employee would pay for birth control using the wages they earned at Hobby Lobby – right?
What’s the difference?

@schrodinger’s cat: They are the craft supply version of Jo-Ann’s Fabrics. They have supplies for a wide range of crafts — from yarn to beads to paints and glues and paper, etc. Similar stores are Michael’s and A.C. Moore, the former Creativity chain. I like an independent store in my larger vicinity — Lady Jane’s Crafts.

I’d never heard of Hobby Lobby until I came to Phoenix. I’ve been in one of their stores exactly once. I would never compare it to Michaels. Michaels is huge and has many thousands of items. Hobby Lobby is much smaller and caters to a different clientele. One of my co-workers at the newspaper is also a floral arrangement designer for Michaels. She does lovely work. There is no way I could get that type of thing in Hobby Lobby. I doubt that they do much arranging. I sometimes do wreathing and I go to Michaels when I want to get supplies. I would never consdier Hobby Lobby for that sort of thing. On the one occasion I went to Hobby Lobby, I was looking for supplies to make a large doll house. My grandmother had one and I was considering making one of my own. I was very disappointed in Hobby Lobby’s offerings (on many different levels, very small store, offered very little.)

@gVOR08: I was told by a friend (when I was younger & needed the stuff) that if God wanted me to have a baby taking the “pill” wouldn’t do any good. I asked her what was the problem with taking it then but she never seemed to come up with an answer. She did, however, get herself some birth control a few years later.

Betcha I can withhold my $$$ a lot longer than the loons will spend theirs.

@Rome Again: We don’t have a Hobby Lobby in my area; I was going with the stores I have experience to going to. ETA: The closest one seems to be in South Plainfield, NJ, about 30 miles away.

@eemom: From the article you linked to: “a Black person cannot get any film green-lighted in Hollywood that attempts to tell the story of slavery in the Americas as it actually happened. Just ask famed actor Danny Glover who has been working for years to get a film made on the Haitian Revolution. In 2008 Glover, appearing at a press conference in Paris, stated that Hollywood financiers dismissed the film stating that it lacked white heroes.”
Powerful. I personally would love to see a movie about the Haitian revolution. Didn’t know the details until I took a course on Caribbean history in University. The story about the only successful slave rebellion in history should be widely known regardless of what Haiti has become today.

@Corner Stone: FearDotCom, where you could literally be killed by web content. That was dated when it came out and totally irrelevant in content by the time it hit DVD.
Corner Stone
@Robert:
Not so far fetched, actually. Have you ever visited ABLC?

The money that might go to conservative felters flocking to Hobby Lobby probably comes out of the pockets of Michaels (owned by our beloved Bain Capital). Are AC Moore or Joann’s any better?
Robert
@Corner Stone: I believe she’s only capable of felling trolls through her website.

@JustRuss:
That logic only applies if the objection to abortion involves caring about babies – which it doesn’t for 95% of wingnuts. They’d settle for “you can get an abortion but you have to have SLUTTY SLUT tattooed on your forehead”, with forcing pregnancy to term as an option that’s slightly less obviously misogynistic.
Also, too, applying logic to Christianists is at best a dicey proposition anyways.
