Cooking, cooking, cooking for the shindig Monday night.
It’s not an agenda – it’s both an obligation and a pleasure.
One fellow always brings his home-built harquebus and a supply of black powder to provide a few loud flash bangs to compete with the fireworks the neighbors set off.

Very nice, Hayley. I wish you and your friends a good year, and many more.

Happy New Year to our friends and commenters who are celebrating already.

The only time in the last five years we stayed up til midnight was when the Hokies played UT in the Peach Bowl. I suspect we’ll crash out early tonight too. My big problem is what to do for the great brunch that friends have tomorrow. I have a small turkey and have been thinking about bearing down and making turkey tamales. The biggest issue is that they start at noon and the Dawgs play at 1!

Just over three hours to go here in Japan. The wife and the mother-in-law are watching “kohaku,” the iconic NHK television singing program that is shown every New Years Eve. I’ll make ice cream sodas in a bit for the big finale. Then it’s a brief walk to the “jinja,” a Shinto shrine,” to drop a nickle into the box for luck. A five yen coin is “goen” and that sounds like good luck. Nippy outside, only about 35F tonight.
Elizabelle
@Raven:
Email me some of those turkey tamales.
Haven’t focused on New Year’s Eve yet. Up early to finish wrapping Christmas presents for my sister’s family.
Really enjoying the holiday lights this year. Will be sad when neighbors take them down.

We’ve been arranging our costumes for the fancy-dress house party we’re attending. This year’s theme is the color silver and the letter S.
And I have been baking my ass off– stilton and parsley cheese puffs, two kinds of danish for tomorrow morning, plus brownies and cookies for the 12 children that will be at this party. I’m also in charge of the nibbles, so I have a heap of vegetables to slice and meatballs to fry off.

Well Obama and the Dems prove again there are few people on the face of the Earth that are more incompitent at negotiating if this story in the WaPo this morning is true.
Bravo on Obama, Harry Reid and Joe Biden being the parties that drown the government in a bathtub for lack of revenue while Norquist and the Republicans look on:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/senate-negotiators-search-for-deal-to-avoid-the-fiscal-cliff/2012/12/30/7d546aee-521c-11e2-950a-7863a013264b_story.html

@Napoleon:
I know it’s just a typo, but “incompetent” is one of those you want to be careful with when proofreading. Kind of like “grammar.”
And please submit your 5 paragraph essay on how you get something passed so that 2 million people don’t lose their unemployment and the tax accounts of thousands of employers don’t spin around like tops trying to figure out how to calculate the withholding taxes next week.
It’s easy to bag on Harry Reid and Obama from the comfort of your easy chair. Dealing with the nut jobs in Congress, who, despite what you like to claim, hold power, is another story all together.

Today has become an unexpected day off. My kids’ daycare was closed. So, 4 day weekend.

@magurakurin:
Good point!
As to the first, you simply do not crush the balance sheet of the US Gov on a short term extension of unemployment like that. They are complete morons to make that deal, just like I would be a complete moron to shove a hot poker in my eye. This deal, if properly reported, is just that stupid. It is not even close to making any sense from the standpoint of the Dems.
As to your second item, easy, just have the IRS issue new withholding charts today based on the new higher rates and have them kick in a month from now. Tough shit if employers don’t like it, they can take it up with the Republicans.

Happy birthday Hayley!

And PS, the Republicans are never going to take Obama seriously (and it is obvious they do not) until he absolutely holds a line he has drawn in the sand. He is incapable of growing a pair of balls and doing so and there is not a single person on the otherside of the isle that does not realize that.

He ought to do nothing and watch the Republicans scream as their friends in the defense industry are gored and scream when they are forced to take a position on tax cuts only below $250k. I bet they change their tune and the final result is nothing nearly as bad as what the paper is reporting. And if they don’t do you really think the Dems will end up with a worse deal?
But Obama is a guy who is enough of a moron to take the arguement that the debt ceiling is unconstitutional off the table months before he even gets to the negotiations over it (I can only hope it is because he has a trillion dollar coin in his pocket).

Hmm, you mean an agreement has already been reached and both houses have already voted in it and it has passed? I didn’t see that in the article. All I saw was everything that was already reported by every media operation in America throughout the day yesterday. And that they still haven’t agreed and that there is much doubt that McConnell and Boehner could get the votes even if they did get an agreement. What’s new here? Why should I get my hate on for Obama, Reid, or Biden? And why are you under the impression that the word “negotiation” is the same thing as “my way or the highway”?

