Remember that beautiful St. Bernard we all pitched in to help out with her horrible case of Heartworm? Evelyn sends an update:
Hi John,
Asked for update on Garnet with her heart worm treatment, adoption process, and also final tally on donations from Balloon Juice. Also some more pictures of her.April reports that a total of $3,017 was donated by BJ followers..Absolutely wonderful…April sends her sincere thanks and gratitude to you and all the folks who donated and care for the animals.
Please read below from Sue Scruggs, foster mom.
Evelyn, Garnet is doing fine having had her first HW shot on Nov. 26, 2012. Garny, as we fondly call her is enjoying the company of her foster sibs, two Saints, one Lab/Griff mix, one Golden/Terrier mix, and a new foster Saint Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix female. Garny is laid back most of the time but every now and then shows her spunky side wanting to play tug and bounce around like a puppy trying to get the others to play. Of course we are keeping her fairly quiet since her HW shot and she seems fine w/ being low key, as Saints so often like to just lie around! Her favorite thing is to cuddle up w/ her foster dad on the couch in the evening to watch TV!
We received glowing references both personal and from the vet for the potential adopter. We are in the process of getting someone to do the home visit which should happen this week. I emailed today to the Xxxxxxx’s re the adoption process status and also suggested a possible transport option if they are planning on taking her before her next HW shots on Dec. 26, 2012. We will let you know when plans are made.
I am attaching some recent pictures of Garnet.
I’ve also heard that one of the potential permanent homes for Garnet is a Balloon Juice commenter, but we’ll keep that on the down-low until it happens.

I would suspect that HW treatment these days is much safer for the dog than it used to be. Thirty years ago, I had a Border Collie with HW, and the treatment was basically several injections of the poison strychnine to kill the worms. That was about a fifty fifty chance of killing the dog as well. Jason survived that only to get hit by a car a couple of months later, RIP.
Garnet is a handsome regal looking fellow. Glad he found a good home.
Redshift
Puppy!
Ms. Redshift an I were at a Norwegian Christmas bazaar on Friday, and there was a woman there who had two lundehunds (Norwegian puffin-hounds.) She was trying to tell us all about their unusual anatomical features developed for climbing the cliffs of the fjords (six toes, extra toe joints, flexible shoulder joints), but we didn’t really care, we just wanted to play with the doggies. They were both very friendly and liked being petted.

Puppeh. Really, really BEEEG puppeh.
Can’t wait to hear she has a home–what a beauty!

I’m so glad things are progressing swimmingly for the sweet girl.

She is looking so much better and is filling out weight-wise, I think. Hope she loves her forever home.

I too am a dog lover and want to tell all who care about a wonderful vet that I took my dog, Silky to in San Luis Rio Colorado, I think, in Mexico, just 20 miles south of Yuma.
She is a 13 yr old English Setter who is the love of my life.
I don’t know who I love more, Silky or my two beautiful daughters!
I left Florida last year and wanted to find a vet that I could afford as Silk had some tumors on her mammary glands. One was about the size of a small grapefruit and I know that if I didn’t do something that I would lose her.
Well I sniffed around on the internet and I found a page where an American was recommending a vet in Mexico.
Long story short….He saved her life! It brings tears to my eyes when I think of how thankful I am to him and his staff!
He speaks perfect English, his clinic is spotless and his staff was professional and polite although they didn’t all speak English they all loved their patients!
He even sent an Ambulance to the border and picked us up and delivered us back to the boarder when he was finished!
He removed 3 or 4 tumors from her and spayed her at the same time for $ 260.00.
We had some tough times in the camper there in the desert getting her to stop bleeding. I remember her looking at me with fear in her eyes in the night and whining, not understanding what was happening to her. I cried like a father who could lose his daughter as she had pockets of black blood that wouldn’t stop seeping. I called him and he told me to try and get the blood to drain out and I worked the wound areas and finally got her to bleed bright red. After a few more days, I was afraid the bleeding wouldn’t stop and that maybe she might bleed to death.
I loaded us up and headed back to his clinic.
By the time we reached the border, her bleeding had almost stopped, but I decided to take her in anyway and he examined her and told me she was recovering nicely and we were out of the woods, almost!
We went back to the BLM land we were camping on and I went to the casino for the all you can eat prime rib and I asked the dining room manager if I could take some scraps for her and he told me to take all I wanted for her!
I cried for again as she wolfed down the pound of fat and prime rib I fed to her out of happiness!
She’s still like a puppy here lying on the floor next to me and is as good as ever!

If you need affordable help for your pet, I can’t thank or recommend him highly enough!
If you do contact him please mention Silky my English Setter to him as my way of thanking him for his lifesaving help. I’m so tied to this stupid dog, who I love so much that it might kill me when she does pass, I don’t really care if it does. I know you will all understand.
I’d post a picture, but I don’t know how.
Just thought I’d pass this on to other pet lovers!

Cuddling on the couch always helps.

