We have simply had paradise grade weather here in the high desert for this time of year, and they say it won’t change much in December. 65 to 70, zero wind and humidity, and pristine air. High-tax states have been subsidizing low-tax states for ages. Eliminating that deduction would make it even worse.
How about we implement 20 year chargeback of 5% of income against every advanced degree to the state where that degree was earned? The IRS can collect it and send it back to the taxpayers that subsidized that education. CA and MA would have their state budgets repaired in an instant. Might even be able to lower our taxes as a result.

I need some help from the medical professionals around here. I was in court this morning waiting for our motions to be heard and there was a motion ahead of us (motion to compel) which involved a med mal case whereby a mental health person (possibly psychiatrist) prescribed some sort of medication “off label” for a woman who had basically tried everything else which had not worked for her mental health issues. She then suffered the most horrific side effects which resulted in her basically suffering what amounted to first degree burns all over her body (although she was never near any fire), and she died, two months later, after all her skin basically melted away.
From what I heard during the motion hearing the drug was something like “Lipitril” (I have already googled that and it is not the case but I know it began with an L) and the condition which resulted was not specified by counsel for plaintiff, except the woman basically burned to death over the course of two months.
I did another google and found that the condition was perhaps “Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis” but it did not look as bad as the photos that plaintiff’s counsel said “our expert witnesses said were the worst they have ever seen”.
Can anyone help me out here? I just want to know more because it sounded utterly horrific and I cannot imagine that a person would think that a side effect as horrifying as that would be worth it.

All I know is there are rare side effects for all sorts of medications, that are very rare and nasty. Off label is done all the time for certain meds. If we didn’t approve medicines with a risk of possible but rare devastating adverse reactions, then few medicines would be approved. You always roll the dice starting any new med that alters physiology, especially.

@Litlebritdifrnt:
Could it have been Luminal? That’s a trade name for phenobarbital, which is known to cause TEN. Or possibly Lamictal? Also used off brand for depression treatment.
Violet
@Litlebritdifrnt: Is the medication Lamictal? It’s prescribed for bipolar patients, but is sometimes used for people suffering from depression that won’t respond to other treatment. I’m not sure if that’s truly off-label, but it might be.
You don’t know what kind of reactions people will have to medications. I took a medication for a short while that should have been fine. Turns out one of the inactive compounding ingredients was from a substance I’m allergic to. Over the three weeks I took it I got more and more miserable to the point where I wanted to claw my skin from the inside. Switched to another version of the medication that didn’t have that compound in it and I was fine the first day.
I had to dig and dig to find out what was wrong with that medication. The doctor was stumped. I informed the doctor what was going on so he could know for his other patients. It’s not listed as a side effect and most people wouldn’t know about it.
redshirt
@Litlebritdifrnt: Wow. I want to know this now too.
I’ve been fascinated by cases of “spontaneous consumption” since my Grandmother burned up in a bath tub, cause not really known. Further adding to this charming tale was the first firefighter on the scene to discover her was her son, my Uncle. Good times.
The theory goes she was a heavy, heavy drinker, so had a lot of alcohol in her body, maybe spilled on her as well. She goes to take a bath to wash it off, but has a cigarette first. She falls asleep in the bathtub than blam. Fire and she burns. Half crispified from what I’ve gathered, though no one has ever gone into detail about it and I would not ask my Uncle about it.
So, regarding your case, I can’t imagine a drug alone could do that to a body, but rather some combination of alcohol and cigarettes. It seems to explain most “spontaneous combustion” incidents.

@Violet: Sometimes a change of scenery is helpful in changing your feelings about a holiday. After my husband died (years ago), I couldn’t face Thanksgiving at our dining room table. The boys and I spent Thanksgiving away from home for several years in different settings until I could do a home cooked meal again. It helped to do that. After three years, we were able to come back to the old dining table and enjoy it. Try to think outside the box in finding ways to make your days more enjoyable. I hope it gets better.
Mnemosyne
@Violet:
Hmm. It’s a little hard to give advice without specifics, but I understand you may not want to put specifics on the public intertubes. It’s a little easier to ignore the tribulations of others if they don’t live in the same household, especially if they’ll let you get away with just making sympathetic noises and not demand that you pick sides and/or FIX SOMETHING. If they do live in the same household, maybe you need headphones and to claim that you have a lot of work you had to bring home from the office. And then watch Christmas movies on your computer.
If you can, see if you can do something holidayish where you’ll be away from the stress-producers for the day — a play, a movie, a museum, whatever. Something like volunteering at the YMCA or Boys & Girls Club holiday party might cheer you up since you get to see all the little tots getting excited about Christmas.
Violet
@redshirt: I’ve tried. It doesn’t seem to get through. For some reason they are addicted to the stress that comes with having to find gifts for everyone, including adults. It’s ridiculous. I’m tired of it and just want to enjoy Christmas, but somehow the stress seems to take precedence and the things I enjoy doing like decorating the tree or making cookies are met with indifference, resignation or complaints. Ugh.