Another three inches of snow today to go on top of the foot we received over the past week. The daughter unit got to go sledding with a couple of her cronies on Saturday, which of course was a highlight of her holiday break…this evening it’s either shrimp scampi or barbecued shrimp, salad, homemad bread and apple pie for dinner with a bottle of Chandon Blanc de Noirs at midnight or thereabouts.

No big plans for tonight. Will go to Total Wine in a bit to pick up a few bottles, including a couple for bro’ man at Sighthound Hall, still besieged by loud, happy Brazilians. Maybe a field trip to Micro Center to pick up some odds and ends, including a wi-fi router.
In trying to rise above “still camping out” mode in this apartment, I decided I needed a “fun” project in the mix, i.e., getting my “media center” whipped into shape: TV, DVD, stereo, streaming video, etc. And for that I need a new router.

Caught up with a buddy of mine last night, was a dose of heavy real-life discussion. Warranted the drinks, but slightly regretting it now. Not to worry, I am planning on being lit like a firecracker this evening. Leaving work early and getting my cook on in 5 hours or so.
P.S. Ignored politics this weekend, but it sounds like Obama keeps negotiating against himself. He’s got to hold the fucking line and make the GOP put their shit stamp on whatever repressive, regressive measures they want. Make them own that shit, Mr. President.
His apparent lack of learning that the GOP simply don’t give a shit and are willing to be economic terrorists is distressing.

Here we go again.
Do we need to go through the list of Obama’s accomplishments in spite of Congressional opposition? Again?
I am beginning to think that many Democrats have internalized the Republican way of thinking about Obama. Weak… ineffective…. and when he gets everything he wants, including the presidency for a second time, they walk around telling us how he triumphed in spite of himself and how it was other people who did it, not him.
Maybe Marshall is more right than he knew. Not only is Washington wired for Republicans, so are a lot of Democrats.
And I’m making shrimp fried rice tonight. Tired of pork. Right now, I’m finishing my coffee and getting ready for my traditional New Year’s eve declutter morning.

Oh, yeah, and the Droid cell phone would probably like a taste of the wi-fi too.
Because of no wi-fi, I haven’t played with the Nexus 7 much. I took it with me when I was dogsitting last week and used it mainly as a Web browser and Nook reader. I recently got the Google Nexus 7. The new 32GB version was on sale, and it was my Christmas present to myself.
I like the 7" size. I was surprised over the last year at how much I used my Nook Simple Touch (about the same size as the Nexus 7), and whenever I thought about getting a 10" tablet and what I would use it for I always found myself thinking, “Eh, I can just use my laptop for that.” The 7" size is good for reading in bed.
And the Nexus 7’s screen is very crisp. I was a little surprised at how good it looks.
If there is a Micro Center near you, I recommend a field trip, because they typically have all the tablets available in demo mode, and you can fondle them and see which you like. They might do that at Best Buy, but I haven’t been in one in a while.
ETA: Have to say that I pretty much ruled out an iPad or iPad Mini because of the cost. If you’ve got the dough, by all means check those out.
magurakurin
@PurpleGirl:
I’m not a real techy person and I even surprised myself by buying the Nexus 7. But I did look at other devices and I choose the Nexus because it seems to be “freer.” As in, more free stuff. I know there are moral questions, but an Android device not overloaded by Amazon(read Kindle)lets you download lots of songs for free. Also, the Nexus 7 is just a bit smaller than the Ipad Mini and the Kindle Fire, so it seems to fit nicer in the hand. It also just fits in my front pants pocket. Not that it would be super comfortable, but it does fit and you can walk away with it. The Ipad Mini does not fit at all. The Nexus has a GPS, but the Mini does not. The Kindle has a HDMI port but the Nexus does not, so if you want to plug the tablet into a tv, the Kindle would be better.
I haven’t loaded videos into the device, but Youtube and other streaming stuff works well enough. Also, Google has said they are coming out with $99 version in the spring. Not sure what the specs will be.
I can’t say for sure if the Nexus is “better” than the others, but I can say I really, really enjoy the one I have.

I was once part of a lively discussion about when you knew you were in the SWPL class, though this was before the website so we ended up calling it the American Dream class. We decided there were three markers: everyone in your neighborhood had finished college; you took it for granted that you could see a dentist whenever you wanted to; you took it for granted that you would have at least one mortgage.
Nowadays, of course, you can finish college and still not be able to get anywhere a dentist, so our definition is outdated.