@Garcam:
There are good people everywhere. That’s a lovely story, and I wish you and Silky many joyous years together.
As for Garnet, well, Saint Bernards have spent thousands of years rescuing humans, it’s only fair that humans should rescue a St. B.

i cannot tell you how much it warms my cold, cynical heart, that a plea for $500 turned into a $3,000 fundraiser. I just love it. And it makes me feel just a little bit better about things. Good on ya. I am so happy Garnet looks like a million bucks, and that a lot of other animals benefitted.
Violet
Awww…so sweet! So glad Balloon Juicers could help! Garnet looks so much better. So glad she’s got a potential forever home.
Kristine
Yea for Garnet. She looks so much better. Happy pup.
It sounds as though HW treatment has progressed since the mid 90s, when my pup Prince needed to be treated. He was in the vet hospital for a week or so, and received daily injections of an arsenic compound through a catheter in his leg. iirc, there was a 20% chance that the treatment would kill him. He came through it–he was 10 at the time–and lived another 4 years.
Yes, he was on HW preventive. But this was before they formulated it into a tasty chewable. At the time, it was a large white tablet that was apparently pretty nasty-tasting. We did try to hide it in food, but figured out later that Prince was holding it in his mouth until we left, then burying it.
PurpleGirl
@Kristine: Friends had to give their full-sized Dobermann HW prevention pills. When I was watching the house and the pets I had to give the dog the pill. My friend showed me how to hold Hugo’s mouth open with one hand, put the pill down his throat with the other hand and then quickly hold his mouth closed and rub his throat to make sure the pill went down and stayed down. The first time I did it, I was a little apprehensive but it worked out fine. Hugo never did bite my hand off…

Awww shit. Puppeh luv. So happy for Garnet.

My significant other is not a fan of big dogs, and would prefer to own a dog that happily sits in a handbag. I would be quite happy with a St B. or a Newf, or, if I had the time, a border collie, which is not a big dog, but a dog with large horizons. And so, we do not have a dog.
I hope Garnet finds a very good home.

She looks so much better now, and it’s great that she is being a belle of the ball. Big dogs have a tougher time finding a home.
Back when we had the room, and a slot opened up, we would appear at North Shore Animal League and ask for their biggest puppy. Last time, we got a Newfie/Chow mix (purple tongue) who was so delightful.
Schlemizel
@amk:
Agreed – this is just stupid.
Also, in what way is Bibi’s newest affront to a peaceful solution a “slap in the face to President Obama”? It may be a kick in the balls and a crap on the head of Palestine. It may be a middle finger to the rest of the world. But it is just a continuation of business as normal for Bibi & his bunch of thugs bent on the ultimate destruction of Israel. The sort of shit he has been pulling for the last 20 years.

Very good to hear that Garnet’s life has improved. Happy that she’s headed for a forever home soon, and on the mend.
Way to go, BJ community, on responding to Garnet’s needs! 3 cheers.

@R-Jud: That was a great story!
Garnet is a beauty and hopefully we will soon have info on her forever home.

My family had a St Bernard, Beauford , for years and it was perhaps the best dog I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a LOT of dogs).
As a 5 year old I had a pony (yes, that’s right, a pony!) but I preferred Beauford for riding. I was a tiny kid and I think he enjoyed it as much as I did.
They are incredible dogs especially for families with children. I actually pity the child abductor who settles on a kid with a 160lb St Bernard.
I’ve had Labs for my last two dogs, both adopted and my current one is almost the size of Beauford believe it or not (I think he’s a lab/pony mix).
I can remember Beauford lying on the living room floor on his side with myself, my brother and sister using him as a pillow while watching TV.

We need an open thread. Or a new post.

No new posts yet? Are the front-pagers taking the day off?

@Gin & Tonic: Anne Laurie often has an early morning post.
@the Conster: They’re not allowed to go Galt.

Maybe the zombie apocolypse began wihout us knowing.
At this point, I’d be relieved to see some antique gay porn from Sarah, even, just to know someone’s alive.

@YellowJournalism: Hell I’d take a guest post from kitchen implement just to break up the boredom.

Awwwww, goggie looks so much better! She’s a beauty. Man, I’d love to have a dog like her, but I can hardly handle my almost-100 pound golden when he decides he’s going to go a different way than me when on the leash. Thankfully, we rarely have him on the leash because we have so much land and he is so loyal that he won’t ever go too far from us or near the road (he’s frightened of the front yard because we live on a busy road). But on walks or, especially, at the vet’s, it’s all I can do to hold on when he gets excited and wants to pick up the pace or visit the other dogs in the waiting room.

Thought this mayan thing was happening 12 21. Alan Simpson should have all his senate pension and retirement benefits burned in a fire. Thank Bill Clinton for yet another Dem backstabber in Erskine Bowels

Nicholas Kristof has a good post up on international charities that deliver a lot of good for the buck. Suitable for holiday gifting (in honor of …)
Gifts that Save Lives
I did not know that $52 donated to the International Rescue Committee will pay for an Afghan girl’s schooling for a year. That’s one dollar a week. Why stop with just one young lady’s future?
ETA: here’s link to IRC. Through December 31, gifts will be matched, dollar for dollar. That’s huge.

That said, delighted to hear of every penny spent on pets in need, like Miss Garnet.
(Although by 11:00 am some of us will be beyond tired of seeing her sweet face up as lead post.)

Lovely to see Garnet looking so much better; even lovelier to hear she has a forever home lined up.
Where have all the front pagers gone?
They’ve all come here to Seattle to get gay married and/or light up a legal spliff.
It’s a great day here in Washington State, as both laws go into effect.

They make them as chewables now. Sooooo much easier than having to do that ‘stick-it-down-throat thing that works 50% of the time. It’s amazing how long they can hold it in the back of their throat, and just when you think its fine and you take your hand away- “Ptooey!”