@Litlebritdifrnt: Many, many drugs have side effects that are horrendous. You’d be surprised how many have suddenly falling over dead with no warning as a side effect.
Generally, the rarer a side effect, the worse it can be. Also, presumably there’s a reason why you’re being prescribed a drug, and the worse that cause is, the more acceptable severe side effects are.
Add to that, you what you heard was an argument in court, not a scientific study. That doesn’t mean that horrible things didn’t happen, but we don;t know what happened.

Doesn’t start with L, but sounds like Valproic acid, that is off label for bi polar disorder. And known for some nasty side effects. The TEN is an extreme variation of Stevens-Johnson Syndromw, that can be triggered by all sort of meds, especially antibiotics.

So I just had an interesting experience. The old cat 18+ that never makes a meow made the most pitiful noise & stumbled/dragged herself into the room, wobbled badly, curled up & collapsed on the floor. She laid there trembling in a heap. I laid down next to her and petted her and coo’ed. The episode went on for a good two minutes then she was calm, just purring.
We laid there together while the missus blubbered for maybe another 5 minute & then the cat got up & walked away as if nothing happened.
Not sure if it was a stroke (I doubt it since there seems to be no after affect) or a seizure of some kind.

Any chance you can harden your heart, announce that this year it’s gift cards all round? And then you can say that tree-decorating, or cookie-baking, will take place on Day X at Time Y — anybody, especially kids, welcome to show up, but if it’s not convenient at least you know you have a couple hours of peaceful enjoyment on her schedule.
Of course if you have a ton of little kids in the extended family you risk getting stuck supervising alone while the parents go stress out at the mall, but even that’s probably less annoying for you. (Having a selection of holiday DVDs from the local library on hand can’t hurt, either.)
Mnemosyne
@Litlebritdifrnt:
Antibiotics can potentially have that exact same side effect. According to Wikipedia, so can NSAIDs, which you can buy over the counter. Technically, you’re risking having the exact same thing happen to you every time you take an aspirin or ibuprofen. It’s just that it’s, you know, very rare. I think the article said it was something like 300 people a year.
I’m not sure her family is suing the right doctor, but there was definitely a medical fuckup somewhere along the line in that they didn’t realize she was experiencing this very serious (albeit rare) side effect and needed to be taken off the drug immediately.

I love giving gifts and, fortunately, I’m pretty good at it. I do usually try to keep it within bounds so as not to embarrass the other person, though. These days, I lean more towards handmade or “hey, here’s this cool thing I found for you in a thrift shop.”
I have something for one of my co-workers that I need to give him that I found in a thrift shop — it’s a spoon rest with an alligator that says “New Orleans” on it. He’s going to love it because he loves kitsch, he loves alligators, and he’s from NOLA. Win-win-win, and it only cost me $5 plus tax.

Lamictal is actually well-regarded for having very few side effects in most patients. Among known side effects in some people, however, is skin rashes. And not everyone’s the same — hell, peanuts seem to be as lethal as sarin to some folks. George likes his Kung Pao lethal.
Frankensteinbeck
@danimal:
I’m taking Lamictal, and actually psychiatrists like it because it has so very, very few side effects and interactions. It has two known side effects. Both are very rare, around 1% of sufferers, both are terrifying – cognitive dysfunction or Stephen-Johnsons – and both are easily spotted before they do any real damage and stop as soon as you stop taking Lamictal. If you get a nasty rash on the palms or your hands or soles of your feet, stop taking it. That’ll happen during the first month or never. Otherwise, you’re good.
It’s a very gentle drug, but it brings up an important fact of medicine: Every medication is a tradeoff, and not a predictable tradeoff. The human body is full of surprises, and everyone’s is different. ‘Very tiny chance of something horrible happening to you’ is the chance we take when we, oh, eat monosodium glutamate or fish for the first time.

@Frankensteinbeck: Hell, my lovely family gifted me with a complete intolance to morphine to the point where I’m afraid to use anyopioid drugs. The worst part? According to every doctor I’ve ever talked to my ‘side effect’ is so rare they’ve never heard of it. Basically since at least my grandmother (who probably died from it), through my father, and in me resides a wonderful bit of genetic code that says, “Morphine? Great, shut the lungs off ASAP”. We’re talking near total resperatory failure within 15 minutes of a standard dose. Not. Fun.

Sorry I’m really late back to the thread. Got called away.
@Josie: Thanks for the input. The change of scenery is a good idea. I just don’t know how to make it happen.
@Mnemosyne:
The volunteering is a good suggestion. Maybe I’ll try that. Helping those less fortunate always reminds you how lucky you are.
@redshirt: Well, I live in a hot climate, so going to heat during our cool time of year is never appealing. But even so, I can’t afford a vacation, nor can I leave at Christmas. But great idea!

@Anne Laurie: I can only do it for some. Won’t work for others without buy-in from certain family members. So…left with stressing about gifts, cards, etc. I’ve removed myself as much as possible, but I still have to deal with the stressed out person who has chosen that stress.

Obama clearly is unwilling to seriously commit to fixing this economy and the debt and deficit which are killing us and driving us toward total cataclysm unless he cancels any law anywhere restricting where Americans can carry firearms, and he must ban any individual from suing a corporation for injury or negligence, and unless the President is willing to certify that a nice smile by a chief executive will count as sufficient pollution control on any industrial emissions by air or water or ground, then he’s just not serious on finding a solution.
